As a parishioner of the Basilica, I want to offer you and others another view of your misperception of the wait for admission that you had after you arrived late for Mass recently. The reason the ushers hold closed the floor to ceiling glass doors to delay admission for late comers is to preserve the respect being offered to the procession of the priest and others assisting in the celebration of the Mass. After some early prayers and singing, the doors are opened for tardy attendees to enter. We are often late and are among the other very few people waiting. It's not intended to be a road block as you imply. It also serves as a subtle reminder to get to Mass on time. It sounds like you didn't wait around for the doors to open because you likely missed the full personal experience of Fr. Jim's celebration of the Mass, one of his consistently outstanding homilies, and the glorious singing of the choir. Jay, I encourage you to come back to another Mass, arrive on time, get a good seat to your liking, and benefit from the full experience of a wonderful Catholic celebration at the Basilica.
