Super cute store. Very impressed with the vintage items and jewelry. I got the cutest Rhinestone blingy earrings. They instantly caught my eye. They had some really unique fur jackets and trench coats. The boutique is a good spot to pickup a one of a kind item. I enjoyed browsing the store. The owner was really nice and the store wasn't overcrowded. That is always a plus. I will be back as I wanna grab the this roller perfume and maybe even grab some earrings that I left. read more

I'm a good shopper, but not really a vintage shopper. Every so often I give it a shot, but then end up back at my favorite local boutiques instead. And that's exactly what happened at Dovetail... I took my brother here on Friday to see if I could find any accessories for my dress for the Yelp Retro Spring Fling. I definitely didn't pick the right shopping companion cause my bro was restless just minutes after admiring their old school record player. If you are a vintage shopper they do have some cool accessories (purses, jewelry, etc) to choose from here. And even a few racks of clothes. I was a little surprised by the prices...they were higher than I'd expect, but what do I know about vintage shopping. I ended up choosing a yellow flower for my hair, although when I went to pay for it the saleswoman told me that the flower was actually part of her window display. Oops. She was nice enough to let me have the flower for free. Not sure if I'll go back since it's not really my thing, but some of my favorite hardcore vintage shoppers love it so check it out for yourself.. read more

Saw a gorgeous gold plated ceramic Bull sculpture on Dovetail's instagram. I DM'd Julie, she responded immediately, and it was shipped to my home in Seattle shortly after. Not only did I get my Bull, but I received free Palo Santo that gave me some sick mystical vibes during the week. Shops like these are what gives me hope in small businesses. Store absolutely rocks. I will concur. I first saw the Dovetails gals (and their wonderful vintage wares) at a trunk show at the May 2009 Yelp Retro Spring Fling...and it only took me about 18 months to FINALLY stop in for some vintage retail therapy on a blustery Sunday evening recently. Delayed buzz marketing at its finest, I say. Dovetail is top-notch when it comes to carefully culled vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories. It's absolutely a bit more high end than Seek a few doors down (also love), so this is more for...everyday wear and for selecting a few pieces to build around. Think beautiful sweaters, skirts, dresses, etc. You won't necessarily find kitschy dresses you could wear to a throwback formal, costume-y jewelry or anything like that. You might, but it'll probably be a bit pricey if you just plan to wear it one evening. You WILL find classic pieces that have stood the test of time and look radiant even 40 years past their original heyday. My final purchase? A fantastically preserved purple "housecoat" that twirls just right as I pretend that I'm wearing it as a "housecoat" and not just as a dress over leggings. The bright orange detail punctuates the retro scale, and I can guarantee no one else in Chicago has this same piece. For $60, it was a deal. I've already worn it 4x, and I'm calling it my Thanksgiving outfit. There is a small dressing room...and the store is decorated in a fashion that makes you want to hike up those 'hose, slip on some white gloves and a housecoat and drink Manhattans while dreaming of men that look like Don Draper. Or, you just grab a housecoat...get home, and drink some wine while sitting on the couch in it. CAREFULLY. Either way, Dovetail is tops. read more

Dovetail was another stop I made while I was visiting my BFF in Chicago during the Pitchfork Music Festival. It was in the same neighborhood as Very Best Vintage but had a completely different and more upscale vibe that I enjoyed. This cozy shop was decorated very well with gorgeous furniture and adornments. The merchandising is also another high mark with goods displayed lavishly throughout. The prices match the aesthetic, as they should because the designer merchandise is in excellent condition. The inventory is well-edited with pieces from Vivienne Westwood, Yves St. Laurent, Tom Ford, and other couture and premium designer brands. The offerings also included a nice selection of Men's pieces, independent new designers, and gorgeous assortment of jewelry. I walked out with a show-stopping large owl pendant necklace that I receive rave reviews each time it is worn. I was also able to find a snazzy black and white sleeveless sweater dress for a reasonable price as well. I don't believe that I spent over $100 on this visit....or maybe I did...and I am in denial? Doesn't matter. I am smitten. The only reason, I was not able to give Dovetail 5 stars is because the shopgirl (not the owner) was not helpful at all. She was on the phone when we first walked in and didn't even nod in our direction until we specifically asked for a fitting room because our hands were full of items. Even after her phone-call, we had to start and clear out our own fitting rooms and weren't offered any assistance until we were ready to check out. Again, with my background in owning a women's upscale retail boutique and my prowess in the shopping arena....this is a detriment to this lovely shop. I am not a particularly high maintenance customer because I know my way around the business. However, if a regular customer were to come in and was looking for a little service, this employee would leave a bad impression. I would certainly come back to visit Dovetail again when I am in the Chicago area again around March. I just hope that someone else is working. read more

