The staff are always super nice and they are very honest (which is so hard to find these days). The shop is clean and they have nice waiting area too. The service is great and they don't need all day for a simple oil change. They will be honest with you should you be in need of an air filter, etc., but don't push or try to upsell you. I asked for a rough quote over the phone for a repair to my jeep. After dropping it off and getting a firm quote the next morning, it was 45% higher. I had other quotes and I would not have taken it to Dowdy's knowing it would be that high. I also told them exactly what the issue was but they wanted to charge me an inspection fee. Anyway, after a heated argument, I did not pay the inspection fee and they took me off "their" list. Which is funny, because I have been put on a lot of lists, but never taken off one. Took our diesel truck in about a year ago to Meridian Dowdys off Overland with an oil leak. this 250 Ford has been babied to death but as I said there was an oil leak. They took it in as we know whats wrong and will fix it. $3500.00 and come pick her up. My husband drove into our driveway with oil leaking ALL OVER all the way up to the garage. Not only was the oil still leaking but it was OVERFULL! My husband called and took in back in. They said "It will take another $6000.00 because of other leaks!!!! My husband passed during this time and my grandson asked them to take another look at it. they again said they did not know why it was over full but again it would be Another 6000.00. When you get a text from a service provider asking you to consider leaving a "FIVE STAR" review, something does not feel right. That about sums up my experience with Dowdy's on Federal. We were on vacation, with Boise as our first stop. In Nampa, the brakes became very, very stiff and hard to push the pedal. We limped into Boise, and tried to call the only dealer in town to take the car in. After 3 hours (2 calls and 1 text) without a response from the dealer, we contacted Dowdy's, based on a relative's old recommendation and their slew of "FIVE STAR" reviews. They were able to get us in before they closed on Tuesday, and we made arrangements for them to fix the brakes while we finished our trip in a rental. On Wednesday, they called with the results of the diagnostics. We were on I-15 in Salt Lake, so were kind of at the mercy of the traffic gods. They told us there was NO OIL IN THE ENGINE, although there had been no oil warning lights, and 10 minutes before we dropped the car off, oil pressure was between 36 and 42 psi (can anyone explain how no oil can create 36 psi of pressure at idle?). Their recommendation was a Motor Flush ($324.42). They did the flush, then informed us they could not do anything on the brakes, as "they didn't have the tools". By now we were in Denver, the car (un-drivable) is in Boise, and Dowdy's says it's up to us to get the car to someplace that could fix the brakes. We found a dealer that would help, swung back through Boise, picked up the car, drove the car very carefully to Nampa (with wonky brakes in Boise traffic, the sight of the "This Lane Must Exit" signs along I-84 still make my stomach churn). Some of this is on me. I did not verify there was oil, just normal oil pressure levels and behavior. I did not verify Dowdy's could actually perform the work needed to get the car in running order. Well, this will be a different type of review. I don't live near a Dowdy's, but the person I was buying an old VW from does. He is in the Meridian area and picked that Dowdy's location for me and made an appointment to have the car gone over for some basic things for the day I could be in town to see his (now my) car. I'm not a mechanic but comfortable with old VW's and the basic things. The entire crew was great! I had a little time to hang out and wait for the appointed time. I just worked in their waiting area while...well, waiting; and got to see a few customers come and go and come in for setting appointments and such. That showed me that they were a detail and customer-oriented shop and that made me happy. Then it was my turn to have a 1969 Squareback checked over. They did a great job, charged a fair price and had great comments, advice and feedback. I was 100% satisfied with the visit and the results. Given past experiences with mechanics, I was ecstatic to have found a professional and honest place to service my mother and I's cars, given that they are older cars that constantly need maintenance and repairs. Whenever I brought in my car, I was always blown away with the great customer service I was treated by Dowdy's (specifically Harrison). I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to cars so I always asked lots of questions. Harrison always explained in ways I could understand: the breakdown of costs, the parts involved and how they work together, etc. Because of this, my mother started to bring her car in as well. We were always treated with a great level of patience and friendliness. But this didn't last long. On January 4th, we brought in my mother's car because the engine light turned on due to a misfire on cylinder 1. They had it checked and Harrison said that they verified the light and asked us when was the last time we replaced the spark plugs because they looked worn. The technician recommended replacing them. My mother agreed to proceed and paid $447.73 for all 8 spark plugs to be replaced. As my mother was paying, she had a bad feeling about the service not being completed but chose to ignore it because all of the experiences prior were great. On January 8th, the engine light turned back on. We wondered why the engine light would turn back on so quickly. Since my mother had a bad hunch about the service not being done, she took it to a friend who is a mechanic to look at it. Our friend, who took the images I included in this review, confirmed that the spark plugs were not replaced. On January 21, we went in to ask questions regarding the matter. The minute we walked in and before saying anything we noticed the drastic change in Harrison's attitude. I made it clear from the beginning that I just wanted to ask a few questions about the service done; I didn't want to argue. When I showed him the images attached and asked him how they weren't any fingerprints or signs of the ignition coils being touched, he explained that the technicians wear gloves. I then said that I still believed it would leave marks with gloves. He became extremely defensive and slightly raised his voice and said that we were accusing them of being liars etc. I clarified that we weren't accusing them but simply wanted to ask questions. He said that their services have no guarantee and the only thing he offered was a free diagnostic since the light was on. They gave us an appointment but we chose not to attend. I am incredibly let down in Harrison's change of attitude before we even had a chance to discuss and his using an angry tone with me. We suggest that people who know as little of cars as we do check the work before leaving the facility. read more

