DO NOT send your child here. DBH needs to be shut down. My child was sexually assaulted by her roommate. They locked her in a room with a violent individual who hurt her. She was forced to then see her roommate on the floor who continually harassed her for 5 days in the facility. My daughter's medication was withheld for 4 days. There was one excuse after another as to why she wasn't being given her medication. They claimed I never signed paperwork for them to continue giving her the mental health meds she's been on since December. Which was untrue. Even after signing the form the 2nd time, it still wasn't in her chart. A nurse finally called me on day 4 and asked me about her meds and I gave verbal permission. On her last full day of her stay she was finally given the Prozac they had been withholding. She was made to wear the same 2 outfits all week. They suggest packing 5 days of clothes but they withhold the clothes you send in for them to use. She ended up having her period midway through her stay. She continued to have to wear soiled clothes all week as they would not provide sanitary pads. She stated the nurses said they were too busy to get her pads to wear. There were multiple fights among the children daily . My daughter spent every day terrified and could not sleep at night because she was so scared. I could not remove my daughter for legal reasons, 72 hour hold. But then had to sign a form giving them 72 hour heads up before I could take her. She came out of DBH traumatized. No contact from the social worker on her case and 1 phone call from the psychiatrist who obviously should not be a child psychiatrist. These people have care over our children! They have no business being anywhere near children. I'm appalled by what took place. I allowed my child to be admitted because she needed help, compassion, medication management. We receieved none of that. read more

I wouldn't recommend staying here to my absolute worst enemy. The staff is majority non caring and at their best they're escalatory to mentally ill patients who came for a space to grow from their suicidal thoughts and addictions. The food was absolutely horrendous, I've had better food out of an MRE. The hard plastic chairs and beds offer absolutely ZERO comfort and have made my service connected back pain and nerve damage worse resulting in my need for intense physical therapy and recovery. Roaches litter this facility and in my week stay the only "cleaning" to be seen was spraying the vicinity with basic cleaner and if you're lucky they'd sweep. The gym is a carpet half basket ball court where you'd get 30 minutes of "exercise" Onto "treatment" the only "activity therapy" offered is coloring and word searches. Their idea of treatment is medicating you with whatever they think fits and asking you if you still want to kill yourself. Onto the worst atrocity of them all, the staff. Staff would rather escalate and watch a problem over any sort of intervention or doing their actual job. Techs were quoted directly saying "this isn't worth my 15 an hour". Staff repeatedly yelled at easily triggered unstable patients, fights broke out daily and staff and patients could easily see the escalation and let it happen choosing only to intervene after food or fists were thrown. The only way to be discharged is if your doctor and social worker come to an agreement on your stability and further treatment. Good luck on that one as there's only FOUR SOCIAL WORKERS for over 100 patients and same goes for doctors. Doctors were repeatedly quoted to be communicating with individuals social workers and then found to be lying directly to patients after tracking down begging pleading to speak with their assigned social workers. Social workers also have been seen and quoted disrespecting patients and ESPECIALLY veterans in this facility to the point where one of the techs that actually cared had to remind the social worker that the patient is a human being too. Sleeping isn't available in this facility as every 13 minutes your room is entered and a flash light is shown into your face to assure you're still exactly where they left you. Treatment in this facility is altogether unavailable most patients I had shared my stay with are all in agreement that this stay had only made their illnesses worse. For the thousands of dollars made on insurance per patient the level of this facility is utterly disgusting disrespectful and discriminatory read more

