I played on this field my junior year of HS back in 1991 & just visited it again this past Columbus Day weekend during a visit to the HOF. What a magical place, depicted in several films (A League of Their Own), it's a beautiful park that lets you watch league games for free walk-ups. A must visit for any baseball fan & just down Main Street from the historical Hall of Fame. Batter up! read more

Great old school feel to this field that many major named baseball players once played at. You can rent the field for games which is really cool but it does not have lights so day games only. Well maintained but the bathrooms could use a small tlc. Over all a great stop while in town read more

My Father's Day gift this year was a three day trip to Cooperstown - almost fifty and been a baseball fan since I was four and this was my first trip. One of the things I wanted to do was sit and watch some baseball at Doubleday Field and though the trip was amazing, the first two days it rained all day long...so no baseball. Today, the Baseball Gods saw fit to let the clouds disappear and the sun blast the field in its glory. Wifey and I sat down and watched two random U-15 teams from Ithaca and St. Louis warm up and play some ball. The result didn't matter, but the sounds of the balls slapping into leather and the crack of the bat was all I needed to make this trip complete. We watched for a few innings and then had to go, but it was great to see and hear the sounds again from that close. What an amazing three days... read more

If you're a fan of baseball and the movie "A League of their Own", then you need to visit Doubleday Field! In the 1992 film, this is the field that the former members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) played at during their reunion in Cooperstown at the beginning and very end of the movie. It still pretty much looks the same after all these years! Doubleday Field is walking distance from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, so I highly recommend checking out this field when you're visiting the Hall of Fame. When you visit this baseball field, it does feel like a time capsule, as they've tried to preserve it for the past 100 years; as this small stadium was built in 1920. If you can catch a game here, that would be great! Even if there isn't a game, you're still able to walk around this stadium and admire its looks & history. read more

This is a cool field/stadium. It is free to walk into and check out. It seems to have been well maintained with some old school seats. We were lucky and there was a game of some sort going on when we were there so we could watch a little of the game while taking a break from walking in town. There are a few stores right next to it that cater to the field but I liked the old look and nostalgia of it all. If you are in Cooperstown, you have to at least see this place. read more

Cooperstown and Doubleday how can you go wrong. I can't comment on how it actually is to see a game here as when we visited, it was quite. I love that the stadium is open for fans to take a look at all during the day. Old stadium that seems well kept up. The bleachers under cover are strange to me. Guess because they are designed as old. Large square box for sitting and a wood railing for your back. The foul lines seats beyond the infield have traditional bleachers but no cover. read more

I'm not one to watch baseball games that aren't publicized very much/well, but the part of the game I took a peak into today (because I really didn't know if it came with the price of the daily admission into the Hall of Fame nearby) was rather a success. Though you could tell that the sun was beating down on the people on the 1st base side bleachers, you could tell those who paid for admission for the grandstand behind home plate really had a nice cool spot, and while I knew I wasn't staying long (to just take a picture or two and/or get some experience in) with the game in progress, I was fascinated by what I was seeing. It didn't really take me much effort to get in. THe gates were open to the grandstand, as well as the 1st base bleachers (I couldn't tell quickly about the 3rd base bleachers), but it was more or less the effort of knowing just how much it would take to get in to see a non-Induction weekend game to know just how much was needed to see for an experience for Yelp. I wanted to get away many weeks before Induction weekend and had that chance today to go. The time was "just right". Seeing a bunch of high school or nearby college kids playing baseball on the field today, really makes me wonder the awe of the spectators on inauguration weekend (when I know for sure these seats are pay-only seats regardless). I can hardly believe they actually fit an accurate number on crowd-goers into the stands on Induction weekend without having standing-room only crowds (I've heard about a number of these years when standing room crowds had happened here for that weekend.) While the bleachers weren't filled at all for this game, the grandstand was a-quarter empty with some more coming in periodically! But be careful. Although there's a parking lot that's meant for Doubleday field, Doubleday field parking also constitutes a number of fine folks who feel the need to walk to get to the Hall of Fame or comparable Cooperstown baseball and souvenir shop businesses around the corner. Today, when I came into the parking lot (to get mainly to the Hall of Fame), I couldn't believe the response of parking lot space choices. With the exception of legal 1-2 spots down the one side, the rest of the lot was full. I liked that they only took credit card payments here (for ease of use and simplicity), but you could tell that some people just didn't feel the same way. There seems to be a non-affiliated Doubleday field lot that has a flat rate of $10, but I didn't want to go any further when I saw just how well this location is managed - price for time. There was no game when I initially got there, but you could tell the game was in-progress when I came back out to my car (one hour before the end time on my parking ticket which they want inside the Dashboard of the car you paid for) to drop my stuff and head back "home" a fair distance away (I came from Dutchess County - two hours/100 miles away.) The last time I was here before today, I never got to experience this field, but could tell there was excitement in the air and something I needed to go back and see one last time. I don't think I'll be back for the field, but it's quite potential that I could be back if I was looking to go to the Hall of Fame itself and came early enough. read more

