Whether it has to do with education or healthcare (both of which were significantly better in Orange County). I enrolled my child at Shenker after talking to all the parents I would meet at the park in my neighborhood who would sing the school's praises. I am happy to say, Shenker lived up to my expectations. My child does not speak English as his primary language, and I was worried about how that would affect him. Also if I might add, I would get unsolicited comments from other educators concerning my refusal to speak English to my child at home. I am an educator ( I have a Masters in education and another Masters in school counseling) and I knew he would pick up English just as I did. Upon meeting with Dr. Sharon, he agreed with my approach concerning my son learning two languages, and put me at ease. My son has greatly improved academically and socially at Shenker. He is so happy to go to school, and everyone in the front office knows his name, as they do with ALL the students that attend their school. Dr. Sharon has truly been a joy to work with, and I see how much he cares for his staff and for his students at school. He knows every student's name and he works with every family to accommodate their needs. I honestly believe this school's success comes from the top down. The class was organized, communicative, and I felt so at ease knowing my baby was in their hands. Now he is in the Ducklings with Ms Alyssa and I can't say enough positive things about her and her teaching style. My son has learned so much going to this school even though he has only just turned two, he is counting past 10, reading letters, coming home with new learnings every day. We are excited to continue to watch him grow and develop at Shenker.

Everyone I've spoken and interacted with has been professional, friendly, patient, and more than willing to answer any questions and have encouraged me to reach out should there be any in the future. So far from what seen while walking through part of the school and some classrooms, it was clean, had engaging and educational decor, and definitely seems like a place I would consider enrolling my child from what I've experienced if I were to go the route of public school (due to her age I'm currently homeschooling).

Most days he comes home with marker, paint, and glue on his uniform -- a sure sign of a great day. The curriculum challenges and interests him and he's encouraged to use his imagination. The ratio of teachers to students is wonderful. When he needs help a teacher is available to guide him. But what really makes this school special is the people. From the moment you walk in you are met with smiling faces, a friendly greeting, the feeling you and your kid belongs. You can see that the teachers and the administrators are happy to be there and that feeling extends to the kids. To see my son skipping in and out of school is magical. The school becomes part of your child's and your community. There are lots of special days and activities to get the kids excited to be a part of something. Our family has been with Merryhill, now, for two years beginning with Mrs. Bailey in PreK (such an amazing teacher), Mrs. Zellis in TK (a wonderful teacher who created a family environment in her class while still building academic skills needed for kindergarten), and now with the lovely and strong academic classroom environment that Mrs. Toranzo and her colleague Mrs. Jordan have created this year. In addition the STEM teacher, Mrs. Anderson, and the Spanish teacher are excellent. Finally, Ms. Kimberlee is so welcoming and so supportive of all the parents each day. It's a great place and I highly recommend it.

This school seems very advanced and up to date with their teachings and their technology. Since attending this school, I've noticed my child is a bit more advanced on the academic side compared to her other peers that go to regular in person public schools. Nothing against public schools, this school just works out for us as a family. This school uses real life scenarios in their quarterly projects. For example, they need to research about their dream vacation and how much it cost in real time and create a budget, etc. Surprisingly, as parents, after realizing her dream vacation was definitely more doable budget wise, we were able to actually take her on that dream vacation in less than a year's time. It not only teaches the students, but every assignment and project teaches us as parents as well. We highly recommend this charter school.

All three of my children went to private school in the Bay Area and I would not have hesitated for one minute to have sent them here. My child's kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Margolis, was phenomenal. She was upbeat, professional, engaging, and it was obvious she genuinely cared about the students and loved teaching. Unfortunately, things have steadily gone downhill since then. First grade did not meet the expectations I had hoped for, but I never imagined the experience would decline this much. Mrs. Brown is honestly the worst teacher I have ever encountered. She has a very flat affect, lacks engagement with the students, and struggles to teach material in a way children can actually understand and retain. My child has consistently been an honor roll student, so this is not an issue of capability or effort. What has been equally disappointing is the lack of support from administration. The headmaster, Mrs. Johnson, is not approachable and appears completely uninterested in parent concerns or feedback. Attempts to communicate issues feel dismissed rather than addressed. It is incredibly disheartening to watch a school that once felt nurturing and academically strong become such a frustrating experience for both students and parents.

In the beginning I thought it was my daughter's problem -- she just didn't want to leave me. But after talking with the headmaster, I suddenly realized: it wasn't my daughter's issue -- it was their teaching philosophy. 1. They believed my daughter couldn't control her emotions, and they expected her to -- but she's only three, her brain isn't developed for that yet. Expecting a three-year-old to "control her emotions" is like expecting a one-year-old to control her bladder -- it's a physiological development issue. And the headmaster should know that. 2. My daughter didn't know any English when we first enrolled her. Within four months she could understand all the teacher's instructions and even speak short sentences. Yet the headmaster still said she wasn't speaking "long sentences." As an early-childhood educator, she failed to recognize this progress in a child entering a completely foreign environment. 3.Once she cried so badly that the headmaster came over to comfort her, but my daughter refused to talk to the headmaster and threw herself into the arms of her teacher. The headmaster concluded that my daughter lacked the normal ability to communicate. But my daughter had only met the headmaster twice -- she was basically a stranger to her -- so when she was sobbing, she rejected the stranger and ran to the teacher she knew. To me, that is a completely normal reaction -- yet in the headmaster's eyes, it meant my daughter "couldn't communicate properly." 4.The headmaster claimed my daughter would cry loudly, scream, and stomp her feet in class. But from a very young age she never behaved that way; even in the first two months at Challenger she only cried quietly out of fear -- never screamed or stomped. Only after being moved to a different class and failing to adapt to the new teacher's methods did she show those intense reactions. She was using her own way to cry out for help -- yet the headmaster and teachers didn't see it. At home she also became moody and unreasonable. Because of what the headmaster said, we decided to withdraw her. We enrolled her in a new school, and I was worried she might not adapt -- new environment, new teachers, new friends. But after only a few scattered days of crying, she quickly grew to love school! In talks with her new teacher, I, as a parent, deeply felt the teacher's love for children, her understanding and acceptance. She treated my daughter like a child -- a real child. That's why my daughter was able to feel safe and confident so fast. Now she's been at the new school for three months, and every day she's very happy -- her English communication is no problem at all. This has only strengthened my conviction: my daughter was never the problem -- it was Challenger's teaching philosophy.