The staff at Dover Behavioral Health are outstanding. Our 18 year old daughter appreciates the consistent schedule, the group therapy and opportunity to earn privileges. her caring staff including Kenisha H, Wanda M, Ylondia L, Kathy W, Amy R help our daughter go from an out of control crises to a calm, thoughtful and positive outlook with much hope for the future. All of these reviews ring true in my experience here over 10 years ago. It's sad to see these things have not changed. I have degenerative arthritis and they stripped me of my arthritis meds, (non-narcotic). I couldn't even have my lidocaine patch. I could have one aspirin a day-if I could get the staff's attention! My arthritis got really bad from the skinny mattress and plastic office furniture in the recreation/meeting group room, where we spent all our time. I began to have spasm in my back and was doubled over in pain most the time. No staff asked me if I was alright. They probably assumed I was i was in withdrawal because almost everyone there was in for drugs or alcohol rehab. My husband and I were sober for many years. I only had an exhaustive mental breakdown, and wanted a break from life. I took a bunch of old migraine pills, just to sleep for a day and night. I had not known they were in the barbiturate family! I was acting crazy but I was not suicidal. My husband thought it was best to check me in. Little did I know I was going back to prison. It was just like when I went in for a couple dui's years back. I had prison flashbacks and couldn't sleep in my bed. I got permission to put my mattress on the floor from head lady. The day I was supposed to be discharged one of the enforcers- big men who could look in your room pretty much any time- told me I wasn't going anywhere. I told him I had permission to move my mattress, then he just scoffed. it was true about keeping you the fullest extant your insurance will pay. Because I didn't leave that day- disappearing social worker for my discharge. When she did come she said I wasn't dischared because I had med-seeking activity? probably because I had no knowledge of of opioids at ALL-& when my roommate said to ask for Vicodin as a bad joke on me-(I was naive and thought it was an innocent drug that was allowed there)-I did. The Dr sent me away with nothing, but did say he would look into my patches. This was many days now. 1) True- no 1 on 1 counciling- just pre-teens who walk the halls once a day, u can talk to if you want. 2) True- you probably won't leave until you agree to take lithium, prescribed by a dr who doesn't even know you. 3) True- over-crowded group meetings where you won't get a word in edgewise. 4) True- you'll be kept forever if you have good insurance. 5) True- there are big men "enforcers" that are always checking you. Much like prison. I have come back to review this because my marriage counselor suggested I take a break from my situation and go to a behavioral health hospital. I wanted her to know what she might put her patients through by suggesting this. read more

I feel like my stay there was a total waste of time and money. The place is very dirty and disgusting. They don't clean very well at all. The nurses station was warm while the patient area was cold. The paint was peeling and there was joint compound exposed in the bathroom. I feel like they kept me so long just to milk all they could from my insurance. The entire stay was pointless. I don't feel any different than when I went in. They had activity therapy that was meant for children. For the money they should have had social workers doing talk therapy. They have psychiatrists that spend five minutes with you and then throw a bunch of psychiatric drugs at you. It's basically all about the drugs. They kept me for 20 days! How is this supposed to make people feel better about themselves? I feel worse than when I went in. I should have been out in a week or less. You couldn't shave or clip your fingernails. I feel that I was totally ripped off. Stay away from that place! read more

My child was signed in voluntarily due to suicidal thoughts and self harm. We were told a mandatory 72 hr hold then an evaluation and then we could sign her out. She was checked in on Wednesday and on the following Monday we were able to finally talk to the social worker and psychiatrist. They were both very nice but said we couldn't sign her out for up to 72 ADDITIONAL hours. So she was in there for 8 days. We were never told we had to put in a written request and then wait another 72 hrs It is just insane that I signed my child in on a voluntary basis to see a psychiatrist asap instead of waiting and they kept her for 8 days just because they "have the right to hold the full 72 hrs after the written request". They don't have to but they chose to. My child was not prescribed any meds and they even said she was no longer a harm to herself. Seems like it was just them running the clock out because they could. My child expressed wanting to come home and there wasn't anything I could do. It's things like this that make parents and children wary of seeking help. read more

If I could vote this a 0 I would I was 12 when I went there and I was stripped of my rights I barely got to talk to my parents and I was in the shower one day and it was time to to checks and one of the female staff came in and said I need to see you I WASN'T WHERING ANYTHING and the staff just opened the curtain while I was showering and a different day I was using the bathroom and the staff just once again opened the curtain while I was using the bathroom I felt so violated by them I wish I never go back there and I new if I told anyone I would get in trubble read more

the WORST at helping patients. Locked me in a room for 3 HOURS and wouldn't let me out. Claimed they were trying to "help" me. When in reality they locked me in a room, locked my phone and wallet in a cabinet. & we're EXTREMELY rude to my father when he was helping me out of the situation. rude remarks were made like "do u struggle with THIS all the time?" when referring to my father whom was ON THE PHONE while that was said. that's all, carry on :) but if you consider going there just prepare for how awful you're about to get treated. :) read more

I was admitted there when I was 16 and I hated the experience there. I had to fake everything so I can get out quickly. They didn't help with anything that I was going through. The staff is only there just for a paycheck. They really aren't there to help. read more