There's nothing better than a classic, American ballpark. There have been far, far, far too many ballparks torn down to make room for glitzy, new stadiums. And as classic parks like Comiskey, Ebbets and Rosenblatt (former home of the CWS) disappear, so does a piece of Americana that can't be reclaimed. I suppose that's why Cooperstown is the way it is -- here to preserve that moment of magic you experienced as a kid at your first ball game, glove in hand and begging the players in the bullpen to throw you a ball up in the bleachers. Doubleday Field is a baseball stadium in Cooperstown, New York named for Abner Doubleday and located two village blocks away from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The grounds have been used for baseball since 1920, on what was Elihu Phinney's farm. It's crazy how long this field has actually been around. This is the actual place they say Abner Doubleday invented the game of baseball. But who knows We weren't there. However what I do know is Doubleday field is where the inductions to the Hall Of Fame take place. They also play actual baseball games here doing induction weekend. The field is one of the most historical places you could ever visit as an avid baseball fan like myself. So after your tour of the Hall Of Fame... Walk a couple blocks down the street and look in the back you'll see Doubleday Field! If you get hungry due to all the excitement Doubleday Cafe is near by! Check it out! This is a beautiful old field that is a nice throwback to vintage baseball. The field is usually open and is definitely a nice place to check out if your in town to see the museum. It is free to go in and walk around. They play an all star type game with retired players here every May. They also do an awards presentation during induction weekend in this stadium. read more

This was the first place we stopped in Cooperstown. Well, technically it was the city parking lot attached to it, but considering the 5 hour drive we'd just completed, I was sprinting for the bathrooms as soon as I got out of the car. Lucky for me, even though it was a rainy day with no game on the field, the bathrooms were open. They reminded me of the old school rest stop bathrooms in states that haven't made any improvements in 3 decades in terms of style and accessories, but they were clean, open, and free, so I thought they were awesome. The field itself is also always open. The grandstands are old school wood stands with lots of room. No field in America has seats that big any more. They've got some signs and plaques all around, though we didn't spend much time here since we were headed to the museum. read more

Supposedly the birthplace of baseball. If you are going to the museum, you may as well walk over here too. Once a year, a preseason MLB game is played here with current teams dressed in their retro outfits. I was lucky to see the Boston Red Sox against the Detroit TIgers. If no game is happening, you can walk in and check it out. Bring your camera. Maybe you'll have a Field of Dreams moment. read more

It's a lot of fun to stop in here during a game. It's also a little strange because apparently teams from all over the region rent the field to play each other. At any given time, any two teams from any location, at any skill level could be playing each other. The crowd is always neutral which is kind of nice. There doesn't seem to be much to see here if there isn't a game going on. It's a baseball field like many others, though I am not a huge baseball fan. read more
