Jalapeño/cheddar smoked sausage. Beef rib. Beef cheeks (special).
    Stacey L.

The best bbq in the PNW. We rarely have the opportunity to get their bbq since their foot truck is primarily base in Hood River, but when Grasslands comes to town (downtown Portland), then you drop your plans and get in line! It's worth every dollar....EVERY.DAMN.TIME!! Today we got the beef cheeks (deliciously tender and fatty), 2 types of smoked sausages, pork burnt ends, the BEEF RIB (to die for), and for sides we got Mac n cheese, and the brisket birria baked beans. About $120 all in. Nice being able to grab a few beers while we waited in line at Ruse Brewing. The food, grasslands bbq community, and the good vibes are really something special and worth the wait. We are blessed in the NW. 10/10 I'd recommend them to anyone visiting Oregon.

I was taking out of town visitor to the gorge and we stopped for lunch in Hood River. They had some kind of kite flying thing on the big field across and I noticed that this food cart has the LONGEST line out of 3 -- well, the other 2 didn't even have a line. So of course, we had to get in the line too! The brisket was the BEST! You can tell just from looking at it, it was juicy and melt in your mouth. The sausage was also excellent. Oh yeah, so are the pork belly burnt ends. The other reviewers were raving about the coleslaw, but while I gave it kudos for being different, we weren't blown away (it's by no means bad). If you have time to wait in line, definitely do, it'll be worth your while.

HOLY HELL THIS PLACE IS GOOD!!! This gem of a food cart is located not too far from the shoreline and my god is it worth the wait. So they do have specials depending on the day, since we went Sunday they had tri tip and god it was so juicy and delicious I would've gone back for more. Service was fairly quick but they super friendly and helpful. If you have trouble with the seating fear not because you can take it to the second floor of the building next door. Overall this place is a MUST when in hood river.

    Tri Tip sandwich, $16

Excellent sandwich. I visited on Memorial Day and they were open for business. I got the Tri Tip sandwich ($16) topped with chimichurri sauce, pickled onions, and a few greens on a nice brioche bun. I waited in line for a few minutes and it took a few minutes to get my order. The meat, toppings, and bun were all delicious, well cooked, good proportions, and worked well together. It was enough for one person but you might want to get a side. The food truck is located at a park that's mostly open grass, but with a few tables and a few trees for shade. Pair your sandwich with a $3.5 beer from the Ferment Beer Bike a few steps away.

Order of brisket (so tender) and smoked chicken sandwich. I take my food to nearby Stoked Roasters to get an iced latte.

Whenever I'm at the Hood River Waterfront area, I make time to get some BBQ from Grasslands and its food truck. They also have great meat options and sides, and always friendly guys at the window. While it's great getting BBQ meats like the brisket at half pound servings, I also really enjoy the smoked chicken sandwich. The chicken is so tender and has a slick feel from the smoking, almost like a cured meat. Then the aioli and greens that come in the bun puts the whole thing together into a delicious bite. The wait can be long depending on the weather and if it's a Saturday, for example. Some people line up before they open at 11:30 a.m. and so the wait can be an hour. But again, great service and everyone waiting is excited for some good BBQ so everyone's in a good mood, especially when the weather is nice. This truck has gotten national attention, so people are driving far to check them out. I hate to keep adding to fuel to the buzz but it is really worth it.

Grasslands Barbecue is probably. . . definitely one of my favorite bbq joint in the North West. The only bummer and one of the greatest features that it is outside in a food truck. So your experience can vary based on if it's cold or raining which it was in the case when I went. And this would be true if it wasn't located in this perfect magical location. The view of the hood river and walking around the area before opening was breathtaking. I felt like Big foot himself could have come up to me and i would have invited him to share a plate. The drive out to Hood River from Portland was also magical. Anyway back to the food. I got some brisket slices off the flat and point and it was heavenly. Some of the most moist lean slices brisket l've had in a while. On top of the bark was set nice, hard, and crunchy. Fav bark of the year. The pork belly burnt ends has had a yuzu and teriyaki flavor and who doesn't like green onions both for flavor and garnish. This too was nice a crispy on the outside, moist and delicious on the inside. The pulled pork that I got also had the taste of smoke in every bite with a mix of crispy bard and the fatty parts that kept it moist. It was as if I had every part of the pork butt in every bite. The special of the day was a bacon rib that was a first for me but the first of many. Now if I see it on the menu it might be something I order every time. I liked the most about Grasslands is the contrast of textures in every meat and bite.

Line outside Holy Mountain Brewery in Seattle for pop up event 3/15/2025.

