Our group was looking for a late night place to eat in Shiner and decided on Friday's. We love to support local and were excited to give it a shot. Unfortunately, everything about the experience was off. 2 out of 4 of the meals we ordered came out incorrect with missing items, and they completely forgot about one of our group member's meals and didn't check on us until the rest of the group was finished eating. When we finally were able to tell our server we were missing a meal, it was another 15 minutes until the meal came out. When the missing order came out, it was obviously fresh, but it was flavorless. The French fries were undercooked and the "spicy" chicken tenders had no spice or flavor. I don't think I have ever had a bad chicken tender until I visited this restaurant. Worst of all, there was no apology for the mix-up. I'd recommend visitors try a different restaurant in the area. read more

No words. Loved this place. Will likely not eat here again. Staff very friendly. It's not their fault. My husband stopped in to pick up a late dinner to go for my birthday. Goes inside. Text messages me. Brand new menu. I usually get a bacon cheeseburger. No bacon. But I can get a burger. Okay. No tator tots. But I can get mashed potatoes. No salad bar. But I can get seasoned fries. And no. Onion. Rings. No onion rings. NO onion rings. They were freshly made and crunchy and amazing. And one of the few places left you could still get homemade onion rings. It's too late to go anywhere else, so he orders us both a burger. It comes with a sauce. Menu states a, "brioche" bun. Well folks. The wilted slimy tomatoes I got on top of a very greasy (and not the good kind of greasy) burger, with no pickles (they only have spears for fried pickle spears now), two random sized sloppy onion slices (not a ring of an onion, let's call it like, a fajita strip), covered by an entire piece of steam-cooked, nearly unidentifiable, leafy green, maybe a leaf of ripe romaine? My bun sloppy wet. They did try to grill the bun first but the moisture from the solid mass of meat-steamed greens was too much for it. Fell apart while trying to eat it. Well, I thought it couldn't get any worse, but I was WRONG, so. Wrong. My husband is not a baker. Great at many things. Not that. Fridays had wonderful pies and cookies. He was sweet enough to pick up a brownie and a chocolate pie, since it was my birthday after all. $16+ for a small chocolate pie. Okay. I went to the kitchen to cut a piece for each of us. Couldnt even open the lid since half the pie filling was still liquid and had slid out of the shell like a gelatinous mass of dark brown goo. Truly appetizing. I gave up on that and turned to the brownie. It looked promising. Small chocolate chips. Good size. I took a bite. Other than the sharp, dried edges of the brownie and the dry tasteless mouthful of crumbs I now had, nothing notable. Not worth the calories. We went back to the pie. We got to looking at it. It had a random, kitchey, "F" logo sticker on top of the clear plastic lid to denote new branding and theme to go with the new menu. I moved the pie to a different counter in the kitchen. I noticed a large white label on the underside, it was the nutrition facts. Weird. Homemade and freshly-made items don't typically need to have that type of sticker. I looked closer. "Manufactured by Quality Baking Products - Houston, TX". Are you kidding me? Nearly $20 for a mass-made pile of liquid poo? I tasted the filling, it tasted like Dairy Queen's hot fudge syrup. I also got the grit of fresh granulated sugar. You know the kind when you didn't bake something long enough for the sugar to actually reach melting temp? I looked closer yet again, I don't see any browning on the crust edges, and I don't see any browned filling on top of this "pie". It's nearly raw. I don't know if this Houston company screwed up, or if Friday's was supposed to bake it to temp, THEN sell it, either way, no one's eating raw pie. We just put it in the oven to try and salvage something of this absolute disaster of a birthday dinner. Pray for us. At this point I'm just hoping the burger I choked down won't give me food poisoning. Needless to say we won't be going back. read more

Great food at a great price! We ordered fried chicken and sides for dinner after leaving the Shiner Brewery. My gizzard dinner was very tasty. Awesome breading and seasoning on the gizzards. The lady who took my order brought extra white gravy for dipping. We had mashed potatoes, green beans and mac & cheese for sides, but the chicken was the best. The pies and cookies in the glass counters looked delicious, but we didn't try them. read more

Well...Not like it was. Went for gizzards and livers but they don't have livers anymore. And gizzards in brown gravy kinda sucked. Not sure why they would not make cream gravy now. Gizzards, fish and fries were cooked great though. And service was fantastic. read more

