As a former martial artist (Judo/Tae Kwon Do/Karate/Hapkido) for many many years in my younger days, I am very impressed with this place! I searched many places in West Los Angeles and found Double Dragon Tae Kwon Do (DDTKD) a great fit for my boys. Grandmaster Kim, Master Sun, Master Kenny, Master Kevin and Instructor Alison are patient, thoughtful, good-humored and supportive with the adults, teens, and children. It's not just an activity for my boys but the life lessons and values taught. They don't hand out belts like other places. You earn the belts with the understanding of Tae Kwon Do philosophy, discipline, respect for others and self-respect. I feel so lucky to have found a place with such balance for my kids. Makes me proud to see my young boys enjoy and are focused in class. The Masters, Instructors, and Black Belts are equally impressive, kind, and caring. While having so many years of experience, and such impressive belt ranks, could theoretically lead some people to become impatient and condescending towards beginners, I have never experienced that in my time at the school - instead, everyone has showed a genuine enthusiasm for teaching, and a willingness to help people grow. Whether it's answering a quick question that comes up before class, taking the time to show you proper form during class, or staying later to give you pointers after class, everyone I've come across so far has seemed really happy to help out. The worst. Don't send your kids here. The man doesn't let anybody talk. Keeps interrupting, continuously. He only likes the sound of his own voice and doesn't want anybody else to talk. It's a nightmare. I would never let someone like that train my kids or me. Very toxic. I confess that I am not very knowledgeable about martial arts - but my daughter wanted to try it, and she absolutely loves it! I watch every class (I love that I'm allowed to stay) and I am always impressed by the Masters' patience and love of teaching (especially Master Kenny and Master Kevin). They know each child by name, even after the first lesson. Their feedback is constructive, specific, and respectful, and builds confidence in the students. I see my daughter getting plenty of one-on-one attention, which is why she's improving, learning quickly, and gaining focus. I was initially worried about the cost of each belt exam (very expensive if they don't pass?!) but the Masters are watching them carefully, and only allow qualified students to take the exam. Even once they qualify, the students are reminded that they must practice daily to stay on top of their skills. Such a valuable lesson for life! I recommend DDTKD highly! read more

Sure, I looked good, but it's the small details that make a big difference in TKD - whether it be forms, kicking or sparring. My eight year old attends classes here and we couldn't be happier. I've seen kids as young as four, but there are adult classes as well. The dojo is a little small and the observation area is very tiny and often standing room only. There isn't a better school in LA for the money. Definitely 5 stars. read more

