Return visits while in Toronto (3 of 3) This Nino D'Aversa, possibly the original one, is not in Toronto proper, but in the GTA. It's in Woodbridge, northwest of the city, and an area I learned about from fellow passengers aboard AZ 651 from Toronto to Rome when Alitalia was in operation and so were their 747s. I went in after parking the car, disappointed to see a few Subarus in the lot, and it all came back to me. The crowd appeared to have its regulars and the place was fairly full. I sat in approximately the same location I had before, which gave me a good view of all the action. It goes without saying that the food at Nino D'Aversa was good. Lunch consisted of a plate of lasagna, a chocolate cannolo, and hot tea. Clearly, the prices were higher, as they are everywhere, but it kept pace with the general context without pushing any boundaries. The service from behind the glass cases was fine. There is also a counter where you pay. I had had my phone out and was taking a few photos. What I still heard from one of the guys behind the counter, even though it was muted, was something like, 'What's wid all dese people takin' pictures?' If 'dese people' are taking pictures and putting them up to accompany a favorable review, then "shaddap you face." I'm just having fun with this because I had to keep from laughing when I overheard that. Along with that, obvious neighborhood dudes were hanging out in the front ... not in a Bronx sort of way, but in a more suburban type of way. What little I heard sounded like a more Canadian rendition of more mature "Jersey Shore" types without any gel or gold chains. I just hope that none of them piloted one of those Subarus. That would mess with my schemata. I can go with 4 stars for Nino D'Aversa. I've been happy lunching here. So, it makes for a decent combination of grub, the Woodbridge vibe (that appears to have lost that "gotta have" strength of when it was burgeoning many years ago), and a few guaranteed laughs that I have to push down, as if a cat had eaten a canary. This place is so depressing. The staff are quick to judge, give snidey looks and complain when you ask them to bring you certain items. For example (oil, cutlery, water) they all look like they have had the worst time working here and taking it out on the customers is not the right thing to do. Having to want dining service but have to chase the sever for the bill once i've sat down for over an hour and finished my food is crazy. No wonder this place has such a low star rating and all of the other Nino Daversa's have over 4 stars, this place is pathetic. Get staff that LOOK like they want to be here, or even PRETEND to want to be here. The couple beside me had a completely wrong order, incompetent staff. The lady at the front who has a pony tail and a sweater is the most miserable of all, an honourable mention to the young girl who works the baking goods, horrible customer service. This place has a small sit down area serving pizzas and a few sandwiches. I got the large margherita pizza which was thin crusted and came out very quickly. It didn't look like what I would classically expect as a margherita though - looked more like an upgrade of chain restaurant's cheese pizza. Taste was decent and price was reasonable. Because the crust is thin, the large would probably only fill 2 people up. I've also heard they charge for water, so make sure to explicitly ask for 'tap' water. read more

Ordered one large pizza Quattro stagioni. An awful smell of a stale food made me worried, while I was driving home. Opened the box. Square footage impressive, indeed. In front of me 4 stagioni mixed in only one. The topping mostly black olives with traces of cooked ham. Smell unpleasant. While cautiously eating the first slice, all of a sudden I hit a hot spicy patch, and gave up, as I do not tolerate too spicy food to the point of allergic reactions. Only a few pizzas, at least the Italian ones are spicy, and quattro stagioni is not supposed to be one of them. In any case I threw away the rest, saving my wife from the misery. Ah yes, ... the experience cost me $31 For a good Italian Espresso the time of extraction should be 25 sec. They do it in 13 sec , at least the one I was watching the preparation of. read more

I have been to this place precisely twice. The first time, my fiancée and I went to get a bite to eat one evening. The lady at the counter followed us around looking at us with annoyance and ended up chasing us out of the store because I was simply trying to decide what to order. The second time (I'm honestly not sure what possessed me to go a second time), I went to grab a coffee before doing my laundry....the woman at the counter essentially threw the coffee at me. Fine. When I went to cash out however is where it gets good. The bald gentleman (not sure if he is the proprietor) was cashing me out and I told him my tap doesn't work so I will have to insert the card. He tells me "tap" "The tap doesn't work, please turn it around so I can insert the card" "TAP DAMN IT" "Sir I have to insert the card" He throws the POS machine at me and once the machine prints the recipe he throws that at me too. I live in this community, I know it like the back of my hand, I consider it home, I walk all over and people have always been so kind, considerate and friendly. This is the ONLY place I have been treated like this. It was hard enough for me to write this review but I believe I owe it to persons who may want to patronize this place to just beware. You may catch this dude on a bad day, and if you do, heaven help you. read more

Nino D'Aversa Bakery - a half eaten pizza - Bakeries Near Me - Woodbridge, Ontario