Dovetail would be a fabulous addition to any Chicago neighborhood but that stretch of Chicago Ave. is certainly overdue for a boutique of this caliber. Dovetail has a small yet perfect selection of vintage goodies, including jewelry, handbags, home goods, and other course, clothes. They have a pretty ample selection of both men's and women's stuff, which is nice, given that a lot of stores offer a t-shirt or two in their men's collection. The wonderful thing is that I didn't see a single thing that was anywhere near overpriced--the sticker matched the quality of the products. I went in around Halloween seeking a cigarette holder for my Audrey costume, and although they had just sold their last one, I ended up walking out with the perfect wool winter skirt for like, 36 bucks. Oh, and there is an adorable kitty hanging out from time to time, who is incredibly friendly. I'm going back next week to do some holiday shopping, and I'm looking forward to finding some beautiful, unique pieces for some lovely friends and family. I really wanted to like this store. I've been exploring the neighborhood and checking out vintage stores. This one is really pretty, but I found almost nothing. Also, I walked in and said 'hi' and was pretty much ignored. I went to try a couple of things. Still ignored. Two girls were busy chit chatting at the store. I've read and seen many great things from dovetail and have been eager to check it out since January. I FINALLY was able to see what was inside the store during my last visit a week or two ago and it was everything I imagined it would be. It's clean, clutter free and the pieces are well curated--definitely worth a look. That is, if you catch the store open. It still amazes me that every review seemed to have no problem getting into the store, whereas I've tried plenty of times to stop by during store hours noted on the store and on the website plenty of times since January. I have no qualms with impromptu days off, but it'd be nice if the website was updated for the day, or if a quick note was placed on the door. read more

Julie is just about the loveliest shop owner I've met in the vintage boutique world. On my first (or maybe second?) visit I was just popping in to stay warm and kill time while waiting for the bus. And she actually got her iphone and looked up the bus schedule for me so I knew how much time I had to look around! Then I somehow cut my finger on my jacket pocket and she rushed me some first aid supplies from the back. Seriously! Yeah, I was the dream customer: just looking and bleeding all over the place. But she was as gracious as ever. I love the the windows and general aesthetic of Dovetail. It's a little more upscale and lady-like. The collection is super edited and I think their sense of style, understanding of the product, and level of service completely justify a higher price point. I was sort of annoyed by the one negative review (Sandy D.) because I feel like a lot of small-scale boutiques get screwed by folks like that. Buyers remorse can bring out the worst in people. Sounds like those ebay prices came from unknowing sellers - pure luck. And somehow this woman wanted the shop owner to abandon industry standards and common store policies to oblige her. I know it's a tough business to be in and our local shops need our support more than ever! read more