A big part of the person I am today and the philosophy that I continue to strive to live for has manifested from the moment I started working and training at Double Dragon Tae Kwon Do back in 2005. Words can't describe the amount of support and teachings I had received from Grand Master Hyun Kim and fellow Master/Senior Instructors that were present at that time. I never knew that taking a small part-time office position would allow me to challenge myself both physically and mentally in the discipline of Tae Kwon Do and other types of Martial Arts to come, which has instilled within me the discipline of hard work, consistency and perseverance which I follow each and every day in my adult life. These tenets are not something a person really thinks about on a day to day basis, but it wasn't until I devoted myself to the training under Grand Master Hyun Kim that I've hard coded them into my day to day life. Long story short, I've worked at Double Dragon for nearly 4 years as an office manager and as a student under Grand Master Kim. Day in and day out, I've stayed after work to train during the adult classes and eventually obtained my Black Belt in 2008. It wasn't easy, but Grand Master Kim and the fellow Master instructors help me overcome my physical and mental short comings knowing that one day I would be able to achieve any goals I've set for myself. Along the way, I've met many students and parents of all backgrounds who I thanked humbly for always encouraging me and for me to set a good example for their children and even themselves. Grand Master Hyun Kim and his fellow Instructors still live by the traditions of what Tae Kwon Do has to offer to any practitioner: discipline, humility, confidence, respect to name a few. There's not too many Martial Arts schools around these days where the basis of their foundations are rooted to these teachings and 1 unique style. Even though the techniques are traditional, Grand Master Hyun Kim and fellow Instructors will continue to evolve their technique as see fit set by the World Taekwondo Federation. Any practitioner child or a adult who comes in with an open mind and is willing to learn will gain more than what they first started with. Yes, as a student advances in rank, the techniques do get more challenging and the expectations do get raised. Most people think of students start taekwondo early in life, but I'm here to tell you that starting as an adult is wonderfully rewarding. In my current job, I don't get much praise and I often cannot see the impact of my work. At Double Dragon, I actively see improvement every class. Grand Master Kim, Master Sun, and Master Kenny work you hard, but fairly, teaching you discipline, respect, and techniques by building you up one class at a time. Nothing will improve your confidence, push away the 9-5 blues, or be as fun as this class and the people in it! The relationships built with the masters and your fellow students are carved out of hard work, dedication, and incredibly positive attitudes. It might seem intimidating, but after each class I come away renewed, re-energized, and feeling powerful. I highly encourage anyone to go three times a week. My five year old son has attended Double Dragon Tae Kwon Do for the past six months or so. He absolutly loves it and refuses to ever miss a class. I started him at Double Dragon because he was having discipline problems in school, he even got suspended for hitting another child. I know, it doesn't seem like teaching him the art of kicking and punching would be the right thing to do for a child who's already in trouble for hitting. But what he needed was actually a little confidence, discipline and to learn respect. Plus, he gets to work out all his excess energy in the do-jang and not at school. His teacher at school can't believe the difference. His behavior is better at home as well. He is working very hard to make his way up the belts and hopes to be a member of the Double Dragon team for a long time. read more

I really like this place. My son loves it and the whole staff is warm and friendly. The owner is also a great guy who will go above and beyond to make sure all customers are treated well. I wish the price was a little bit cheaper but it's very reasonable for the location. The owner will also work with you if you are not able to pay in full at the time of sign up. The Taekwondo teachers can be a bit tough but I think that comes with the territory. A few instructors can learn a bit more about how to deal with little toddlers. In addition to the positive comments posted here, I would like to mention some of our experience with Double Dragon. Having transferred from an after-school-Tae Kwon do class, my son had a hard time catching up with the class including Korean terminology, and basic skills. Grand Master Kim and instructors noticed my son's struggle and taught him with step by step patiently. Also a friendly gesture from another student in the same class showing the correct forms was supportive. Soon he became hooked on Tae Kwon Do. All the support from Master Kim, the instructors, fellow students as well as parents, which were appreciated very much,made my son's technique and attitude improve tremendously. Here, you feel very supportive and friendly sense of community. Besides from Master Kim, we received encouragement and helpful tips for the tests and competitions from other parents.You can see the tradition for senior belts to support younger belts have been passed on. When you have concerns, Grand Master Kim, Master instructors,and the office lady are available to answer your questions. It is great asset for the school to have such dedicated and passionate masters including a 5th degree-female master. One of the great things about here is Grand Master acknowledges the students' effort which is very encouraging. He emphasizes the importance of humbleness and putting the effort always.We believe at Double Dragon your children are improving not only the technique also as life-long skills as wonderful humans. I have been training under Master Kim and his amazing instructors since 2008. I started as an adult in my late 30s, with no martial arts experience, and have always received the best level of instruction and attention that I've ever needed to succeed. I have more confidence, and am in much better shape than I was before I began training. One of the things I love most is that each training session is unique, dynamic, and tailored to what students need. My daughter has attended double dragon for over a year. Very dedicated went twice A week and advanced quickly. I have seen them break boards for kids in testing just so they could collect their money. Masters are rude and just worry about you renewing the contract. It's all about money for them. My daughter was injured and when we went back they didn't even give a proper greeting the first thing they said was go to the office and pay for a year if you want to stay. I took my daughter out and enrolling in a better school. I spoke to quite a few parents and they feel the same way that the "Masters" are quite cold and even turns to rudeness. They really don't teach the kids they are nice in the beginning then their true colors show. Don't let the 5 stars fool you they have had fewer stars and now it doesn't show. Really I hadn't said a word till now but when they got nasty I felt it was necessary to advise people that their are better schools take it from a mom who was mistreated for no reason. They are pushy in sales and don't focus on technique they just wanted testing every 2 months because it's tons of income for them. Unless it's an apology I advise the school not to respond with any lies because everything written here took place and there's even more that I don't have time to share Master Kenny should go back to the books and read about greeting parents and being nice to the kids but he has a lot of growing up and learning to do himself read more

