Split plate Pastalaya and Jambalaya with two sides
    Treace M.

This was is a split plate of pastalaya and jambalaya with two sides and a sausage and chicken gumbo for $10. I had a total of 6 slices of sausage throughout all dishes mentioned and tons and chunks of chicken. The sausage and chicken gumbo was very bland and I had to add salt and gumbo file to make it edible. Red beans and rice tasted like the refrigerator so I could only stomach one fork of it. Green beans the purchase a donation. I would not recommend this place to anyone wanting a good jambalaya. I just can't.

All I can say about this place is that almost everything was bland, not much flavor at all. The jambalaya was salty and full of chicken and hardly any sausage as was the gumbo. However, the green beans and fountain drinks were good. Prices are reasonable also.

Can you find more gourmet Cajun cuisine at a dozen other places in Baton Rouge? Maybe so. But when you want a tasty and reasonably priced meal served up fast, Pot & Paddle is your place. It's a casual, self-service restaurant in the Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center. Customers order at the counter or run in to pick up takeout. Either way the service is lightning fast. I ordered a Meal Deal with a fountain drink; before I even filled my cup, my food had arrived. MEAL DEAL The value was almost unbelievable. For one Hamilton, I got a combo platter piled with jambalaya, pastalaya, chicken & sausage gumbo, two sides (white beans and salad) and a roll. Technically, I was supposed to choose between jambalaya and pastalaya but the guy behind the counter suggested half portions so I could try them both. Everything was piping hot and flavorful. The pasta was several notches beyond al dente but was saved by a generous dose of chicken and sausage. To my surprise it wasn't spicy at all. Tabasco and Crystal Hot Sauce were on every table so customers could make any necessary adjustments. Since Pot & Paddle finds the sweet spot of convenient, cheap and delicious, it's A-OK in my book.

Meal deal: Jambalaya, gumbo, and two sides. Ten bucks.

The food was good, and the portions are more than generous. My husband and I both got the meal deal, so we were able to try to jambalaya and the pastalaya. Both were tasty, but I preferred the jambalaya a bit more. The gumbo could have used a bit more flavor, and tasted better after adding creole seasoning and hot sauce. Nice restrooms and easy parking.

Pasta jambalaya, gumbo, white beans and cole slaw. The chick melted in your mouth, yummy!

Always good consistent tasy food. They have it down to a science. The meal deal is my favorite.

It gives a nice chill vibe and you feel right at home. They have a clear glass divide and you can see all their soul food lined up in the warming pans. I ordered the red beans and rice with smoked sausage, spaghetti and cheese, green beans and cornbread. Everything was delicious and served fresh and hot. The red beans were seasoned well with a hint of sweetness and loaded with meat. The green beans and spaghetti and cheese were great as well as the cornbread. The service was fast and great. All of the staff were so kind.

I ordered the Thursday special, and overall, the food lacked real flavor. The only seasoning that stood out was black pepper. At this point, I've come to realize that not everyone has the same standard when it comes to good food. The atmosphere had its positives--the building is nice and the space was cool--but the music was so loud that we couldn't comfortably hold a conversation, and the temperature was actually a bit too cold to fully enjoy dining in. The only items I genuinely enjoyed were the fountain drinks and the Hawaiian roll. The rest of the meal fell short. The mashed potatoes were overly saturated with gravy, and while the yams had potential, they needed more sweetness--brown sugar especially. I could taste hints of butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg, but it just didn't come together. Service-wise, the staff was polite but lacked warmth or personality. The interaction felt dry and uninviting. Even with my experience, the restaurant stayed busy, with customers continuing to come in. I really wish the food had matched my expectations, because I wanted to enjoy it--but it just wasn't for me.

I had really been looking forward to trying Parrain's Seafood, but unfortunately my experience was…read moredisappointing. Our waitress, Kate M., didn't have the best customer service. She came across as short, unfriendly, and overall not very pleasant. I first ordered a Banana Foster's Martini, but she came back and said they didn't have the ingredients. No problem--I asked for an Espresso Martini instead. A few minutes later, after bringing everyone else's drinks, she returned and simply said they couldn't make that either and asked if I wanted something else. At that point, I just declined. When it was time to order, our table had nine people. She took my husband's order, then went around the table taking everyone else's order. By the time she got back to me, she said, "Okay, is that it?" I had to remind her that she hadn't taken my order yet. I ordered the crab and corn bisque, a salad, and the stuffed catfish with creamed spinach. The salad came out quickly and was very good. Then everyone else at the table received their meals while I only received my bisque. After waiting, I was told my stuffed catfish "didn't come out right" and had to be remade. At that point, I honestly wondered if it was a joke. It wasn't. By the time my entrée arrived, everyone else was nearly finished eating. To the restaurant's credit, they did remove the stuffed catfish from my bill, and I appreciated that. However, the entire experience left me feeling overlooked from start to finish. My biggest suggestion would be for our waitress to work on her customer service. A smile goes a long way. Saying things like "Give me that plate," slamming cups onto the table, and appearing annoyed throughout the meal doesn't create a welcoming dining experience. Hospitality is just as important as the food, and I hope this feedback is taken constructively.