Our Monday Evening at Friday's: A review from an out-of-towner (Settle in and grab you glasses if you need them) Immediately upon walking into this fine establishment we felt right at home. The atmosphere and vintage/kitsch artistic imagery (common throughout Shiner), coupled with the wonderful food smells, were pleasantly overwhelming. We were welcomed by Nedra (AKA Nini), who kindly guided us out-of-towners through their menu. We ordered the Cock and Bull sandwich with fries, an order of boneless spicy chicken nuggets (I forget what they called them), and a separate order of onion rings to stay, as well as an order of gizzards for the road. Nini offered to hold off on the gizzards so we could take fresh ones with us. After a bit of social banter, we sat down and took in the surroundings. I love the color of the tables and felt like we were in the Nighthawks painting. Nini was so accommodating and playful, offering different types of sauces for our various foods (my favorite of which was the spicy ranch, but they also had brown and white gravy). Upon receiving our food, we opened the Cock and Bull (featuring both beef and fried chicken patties) to add some fries and onion rings (see pictures) . Nini then offered to have the kitchen cut this in half for us to make it more manageable. "Everything was delicious!" is an understatement. "Delectable" even falls short. The onions rings were perfect, large but crispy so as not to be overwhelmingly onion-y. I could go on and on about the food. We were so impressed by the establishment (kitschy and immaculate), and the food, and the service, that I asked to meet the manager (Ms. Lisa, who asked me to just call her Lisa). Lisa indulged my questions and compliments, and took the time to talk to me about the history of the place and the current owners. I also asked to speak to the cook, Mike, who (unlike me) was a man of few words but graciously accepted the compliments and handshake that I had to offer. He did state that he loves to hear such expressions of appreciation. As we were nearing the end of our meal, Nini asked if we were ready for the gizzards to go into the fryer. She asked what kind of gravy we wanted (which I've never had gravy with gizzards before) but I couldn't decide, so she gave us both and some more spicy ranch since I was such a fan. Let me tell you, that box of gizzards was overflowing - so much so that I had to share them later on (see my next review re: Shiner on Sixth). While we waited for our gizzards, Nini talked to us some more and even said that she didn't want us to leave (so sweet)! I asked about their soda, called STUBBORN. Nini offered us a sample and I immediately regretted having gotten water. This soda actually inspired a series of photos that I'm titling STUBBORN, featuring my beautiful wife - the first of which you'll see here and were all taken that night into the following morning. The only other regret I have, other than getting water instead of soda was not meeting the back of the kitchen staff. I think it was just one guy, but he seemed very busy and I didn't want to intrude further. Just in case you didn't catch it, this team must've been destined to work together. Lisa, Mike, Nini (LMN), and they all have four letters with two consonants and two vowels. I thought that was at least a little serendipitous. My recommendation? Add this stop to your itinerary for your next Shiner trip. And make sure to wear loose pants. Last bit: This place is a home run's distance from Spoetzl brewery. Fantastic staff and manager. We love this place. Don't underestimate its food. The gals working here are so friendly and so fast. Never a disappointment or unhappy tastebud here. Chicken strips are processed parts( cmon you're a chicken joint, not McDonald's. ) You kinda get tired of hearing " we're out of that right now." Food is cold and desserts are old and stale. We stopped by this little place and picked up the family special of 10pc dark and 2 sides. The chicken was really good! The pieces were BIG, juicy, and flavorful. The mashed potatoes & cream gravy were what you'd expect and the fried okra was plentiful and crunchy with a good batter. It also came with 6 better than average rolls to complete the large meal. All-in-all, it beats the heck out of your average chain chicken place, plus it's one of the few places open in Shiner for dinner! read more

Stopped for lunch as it was easy to get to, and at the time I wanted fried chicken, although I ended up ordering a cheeseburger as the chicken was sitting under heat lamps. It still may have been good, but I knew the hamburgers had to be fried/grilled so would be hot. It's a little dumpy looking, but was clean, and the people were friendly. You go in and order at the counter from a huge menu board. Hubby got a hamburger and fries and a drink and I got a cheeseburger and fries and a drink. Although I really wanted cheese fries, but I knew I couldn't eat that plus a hamburger, or if I did, I'd be hurting! They bring your food to you, and while it took a little bit, both burgers and fries came out super hot and fresh! The burgers were huge as well! I could not finish mine, but partly because I wanted a cookie for dessert! Our meal without the cookie was $19 something. So not bad at all for a really filling meal. The desserts were what I was eyeballing when I walked in. They have pastries, donuts and cookies and pies and cakes and oh man it all looked so freaking delicious! I had to have the smiley face clown cookies because road trip! It was soo good! Sweet and delicious sugar cookie topped with an icing smiley face? How could you go wrong?! I would stop in here again if I were in town, as I really do want to try their fried chicken, plus I want another cookie! read more

I would take this place over fast food any day. Salad bar was nicely done. Kids chowed down. And chicken was good. I didn't give it over a 3 star because 4 or 5 would be a "slap your momma good" . But this place is still a safe bet. Desserts lacking sweetness . But I would stay with the pies. Service was friendly . Place was busy at 6:30 on a Monday. About $30 for all 5 of us . We stopped in here for lunch after touring the Spoetzl Brewery. On first impressions, it definitely looks "iffy", but it's not bad at all. Since the place has fried chicken in the name, I had to try some. I got the 2 piece meal with mashed potatoes and a small drink which I think came to a grand total of about $7. The chicken is pretty damn good. It doesn't have any real seasoning to speak of, but it is fried to perfection and seems to be fresh. The mashed potatoes and gravy looked suspect, but turned out to be epic. Yes, epic. I normally give my mashed potatoes a healthy sprinkling of pepper, but these with their gravy were as close to perfect as I can ever recall eating. If this place was anywhere else, I'd have given it 3 stars; but to me, it really captured the essence of the town. The interior looked like it had been decorated by someone's grand mother in 1982 and left untouched since. Your food is served to you on a cafeteria tray. There's an old man just sitting at one of the tables trying to make conversation with everyone that walks by. There was absolutely nothing pretentious about this place. It was a straight-forward small town eatery and that's exactly where the charm is. Anything more would have felt strange. I don't think there's many other choices in Shiner, but if you try this place, I think you'll enjoy your experience. read more

