Came into town to visit LSU and Elsie's was recommended as one of the best places to eat in Baton Rouge. After 6 hours of traveling I was up for anything!! We arrived on a Sunday at 11:45am. So right in the middle of the brunch rush. We were quoted a35 minute wait but was seated sooner. We ordered lunch. I got the chicken pot pie my partner got the bbq bayou burger and we split an order of the crawfish pie with red beans and rice. Both plates were served with a salad. Service was great! Jack was our server. He made some excellent recommendations!! The chicken pot pie had a kick to if so fyi....Everything was delicious!! Turns out we got and order of the boudin pie instead of the crawfish pie but it was delicious! He did bring us out a crawfish pie to try (not pictured) and it was also excellent!! The red beans and rice were the best I've had. And I've done a red beans and rice tour in NOLA and this was the best I've had!! We rounded out our meal with the Eye of the Tiger pie. And holey moley!!! The best finish to our meal!! They also have a great craft beer selection on draft. Loved this little hole in the wall place! It's a pretty neat vibe and the food is outstanding. You park behind the building and come in through the back, which is their main entrance. We came from out of town and they were able to sit us rather quickly with two children. Food was delivered fresh and fast. Our kids loved their burger. We go to Elsie's frequently. All of my photos are from numerous visits. I typically get the Boudin or Bayou BQQ Burger however, I also like their Avocado Sandwich. My Wife typically gets their Natchitoches Meat Pies or Poulet Pot Pie. We also love their brussel sprouts and pies, the Eye of the Tiger being our favorite. They also have a good selection of drinks and beers. For some reason the smell of this place reminds me of an elementary or middle school cafeteria. The service is typically okay. The waiters/waitresses are typically quiet and very short verbally or super friendly, no in between imo. Elsie's also has very good sweet tea. The tea actually tastes like tea if that makes sense. This was my first time going and I will be back! The food was so good! My boyfriend the pork chop and it was very good seasoned well and not dry at all! It had a nice blueberry glaze and it definitely topped it off! The side he chose was red beans and the red beans were very good too and seasoned very well! When traveling with a small kid, bathrooms are important too and it does kinda ruin the experience with food if the bathroom is kinda gross because you wonder about the staff. First time at Elsie's and I can definitely say it won't be the last! I've been hearing how good it is and they did not disappoint. We had about a 15 minute wait for a table for 2 on a Friday night. Our waitresses were so tentative and kind! We started with the boudin cakes! Really tasty with the avocado cream sauce. My husband kept wishing there were more than two! lol For entrees, I tried the crawfish hand pie and Brussel sprouts, along with a berry kick side salad! Everything was good. I particularly liked the fried jalapeños on the salad!! My husband ordered the Big Plate, includes fish, shrimp,and stuffed shrimp. I love them, but they really need to cook their fish through and through. It was the second occasion where the fish wasn't quite cooked right and of course you know if fish isn't cooked right it could be salmonella issues. I got sick on one time. This is a MUST go type place when in Baton Rouge! Such unique and oh soooo good dishes. Their pies are what they are known for and all that I get and you really cannot go wrong with any of them. They have dessert pies and lunch/dinner pies and their lunch/dinner pies take the cake for me (and I am a dessert guy). The place is not big, but they always seem to get people in/out quick so there is never much of a wait. The service is great and they always take great care of you!! It turns out that Elsie's is not related, but they do have great pies. My colleague had fried catfish with french fries, and I had stuffed shrimp with french fries. Both were really great, although they could've given us half as many fries and we would've been just as happy. We both ordered their eye of the tiger pie, which is a lemon icebox pie with a blueberry whipped cream topping, so it has LSU colors. The ambience was as good as it could be although we were confused about two semi private spaces that each had two tables that seat four. I would go back again over and over. read more

Elsie's, known for their pies, carries versions that are both savory and sweet in addition to a large menu of Southern-style comfort dishes with Cajun and Creole flavors. I got the seafood lafourche bisque and the blackened catfish sandwich. My friend got the honey chop, and we also shared the seafood pot pie. The seafood bisque: made with plenty of seafood bites is a super flavorful bisque broth - recommend! The honey chop: tender pork chop in their signature pepper jelly bbq - highly recommend! Seafood Pot Pie: I can see why they're known for pies! While on the heavier side, it was deliciousness in every bite - highly recommend. -- The blackened catfish sandwich: not worth it. Almost seemingly an afterthought on the menu... the blackened catfish itself was tasty but the simplicity of the lettuce, tomato and white bread (ok, sourdough) did not bring it together and was super bland and plain - do not recommend. It would have been better if they had a blackened catfish dish rather than this sandwich. -- Unfortunately service was also really slow. Our drinks (waters) and seafood bisque came out quick but we waited 35-40 minutes for the rest of our food. Our server informed us that the honey chop would be 20 minutes, which we were okay with, but after 35 minutes we were growing more and more impatient, especially given that it wasn't too busy at the time and our server never acknowledged the long delay. Inside, it's an industrial look and feel and on the trendier side. And even with setbacks, I'd definitely come back for their pies, and avoid the catfish sandwich. read more

