Dorothy's is only open for a few days a week and for only a few hours at a time. It's cash only, sort of the middle of nowhere, with a somewhat unconventional ordering system. And yet, it's constantly slammed with people (#1) who are trying to get a bite of their addicting soul food. That's just how good it is while being as local as Baton Rouge gets. They're only open for a few days a week (Currently Thurs-Sunday) and only in the afternoon until 3 or 4 unless food runs out early (#2). They only recently stopped opening on Wednesdays and are not exactly good about utilizing social media to keep people updated (#3). Calling ahead is recommended to ensure they have anything available, let alone are open that day. If one is lucky enough to put in an order, then pull up into their parking lot and eventually an older gentleman smoking a cigarette will approach the car and ask for an order. Pay the man in cash and it'll be brought out. Try to pay in exact amounts because correct change is rarely given. The food is the main attraction and with good reason: it's delicious. It's guaranteed to be a diabetic's worst nightmare given how sweet everything is and is only getting more expensive in recent months at $12-15 a platter. For context, it less than $10 less than two years ago but people will continue to fork it over in an effort to fork something else. (#4) Stewed anything, be it pork chops or baked chicken is a must. It's so popular that it's served every day. The meatloaf was formally only on Wednesdays so I'm not sure when it's served anymore, but it's legit. Fried fish / chicken can be a gamble but usually it's worth the plunge. The sides are also fire. The candied yams are some of the sweetest I've had and will raise the blood sugar of anyone and quick. The stewed cabbage is probably my favorite but the potato salad is close behind. The mac and cheese is more like spaghetti and cheese, and albeit while strange, it's creamy and enjoyable. (#5) I'm still sad their "poor boy special" of red beans and rice with a sausage has been relegated to a side dish only. It was their cheapest main dish for awhile and probably one of the best versions of a common dish that I've ever had. It was savory and incredibly satisfying with every bite. It is with sincere hope that they will consider opening up other days and for longer. Super solid soul food spot in Baton Rouge. When I went they were only doing takeout orders. Not an issue, I was only staying about three minutes away. All the food was fresh and very flavorful. Maybe it was an off day but the red beans and rice were terrible , the fried fish and spaghetti were pretty good.

I haven't had this level of good soul food since going to a local spot in downtown Memphis when I was in school. The smothered turkey wings are fall-off-the-bone tender. The smothered cabbage and collard greens are tender and perfectly seasoned. The rice and gravy as good as any I've ever tasted. Cornbread is delicious. And sweet tea with lemonade is downright tasty. The wait is not long. A couple words of advice, bring cash and call ahead if you're taking it to go. Space is somewhat limited but most customers seemed to be getting takeout. I plan to be a regular here. Support locally owned small business. By the way, I got 5 orders to go for some friends (2 baked chicken, 2 fried fish and a smothered pork chop) and you now have 5 new customers. Dorthy's Soul Food Kitchen is a great home grown and locally owned business. I actually never knew about them being so close to my neighborhood, but Yelp does enlighten all. The restaurant has a simple formula. Good ole comfort and soul food done right and rotated slightly daily to give a little variety to the mix. The menu includes Pork Chips (smothered and Fried), Wings, Smothered Turkey Wings, and even Chitterlings if you feel adventurous on rotation. On this visit, I got the Smothered Turkey Wings, Rice and Gravy, candied yams, and Green Beans. Everything had great flavor and also was seasoned well. The Turkey was tender...fall off the bone tender! So why only 4 stars? Well the first is this is a cash only establishment. In this day and age, I would hope restaurants accept credit cards to make it more accessible to the masses. I'd be perfectly okay with them having us pay a service fee. The second was the food was strangely unevenly heated. So the sides of Yams and Green Beans were like center of the sun hot, while the Turkey Wings and Rice were lukewarm. So I think some parts were microwaved. Nothing wrong with that since the flavor was there, but just a watch out of you feel some type of way about that. Overall, definitely check out Dorothy's! When it comes to soul food places, let's just say I'm accustomed to waiting a long time so it doesn't bother me, BUT I called and placed my order an hour before I left to get my plate and still had to wait an additional 15 minutes, but nevertheless, the food was worth the wait. Honest to God, while we were there, The Temptations' limousine driver came through to put in an order for the band before their show at Lauberge tonight. If Dorothy's is good enough for the pioneers of psychedelic soul, it's good enough for me. This place is dangerous, man. Less than 2 minutes from my house, cheap, and porkchops so damn good I now believe in souls and the innate goodness of humankind. Collard greens and yams are my favorite mix of sweet/savory and the mac and cheese was creamy and seasoned with a bit of a cayenne kick. They give you good raven sized portions (roughly 110 lbs of food.) It's a hole in the wall, and the service is friendly. Ya maw maw is probably in the back helping cook the cornbread. read more