My daughter was sent here against my wishes because it was the only bed available in the State of DE. She has been there since Monday it is now Wednesday and my daughter called me last night to let me know that they were releasing her on Friday it would have been sooner but they couldn't get a social worker there sooner. We have not had a family meeting without any research on my daughter. I'm furious at how totally unprofessional they seem to be at this facility. So I received a phone call this morning to confirm what my daughter told me. I am to prepare to take my daughter home Friday as she will be released so I asked "why not just let me have her tomorrow for Thanksgiving" I was told that "they couldn't get the worker there before Friday". I had a really negative experience with Dover Behavioral Health. But my brother had it 10 times worse. My brother was depressed and in crisis mode and sent to this facility because apparently Dover doesn't have any appropriate mental health facilities. They put in a room with a drug addictive that was going through withdrawals and was being aggressive. My brother truly feared for his safety and no one would listen to him or any member of our family when we were all trying to call and have him put in a different room. The operator was hard to understand and very rude and hung up on me several times. I was even told that they couldn't even tell me that he was there. I understand the rule of HIPAA but I wasn't trying to get information on his health care, I was trying to be an advocate for his safety. Every time a member of the family did get to speak with an actual person we would be told a different story on the protocol for getting him released so he could get some "Real" help. The first rule on treating someone for anything is that they should feel safe and my brother definitely didn't feel safe and he didn't trust any member of the staff. A 24 hour observation turned into 6 days. The facility is definitely trying to increase the amount they can bill insurance. They don't seem to care about the patients. They seemed more focused on milking the insurance companies. I wish I knew more about how to get the authorities to check this place out. Something is definitely wrong there. read more

This place is an absolute nightmare. The staff was rude, the management was terrible and then I get stuck with this huge bill. I have been paying on this bill for two years and its like they don't want to get paid......the website payment option does not work, they have no pay by phone option, and no is ever in the business office to take a payment. If I wasn't worried about my credit, I would give up because apparently they don't need my money after they mistreated my and daughter who was admitted for treatment. Our child was referred to Dover Behavioral after having suicidal thoughts and we found the experience very positive. She was treated well, learned coping skills and behavior strategies that helped her in her 9 day stay. She was referred to their step down day program and has thrived since then. Worst facility. Would rate a negative if I could. I was admitted against my will- I am a 'plus size' and their hospital clothing did not fit me so I was stuck in the same shorts, t-shirt and left without undergarments for two weeks humiliated. Staff was sarcastic and unwilling to give simple commodities like a q-tip never mind something like an ice pack- instead of doing their jobs commonly had YouTube up on their screens. It took 5 days to see the psychiatrist and in that time I saw multiple cases of patient abuse in both physical and verbal such as an 80 year old woman who was scared and confused as to why she was admitted and this guy Jay (orderly) decided to calm her down with a screaming match. I saw stuff you just wish you never had to see. You go through one-size-fits-all classes on basics such as "the importance of hygiene" and "how to make good habits" as if you're 1st graders. Childish go-along papers to fill out are given & you're forced to write your answers out in golf pencils - eraser-less pencils that are 4 inches long which are hard to write with and are dull to the eye. (Nothing makes you feel quite as worthless as being unable to write like a competent adult.) I begged nurses for ice packs DAILY and was turned down multiple times during my 2 week stay despite visible bruising and swelling from a fall days prior which stemmed my wrongful admission. Once out of frustration I 'snapped' and let slip that 'my mother JUST died because her legs looked like this, I need to take care of this it is really distressing me" and then was told to stop being dramatic by the nurse on staff. Stop being dramatic... THAT is what I got from a nurse when I told them how I felt? Mom had just passed days prior because she let untreated leg edemas finally infect and turn blue/black/red and died from toxic shock syndrome. It was traumatizing and I was told to stop being dramatic? Disgusting nurse. I am on Cymbalta for Fibromyalgia (three years) and Dr. K Mirza decided to put me on lithium as well then took a 4 day vacation where I could not get in contact with him as I had adverse reactions to his medication mixing with mine. I told the drug nurse if he was not available to help me while I was shaking, feverish, etc. I was not continuing his medication because it was clearly harming me... and I was warned "If you don't take the medication you won't get out." Needless to say I decided my health was more important than their threats to keep me in their poor morale facility longer. Later found I was having symptoms of seretonin syndrome from the mix of cymbalta and lithium which are not to be mixed. I have medicaid which paid for everything... but this girl I met who was there for drug detox (who was having multiple seizures per day) was sent home immediately. She was uninsured. The girl was having multiple seizures a day and had no home to go to and they sent her away but kept me when I was begging them to let me out so I could properly grieve my mother and be with my loving boyfriend? Something doesn't add up. Disgusting facility with even more disgusting people on staff. Stay far away. read more

