Two years later my employer offered HMSA so I wanted to go back to see her for a colonoscopy procedure. I called her office December 2024 was told because I hadn't seen Dr. Tamai in two years I would need to be referred to her by my primary physician. I did that and followed through with my primary physician to make sure they sent Dr. Tamai a referral. They said they did so I called her office to confirm. In January 2025 Her office told me they don't take Kaiser medical insurance and I had to explain everything all over to them again. I asked if they received the referral from my primary physician and was told they did not. Now it's February 2025. I called Dr. Tamai's office and they told me they won't take me as a new patient and should find another gastroenterologist to see me for my colonoscopy procedure. I can only imagine what would happen to me if this was an emergency situation that needed treatment.

I told him about my horrible experience at the Kaiser Urgent Care (since nothing else was open on Monday-a holiday). I told him about how they just treated me like a number and didn't run any tests (no nose swab to test for flu, no bloodwork, etc). All the doctor did was ask some questions and told me to basically rest it out and take Over the Counter meds (which I already told him wasn't working). I really felt like he was trying to get in and out of his office. Honestly I've had much better experience at the Straub Urgent Care but my insurance doesn't cover that :( Anyways, knowing that my insurance changed from HMSA to Kaiser, he printed out coupons from Good Rx and was so apologetic about my experience at Urgent Care even though it wasn't even his fault. He properly diagnosed why I was having the type of coughing I am and gave me the right medications for it (because that's what a doctor should do). As busy as he is with flu season, he was caring and even remembers details about my life/profession. While I can't promise every person is going to have the same experience, I can say that there's a reason I've seen him for years. I won't be switching doctors until I can find someone comparable in-network. This happened even when I explained to the prep team that I have thin shin and that my skin tears and bruise easily. They did put ointment on and bandage the tear and gave me some disinfectant and ointment to take home to care for it and they did call the next day and left a message to see if my procedure went well and I was ok, but I could not answer for I was not home at the time, it also mentioned that I not need to return the call and that I could contact my PCP or my surgeon. Had this procedure done twice before six months apart at another location and I did not experience anything like this.

You know you're an old man when your GP says it's time to get a colonoscopy screening done. She…read morereferred me to Surgicare which is Straub's outpatient surgery clinic. There was a bit of an issue getting the appointment setup once my GP sent over the referral. Instead of it being a seamless process with them calling me to schedule like other referrals, I had to call them and they sort of found my referral and then we got the process started. The nurse gave me clear instructions for the prep. My check in time on those instructions was 1130 for a 1pm procedure. The day before one of the nurses on the surgical team called me and asked me to check in at 1030am. Great. So the morning of, I had questions with the timing because of the prep stuff and called them at 6am just to confirm that I should come in earlier. The front desk folks didn't get that memo and said my scheduled time was 1130. At around 10am, the same nurse called me and said that my surgeon Dr Ikeguchi is fast so I could come in at 1030 and it would be fine. So a bit of confusion there between the surgical team and the front desk folks. No big deal but I was left pretty confused about the timing of everything vis a vis my prep. Anyway, my partner drives me over there. We park in the attached garage. It was free but I don't know if that's normal. There was no place to get a ticket from the machine. On the way out we had to scan a barcode to get the arm to lift up. YMMV on that part. Upon arrival, I checked in and was ushered back fairly promptly. Since this is an outpatient clinic, it was a bit of a cattle call. Lots of people in beds getting ready for surgery. I think there was like 8 beds in the staging area where you undress, ask questions, and they hook you up to ivs or whatever. It was there I met my surgeon Dr. Ikeguchi. She was warm, but also no nonsense. She answered all my questions and was out. Then I met my anesthesiologist Dr. Tal Leyshon who was awesome. Much more friendly and very warm. He made sure I didn't have any more questions and assured me this would be super quick. From there they take you back to the procedure room where your team is waiting. The nurse calls out the patient and procedure info to the team. Dr. Leyshon has the propofol ready to go. As he's injecting it he's like you'll be out in 30 seconds. I was out in 30 seconds. Next thing I knew, I was waking up a little groggy with cottonmouth. They gave me some water. Had me dress once I could stand and I was out. My partner said total time was 90 mins. The actual procedure took less than 10 mins according to my paperwork. Sorry for the long review but I thought it was necessary. My entire surgical team was great. Shout out to all the filipina nurses who made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in to when I left. And my surgeon and anesthesiologist made me feel safe in their competent hands. I know most of us don't have a choice to where our GPs recommend us but I would 100% get another procedure done at surgicare. Finally, if you're getting older, get your colonoscopy screening done. It's totally not a big deal and could save your life.

