The woman who appeared to be the bakery manager, working around 8:15 a.m., answered every question with an attitude that felt forced, dismissive, and unwelcoming. When someone says, "This is my first time here," it's usually an opportunity to create a memorable experience--not make them feel like they're interrupting your morning. My bun sloppy wet. They did try to grill the bun first but the moisture from the solid mass of meat-steamed greens was too much for it. Fell apart while trying to eat it. Well, I thought it couldn't get any worse, but I was WRONG, so. Wrong. My husband is not a baker. Great at many things. Not that. Fridays had wonderful pies and cookies. He was sweet enough to pick up a brownie and a chocolate pie, since it was my birthday after all. $16+ for a small chocolate pie. Okay. I went to the kitchen to cut a piece for each of us. Couldnt even open the lid since half the pie filling was still liquid and had slid out of the shell like a gelatinous mass of dark brown goo. Truly appetizing. I gave up on that and turned to the brownie. It looked promising. Small chocolate chips. Good size. I took a bite. Other than the sharp, dried edges of the brownie and the dry tasteless mouthful of crumbs I now had, nothing notable. Not worth the calories. We went back to the pie. We got to looking at it. It had a random, kitchey, "F" logo sticker on top of the clear plastic lid to denote new branding and theme to go with the new menu. I moved the pie to a different counter in the kitchen. I noticed a large white label on the underside, it was the nutrition facts. Weird. Homemade and freshly-made items don't typically need to have that type of sticker. I looked closer. "Manufactured by Quality Baking Products - Houston, TX". Are you kidding me? Nearly $20 for a mass-made pile of liquid poo? I tasted the filling, it tasted like Dairy Queen's hot fudge syrup. I also got the grit of fresh granulated sugar. You know the kind when you didn't bake something long enough for the sugar to actually reach melting temp? I looked closer yet again, I don't see any browning on the crust edges, and I don't see any browned filling on top of this "pie". It's nearly raw. I don't know if this Houston company screwed up, or if Friday's was supposed to bake it to temp, THEN sell it, either way, no one's eating raw pie. We just put it in the oven to try and salvage something of this absolute disaster of a birthday dinner. Pray for us. At this point I'm just hoping the burger I choked down won't give me food poisoning. Needless to say we won't be going back.

When we get there we park, walk in and head to pick up our food at the counter. It's usually labeled with the ticket stapled to the bag. We then get in line to pay for our food. The line is usually backed up but moves fairly quickly. There is also a small area with tables and chairs that you can sit at and enjoy your meal or sit there if you need a rest. For my meal I usually order a Hamburger which comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. I usually get mine with mustard. Their burgers are so good and a good size. Overall Hruska's is a great stopping place while traveling. Whether it's for gas, a bathroom break, or if you want to grab something to eat this is a one stop shop place.

They are steeped in history and have been around for decades passing along the family recipes. It's obviously improved structurally over the years from a country store and looks like a modern gas station now. It's always pretty busy every time I have stopped in, but they are a well oiled machine and keep the masses moving with excellent customer service. They have all your gas station essentials like snacks and beverages. What sets them apart is their bakery. Here, they label their kolaches as the traditional fruit filled variety. I like them, but they are never my first choice. I love the ones with meat inside. Here, they label these as pigs in a blanket. They have a large variety of both. I usually go for a regular sausage and cheese, but over here, they sell a delicious pan sausage kind. On top of all their sweet and savory baked goods, they also sell burgers on the grill. Their burgers have made it to the Texas Monthly Top 50 burger spots. I have yet to try it. Overall, this is an always stop place for me. I highly recommend stopping here to stretch your legs and enjoy a delicious pastry while you're at it. I will definitely be back.