Instructor Chris is great and HILARIOUS - he keeps both kids and parents laughing. All instructors are excellent and very professional. My two boys couldn't be happier (me too!). Exercise level is well balanced with the teaching of self discipline and respect. They are extra patient and encouraging. I love their positive attitude. My son attends DDTWD and he likes it. However, I'm a little tired of the same kids getting recognized at the awards and belt ceremony. My child works every bit as hard, learns the required information and performs well but is not recognized. Before you say I'm a protective mom who has an exaggerated opinion of my child please know that the same child has received the largest trophy at the last several awards ceremonies. Also, the awards are for broad categories such as most confident, most improved, etc. I am not asking for special treatment or an award where one is not earned, I'm just saying I think the process for choosing the winners is not based on anything other than who the owner likes and maybe whose parents spend the most $$. read more

I have a 6 year old who has been at the DDTKD for over a year and he loves it. He's a shy boy and DDKTD has really help him come out his shell, it worked wonders for his confidence. The instructors are fun but firm with the kids, personally I would like to see them be more strict but I appreciate that there is a balancing act between discipline and fun (to keep the kids really interested) and they strike a good balance. Our two boys, ages 8 1/2 and 6, have been students here for about 3 months. We were coming from a different studio, having left after feeling disappointed with how things were run there. Our kids are completely obsessed and so happy at Double Dragon. The teachers are all so engaged with the kids, instilling fun and confidence as much as teaching skills and form. Master Kim is always there, and works with our kids from time to time. Which is nothing short of thrilling to my boys to learn from the Grand Master. I also like the warm ups and stretching they do for the first 20 minutes of class. Both of our boys have had occupational therapy at different phases in their lives and the exercises are all so good for active children like mine. The sticker incentive system is such a positive motivator and can be redeemed for patches for their uniforms and other TKD-related prizes. It's been great for my kids to see their skills progress, and also see how their hard work can translate into an incentive that is not quick to attain. The teachers have been with the studio for years which gives the studio a sense of community. I get the sense from other kids in my sons' classes, that they are as obsessed as my kids are. On the business end, I think Master Kim strives to keep his costs low and keep his tuitions as reasonable as possible for families. I also feel that he cares more about kids loving TKD and staying the course to see them through the entire process of white to black belt more than anything else. While our kids are in class, he is always out in the studio chatting with parents, which I love. Our other studio didn't have that feeling to it, as that studio's Master never worked with the beginning class and came off more like a business man rather than a studio Master/teacher. The schedule works for us, as there is a class offered 6 days a week for us to pick 3. They do not require you to commit to a time/day of the week so that flexibility is wonderful for us. We plan to follow our kids' leads and take it all the way as long as that continues to be what they want. Master Kim has begun to explain to us the different options that we can commit to (that can wait until our kids are ready) so I'm not sure about Norma L.'s review of feeling like a contract was shoved down her throat. They are straight and narrow about that and want you to commit for your child's sake. It is a bit of all or nothing in that once you're past a certain belt level, it's not worth it for anyone involved to do anything less than what they ask. But being in the early stages ourselves, I don't feel an ounce of pressure to do anything other than 1) what our kids want, and 2) what works for us. All teachers are black belt and have been with the studio for years. There seems to be very little turn around in the staff, and the student black-belt volunteers have been with the studio since they were my kids' ages.
