By far the best experience I have ever had, From the time we arrived to the time we left the staff was amazing... I initially advised Margo that I was going to propose to my now fiancé somewhere along the ride and well Marg and Laura Definitely help me out and made it perfect... The horses are great, staff is amazing and we had zero issues the day was legit perfect.... I'll have ridden horses before but my now fiancé has never been on one. They made sure to pick out the right horse for her and for a beginner she actually took control the horse and did not let it take control of her. People have to remember that horses are animals and that none are perfect, so whoever is reading this definitely plan a trip out there , enjoy the outdoors and have a good time :-) read more

The poor lady who answered the phone was friendly and indicated Double Mountain incorrectly listed her number for reservations. Marchesi is our fave, so we're always happy to go threre, and we'd never been to Cathedral Ridge, which we also enjoyed. The horses are happy to trot and very well behaved. I'm sure the experience is great if you get the chance. My wife arranged with Margo for a ride for me and my kids. Margo and my wife had a great connection over the phone and she felt this was going to be a great time for us all. Margo agreed to match a Groupon deal and my future daughter-in-law even took the day off work so she could join us. Apparently in the last week and a half they got someone to buy a full price ride during our time slot because when my wife called to confirm Margo couldn't be available but Catherine (sp?) told her we were no longer booked but could have an 8am slot instead of the 11am slot we booked. Good businesses honor agreements and don't renege on them. If you want to guarantee your experience I recommend finding a more reputable organization. read more

I've ridden at Double Mountain once before and had a great experience but this second time really had me worried for both the horses and the riders. We rode the entire time on the road where I looked down multiple times and saw broken glass that the horses were stepping on. People in our group were not given any instruction on how to even stop a horse or turn its head. Sounds basic, but for beginners this is critical. Had one of our riders' horses spook and take off to the barn and Margo didn't even notice and this poor woman had never been on a horse before and it was rearing and kicking and she was terrified. People on the road were honking at us and some racing by. We had a pilot car but it was annoying to hear it the whole time and not just the soft breeze of the mountains. Multiple people just got on horses with no helmet and no waiver signed. Yes you can opt out of a helmet, but for someone who has never been on a horse and doesn't understand how things we don't see as humans can spook them, this is dangerous. No doubt Margo and her crew love what they do. It pains me to have to write this, but this is safety for animals and humans alike. read more

This was an experience of a lifetime. We got referred to Double Mountain through Skamania Lodge and I couldn't be happier that we did. It's so obvious that Margo is passionate about what she does and that these horses are so loved and taken care of. I've been riding horses for almost 20 years but my husband has been in the saddle probably 2 or 3 times. We BOTH felt extremely safe and got matched with horses good for our skill levels. It was a great ride. When we arrived the horses were saddled and ready to go and after some quick instruction we were off. We made our way through the rural areas by Hood River to a trail that wound through the forest always gaining elevation as we rode. The trail eventually opened up to an area high above the Columbia Gorge that provide a fantastic panoramic view. We stopped for refreshments and photos before descending down the trial eventually ending where we started. The added benefit of the Columbia Gorge ride is that it start and ends at Cathedral Ridge Winery. So, after the trail ride we did a tasting and enjoyed a glass wine at the vineyard. Now ever adventure has it pluses and minuses. The pluses again are your riding horses through some very scenic areas of Oregon; the downside, at least with this small party of four, is that we tended to be spread apart and could not always hear what guide was saying. The ride was definitely worth doing and I hope to be a repeat customer. read more

