This place is unapologetically authentic. Everything is at least a little spicy so be careful bringing kids. They have a few nonspicy items but make sure to ask them first. Chunks of pork fat can be found floating in 75% of the dishes and the menu is mostly in Chinese. If you look at every table you can see a giant mortar and pestle. It is the eggplant with thousand year egg which looks very funky but is really delicious. We also love the Taiwanese cauliflower which is perfectly cooked. Hunan food has. Lot of smoked meats and a lot of play with sour elements so it's a little different than your usual Chinese food. Lunch here was an amazing experience! The flavors were authentic and delicious. So many great Hunan dishes! My favorites were the eggplant with green pepper and century egg (this one is especially bursting with complementary flavors and so unique), farmer's pork (a beloved classic), and pickled long bean fried ground pork (spicy and sour and appetizing). Service wasn't the best but nothing to complain about either, I don't know what those other reviews are taking about, it seemed just standard Chinese restaurant service to me! We have a party of 4 and I don't know why would we need to share any space with other groups. Not gonna lie but at first I had some hesitation about this restaurant due to their lower rating on yelp, even though he had suggested trying them out so many times. But we ended up liking this restaurant so much that we came back here the next day for dinner and eventually dine here on a weekly basis. On our first visit, we got here around 6pm on a Friday night and they were about 70% full already. In 15 minutes of our arrival, there was a steady flow of group of people coming and seated until the restaurant was completely full. The line at the door kept forming even until we left the restaurant about an hour later. On our second visit they were busy but not as busy as on our first visit, we were seated at the back where they stationed dirty dishes etc. The vibe back there did make our dining a little less enjoyable. It's kinda loud back there (but to be fair I do have a reduced tolerance to loud sounds) and I did feel a little anxious due to their fast-paced service. However, after being back to this place every week, I've found that their busiest traffic is consistent on Friday nights; any other times, there are usually plenty of tables available and they let us choose where we want to sit. I found the service to be really good, the servers are all very friendly and all smiles even though they were busy. We are always immediately greeted and seated; and the menu were always the first thing to come to the table, followed by a pitcher of water then we would be left to check out the menu. We appreciate the pitcher but not a fan of the small cups (typical dim-sum tea cup size) that we have to pour our water into. Several waitresses were circling the floor constantly. I can see why people would feel a little rushed but we've never felt rushed at all though. They are all working restlessly, really making sure no customers feel neglected. When we looked at their prices, we thought some of the items were kind of overpriced but after seeing their generous portions, the prices are more than reasonable. Studying their menu, we had a hard time deciding what to order each time cause everything sounds amazing. Also, their updated menu actually have pictures and descriptions now -- which is super helpful so I've snapped some pics of their menu. Foodwise, we've tried most of everything on their menu and we like all of them except the Griddle Cooked Chili Chicken with Pickled Chili cause it's all just bones, really. But the others have been great! Their foods are indeed spicy, the numbing kind but not overwhelming. My tummy is somewhat sensitive to overly spicy foods and theirs don't upset mine. The Crispy Chicken with Garlic sauce was pretty good, I enjoyed it a lot though the peppers did overpower the garlic flavor; I might be biased because I'm a huge garlic lover and always think garlic could be stronger on most dishes lol. Use chopsticks to pick up the chicken or else you'll end up with too much peppers with each spoonful. Mapo Tofu dish was also good, he enjoyed it thoroughly. I tried it too and they put spices to give it a little spin, which is also true with their Mao's Braised Pork - a dish we thought would be a sweet sauce kind, but they also use variety of spices in it. A must-order for us is their Stir Fried String Beans. Although the string beans do not have that "crunch" when you bite them like DTF's but the flavors are rich. We really love it! We always notice that every other table ordered their Mashed Eggplant & Green Pepper with Century Egg dish so we couldn't pass that one up either. I did really like the Mashed Eggplant & Green Pepper, it has the century eggs too which I love but might not be for everyone and the dish is on a salty side. Fish Blossom is their sweet & sour fried fish which was one of our comfort food when growing up back at home. And to my delight, it was a boneless fish! YAY! Unfortunately they put way too much sugar in it, it was just a tad too sweet. We also love the Farmer's Pepper Pork too but would advise against scooping up the sauce cause it's mainly just pork oil. He loves their beef dishes like Stir-Fried Beef with Wild Chili and Fragrant Beef Fillets, and the Fish Fillets in Chili Oil (enormous portion!). Our totals usually came around $40-50 (excluding tips) for 3 dishes, and for the amount of food we are getting - it's quite a steal. We always ended up with plenty leftovers to eat the next day! Parking lot is shared, sometimes it gets super packed and some cars don't give a flying crap about taking up 2 spots. Overall, this restaurant has been added to our favorite Chinese restaurants. But I'd say that if you have a more sensitive tummy, do use caution in eating the dishes as the ones you think won't be spicy still have chili pieces in them and the chilis are hot. This is our second time eating here. The first time was my birthday party and they graciously accommodated 15 people. Both times the food has been very good. I don't know how I should rate this. It's a low-key Yelp rule that authentic Chinese restaurants are usually 3 or 3.5 stars. According to my roommate who is from Northern China, Dong Ting Chun is one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants he's ever been to in the U.S. And it truly was authentic and delicious. The four of us had the Mashed Eggplant (best eggplant dish I've ever had and I don't even like eggplant), the Dong Ting Fish (steamed whole fish with chopped pickled chili and onions that was so tender), the Braised Pork Belly (classic and tasty), and the Sour and Spicy Potato Shreds (always mmm) along with rice. The overall meal was very satisfying, and we left stuffed with smiles on our faces. So you see my predicament. Do I give this place a high rating because it deserves the high rating, or do I give it a 3-star rating because I want the Yelpers who know about the low-key Yelp rule mentioned above to know this place is authentic? Decisions decisions... I think because at the time of this review, Dong Ting Chun has 3 stars on Yelp (nice! hehe), I'm going to give it a 4 to bring it up but hopefully keep it in that sweet spot for authentic Chinese restaurant ratings. Dong Ting Chun is a real gem for Hunanese food in the Seattle area. It's totally worth trekking to Edmonds for, and that's exactly what we did on a Sunday. We got there around noon and were seated right away, but by 1 PM the restaurant was packed with groups waiting for tables. The menu is extensive and potentially intimidating, but there are helpful pictures provided if you're new to this cuisine. We decided to get the cumin lamb, braised pork belly with preserved vegetables (served with steamed buns), and the stir-fried string beans. We also ordered some steamed rice to share. There are some specials available as well, but they're all written in Chinese on the board (although the staff are happy to translate if asked). Everything came out fresh and piping hot, but all the dishes were overly salted. If the salt were to be toned down a bit, this would've absolutely been a five-star meal--the prices are very reasonable for the massive portions, and apart from the salt, the flavors are on point. We had no issues with service unlike other posters, and we were not hurried out the moment we finished eating (although our group isn't one to linger when we see others waiting).
