However, the people who handle the back end billing and administration of the company are terrible and what have caused me to provide a negative review. I signed up my son for Jiujitsu at Level Up Jiujitsu in Culver City on June 15th, after doing a 1-week trial classes with them. After 2 months, it was clear that this type of martial arts was not suitable for my son as he began to not pay attention and not listen to the instructor. We were going 2x a week and I informed the instructor, Angie, that I was not going to continue for August. Mind you, I was told that I could cancel at any time and I never signed a binding contract that said I was locked in for a certain period of time. Angie also told me that it should not be a problem to cancel, and to just inform the admin by sending an email before the next billing cycle. I called the information number first and left a couple of messages, but nobody returned my calls. I, then, sent an email on August 11th saying that I would like to cancel my membership for my son and provided the rationale. The administrator finally sent me an email on August 16th saying that my membership was canceled. Mind you, they charged my card on August 15th which is the next billing cycle that my son would not be attending. I responded to that email inquiring why they would do that given that I have every right to cancel and that I did so prior to the next billing cycle. They never responded. Since then, they have charged me each month and I have reached out to cancel again and have the charge reversed, but I have not received any response. Stay away from Level Up Jiujitsu unless you want to continue to be charged even after you cancel your membership!

During that call, I was told there was a 4-week introductory program for $149, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. I was also told that after the introductory period, membership would be $257 per month, with a discounted rate available if I signed up early. Based on that information, I was excited to get started. I confirmed my email, completed the registration process, signed the waiver, and booked what was advertised on the website as a free trial. When I arrived for class, I was informed that free trials were no longer offered and that the $149 introductory program was no longer available. This was surprising given that only about 10 days had passed since I had called to confirm everything. I asked whether I could simply pay for a drop-in fundamentals class since I was already there and on time, but I was told that drop-ins were only available to students with prior experience. As a brand-new student, my only option was to sign up for the full $257 monthly membership. That was the most frustrating part. The lower-cost introductory option was gone, the free trial was gone, and I wasn't allowed to pay for a single class to see if the gym was a good fit. Instead, the only option available was to commit to a full month for $257 without ever having taken a class there. That's a significant commitment for someone trying a new gym for the first time. It's unfortunate because the facility seems to have a great community and many satisfied members. However, having the terms change so quickly after I confirmed them, combined with having no way to try a class before committing to a full membership, left me with a very negative first impression.