The perks of working with a lot of Italians is that I get the scoop on good Italian restaurants/bakeries. We were in the area for a school excursion; one of my colleagues has a brother who lives up the street and this is the place that they always go to. According to my colleague, this location is the original one (and the best). Walking in, it looks old school. You see display after display of pastries. There's also an area of the bakery that has groceries, wood oven for pizzas, seating, and espresso. Being 10:30, we didn't try the pizza (would love to another time!), but we had cannoli with lattes whilst seating outside. The cannolis were delicious! $2.25 for a h u g e cannoli so pricing is reasonable. There are other locations, which I may check out as I live nowhere near Woodbridge. I was impressed though! Having been born in Italy and lived there till my mid teens, I'm pretty proud to say I can spot the differences between a real authentic Italian place and what not. (But in the end that's up to you to decide!) Nino D'Aversa's Bakery in Woodbridge does it a bit too well. And when I say that, I mean that the food is certainly good, from the bread and various pastries. All very good, and all very disgustingly over priced. It would be cheaper to book a flight to Italy and walk into any random bar/coffeeshop/bakery. Harsh much? Not really! I'm sure there are much better places out there, of same quality, and fair price. --- On a side note, they're very sexist. When I first moved to Canada, being fluent in Italian, I thought it would be a good idea to apply there, as they had open positions. They took a good look at me and flat-out told me the owner was only hiring girls. I dunno if that's something to report or what. It seems highly discriminatory to me... then again this is Woodbridge... You all have a nice day. read more

Our favourite spot for gelato, wood burning oven- baked pizza or fresh dough. The crust is ultra thin and crunchy and the service is quick and friendly. The atmosphere is super casual, so we feel comfortable bringing the whole family. Be sure to take some fresh sliced Italian bread on the way out. Carb heaven! read more

I've been to this bakery more than once, simply because I am in the area periodically and go for convenience, but after interacting with the staff and sampling their offerings, I have slowly lessened my visits, and now rarely ever go in if I can help it. Some of the staff are very friendly, but the managers there are very unwelcoming people. One of the general managers is very awkward. He will make aggressive comments and uncomfortable jokes, and seems to have no conception of personal space. One one occasion I was sitting at a table and he nonchalantly picked up my phone from the table and tried to get into it. He will also ask very personal questions, and if you refuse to answer, will loudly talk to other people around about something about you. The other manager is very rude, and will actually ignore you if you are waiting for a coffee, and then finally tell one of the other staff to serve you. On one occasion my friend ate something bad and was throwing up all night. When she went back to complain to the owner, this manager stormed into the office, into the private conversation, and started yelling, saying that she wasn't going to get any money back. Very unpleasant encounters. Also, their espresso is not very good. It's very bitter, almost sour. If you can avoid this place, do. There's another espresso bar just down the street, or St. Phillips just 5 min away. read more

I have been to a few other Niño D'Aversa Bakery locations and to me, this one is the very best. I feel like I am back in Italy when I walk in here. All the local Italians eat and shop here and most are speaking Italian. I like the atmosphere, it feels very authentic and old school. As for the food, it is homemade and never disappoints. They have great cheese and meat displays and good homemade bread. I recently met the cook who was very friendly and he gave me a taste of the various things in the hot table. Everything was delicious and just having a taste made me of course buy way too much. It was a really nice change from the big name stores to have the chef himself come out and talk to me about his specials. This makes all the difference to me and he is clearly passionate about his food...I like that! 5 stars and I will be visiting often - amazing cappuccino too! read more

Last night I arrived to pick up two pizzas and was ignored for 15 minutes and then given the wrong pizzas. The pizzas that I had ordered were sitting for the entire time that I was there and were no longer hot when I brought them home. When I complained to the manger/owner he implied that I could not have been waiting that long, as the pizzas were just out of the oven! I would have been happy with A simple apology. They will not have my business again, and I encourage other customers to patronize the many more customer friendly bakeries in the Woodbridge area. A relic of the passed. Very disappointed at what it has become. As time passes the less "authentic" these Italian places become. Living in Italy and appreciating the passion that goes into serving customers and providing them with the best possible product makes wonder how much we are getting ripped off for fake Italian. I visited the Woodbridge location today to buy an array of pastries. I waited for around 5 minutes before the lady behind the counter served me, even though there was no one else waiting to be served. I picked out the pastries that I wanted but the box she used was too small and she became very angry and told me that she did not have any more space in that box ( and I should have told her in advance the exact size box I wanted). She refused to change the box (!!) and I had to ask her three times to add the additional pastries and upgrade the box. She finally changed the box and started loudly complaining about me to her colleague in Italian (assuming that I could not understand ) To complain about a customer in their presence and refuse to upgrade a box to add more pastries is beyond silly and just bad business. read more