I totally agree with C.R., both patients and family members are stripped of their rights and if you know what you are talking about and questions their policies and procedures they get defensive. UNLICENSED STAFF. Their are people that you can contact. Their is the Joint Commission on Accreditation Healthcare Organizations. As you said, the staff does not give a rat ass about their patient. Can't say much at this time, but i will be contacting Joint Commission and the power thats be. Someone need to regulate this place. They deserve no star whatsoever. I will literally kill myself before I let anyone send me to this nightmare of a place again. Nothing is ever cleaned, germs, bacteria, feces, urine- all of that and more could be on every surface you touch and lay on because literally NO cleaning goes on at all. At one point in time myself and other patients took the matter into our own hands and cleaned an disinfected everything with Lysol wipes before a nurse took them away for containing bleach. Staff members-especially on the adolencent unit- are dehumanizing and power trip, One staff member in particular would refuse to let every kid on our unit choose our own lunch because of a few trouble makers. We all jad to eat peanut butter & jelly while this jerk ate his normal lunch in front of us as punishment. Also- the psychologist or social worker who performs the assessment just HAPPENS to work for Dover Behavioral Health. Isn't that a conflict of interest? Wouldn't it be in the company's best interest to have as many patients committed as possible? Wouldn't you want someone who is a little more impartial or who genuinely concerned about a patient's mental health for preform an assessment? Not the case. Terrible place to semd your friends or loved ones. Poor hygeine, overworked stressed staff, poor planning and supervision, rude, disorganized, money-hungry. read more

I had to call them back to see what was happening. She wasn't even sure of the hours people could call to talk to their current patients! She was very rude as well, short replies, snobby. read more

After my discharge, my belongings couldn't be found. My recent efforts following up with Dover Behavioral Health Systems to resolve the issue have been fraught with multiple transfers, multiple disconnects, and a defensive and selfish demeanor following a "procedure (hardly worth the exercise)" from dismissive staff (and with talking with some of the patients, theft is not an uncommon complaint). I told the facility that I have all affairs in order to verify more comprehensive consideration, ready to move on to proceedings, legally. I thought I would call Rockford Hospital for further assistance, as DBHS and Rockford are "sister" facilities, however, after trying to work with DBHS this will only prolong things unnecessarily, I feel, based on the treatment they provide, both inpatient and out. read more

Beware of this awful place. The so called rehab center is a farce, no matter what you go there for, you will be held for the maximum amount your insurance will pay for, whether or not you need it or not. I was sent there after hospitalization and was told I needed physical theray. Long story short, I was held for the full number of days my insurance would pay for, the psychiatrist did not do a thing for me, after all all you get is 10-15 minutes a day (not on weekends). And my physical therapy needs were not taken care of! After almost a year later I still have dificulty walking and have become sedentary because of this, gaining lots of pounds and now worse off because of the confinement in this facility! I have severe nightmares and the thought of this awful experience plagues me everyday. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! It is also very filthy, and being unable to walk for my entire ordeal there I could not bath. ZERO help from staff, even after you ask for something, you can wait for hours to days for a response! I have never saw a place like this, it is a disgusting environment that does very little to help people. The staff also complains about it, and I over heard them saying that this facility accomplishes nothing, it is a revolving door for many! Finally, once in....you can not get out! Unless the useless psychiatrist releaes you, sort of like a sentence in prison....yet the psychiatrist does nothing in the few minutes you see it Mon-Fri...leaving weekends of nothing, but useless so called sessions with an poorly educated so called mental heath counselor with little to no knowledge except for what is written on a script given to them!! I am still in RECOVERY from this place after almost a year of being released! Having to seek psychological care from a true psychiatrist, who states that Dover Behavioral Health created such problems for me, that he was going to look into the facility. I have become disabled because of their disregard for the individual which was just looking for the insurance money! read more