Not sure what I was expecting exactly. We had just finished some work in Shiner and wanted to stop by the Shiner Bock brewery (spoetzl brewery) before we headed back to Austin. Side note: unless you are in shiner or driving through shiner, the brewery tour is not really worth going out of your way for. It's fun but you got to keep your expectations low. We had some time to kill before our tour at 1:30 and we wanted to grab some lunch. Fridays is the place the lady we called at the Brewery recommended. We walked in and I could immediately feel my arteries beginning to clog. I am pretty sure I was inhaling cholesterol. Now this is a fried chicken place so I can't expect much but this place delivered on the fatty foods for sure. Not only did they have chicken but they also sold donuts, pastries, and cookies. They even had a slurped machine! Anyway, the chicken was actually pretty good. On a good day it's on par with the colonel's. Everything else though, the fries, mashed potatoes and biscuits left something to be desired for sure. Walked in and most of the tables were dirty with trash on them from people who couldn't/wouldn't bus their own table. Service was crazy terrible, no matter how long I stood there, people walked by (it was not busy) and finally it took a while before someone would help me. Clearly the lady who helped me was of a very low IQ, as she had a very difficult time with taking my order for mashed potatoes, gravy, and onion rings with ranch sauce. I waited about 10-15 minutes and finally my food was served. Everything tasted good, not great, but good. My wife got a turkey burger and did not care for it. Before I left I bought a cookie - it tasted like it had been in the display been a few days too long. While waiting, I saw the (scruffy) looking cook come back from a smoke break and not wash his hands... You certainly don't get the feeling like this is the cleanest establishment in the world. So we stopped in after being let down by downtown Shiner. Needing some fried chicken. Desperately. The drumsticks were great, but the shining star was the Pepper Puppies. Dear Lord-- essentially, hush puppies but with jalapeño cheddar inside. Sounds odd, but so so good. Sooooo good. Stop in, get the puppies and some chicken. It's simple and good. Came upon this place on our way to Shiner Brewery. Try the Crazy Tater, it is like a long chain of potato chips. Didn't see anyone touch the "salad bar". So I suggest you don't either. What you wouldn't expect is a lot of baked goods and homemade cookies. read more

Ok this place got 2 stars because the burger was amazing. And the REGULAR BONE IN chicken is great. THE CHICKEN STRIPS ARE THE FROZEN PREBREADED KIND!!!!!!!!!! So your telling me the golden chick down the road or Bill millers in San Antonio has real chicken and the bread their own strips but this small, one restaurant, mom-&-pop place can't do that?!?? We had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fried okra, cheeseburger, fries. There were 5 of us. Chicken was fresh, crisp, and juicy like a good fried chicken should be. All sides were good including the fries. Burger was cooked well with good melted cheese and buttery bread. They have a bakery with all kinds of sweet offerings including cookies, pies, cakes, donuts, cinnamon rolls, etc etc. Really good example of a small town cafe' atmosphere and good small home town cooking. $60 for 5 people with entrees and dessert. Only complaint, very small complaint, would be that they serve everything on school cafeteria trays so the helpings of sides are small, limited to the size of the sections on the tray. We've come to expect bigger portions for the money from these small town establishments. read more

I am being fair with this review...I promise. So this was one of two restaurants that were open on the Tuesday that we decided to visit. We ate at the other spot upon arrival, check out that review if you want to read where else no to eat. My hubby ordered a cheese burger, tator tots and a rootbeer. I ordered the chicken strips and they came w fries. I asked a lot of questions bc their menu had choke options. I saw a meal go out and asked what it was. I was told the chicken breast chicken fried. The woman told me the chix strips are exactly the same just served w fries not the 2 sides. Well, my food arrived and I'm no food color expert but what I was brought was NOT what I was told I was getting. Oh well. So, below average fried chix strips that seemed to be pre breaded. Boo. Disappointing waste of hecka calories and fried food intake. My hubby said his cheese burger was fair. Small meat patty and nothing good or bad about it. The other guests were sooo unfriendly- nothing worse than feeling like you are not welcome. I say turn away from my fam and mind your own average fried food. read more

The best cheeseburger I have had in years!! Toasted bun and super fresh ingredients. The meat patty had great flavor as well. The fries were fresh and crisp. The iced tea could not have been any better. I cannot WAIT to go back to try the chicken and bakery goods. Fried chicken is bland and has no seasoning or flavor at all. The catfish dinner is good, but not the regular fish dinner. You can get sides like mashed potatoes, cole slaw, potato salad, green beans now so you're no longer stuck with fries. They have soup and salad bar. They are a bakery as well, so lots of pies, cakes, and cookies on hand. read more
