I've been to dosa hut twice now, and it's a very good authentic spot for dosas. I've tried the masala dosa and their gunpowder masala dosa. It comes out quickly with a side of 2 chutneys and bowl of sambar. I love a good sambar and they have a solid delicious one that pairs well with their dosas. The inside is casual, you can stop by for a quick bite. The masala dosa was $8 so it made for a good affordable weeknight meal. It's counter service and they have a friendly staff. The area has a lot of South Indian restaurants, but I don't feel inclined to try others because Dosa Hut consistently hits the spot. Overall, this place is good for the homesick South Indian. One who wants an authentic no-frills dosa. I will be coming back whenever I'm in the area! read more

Sad to say I never visited yesteryear Dosa Hut, so I'll take people's word that it was good back in the day--but you know what? Todayyear Dosa Hut is still pretty awesome, so I'm happy with that. If you want the most interesting flavor bomb in your mouth, try the Gunpowder Onion Chili Masala Dosa, which lives up to every part of its name (including the bang). The classic Butter Masala Dosa is as big and crispy as possible without breaking apart, while the Rava Masala Dosa offers a different-textured wrap that's just as exciting. I was too stuffed to try more than a bite of the Vada Pav, but remember it being fluffy and flavorful. Not sure I'll ever get around to having a full one since I'm going to be trying as many dosas as I can here every time I make the schlep over. I'm not going to pretend to know much about dosas, I don't, but Indian friends have brought me here because they love it; I do too. There are more than dosas on the menu but that's all I've had. They are amazing. Don't worry if you are the only people there, it is a small place and sometimes that's how it is. Last weekend I had a masala dosa with potato (aloo), it was amazing, and I don't use the word lightly. It was an explosion of flavor. Really great. I'm not so familiar with a lot of dosa and vegetarian cuisine, so I relied on pictures and what my stomach seems to like. Pictures really helped. We ordered a few items, including a dosa with potato. Dont think of a dosa as an appetizer. It is a meal on its own so order what looks good for you. Ask the attendant for recommendation as well. The food all came out relatively quickly. Fresh and well made. Spicy but not too spicy. Ask for the spice level and if you are sensitive to spicy food, this may not be your spot. Tip, gets ice cream at the end of the meal. I ordered South Indian vegetarian thaali to-go through Uber Eats. Came with rice, papad, rasam, sambhar, daal palak, kesari sweet and yoghurt chutney. This was basic. On top of it, you get to choose 2 veg curries amongst a list of 5. I chose Aloo dal and bhaingan curry. You have a choice between three chappatis or two parathas. I chose chappatis. Food came hot. It was not oily. Spice level was optimal. It was better than it's competitor Sapthagiri - oily, salty and pricier. I ordered Mango Mazza along with the thaali. I walked in and felt I had returned to India! Incense was burning in front of a shrine to Ganesh - the Elephant God. I have been searching for a "real" Masala Dosa since I left India more than 15 years ago. I was not disappointed! The dosa itself was crispy, hot, and flavorful. The potato and spice filling was tasty and the sambal and both chutneys (coconut and something spicy) that accompanied the Dosa complimented it very well. I also ordered chai and it, too, was hot, spicy and delicious. Street parking was impossible! My Indian boyfriend took me here to try a masala dosa for the first time, as he comes here with his family when they visit from India. It was a delicious Dosa and I fell in love with the masala potatoes which I need to figure out how to make at home. Everything is vegetarian here, so that is good or bad, depending on whether or not that will seem filling to you. You also unfortunately have to contend with dining on styrofoam plates with plastic utensils, in very basic dining surroundings with a messy kitchen. Gluten-free friendly - the dosa is made with lentil and rice flour. Just double check and ask what is made with semolina and they will tell you! Was here 2 days ago with a couple of friends. The food was decent, but the service was terrible. We were at the store at around 9:45PM and placed an order for six items. We had to go back to the woman at the counter from time to time to show our receipt and remind her to get our food. They have ZERO accountability and food is given off to anyone who claims it first, and not by the order number. Some of the items in our order were taken away by others, which meant that we had to wait longer. 4 out of the 6 items in our order were wrongly given to us. When we protested that they were not the items we ordered, we were given a choice to either take them or wait even longer. The lady at the counter got even more rude as time passed. This place is hands down 5 stars if it wasn't for the unnecessary rudeness of the person at front counter. I normally order out via one of the many meal delivery services to work. Yesterday however I decided to call ahead and pick it up myself. The order was ready within 15 minutes and packed for me when I arrived. Sambhar however was a bit cold for my taste and the onion chilli corriender uttapam was a little too well done. Nothing a microwave can't fix. Also I believe the size of the uttapam was a little smaller to accommodate the container it was put in. This is in comparison to what you'd normally get when eating in. I have been eating here with my two kids for a long time but to my disgust found a dead fried cockroach in the masala dosa I was feeding my 4 year old today , I just happen to notice the dead roach. It's perfect for what it sets out to be. I've been coming to Dosa Hut ever since I was a little kid. I've seen it change owners several times, and saw it undergo several remodelings. Sometimes the food has been good, other times not, right now the current ownership is doing just fine. Sambar is still free and delicious and the dosa is spicy and buttery. The food itself is not extraordinary, it's just good, not great just good. But at the price you can buy it for it's excellent and that's what earns it the 5 stars. Dosa Hut's flavours are authentic, delivery is relatively quick, and the amount of food you get for the money is absolutely staggering. I ordered a South India thali: 3 pieces of chapati, 3 curries (palak paneer {spinach and fresh cheese} veggie korma {mixed veggies in an almond cream sauce}, aloo mattar {potatoes and peas in a thick curry}), steamed daal, coconut chutney, tomato chutney, raita, and rice. What you could expect: A 10-15 minute wait for a long crispy, warm Dosa, and when you crack it in half (it's easier to eat), the potatoes and vegetables are piping hot and smothered in curry. The spices and (whatever you get in your dosa) are a hidden gem in the Dosa! :) *You can tell i'm very passionate haha Anywho, the Dosa comes with chutneys and free sambhar. Any place that has "Dosa" in its name gets three stars! But, they have to work much harder to earn any more... Let us get the good stuff out of the way first :). Supply chain: very efficient and orderly. Employees: smiling and customer-focused. When I review a (fast-food, low cost) place like this, I avoid trying to rate them on ambiance, decor and such - it is unfair to them to expect them to offer a meal for 8 bucks and be compared to four seasons or even for that matter any other upscale Indian restaurant. Now the food: the coconut chutney is my single important deciding factor in giving an establishment 5 stars. What is served here is an apology for a chutney. The Sambhar and dosas themselves are fairly standard - crisp but vaguely lacking in taste and the mildly sour "bite" that is the result of a well-prepared batter. And, out of the couple of occasions that I have eaten here, one has been a 4-star and another a 2-star experience in terms of taste alone. So much for consistency - and that is a problem because if in a mass-production factory like this, if they are not consistent, then there is really no reason anyone would come here. In this respect, the Dosa man in Washington square park takes the cake. I bet this place can do much better with their experience and locked in customer base (if you are in Newark avenue and sell Dosas, let's just say you will never run out of business). read more