I hope this message gets to someone before they are admitted or helping someone to be admitted to Dover Behavioral Health. It is sad to say how bad this facility actually is. This facility is for people who have mental problems and by no means do they get the help they need. You would think there would be doctors there to help people and to talk about their problems. This is the exact opposite of what happens. I know someone who went there because they were having a really hard time with life so they sadly tried to take theirs. Once stable she was sent to DBH for treatment. I arrived later on when visiting hours were in place and saw the horror of this facility. The staff was very rude, everyone had to meet in the same room to see their friends and family like it was prison. They would't let her wear the clothes she went to the hospital in so they had her in the blue hospital suit, she was the only one wearing it. So now she is in a room full of people she doesn't know like an outcast. Days later she still wasn't able to talk with a doctor about her problems that she was struggling with. The only thing she was asked is how she was and if she was participating in the "sessions". I will get to this in a bit. She was on 5 different medications and was told by the nurses that if she didn't take them that she might have to stay longer for refusing "treatment". How is this helping someone? She asked the doctor later to take her off all the medication and just give her what she is normally prescribed. His response was awful. He said after everything you have been through I want to keep you on the medication. I don't understand how he can say this when she hasn't been able to talk to anyone about her problem. Let alone the fact that the reason she is there is because she overdosed. So i guess just giving her more medication is the answer. She was exhausted one day because she didn't sleep well the night before, so after breakfast she took a nap. She was told later on that if she wanted to be discharged she would have to participate. They just add to the problems with no regard to how a person is actually feeling. As far as the sessions go, they are a joke. These sessions are led by individuals that have no training at all. You can literally have a High School Diploma and work at DBH. She over heard them googling what their next session should be. So you have mental health facility that is supposed to help people work through their problems and your not asking about them or talking with them one on one... Oh thats right you have google to solve everything. One girl who was there said she drove herself there because she knew she needed help. That sounds like an amazing thing, someone realizing they need treatment before something bad happens. Unfortunately she was discharge two days later because her insurance didn't cover it. All this place is doing is sucking money and giving nothing back. Why would you send someone to this place if they can't talk with a doctor and get the actual help they need? This is so unfair to everyone, except the money cow on the other side. You are literally paying for some kid with a high school diploma to belittle you and possibly make things worse. read more

I would seriously think about sending someone here. My daughter was referred by Child Priority Response (CPR) who is a affiliated with Delaware Guidance. We drove over an hour in bad weather to sit in a waiting room for over an hour on a Thursday night. Once we went back for the intake, it took over two hours and the attending nurse had no personality. The person that took my daughter back looked like she couldn't be bothered and we were wasting their time. Really!!!! Within the first 24 hour I was called 5 times by 5 different groups. Billing called to advise me of my insurance and they were rude and condescending. The social worker called to set an appointment for a family meeting. She later didn't show and no one called because she went into labor and no one knew who was supposed to cover her work load. The doctor called, he was difficult to understand since he was on speaker and had a thick Indian accent. Then the staffed called twice with misc. questions. Frustrating when they call your cell phone and you are working and gave them your work phone number. When billing called, they told me that they would need the balance of her bill after insurance paid at discharge. What! This place charges $1,000.00+ for impatient therapy. After my insurance the bill is in the thousands of dollars. Insulting! And all billing can say is we accept cash, credit card, or check. When I worked out payment arrangements, they wanted several hundred dollars as a down payment.........top of the rude staff I spoke to each time I called to speak to my daughter or someone as a point of contact. There is no single point of contact for you to reach out to, they don't return phone calls. To add insult to injury, they didn't call my cell phone the day my employer was closed to tell my daughter could be discharged, so they got another day out of me. When I didn't get the message they left at work, they just wanted to release her to go home. No follow up, no transition or exit plan for her of t he family. I had to push for their out patient program. Which brings me to another disaster. Don't use the busing services, the bus driver can't communicate with you. From the beginning I explained my work hours and have tried to work with them as best as I can until the one morning I called to see when the bus would be available to pick up my daughter. I was told at 7:30 in the morning that the bus is another hour to hour and half out..............What! How is a parent supposed to keep their job if the bus cant say call and say "Hey, I have a new person on the bus today, I will be at this place around this time. Will that work for you so you can get to work?" When the issue is brought to her attention that the route should be different or something else should have been done, the reply is "Well I can't accommodate your needs." That was never requested, it was a matter of common decency and communication so all parties can be where they need to be. This place is rude, disorganized, condescending, and just looking to suck up your money. If there were another place in Sussex County Delaware, I would try them first. read more
