First, It boggles my mind reading reviews by people from Manhattan saying this deli is expensive. It's not. Second, this is a basic German-style deli, the likes of which used to be a fixture in every NYC neighborhood in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I've travelled all over the city for the last 30 years looking for these places and this is just about the last place that still makes roast beef and potato salad the old way. Some of these place are still standing -- you can recognize them by the white tile and the style of store front signs -- but they are not making the basics home-made. You can get Boars Head cold cuts anywhere but if you need that old school tangy potato salad and nice rare roast beef (not dyed red with beet juice) the Douglaston Delicatessen is the last of its kind. read more

An institution in this neighborhood that continues to make quality products every day. I have been coming here since my family moved to Douglaston 17 years ago. SOme of the same friendly faces are still there and the staff that surrounds them are brought up with the same type of spirit the "old-timers" have. This is the best deli around my neighborhood. They make some diesel sandwiches and have all the meats and cheeses I like, including jarlsburg. Another great thing about this deli is they have 2.5 foot loaves of italian bread stocked up. I went in there one day before a Giants game and asked them to make me an italian hero on that bread for my friend and I. I was in awe of how it looked. Just like one ordered a week in advance he sliced the hero up into manageable pieces. It was exactly what my friend and I were looking for. After being upset with the new ownership of all the local delis I am happy that these guys are remaining true to the game. I will not go anywhere else for my deli needs than here. read more

This is deli is by far among the most elite around. It has absolutely fabulous soups, and possibly the best potato, macaroni, and coleslaw ANYWHERE! Great old school deli at a time when most mom and pop shuts are struggling to survive. I just moved to douglaston and tried this place out. Had a chicken cutlet hero with their carolina slaw. Most of the salads and food is made in-house and is always fresh. Their sandwiches are awesome with The Bridge and The Manor being my personal favorites. My family's been coming to this deli since the early 70's, when we moved to the neighborhood. I lived out of area for years, but moved back about a year ago. I started going to the deli regularly shorty after I returned. All of the guys behind the counter are very friendly and many know me by name. The food is fresh and all of the soups, hot foods and salads are homemade. My personal favorites are the mac and cheese, veggie tuna and health salad. The chili is pretty awesome too. read more

I saw the picture of the ham and cheese and dwcided to try it. Got a roast beef for my dad and a ham and cheese for myself. Taste wise, there was nothing special. It was a taste, a bit bland. The thing that bothered me was that I ordered a hero, so in the middle there was average amount of ham and cheese but on the edge and the rear part of the bread.. it was just bread. So basically they give you a while hero bread sandwich but it feels like only half the sandwich is actually filled with meat. The greatest part of this deli is their potato salad. Decided to try it and I'm glad that I did. It's the best I've tasted so far. Kind of reminded me of school potato salad with a better taste. I would go buy a sandwich from elsewhere but would get the potato salad from here. read more

The salads are absolutely phenomenal. I have yet to have a better potato salad anywhere. Health salad, macaroni salad, and cole slaw are also frequent pick ups of mine. Although the salads are the main reason I come here (buy them by the pound!), the sandwiches are also good. This place reminds me of the kind of delis we had growing up. I go here every Sunday morning for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich and it is perfect every time. Fantastic deli!! Folks you don't see these old fashioned German delis anymore and this one is the best around.. FOR MILES. The homemade salads are to die for and even though not advertised you can get any sandwich imaginable. The prices are a bit more then most places but the quality you get is second to none! The store itself is stocked with a wide array of chips (gourmet or generic), snacks, cakes, and ice cream. They have almost every major beverage on hand and a fantastic selection of imported beer along with small time brewers. All in all of you want delicious food from a clean and very friendly place, this is where you want to shop. I personally think cherry valley is dirty and the food is way to greasy and it all starts to taste the same. It has gone downhill fast.