I was in Baton Rouge visiting family and since I'm always the one chosen to pick the place we eat at I chose this place of many pictures alone. It did not disappoint. We had the crawfish queso and cracklin as an appetizer. That was delicious. The cracklin was fried perfectly and the queso was flavorful. For entrees we had the seafood pot pie and the boudin melt. Both were amazing. The seafood pot pie crust was flaky and soft and butter and the filling was everything I wanted it too be. It was creamy with lots of flavor and just enough seafood. The boudin melt was unlike anything I've ever had but I'm so glad I got it because it was really good. The bread was soft, crunchy, and buttery. We also had the spicy watermelon margarita. Honestly I'm not sure what made me get this because I you l usually don't like spicy margaritas. This changed my mind. I love spicy margaritas now, at least the ones from Elsie's. What an amazing find! DO NOT be fooled by the front of the building & the surrounding area!!! Haul yo a$$ around to the back (there's a parking lot off the 1 way street) and put your name on the list. We arrived about 1:00 on Labor Day and it was a 45 min wait, but we snagged a couple of bar seats. The special for the day was hot dogs. Hmmm... but wait!! These were NOT what you think, we ordered a Diablo Shrimp Melt and the hot dog with Pimento Cheese, Bacon, & house made Blueberry Pepper Jelly & Fried Pickles. Now I know how this sounds, but WOW!! Just WOW!! The melt was good, but sweet Baby Jeezus that dog was FANTASTICAL! First things first. Our server, Lily, was phenomenal. My husband and I are both fast drinkers and she had a refill ready every time. She was very pleasant to talk to and we had several conversations. She was so helpful and we loved her. I had never been here and was stumped between two dishes but ultimately got the Steak Frites. Tell me why the best steak I've ever had in my life was from a pie shop? It was PHENOMENAL and cooked to perfected. I prefer medium rare and few restaurants cook that preference well and Elsie's exceeded my expectations. The sweet pies were fantastic and very yummy. Their homemade pork rinds weren't overly crunchy and the perfect paring for the crawfish queso. The place itself is very cute and worth the extra minute to find the parking lot. I called ahead asking if they had gluten free items which they said they did. Turns out gluten free is just the regular menu items without the bun etc at the same price as the regular menu items. We ended up having to send the burger back because they left fried onions on there which had crumbled when we tried to take them off. When they brought out the new burger, they took all that toppings off besides the cheese. Burger was supposed to have mushrooms etc on there. My avocado sandwich was pretty good but missing flavor. The GF appetizer we shared was very good. The waiter was very nice and I know the problem with the burger was not his fault. Had a delicious meal at Elsie's! It was easy to come in and sit at the bar at lunch on the weekend and they have a good amount of other seating inside too. You're immediately greeted with all their sweet pies on display when you walk in. A very big temptation. For starters, I highly recommend the boudin cakes. The seafood pot pie was to die for, so rich and so delicious. The crawfish hand pie was also really good but the seafood pot pie was the stand out. Their entrees also come with a side salad and we tried their signature pepper jelly vinaigrette. It was pretty sweet but was still pretty good. I can see why a lot of people like this restaurant. My colleague wasn't a big fan, maybe its too fru-fru for him but I enjoyed my experience. They have fun things on the menu like savory pies, crawfish queso with chicharones, boudain cakes and 7 different kinds of melts. I also loved how they have 3 different kinds of sauces and 4 different kinds of pepper jelly to compliment your entree. Not to mention 7 different kinds of cheeses to pick from or sub for. I tried the blackberry margarita and steak frites with brussel sprouts. We also ordered the crawfish queso as our app. My colleague ordered the seafood platter. The margarita is very small and really lasted just a few sips. It's served in a small rocks glass and decent, but geez, too small. Steak frites - this meal really hit the spot for me. The steak was thick, tender and cooked exactly how I requested. It was the priciest entree but well worth it. The butter on top of the steak helps elevate this dish. The brussel sprouts weren't crispy for the most part, as the menu indicated, but that's fine as they tasted pretty good regardless. My colleague, who is a native from Baton Rouge had never heard of this restaurant, so basically that means it wasn't on his "approved list" and he ate all his food, just didn't like the atmosphere. Easiest the best dinner I've had this year. Elsie's is living with cozy ambiance and warm service. The menu ranges from sweet to savory and features every pie I know of and a few more, look a little further down and you'll find a stellar selection of melts salads and sandwiches. Flip it over they've got such great mains my only complaint is I could hardly make up my mind on what to order. It had been awhile since eating at Elsie's. Our server, Hayley, was just fantastic. I tried the Arlington poorboy for the first time as well. It was a delight to all the senses and hit all notes on flavor. That touch of sweet spicy sauce for the shrimp was devine. The blackened catfish sandwich is a favorite as well. Just doesn't miss.
