As one of the better local Louisiana based chains, Pot & Paddle's solo Baton Rouge location was a popular lunch options and comfort food destination. Despite their relative popularity, they haven't had a review written about them in close to 3 years. They're most definitely open and the food is as decent as it's ever been. Outside of lunch, the place is hardly busy. It's a small'ish setup, with a good number of tables for quality company. Order at the counter and after a short wait, the food should be ready. Prices are fairly reasonable and the service is on point. Food wise, it's basically the same menu as fellow chain, Rice & Roux (#1). They thrive with the jambalaya and gumbo as their mains, which includes the pasta version of jambalaya aka "pastalaya." I enjoy all of the above, despite the gumbo being a tad bit on the soupier side. When in doubt, shoot for the jambalaya. From sides alone, I give a thumbs up to the potato salad and red beans and rice. While I love me a good mac and cheese, their version is not exactly my favorite. The combinations are a good way to sample a lot without ordering too much. Fingers crossed they'll be sticking around for awhile. This is a great option for catering a fun and casual event. I ordered the jambalaya and white bean combos for 70. I was on a tight budget and they are very reasonably priced. Even their delivery fee is super low--the only place I could afford delivery rather than having to manage pick up. The man who delivered was communicative on the day of the event, so I knew exactly when to meet him. That reduced a lot of stress! This was is a split plate of pastalaya and jambalaya with two sides and a sausage and chicken gumbo for $10. I had a total of 6 slices of sausage throughout all dishes mentioned and tons and chunks of chicken. The sausage and chicken gumbo was very bland and I had to add salt and gumbo file to make it edible. Red beans and rice tasted like the refrigerator so I could only stomach one fork of it. Can you find more gourmet Cajun cuisine at a dozen other places in Baton Rouge? Maybe so. But when you want a tasty and reasonably priced meal served up fast, Pot & Paddle is your place. It's a casual, self-service restaurant in the Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center. Customers order at the counter or run in to pick up takeout. Either way the service is lightning fast. I ordered a Meal Deal with a fountain drink; before I even filled my cup, my food had arrived. MEAL DEAL The value was almost unbelievable. For one Hamilton, I got a combo platter piled with jambalaya, pastalaya, chicken & sausage gumbo, two sides (white beans and salad) and a roll. Technically, I was supposed to choose between jambalaya and pastalaya but the guy behind the counter suggested half portions so I could try them both. Everything was piping hot and flavorful. The pasta was several notches beyond al dente but was saved by a generous dose of chicken and sausage. To my surprise it wasn't spicy at all. Tabasco and Crystal Hot Sauce were on every table so customers could make any necessary adjustments. I returned this afternoon for more from this lovely little restaurant. I had Gumbo with generous portions of sausage and dark meat chicken cooked to perfection is a roux based gumbo. I added sides of coleslaw and potato salad, both simple and tasty. I had crisp unsweetened iced tea with lemon juice. I did add ranch dressing to my coleslaw and potato salad but they would have been fine alone. The chicken is delicious with just the right balance of sausage for variety. People aren't kidding when they say you get a boat-load of food. It really is excessive to be honest. Service was quick as hell too as I took it for takeout. I don't know what seasoning down here is supposed to be like, so I only judge based on whether I like it or not. As someone from around here, I guess you would like this place. As someone from anywhere else, well, there's some stuff left to be desired. However, I can't say anything ill of the portioning of the food nor the swiftness of getting the food from the kitchen to you. I do wish there was more meat substance to the dish though, rather than just having cups and cups and cups of carbs (rice/pasta) everywhere. It'd be nice if they could cut back the carbs just so they could throw in some more chicken pieces and sausages. It tastes and feels like homecooking y'all. for many reasons, I absolutely enjoy this establishment. I'll break it down into pros and cons. Pros: - prices. buy one plate and get 2-3 meals out of it - quantity/serving size (refer to above statement) - flavors are fantastic. the gumbo and jambalaya are the true cajun style (no tomatoes) and have lots of that roasty, delicious fond flavor throughout. my first time there I found my potato salad and pastalaya to be over salted to the point of barely being edible, but I haven't had that issue since. Cons: - the customer service is... sufficient at best. you place your order at the front counter, assigned a number then pick up your meals when your number is called. I wouldn't exactly say any of the employees are happy to work there. All communication is very dull, and it seems as if they can't wait to get off of work. - Small seating area. If you want to have a table to sit at, plan on getting there as soon as they open. - Because the space is so small, when the line to order backs up (at times it's so long is trails out the door) the customers waiting in line are very close to most of the tables while customers are dining. Nothing like having a line of sweaty summer butts parading less than a foot from your face! - there isn't an open to-go station, so if you want a to-go box (and you certainly will) you have to wait in line behind the people ordering. My husband and I took a detour and stopped here for a late lunch based on reviews. We shared a plate of jambalaya and bowl of gumbo. Pros: the place is very neat and clean. Easy to find with GPS. Friendly and quick service. Biiiiig portions! Easy to navigate menu. It is very affordable and you get a good deal for the portions-you will likely have leftovers. The sausages that were in the jambalaya were excellent! Cons: honestly, aside from the sausage the food had NO flavor or spice. The gumbo was literally a few pieces of chicken drowning in a bland broth. Very disappointing for a restaurant that advertises itself as Cajun. There was hot sauce on the tables but even it wouldn't have helped much. The food "sat really heavy" and my husband and I have been dealing with awful stomach pains since last night, which we are both sure was caused by the food we ate there especially since we haven't been able to eat much since. my dad did not want the shrimp stew i got him so i ate it. or tried. they cut back from the big go box to the small 3 partition one. i have never before been able to eat it all. i got the stew with green beans and corn. the beans were straight out the can, with no doctoring. the corn was so hard, i could not eat it. now let's talk about the shrimp stew. like i said they are using the small go boxes now. the stew, loosely covered less than half of the big partition. the shrimp were so tough, you almost had to swallow them whole, because there was no chewing and enjoying them. i might expect something like this in a third world country; but in south louisiana? and then pay 10.00 plus tax??? never again. read more

The jambalaya here is pretty good to me. I never had this kind before, the brown version. Which I guess is real Cajun. I've been eating the red kind alot. Both kinds are good though! Haha. The flavor is pretty deep and there is alot of meat (chicken and sauauage) in relation to rice. Other places seem to skimp a little. I got the meal deal. There is alot of food. It's enough for 2 meals. Sides where alright. I prefer seafood gumbo, but the sausage/chicken gumbo was good to me. Chicken was tender. The rice was kinda mushy though. Holy yum. Recently I tried to go to the jambalaya shop to get some food and it just wasn't as great as I had remembered it to be. I decided to venture out the other day because I was craving jambalaya and gumbo. When I walked in this place it was really clean and neatly decorated. I ordered the meal plate (((( which was perfect because I was craving gumbo and jambalaya )))) and for such a good price I couldn't pass it up. I'm only visiting Baton Rouge but I'm used to New Orleans cooking. I had the jambalaya the other night and it was delicious then. I came back for the meal deal. A large portion of jambalaya, (the jambalaya is exceptional) nice sized portion of potato salad, white beans and generous serving of gum with two rolls for $10. Everything is seasoned well, spicy but not overly so. If you want very spicy, they offer hot sauce at each table if you eat in. If you take it home and want spicy, add your favorite. Fast service and a simple straightforward menu. They know what they're good at, and cook it to perfection. My fave from here is the pastalaya and coleslaw. I'm not a big bean eater but I've been told both the red and white beans are excellent. They usually have a daily special as well apart from the usual menu.