I think the clothing (and reasonable price points) speak for itself; there's a reason why they've gotten so much reputable press coverage just in its first year of opening. I'm usually pretty picky and hard on these stores but Dovetail owners really know their stuff. Everything is well-curated with an ever-evolving collection. But more importantly, these Dovetail girls really understand their consumers and relate to their customers not as "shop girls" but as friends. The advice and friendliness of the in store experience is unique and wonderful, in and of itself. Save yourself time and make this your no. #1 priority when you are looking for vintage wear. I bought a shirt here for a friend. They have clothes for guys and gals, so they have their bases covered. I needed a little help picking out a shirt for a girl, and they helped me find something that I wouldn't have originally picked. As it turns out, I don't know what it takes because my friend loved it. Their guys clothes seemed cool. They had shirts, ties, and jackets, but what really caught my eye were the vintage hood ornaments. I didn't see the price, which is probably good because I would have bought one. I adore Dovetail. I found it through Yelp! one day when I was jonesing for some vintage goodness, and have returned many times, never disappointed. Very low-pressure staff, which is key for a small store like this one. Good rotation of merch, and they're great about advertising sales and promoting art shows/music shows. I've found several now-signature pieces there and always get compliments. Price point is also pretty darn reasonable for the quality and variety of clothes there. In the interest of saving time, I'm not going to beat around the bush about this place. It's fantastic and worth all five of the stars I'm attributing to it. Under what criteria am I deciding them five star worthy you ask? I'm reviewing them on the basis of decor, selection, service, and price. Dovetail inhabits a an open, airy space, with a big picture window, and carefully edited racks of clothing along the left and right walls and well preserved mid-century furniture and accessories bisecting the room. The decor is visually interesting and provides multiple anchor areas full of color and pattern that coincide with the arrangement of merchandise. That's a plus and a nuance that I've see in few boutiques in Chicago. And if it's neglected in high end boutiques to say it's been overlooked in most vintage stores is an understatement. Dovetail operates in a rarefied strata on their decor. Onward. Dovetails is again rarefied in its careful attention to selecting pieces that won't be found just anywhere. In this respect, it's in the company of Silver Moon, which is another place where you just know, you have the only piece still extant and in good condition. Unlike Silver Moon, you have a larger selection of unique pieces that are actually wearable in different situations. Believe me I'm still wearing the cream knee length halter dress with gold embroidery that I bought from Dovetail, but not the periwinkle petticoat I got from SM. Now I have to admit here, that I'm not the hippest, coolest, super tiny hipster to ever to exist. In fact, I'm a documented non hipster; I mock mercilessly. I've never been to Pitchfork. I don't wear odd pieces layered on one another and no I've never lived in Wicker Park. I hold down a job in Internet Sales, am a solid size 8, and know I have some of the lamest, friends around since we drink non ironic labels of beer, host dinner parties, garden, and watch baseball games. The reason you must know all of this, is not that I'm missing out on my therapy sessions, but because the people I've encountered at Dovetail have been some of the nicest shopkeepers I've encountered anywhere (and I travel a bit). I love vintage clothing and always have. What I've become accustomed to is going into a vintage store, where I wander aimlessly throughout, pulling out one by one to discern sizing and price, and pretty much not being spoken to until I make it to the counter three hours later with one item to buy. At Dovetail, I was immediately greeted, allowed to wander for a few minutes, then asked if I needed help or had "anything specific in mind I was looking for" (and yes that's a direct quote I remembered since it was the first time anyone in a vintage store or boutique ever asked it to me), then when I answered I needed help I received it. Simple as that. Because surviving vintage pieces always tend to be skinny minnie size, the owner?/sales associate, looked me over, walked to a rack (color arranged), sifted instinctively passed all the colors that with suck with my mocha choca latte skin tone and brought out the aforementioned cream and gold halter dress and a fabulous peachy sheath that makes me want to shake my booty just thinking about it. I tried on both, the halter was an off label and only $30 and the peachy sheath w/ hand stitching was a label and $165; the owner/sales associate looked me over in them both and said the cream halter was a better fit from my skin tone and body build and would be more versatile and gently weened me away from the too snug sheath . That girl (what a cutie) saved me $130 and the embarrassment of looking like a mottled sausage or going on that diet. Because I paid with cash, she even gave me a discount. Seriously. As for price, Dovetail is the most fairly priced vintage I've encountered in Chicago. Somehow non serious vintage shoppers have gotten it into their heads that vintage should always mean cheap and it's my belief (handed down from my grandmother and great aunts) that if you want cheap old clothes then you can head to the resale shops or Am Vets or the Salvation Army (all of which I do) and when you want quality vintage pieces that will anchor your wardrobe or be your statement piece for years to come, you pay for it. I have a vintage dress I bought five years ago at $185, it needs some work but I plan on wearing it on my wedding day. Vintage is about commitment not some cheap score (though it's nice when it happens). It's possible to find both a cheap score and a piece for years to come at Dovetail. For that I'm appreciative. read more

Sorry, I haven't done a good yelp for a long while and have a lot of backed up reviews to do, plus it's 2:00 am in the morning and I'm watching To Catch a Predator, and am pretty bored and in a lot of pain, foot problems, so I decided to do some long over do reviews, first of which is Chicago's new vintage shop, Dovetail Chicago. After, trying to figure out the hours of this freaking place, it was tricky and it's Wed thru Sun 12pm-8pm, I believe, I walked in and was cheered up and smiled at the pretty and avant backdrop of Dovetail. Dovetail's interior is mostly white giving it a hip, mod feel but with the warmness of the past with it's vintage goodies and array of vintage radios and furniture. As the far as the merchandise goes, I was hoping for some more goodies, but that's the thing about vintage, some days are fulled with great things, other days are not. Not saying they didn't have nice things there, just some things were not for me. I did spot a few things I really liked: A hip looking travel bag that was in top shape, vintage eyewear, and a beautiful vintage pink, gold, and lavender dress that I fell in love with, it's plus-sized too, yes!!! It's probably the best looking plus-sized vintage dress I've ever seen, I either can't find decent plus-sized vintage clothes or if I do, they look very ugly. That reason alone is enough to keep me flying away to Dovetail!! read more