My children had a harrowing, traumatic experience yesterday at Double Mountain Horse Ranch. I urge you not to let your children near this place, which is a safety hazard for small children, as the staff do not appear to understand or implement basic protocols for working with horses and kids. Here's our story, which resulted in my children screaming hysterically as we were leaving the ranch. My daughters, 7 and 5, and I have been around horses multiple times throughout our lives. We aren't expert riders, and my kids are young, but they are learning and have been on horses several times. We made reservations for a 90 minute horseback riding trip, which given my children's ages was of course going to be fairly steady and basic. We got there, and they put my five-year old daughter on a horse that they said was the calmest one. I held on to the lead for a while and so did a staff member. However, at some point, the staff member let go and the horse -- I wouldn't say it bucked, but it started running in the pen and my daughter was sort of shaken off the horse. At that point I thought: "Okay, she's upset but fine, and the important lesson here is to get back on the horse." For sure, I wanted to make sure the horse was okay and that this really was an appropriate horse for a five-year old. I asked the staff member to please make sure this doesn't happen again (let's not let go of the lead, especially if there's any question!), asked if this horse had a history of this, asked if this really as an appropriate horse, and we worked to calm my crying five-year old down and put her on the horse. It took a few minutes, but we got her back on. I held the lead for a few minutes, and then gave it back to staff member. I got up on my horse. A few seconds later, that same horse, with my five year old on it, bolted out of the pen and started galloping fairly quickly away from the pen over the hill, uncontrolled. My five-year old, to her credit, knew enough to hang on tight and hung on for a little while. But she's five. She was thrown off the horse onto rocks, face first. I of course ran over and picked her up. She was fine, but pretty scraped up on her face. Thankfully. It could have turn out differently. Of course, she was screaming hysterically. At this point, my five-year old's trust in horses has been destroyed. My seven-year old daughter was screaming, having seen her sister thrown off a horse that we had been assured was great for kids. I took both kids and left. The point here is not that I think horses are always predictable. If that had been my horse, I would have known how to handle it fine. It might have been okay for a teenager. But the staff knew my kids' ages and riding levels. At a ranch, you should know your horses, and you should also fully understand basic safety protocols, especially when kids are involved. One of these is understanding when to hold the lead and when not to. And, having horses on staff that you are confident are appropriate for age levels, not just guessing as to which horse might be best (which in retrospect is what it seemed happened). Double Mountain Horse Ranch needs a few things. First, an inspection from whatever agency regulates it, as to its training and safety protocols. Second, it needs to examine its training and staff expectations. Third, it needs to evaluate if it's going to serve kids: if it's simply not set up, given its horse population, to serve people younger than, say, 14, then that's fine, but it needs to carefully evaluate whether it's appropriate to serve a younger population. And fourth, if it's not going to take basic steps to train its staff on basic safety protocols and protect children, the business should be shut down. What happened is inexcusable. My daughters' physical health, at this point, thankfully appears to be okay. But it was a traumatic experience for both fo them, and trust in horses and ranches will take longer to come back. Our trust in this business certainly never will. read more

Do yourself a favor. Get out of the house and ride a horse for an afternoon. Margo will set you up with gear and teach you how to do all the basics. She knows all of her horse's quirks, so when you come up to a patch of gravel, she'll give you helpful hints on how to direct your horse if its averse to that, or something else. This was super helpful to all us beginners. She empowered our 10 year old to overcome the initial fear and she was riding like a pro by the end. Everything had a very personal touch. We showed up in the middle of January totally unprepared for the cold Gorge weather, but she provided us with warm socks, boots, and jackets. We had a blast. She took us to a rocky creek where we had lunch, and made sure to get us a great group picture. We will try and make this an annual trip, or more often if we can. Highly recommend. read more

