Straight out…read moreof the Goodfellas, thick accent, wife beater, gold chains, etc. He has more money from his construction business than he knows what to do with. He's in his twilight years of working so these days he mostly spends his time making his own red wine from scratch, hunting turkeys, and growing vegetables in his garden. He clears the vibe check. I'm yapping now, but all this to say he picked Il Gatto E La Volpe for dinner so I knew this food was gonna SMACK. We started with margherita pizzas for the table, arrancini, calamari, and a couple bottles of red wine picked by Uncle Dan. My Mom got the gnocchi bolognese, which I knew I would get 80% of as she eats like a mouse, so I went with the Florentine steak. I hate to be corny and say "everything was sensational," but everything was sensational so Imma leave it at that. My favorites were the gnocchi bolognese and arrancini though, as I had never seen gnocchi bolognese on a menu. It honestly should be a more common dish. I'm making a prediction that by 2029, gnocchi bolognese will be a standard item on all Italian menus. Service was great, vibes were up, and this was just a great place to enjoy some much needed family time over some red wine. These haters got me stressed. SHOUTOUT TO UNCLE DAN! They had a high top bar and a few tables outside but seating is limited and I think they mostly do takeout. We got the Americano pizza which tasted great. Has small pepperonis, good amount of cheese and a nice chew to the crust. There was a slice or two that had a bit of a burnt crust. The second pizza we got was the spicy Nduja sausage with mushrooms and a sesame crust. It tasted good but I didn't find any sausage if there was some. Would probably not recommend ordering that. They mixed up our order as well and got the small mixed up with the large and had to recook them. So we waited another 10 to 15 mins. Kids liked the Ferrero Tiramisu but I thought it was just okay. Needed more Ferrero and hazelnut flavor imo. The garlic sauce was good as well. Would come back to try some of the other unique flavors like pistachio despite the issues. Hopefully they were just a one off thing.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. I'll definitely be back!

Yet another Italian restaurant going with the whole mafia theme, as suggested by their name,…read moreGoodfellas. They do tout themselves on their wood oven pizza, so naturally we got a magherita pizza. The portion was quite decent and the pizza was passable if not just average. I really liked the cheese they used. It was a bit savoury and had a rich dairy taste. I really wish their tomato sauce had more acidity and was less salty so that it can balance out the cheese. The dough however was slightly too chewy for my liking and the centre is a bit undercooked. When you try to pick up the slice, gravity starts to do its work and half the slice sags and the cheese topping goes down with it. I was not a fan of the tagliatelle con ragu. I thought I had ordered a pasta with veal in it, but it came across as a vegetarian pasta. I actually tasted a tiny bit of meat in my second last bite. If you are charging $26 for a pasta, please don't be a scrooge with the ingredients. But, what's not acceptable was the fact that the tagliatelle was overcooked while there were a few strands that were undercooked. We did dine in at an odd hour at 4:00pm, but service was definitely a bit slow. It really took the server awhile to acknowledge us and it was only then that she tapped us up with water. Perhaps, this is a bad location? Or we went at a bad time on a bad day? Nonetheless, it was not satisfactory experience.

Return visits while in Toronto (3 of 3)…read more This Nino D'Aversa, possibly the original one, is not in Toronto proper, but in the GTA. It's in Woodbridge, northwest of the city, and an area I learned about from fellow passengers aboard AZ 651 from Toronto to Rome when Alitalia was in operation and so were their 747s. I went in after parking the car, disappointed to see a few Subarus in the lot, and it all came back to me. The crowd appeared to have its regulars and the place was fairly full. I sat in approximately the same location I had before, which gave me a good view of all the action. It goes without saying that the food at Nino D'Aversa was good. Lunch consisted of a plate of lasagna, a chocolate cannolo, and hot tea. Clearly, the prices were higher, as they are everywhere, but it kept pace with the general context without pushing any boundaries. The service from behind the glass cases was fine. There is also a counter where you pay. I had had my phone out and was taking a few photos. What I still heard from one of the guys behind the counter, even though it was muted, was something like, 'What's wid all dese people takin' pictures?' If 'dese people' are taking pictures and putting them up to accompany a favorable review, then "shaddap you face." I'm just having fun with this because I had to keep from laughing when I overheard that. Along with that, obvious neighborhood dudes were hanging out in the front ... not in a Bronx sort of way, but in a more suburban type of way. What little I heard sounded like a more Canadian rendition of more mature "Jersey Shore" types without any gel or gold chains. I just hope that none of them piloted one of those Subarus. That would mess with my schemata. I can go with 4 stars for Nino D'Aversa. I've been happy lunching here. So, it makes for a decent combination of grub, the Woodbridge vibe (that appears to have lost that "gotta have" strength of when it was burgeoning many years ago), and a few guaranteed laughs that I have to push down, as if a cat had eaten a canary. However, it all works for me.

There are white curtains/tent to close the patio area in case of rain. Indeed, it is nicely set up. All waiters are wearing masks and are cautious. I didn't appreciate that the table beside us of 6 women were super loud - not considerate of other guests. You must use a QR code to access the menu or go on their website. I had the Ottima pizza with a substitute of arugula which I was happy to see that they gave me a large amount on top of the pizza. It didn't come to us super hot. The dough is decent. The crust part could be thinner and chewier. We asked the price of the gelato. It's $5 for takeout and $6.50 for dine-in. So to save a bit, we decided to take it out to eat near our cars. I had the wild berry flavour one. It was melty by the time we opened the container which was like 30 seconds away from the restaurant. It ended up too sweet for me. I would have liked it more frozen. So I didn't enjoyed it as much. No, I wouldn't order it again. Verdict- I've had better pizza. The menu is on the pricey side. Nice patio area and tons of parking spaces. I would only go back if I didn't have a choice.