I'm so sad to have to write this review. Surgicare was great with my actual care. Everyone was…read moreprofessional, competent, and I felt safe and cared for. However, the failure of their billing management and apathy towards fixing their own mistake is unacceptable. My procedure was preventative and 100% covered under my insurance with no out of pocket expense for myself. I had the procedure in February 2025 and Surgicare's billing coded it incorrectly as diagnostic instead of preventative. I received a $300+ bill and had to call and email Surgicare and their third party biller for almost a year before they fixed it. Surgicare would just tell me to call their biller and did not seem to care at all. I called both Surgicare and their biller at least two or three times a month for 9 months, just getting "we're working on it". I had to call HMSA after every follow up to find out what was really happening and that it just kept being billed incorrectly. This went on for 9 months. I only received help when I guessed the emails of the third party biller's executives. I finally received a confirmation that I no longer had the balance due near the end of November 2025. 9 months is a ridiculous timeframe for a simple correction. Surigcare did waive the residual tax fee for me but I don't think that makes up for their utter disregard for the situation. Surgicare's complete apathy to an error on their side has been extremely unprofessional and infuriating, I felt I had to write this especially for others. For someone else with less time, less experience with advocating for themselves, those that don't speak English well, or are on a fixed budget, this NINE month long experience would be intensely stressful and unacceptable.

Lol sometimes it seems that I'd go in say hi have a sit for couple seconds then they'll call me right in... feels like I'm a VIP when I'm the only person there lol. He's a great doctor to get a general understanding of your body and issues... but he'll refer you to a specialty doctor for any ailments that you have to properly take care of it and assist you with that, so don't expect him to take care of ALL of your problems and issues... but he'll do his best to care of things that he's able. His office looks humbling... nothing fancy or expensive looking very low key lol.

After x-rays and an MRI, took some time for worker's comp to approve this procedure and the day finally came. Was given explicit instructions prior to this day and after following them, I checked in at Minimally Invasive Surgery Hawai'i (MIS), which is located on the 6F of Hale Pawa'a. MIS is state of the art surgery center which has a team of professionals who perform orthopedic, musculoskeletal care and spine care procedures. I've never experienced this before and didn't know what to expect so I found myself asking my sister, who has 30yrs experience as a registered nurse, with questions. My concerns were alleviated as I believed in professionals and their knowledge and expertise. I was informed by the office of Dr. Darryl Kan and complied with the instructions provided to me. Upon check in I had my RN sister accompany me just in case I needed clarification and to ensure a smooth process. To be frank I was somewhat concerned as there was not one other patient in the check in area. It was just my sister, myself and the staff behind the counter. I was escorted to the back where I changed into a gown and received instructions as well as the attending professional reiterated today's procedure. Once again, nerve block was explained in simpler terms where I understood. It scared me but once again I had to trust the process. When it was my turn, I was rolled into the operating room where Dr. Kan greeted me in an upbeat manner and briefed me on what's to come. This was done over 8 months ago so I don't recall what happened after except finally waking up to some noise. The nurse (?) greeted and checked up on me. I was a little groggy and she must have read my mind as I was thirsty and hungry. I was offered an array of drinks and some snacks to choose from. When I was post groggy stage, the staff called my brother in law as he was designated to pick me up as I'm not allowed to drive after my procedure. I remember presented with non-slip socks and escorted to the 1F via wheelchair. Overall, I am very pleased and satisfied with MIS as they walked me through this process that was nerve-racking from the get go. From Dr. Kan, his staff and the staff at MIS, I was treated with great care and professionalism.