So dang good! I've only been to their pop ups here in Seattle where they serve up smokey goodness behind Holy Mountain Brewery and the train tracks. The line is always exceptionally long and they frequently run out of stuff! Each day they will have a special like beef brisket or tri tip. I have yet to try their beef brisket which seems by all accounts to be amazing but I never get their early enough before they run out. The stand out meat item they have each day in my opinion is the pork belly burnt ends! They put an Asian inspired spin to it with I think some soy sauce and sesame! It is unique and melt in your mouth delicious. I have also partaken in the tri tip which topped with a chimichurri sauce which is tender and amazing. Really, all the meats I've had were delicious. Even the chicken is good?! Who gets chicken at a BBQ place?? Anyhow, if they end up at a pop up near you, get there EARLY!

Hatch chili & cheddar sausage, burnt ends, pulled pork, mac & cheese

I'll lead with the punchline: this is the best barbecue I've had in the Pacific Northwest, hands down. The pork belly burnt ends were standouts - crispy on the edges and meltingly soft on the interior. Hatch chili and cheddar sausage was excellent and pulled pork was extraordinarily tender. The meats came with white bread and a nice selection of pickled vegetables to balance things out. And the mac and cheese was excellent. I don't usually go for mac and cheese, but it was a worthwhile impulse purchase. I went to their Seattle popup, so your experience may vary if you visit Grasslands BBQ in their usual Hood River stomping grounds. But I imagine the food would be even better on their home court. But as usual with good food these days, there is a cost. And while prices were surprisingly reasonable, you will have to wait a while in line. I showed up at 3 pm on a weekday, which I figured was as off-peak as it was gonna get. From the time I got there until I got my food was about 45 minutes. Also, items sell out. If you have your heart set on anything in particular, you will have to show up early and probably wait for hours to ensure that you get it. But if you're flexible, there seem to be no duds on this menu - anything you order will be good. I hope you enjoyed this review. I can't think of eating right now, but I know my next three meals are gonna be salads...

Mixed platter of burnt ends, brisket, hatch cheddar sausage. Plenty of pickles, onions and bread.

I e been to Grasslands 3 times now and they never disappoint. The brisket is super tender, the burnt ends are a good nugget of butter soft pork belly and their sausage (hatch cheddar) is by far the best I've ever had. Sides are unique and all very flavorful. Tex Mex slaw, Texas caviar, Mac n cheese. It's a splurge but so worth the drive out for a Saturday fun day in Hood River.

    Bella H.

My husband ordered so not completely sure of all the ingredients but it was all super delicious. There were no leftovers between the 2 of us for lunch. The Mac topping was spicy Cheetos and the sauce was a complex and creamy flavor, perfect side! The pork bits tasted like they were from heaven, would most definitely be part of my late meal. My husband said it was some of the best brisket he had ever had.

Get there early and make a day of it in Hood River. They have a great location near breweries on the waterfront. The food is worth the drive enough said. It is AMAZING and I will be back.

Cheddar sausage, tomato salad, burnt ends, pickles and white bread.

They took precautions to minimize cross-contact with gluten items, including wrapping the sandwich up separately and bringing it out to us first before bringing out our gluten containing items. The three in our group had mixed reviews on the food quality. I enjoyed my reuben very much. My partner and his mom thought their food was okay, and their portions were too small for the price. As far as the actual store goes, they carry a lot of what your typical natural foods store or food co-op would carry, though the prices seem more along the lines of what a Whole Foods would charge. For example, $3.50 for a single avocado. Considering that they are a small business in a somewhat touristy town, I guess that is a sound business decision. All in all, a good experience, just expect to pay a little more if you are going to shop or eat there!

The atmosphere is casual and inviting but the food, both quality and presentation, steals the show. We tried a gin cocktail that was as beautiful as it was inventive. We followed this with the brussel sprouts salad which was lightly roasted but still tasted and looked green in the most delightful way, with some kind of light dressing that celebrates the vegetables in the salad medley without overpowering them. We took Calvin's recommendation and ordered the special which was a three mushroom fettuccine: it was perfection. The pasta was served al dente, the mushrooms included shitake, hedgehog, and one other and all had a unique flavor that stood out with each bite. The pasta sauce was buttery but somehow almost effervescent, embracing but not suffocating, with just enough cheese to know it's there but not enough to have it overpower the dish. At this point we didn't think the meal could get any better but then we ordered the pear, huckleberry, and pluot sorbet made at Celilo and we're now committed to coming back. The sorbet featured locally sourced Bosc pears and that flavor may have been my favorite as it was unlike any other sorbet I have ever tasted. All were sweet but complex.