So, while walking to West Fest I stopped into this establishment with a friend, we walked around for at least 5 minutes looking at items in this small storefront and were never acknowledged by the owner or employee, not sure. I purchased a $35 leather purse from Dovetail, only to have it stain several articles of my clothing by what I believe to be shoe polish applied to the purse to make it appear more marketable. These stains are not coming out, and unfortunately it stained a skirt that a dear friend made for me. Upon calling the store hoping to receive some sort of compensation, Julie (a co-founder of the store, I believe) was very unsympathetic, basically telling me "tough luck" and "buyer beware." It saddens me that one of the owners had this attitude when their employees are so kind. The day I bought the purse, the sales associate was very sweet and conversational. However, it appears that the powers in charge are not so attuned to customer service. Save yourself the trouble and don't shop there. Julie and her partner, Jennifer have done a lovely job of collecting vintage designer goods and showcasing their own and local artists work. Love this place. I'm actually not a hipster nor do I pretend to know anything about vintage clothing--but this place is superb for adding a little funk to your simple wardrobe. I tend to wear solids and accessorize--and this is a great place for that. I recently purchased a navy top with a very cool horizontal hem on the bottom. The sales woman--who I think is also the owner--knew what she was talking about and explained how this shirt would look with jeans or a pencil skirt. I also purchased a camel colored bubble skirt (from a local designer) and a red belt to match. I threw on a plain white tank, as was suggested by the owner, and received many compliments. You know that some of the items you pick up here won't be on every street corner. In general, I would say they have a lot of really fun and funky, interesting things so I enjoyed perusing this spot. FIrst, I would give this store three dollar signs in terms of cost (when it comes to thrift stores). Second, I found a number of absolutely beautiful vintage rings that I wanted from Dovetail. After much debate (because they were expensive), and after hearing how they find them from estate sales and many have never even been worn, I purchased two that I really liked. Together, they totaled about $80. Not even three wears later, the one suddenly broke in half while I was casually gesturing in a conversation one day. (It had a knitted gold topper that just fell off and I found dried super glue on both sides). Then the other turn into tin because all the gold "spray paint" or whatever it was wore off. I lost the receipt and now I just have two junk rings sitting in my jewelry box :(. My advice, do an extra inspection of any merchandise you find here, and think twice about the price. read more

I love Dovetail so much. Just popped in after lunch at Flo & I swear, I could just live in there. The jewelry selection alone blows me away! The music is always great & everyone's so nice. I remember when I first found Dovetail, I was looking for chairs & the owners emailed me photos of other stuff they had in storage. They're awesome. I always feel they have the perfect cherry-picked vintage things & don't overcrowd the shop like so many places. I live across the street from dovetail, and frequent the store pretty often. I like the fact that they don't try to over sell anything. Most times when I walk into a store, I feel like the saleswomen are tracking me, hounding me, and are often insincere about suggestions. YOU ALL KNOW THIS HAPPENS! DON"T DENY IT! These ladies let you take your time, and often DO give good suggestions, just when you need it. They aren't at all pushy or condescending. (*note: if you're a shopper who needs extra help while shopping, they are more than willing to personal shop. Just ask.) There's no need to riffle through rack upon rack of pitt-stained, over worn, beat up thrift store clothing, just to find the perfect outfit..... because the ladies who run this store have done it for you. Everything in this store is in mint condition. They have pulled some of the most gorgeous items! Dresses, shoes, accessories, mens wear, home goods and more. And if they don't have it, they'll find it for you. I recently purchased a beautiful vintage gold locket for a wedding gift, and my friend loved it. and the other girls were jealous of it. HA! I also bought a pair of brown lace up ankle boots (late 20's early 30's era??) for myself, that EVERYONE loves, and stops me over. I love owls, and I have purchased the most adorable owl necklaces from this store. They know what I like, and they send emails to inform me of when they get new owl stuff. They pay attention to what this customer likes.... and i like that. I almost forgot to mention the sales. Usually they have some sort of sale going on when you stop in.. most recently, they had a vase full of daisies with tag's on them at the cash wrap.. When I was done shopping, and ready to pay, I got to pick one of the dasies, and they took off a percentage of my total purchase. I got a 10% off, but the woman ahead of me got 50%! i clearly love dovetail. Go and see for yourself. *Note that they do art openings/parties on at least one friday a month... show casing up and coming local artists.
