Capitol City Grill was an amazing restaurant I just happened upon while I was downtown walking one day. I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It was nice and open and full of light coming in the windows. There were a lot of people there on a Saturday. We ordered multiple things off the menu. We got their grilled pork chops which came with mashed potatoes and an amazing sauce. I got the pulled pork sandwich with their shoestring fries. Everything was amazing. It came out hot and fresh and delicious. I didn't have a single complaint. The service was also good and their staff was helpful and answered any questions we had. Please avoid this place. Went for Restaurant Week and was completely disappointed. Food was not good...grease bombs and burnt cake that wasn't worth the calories. We will never be going back. Ambiance: The real estate of this establishment is wasted on this restaurant. Beautiful downtown location with a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at pretty foliage and the I-10 bridge. The interior? Dirty, cracking, grease splattered walls with dusty canvas paintings. Service: our waiter was very kind and attentive and should be working in a nicer establishment. I've explored a good chunk of the menu and haven't found a single miss, but if you're looking for my recommendation, go with the grilled pork chops. Fair warning you'll probably need a nap afterward. A nice place downtown to grab some good food! I was meeting someone who was staying at the Hotel Indigo, and this was right across the street the street, so it was a perfect place. Parking is difficult, but that's typical of downtown BR. I parked in the parking garage not far from the restaurant, and it was fine. We sat at the bar because the restaurant was a tad crowded for a Thursday night. There were plenty of open seats at the bar and tons of TVs to watch. The bartender was great and service was good. We came in December, so it was tastefully decorated for the holidays. I got the chicken Caesar wrap and my friend got the shrimp po boy. The wrap was so good and the fries were delicious! It's a pretty large restaurant with a bar area, but the bar area was pretty full. So we sat in a booth. Our waiter came out quickly and brought menus and water. It was still happy hour, so ordered the Pretty in Pink for me and the New Old Fashion for him! For our app, we ordered the boudin balls. For my entree, I ordered the 1/2 & 1/2 seafood platter and my husband ordered the Catfish Etoufee. The boudin balls were not good. They were fried too hard and the boudin filling was bland. My catfish platter was better, although the fish and shrimp could have used more seasoning. My husband's catfish etoufee was good, but over salted. Also, the hushpuppies tasted old and stale. The wait for our food was quite long, and the food was just mediocre. In fact, I was slightly disappointed. I ordered the 1/2 and 1/2 platter. The fried fish was decent, but the fried shrimp was super dry and hard to eat. More than half of the plate was covered in french fries which were also super dry and not tasty. We were in Baton Rouge and we asked someone where we should go for lunch and she said that her favourite place was the Capital City grill so we went for it. We got I. There and it was packed'. Lots of families and big tables. Good sign but it slowed the service down. That said, our server Emma was wonderful and took care of us. The food overall was pretty darned good - my burger was great but their seafood and sausage gumbo was nothing less than fantastic. However, my wife couldn't eat her omelette because there was a oool of grease inside but they took it off the bill. She said her salad was great. It was when we got to the bathrooms that she had some issues. Came to BR to visit a friend, felt a little munchy and stopped by this place, Capital City Grill. Since it was game day it wasn't too crowded at all so we were seated expeditiously. For the appetizers, we got fried alligator, hush puppies, crawfish bread, and the banger shrimp. I'll rate them order of best to least favorite. 1. Hushpuppies-I shut my behind right on up. They melted in my mouth. Were filled with bacon, cheese, and some other stuff I can't remember. But I know they were so good to me. 2. Banger shrimp, their version of bang bang shrimp. Pretty good. I think it could have been fried a little longer. But also not a Bonefish Grill bang bang, which is the standard! 3. Alligator- the remoulade sauce was quite tasty. However, the fried alligator needed more time in the grease. If you get it, I suggest requesting an extra crispy 4. Crawfish bread. It looked like the took crawfish etouffee on top of jalapeño cornbread. And I don't suggest. But apparently it's a hot commodity at the restaurant. The air conditioner was not working, which seems to happen based on previous reviews. It's hard to enjoy anything when you're sweating, and feeling even worse for the poor staff working under those conditions. I've always relied on this spot for casual but nice place to eat before a show downtown. I feel like it's gone down a bit and could use a little tweaking of the menu. Boudin balls and fried mozzarella were ok but tasted like the oil in the fryer was on its last leg. The queso is a sad abomination and needs to be taken off the menu. I ordered the Boudin balls which were tasty and fried well, but had an odd consistency compared to what I am used to. I wasn't impressed with this restaurant during this dining experience. This was my second time dining here for lunch. For an appetizer, I tried the Capital City queso served with warm tortilla chips. The chips were good but the queso was just ok. I definitely would not order it again. It didn't really have much of a taste. For my entrée, I ordered the cheeseburger with cheddar cheese, onions, pickles, and mustard. I was disappointed when it arrived because there was mayo underneath the pickles and no onions. My server was very nice and offered to take it back to fix it. The burger was just ok and definitely on the greasy side. The fries that came with the burger were super soggy. I wouldn't order this again as an entrée. Overall, food wasn't so great, service was slow, and the booth I was sitting in was busted pretty bad. The bathroom was also not the cleanest and parking took a while. Be prepared to pay to park in a parking lot or parking garage downtown if you cannot find street parking.