Can't say enough good about the service there. I took my car in for an oil change and tire rotation before a road trip. I had my two little kids with me while we waited. The kind men there acknowledge I had my kids, had coloring books and crayons, Netflix for my toddler, and even brought out a new Hotwheels car for him while we waited. When I moved here for a new position my car quit working. It was a 2005 Hyundai Elentra with 200,000 miles on it. They didn't make me feel like a loser for driving old car, in fact they found things that didn't have to be replaced while redoing electrical wiring that rodents had chewed through saving me money. I would never return to this place. I usually go to Christian Brothers, but unfortunately, they were too busy to get me in. Little did I know that Dowdy's would have my car for a week and a half, and to get updated, I had to call daily to find out what was going on, since it was supposed to be done the next day. It has been many years since I needed my AC fixed, but I figured it'd be $6 - $800, maybe a $1,000. Guy said my compressor needed replaced @ $1,300. Sounded like a lot, but I thought gotta get it done. He also said that he could fix the fan issue that I had. Now the cost was $1,800. I call in the next day, and the tech says they can't get some part off, because the line is too corroded, so they are going to cut it off and replace the line. Next day, they had the wrong part delivered. Said they were going to get the part overnighted. It was 3 more days before the car was done. I called in again to speak with the tech, and he told me the cost would be over $2,800!! Obviously, I was shocked, and I told him that if I knew it was going to cost 3 grand to fix my AC on a 2006 GMC Envoy, I would have sold it and bought a new car! On Friday, I called Dowdy's kinda of last minute as I had to get a cooling system flush on my daughters car, before the weather changed. I had a few recommendation's, but none of them were open on Saturday. I explained my situation to Brandon on the phone, and he fit me in. He said it would be done before closing. They had to flush the system 5 times, to get the junk out. It was bad. This was above and beyond what I expected. I will give Dowdy's Automotive my business for the rest of my car owning life in South Meridian, Idaho! I moved here about 2 weeks ago and within the first 5 days of me living here my car started having MAJOR issues. I had the car towed to Dowdys where Dan met me at the counter and spent his time listening to me do my "woman explaining" of what I think is wrong with my car. He was so patient. They did a diagnostic and found out that the major problem with the car (transmission) needed some repair work, I needed new brakes, and a power steering pump. Before doing the brakes and pump they sent me to a recommended transmission repair shop. After getting the car back from the transmission place, I went straight back to Dowdys to get the rest of the repairs done. I was so pleased with their work. I would highly recommend Dowdy for all your auto needs. Scheduling an appointment was quick and easy. My 2014 Toyota Corolla needed an oil change and some maintenance check ups. Spoke with Tyler at the shop who patiently and kindly explained everything to me and even suggested me other places/ways/tips/tricks to save money on my vehicle. Turns out they have couple of Toyota specialists there who worked on my car. The turn around time for everything was about 1.5 hrs, which is what they had estimated to me. I've taken my 2000 Toyota Tundra into Dowdy's multiple times and had a good experience each time. Recently the battery went dead, I replaced it and within 1 day the new battery went dead. I took it back to an auto parts store and they told me the alternator was bad. I then took the truck over to Dowdy's and talked to Stu. He advised me to go back over to the auto parts store and replace the battery connectors and splicer cables myself before I spent $100's of dollars on replacing the alternator. I did that, it cost me less than $30 and 30 minutes of my time. I then had the auto parts store check the alternator again and it was in great shape. Basically Stu saved me $500-$800 and did the "right thing" and cost himself a little business in the short term. It is hard to find a mechanic who will give you your best options rather than dig in and start charging you for services that may not be needed. Dowdy's has definitely got my business moving forward. The front desk guy was a flippant jackass. "Hi, I'm calling to check in on my car?" Him: "Let me go see ...... the wires are melted" silence....Me: "Ummm ok, so?" Silence..... Me: "So the wires in the door are melted?" Him: "No the wires under the seat." Silence.... Me: "Ok, how did that happen?" Him angry and talking really fast: "I don't know! You are texting me right when he is looking at it and your car is like 20 years old, it's Not New and I don't even know where to get a part for it. I mean they maybe made 20 spare wiring parts for that car and I doubt I'll be able to find one." Silence..... Me:"Ummm, ok so.... should I come get my car then?" Him: "Yeah you can totally do that and YOU can help us search for the part. Then let us know if you ever find it. You will need to go hunt junk yards. Maybe you will find one in NewYork and you can have them mail it to you. I mean I guess I could call around." Silence....... Me: "Ok, I'll let you do what you need to do then when you have more information just call me back." Him:"Ok bye". FIRST of all my car is 6 years old. SECOND of all HIS JOB IS TO FIX OLD CARS THAT ARE BROKEN and know where to get parts. THIRD, If I wanted to fix the car myself and hunt around junk yards I wouldn't have brought my car to a mechanic. FOURTH, my car is one of the Easiest cars to find parts for and I researched parts Before I took my car in and found that the wiring harness is at any auto parts place in town. FIFTH, I'm 100% sure that if I was a man that guy NEVER would have talked to me like that and treated me like that.