My journey with painful and swollen knees after running, jogging, hiking, aerobics classes, playing…read moreracquetball, and golfing began over fifteen years ago. Still, I stubbornly, or should I say "stupidly," held out for a year before making an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon my PCP referred me to, Dr. Jay Marumoto, at Queens Medical Center. After a physical examination and imaging (X-rays and MRI) tests, it was determined that I was suffering from bilateral knee osteoarthritis and torn meniscuses. After receiving the diagnosis, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about having the surgeries performed on separate dates. Still, I chose to have both knee meniscus repairs done in one visit at the medical center's Same Day Surgery Clinic. At my follow-up, I was recovering quickly with a great range of motion and experienced minimal pain. Still, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about the osteoarthritic progression and said, "See you in about 15 years." Thirteen years had passed when I requested to see Dr. Marumoto last August, because more pain and stiffness had returned to my right knee. Still, I decided to get knee strengthening physical therapy before our May 2025 trip to Japan and Korea, before deciding on a total knee replacement. The right knee strengthening sessions went well. However, on the second day of our trip, I exacerbated my situation when I tripped on a curb and fell onto my "less affected" left knee and face-planted. Luckily, I didn't need hospitalization or emergency medical attention, so I nursed myself for the rest of our 21-day cruise with affirming thoughts of scheduling a knee replacement on my right knee after returning home from our trip. When I confirmed my desire for the total knee replacement, Dr. Marumoto suggested that instead of having the surgery done at the hospital where there is more potential for nosocomial infection, he recommended performing the Outpatient surgical procedure at Minimally Invasive Surgery of Hawai'i (MIS). MIS is located on the 6th Floor in the Hale Pawa'a Building at the corner of South Beretania and Ke'eaumoku Streets. My husband accompanied me to my 8 am check-in, where we met the friendly and cheerful receptionist, Nadine. I like the electronic check-in process and completed it within a few seconds before sitting with Nadine to confirm my identification, medical insurance coverage, HIPAA protections, and estate plans. The waiting room was chilly, but I didn't mind since I brought a light sweater and wore warm, comfortable clothes. As the morning sun brightened and warmed the clean waiting room, I cuddled in a corner and caught up on reading e-mails. Soon, John, a smiling and welcoming nurse dressed in bright red scrubs, called me to enter the pre-operative holding unit/recovery room, where he took my vitals. Another nurse, Ameika (sp?), confirmed my name, birthday, surgeon's name, and scheduled procedure while settling me into a holding area with a warm and comfy bed. Ameika set me up with IV fluids and let me relax in bed with privacy drapes drawn. I also met with the OR nurse, Jackson, and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Louis Chun. Before discussing any information, each person confirmed my name, birthday, and surgical procedure. Of course, Dr. Marumoto popped in for a few moments to greet me and, I guess, to check on my state of mind since I was excited to get this procedure done. I last remembered being transported into the surgical suite. After a restful sleep, I awoke hungry and thirsty in the recovery room. Ameika informed me that they had contacted my husband to pick me up, and she got me ready to be wheeled downstairs to the porte cochère. Before leaving the recovery room, she provided me with an Ice Man Clear Cold Therapy Unit, although I had prepared reusable ice packs or wraps at home because we don't keep ice cubes. Thanks to the comfortable, clean, well-staffed, and knowledgeable medical and nursing staff, I'm on my way to a positive outcome. Also, because I had such a wonderful experience, I'm looking forward to having my other knee replaced next year, after another planned trip abroad.
