Update 2025: There is nothing like Dorothy's. True Southern creole cuisine. Everything I have ever had is always cooked to perfection. This is surely an experience for anyone traveling to Louisiana. You will never be the same. Dorothy's is my favorite place to eat. Update 2024: Thank God for places like Dorothy's...still the staple of the community. Happy they are still in business and still providing the best home cooked meals in Baton Rouge.

Dorothy's is only open for a few days a week and for only a few hours at a time. It's cash only, sort of the middle of nowhere, with a somewhat unconventional ordering system. And yet, it's constantly slammed with people (#1) who are trying to get a bite of their addicting soul food. That's just how good it is while being as local as Baton Rouge gets. They're only open for a few days a week (Currently Thurs-Sunday) and only in the afternoon until 3 or 4 unless food runs out early (#2). They only recently stopped opening on Wednesdays and are not exactly good about utilizing social media to keep people updated (#3). Calling ahead is recommended to ensure they have anything available, let alone are open that day. If one is lucky enough to put in an order, then pull up into their parking lot and eventually an older gentleman smoking a cigarette will approach the car and ask for an order. Pay the man in cash and it'll be brought out. Try to pay in exact amounts because correct change is rarely given. The food is the main attraction and with good reason: it's delicious. It's guaranteed to be a diabetic's worst nightmare given how sweet everything is and is only getting more expensive in recent months at $12-15 a platter. For context, it less than $10 less than two years ago but people will continue to fork it over in an effort to fork something else. (#4) Stewed anything, be it pork chops or baked chicken is a must. It's so popular that it's served every day. The meatloaf was formally only on Wednesdays so I'm not sure when it's served anymore, but it's legit. Fried fish / chicken can be a gamble but usually it's worth the plunge. The sides are also fire. The candied yams are some of the sweetest I've had and will raise the blood sugar of anyone and quick. The stewed cabbage is probably my favorite but the potato salad is close behind. The mac and cheese is more like spaghetti and cheese, and albeit while strange, it's creamy and enjoyable. (#5) I'm still sad their "poor boy special" of red beans and rice with a sausage has been relegated to a side dish only. It was their cheapest main dish for awhile and probably one of the best versions of a common dish that I've ever had. It was savory and incredibly satisfying with every bite. It is with sincere hope that they will consider opening up other days and for longer. They're already thriving, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the city wakes up to them. ______________ (#1) Which clearly includes me. Like a lot. (#2) Happens *way too often* (#3) Thank goodness for Yelp. (#4) Ahem, food. (#5) Still talking about food.

Super solid soul food spot in Baton Rouge. When I went they were only doing takeout orders. Not an issue, I was only staying about three minutes away. All the food was fresh and very flavorful. I do wish the cornbread was just a little more moist, but other than that everything was excellent. Their sweet potato pie was some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommended.

Oh the love I have for thee. Hole in the wall filled with great food and many options. The people are great and they have great hospitality. The portion sizes are big for the price of the plates. Pick your meat and pick your three sides and enjoy! They are cash only and their sweet tea is the real deal. There is an ATM near but I would just say come prepared with cash already. Right near LSU and Lauberge so you can't miss it.

Great soul food! I'll definitely eat here again. The cornbread is excellent and the greens are perfect! As others have said, the M&C is different, but delicious. The yams were too sweet for my taste, but my smothered pork chop hit the spot.

Just had to update this place to 5 Stars. The food is just that good. Helpful Hint: Make sure you check their hours before heading here. Even call if you can to make sure they are open. Hours can be confusing. Also, call ahead to order your take out if possible. The eat in / waiting area is small.

Great food, great vibe. Just feels like home. I had the turkey wings, rice and gravy, green b abs and cabbage. The rest of the crew had chicken and fish baskets. Everything we had was fantastic. The vegetables had a slightly sweet taste which I didn't mind. Turkey was so tender. Gravy was really flavorful and smooth. All that I wish they had was stuffing to sop up that gravy. It's definitely home food. Location was a bit off the beaten path and in a strip mall that also had a big hair/beauty supply store in it.

This is not a cornmeal coating but a batter. At first I was surprised that I wasn't able to get any tartar sauce with my meal. However once I taste the fish I could see why it wasn't necessary. The fish was nicey flaky but the outside was crispy and not overly salted. This is some of the best tasting catfish I've had in a while. (Visiting from out of town). Expected a wait, 20 minutes, no problem! Another 15 to place our order, and another 25 to receive our food. We were there over an hour before we got any food. Ooffff... it's fine. We're laid back and can roll with the punches-they're busy and staff was friendly-it'll all be worth it when the food rocks our socks. Sadly...no. Both grilled cheeses (entrees) were room temp and the cheese was already hardening. It felt as if they had forgotten to deliver the food. Waitress was so kind and took the one off our check. It was appreciated. Boudin balls were great!! Bedford and remoulade sauces were okay. Parmesan potatoes were good!! Brussel sprouts and fries were fine-would have been better if served hot, I think. We did the pie flight and they were all good. Not mind blowing, but good. I always give out second chances-public service and food service is tough and sometimes you just have off days. Worth checking out if you live in town!! But if you're just passing through, maybe just get some pie to go.

Despite their relative popularity, they haven't had a review written about them in close to 3 years. They're most definitely open and the food is as decent as it's ever been. Outside of lunch, the place is hardly busy. It's a small'ish setup, with a good number of tables for quality company. Order at the counter and after a short wait, the food should be ready. Prices are fairly reasonable and the service is on point. Food wise, it's basically the same menu as fellow chain, Rice & Roux (#1). They thrive with the jambalaya and gumbo as their mains, which includes the pasta version of jambalaya aka "pastalaya." I enjoy all of the above, despite the gumbo being a tad bit on the soupier side. When in doubt, shoot for the jambalaya. From sides alone, I give a thumbs up to the potato salad and red beans and rice. While I love me a good mac and cheese, their version is not exactly my favorite. The combinations are a good way to sample a lot without ordering too much. Fingers crossed they'll be sticking around for awhile.