Where do I even start? Margo and her crew Cathy and Maria were amazing! We booked this horse riding adventure for a group of girls for a bachelorette weekend. We were not disappointed! Margo has such a wild personality and we had an absolute blast with her. When we arrived we got to pick out some cowgirl boots and a hat and then off to choose our horse! Some of us had ridden before and we had one first timer. The horses were all friendly and fun to ride. Margo took us on a guided tour through some orchards and down to the river where we tied our horses up and snapped some photos. We all can't wait to come back and do it all over again. We had a great ride with Double Mountain, doing the Above the Columbia ride with my 11-year-old niece visiting from out of town. The thing she most wanted to do was ride a horse, and she was over the moon happy with the experience. It's hard to describe one of the best days of my life but it was here. We rode through dusk, past the smell of blossomed cherry trees and vineyards to a rushing creek and chugged wine and felt amazing. The horses are chill and they make it so easy. Did the sunset ride last night. We made a reservation late in the day and Margot was able to accommodate my family of four. My kids had never been on horses and I was a bit nervous. Margot put us all at ease and the boys had the time of their lives. The ride was gorgeous through the orchards and down to the river. She got the boys involved with the campfire and making of the Smore's and taught them a few things about the orchards as well. Margot is very down to earth and I like that she gives the kids a bit of responsibility with the horses. She makes them do a few things on their own like un tie their packs, unhook their reins ... etc , etc,.. it is not a fancy place but you will make wonderful family memories if you go on a ride with Margot.. read more

My wife and I often choose to hire an outfit to go horseback riding when we go on vacation. It's a great way to see the area and we both enjoy horses. We usually don't expect anything more than a mellow walk to some location and a halfway decent horse who just stays the path. Margo, who runs Double Mountain Ranch ensures that your experience is so much more! Her horses are very well cared for and well trained. She is not afraid to let you get the horse to canter, trot, or gallop. She paid attention to her customers and made sure we didn't do anthing we were comfortable with but she was otherwise open to whatever we wanted to do. We went in November and we went with two other people. It was a small group. We went through a Pear orchard after the trees were picked but there were still lots on the tree's. We were allowed to try so many different flavors of pears. They were also fun to pick from the horses. Then we went down to Hood River and got the horses feet wet. She said if the river was lower we would have crossed and made a loop. Then coming up from the river we did an incredible gallop up the hill (if we chose to) and I never had so much fun on a horse. By all means Margo knows how to show her customers a good time. If you go to Hood River make sure you look her up. She is a wonderful person who demonstrates a loving and sharing character who appears to do so much for her community. My first trip to Hood this past week for some kiting and wanted to do something special with the wifey during our week long stay. Spoke with Margo a few days before our arrival to inquire about the experience and we immediately hit it off. The trail ride we selected took us into the woods with a fair amount of elevation change. Margo guided our way through the winding switchbacks and kept a watchful eye on us as we negotiated our way under fallen trees and branches. We crossed several brooks and jogged our horses up some terrain. At one point we were lead into an open area within the forest. Looking up into the canopy the sun shone through in patches and all you could hear was the wind blowing through. It's one thing to see the beautiful greenery as you're driving on the highway and it's a whole other experience to be in it; way up in the mountains looking down into the Columbia Gorge. It was the highlight of our trip and we can't wait to go back! read more

This was one of the very few places where I got an automatic private ride without any reservations and got to canter a tall long legged red quarter horse named blaze and he ran like a racehorse but at a canter, not a gallop. Margo did talk a lot, but she and her daughter were nice and never questioned why I needed to wear a bandana. I hate it when other ranches do that to me. Blaze was at least 16 hands and just the right temperament for me, though i probably will never get to come back there again, but I did love the place. Margo was my match talking wise. My family of 4 is inexperienced with riding horses so we chose the "fruit loop" ride. You couldn't ask for a better setting - Hood River is one of the most beautiful places in the country. As for the service; Renee helped get the horses ready for us. She did a fantastic job matching horses to each rider. Margo is top-notch! She knows the area very well and has a lot of knowledge about the landscape, the farming process in the orchards and the wildlife. After a 2-hour ride; she made a lifetime of impact on my 7 and 8 year old girls. This ride was a huge confidence booster for both of them. I volunteered/rode/contributed here for a few days on my way through town, and I have to say as a rider that this is one of the best vibes I've felt being on a ranch. Margo and her staff/wranglers are kind, open to their clients' needs and preferences, patient, and a pleasure to ride with. They really make you feel safe and let you own your experience, from tacking up to the ride itself. And the area is NOT to be missed...some really beautiful rides.
