Hmm. Booze nerd mini-heaven? Sure! *They've got boutique-y bourbons and a serious sake selection and a nice/relatively extensive mix of old and new world wines and an impressive collection of craft beers. *for their size, which is pretty freaking small Okay. So not every wine/spirit dealer can be a warehouse of booze. (Not necessary, but fun!) It's actually (and I speak from experience) almost more difficult to create a comprehensive and well rounded collection of great beer/wine/spirits when you're limited, spatially speaking. Each selection has to be that much more thoughtful, and that much more impressive. Each selection fills a niche. "What's the most affordable, standard, easy-drinking and accessible yet boutique-y bourbon I can find?" "Four Roses. Done." So Downer does this pretty dang well. There are a few things that I wish they carried that they don't, but on the whole, this little liquor retailer does a pretty awesome job.

My latest find at Downer Wine & Spirits, it was delicious by the way.

It's amazing that a store this small, in this neighborhood, can have such a ranged selection and competitive prices.

Edit/update... Konig Pils is a German beer, not Polish, and highly recommended by a guy I know, who likes beer.

The staff is knowledgeable if you ask them, but they leave you alone if you don't ask for help. That's good and bad, because they never suggest or up-sell. I've asked about the same bourbon on every visit and no one has ever offered to put me on a wait list. Other shops would have seized the opportunity. The prices are competitive and the sales prices are excellent. The cameras and security guards are not welcoming and somewhat put a damper on the shopping experience.

Wait what, I've never reviewed this location yet have been shopping here for about a decade?!…read more To be fair, I am usually getting the same things BUT they have good prices (sales often) for what I buy and lots of options if you want a selection. I'm not sure of the rules around this, but they will possibly order you something special if you request it and buy a case or if they see it as a possible selling item. The store is employee owned and it seems they don't have much turnover with employees which is a good sign. Another bonus? Covered parking which is nice in inclement weather and just because no one wants to find street parking. Sometimes the lot can be busy at peak hours but they get people in and out quickly. Remember to pull up as close as possible to the wall or people can't get through. They also have security guards at night for sure, mostly because of thefts in the past but I've never seen anything weird happen when shopping. Ott's on Oakland is most certainly my go to liquor store because they have the best prices and selection combined in the area.

Total Wine, we're friends again! Please see my initial…read morereview below. 1-4 positive remarks. No negatives. Of course we went to Total Wine for another wine tasting. Why??? because, well... I love wine and want my husband to love it too! After my last review, I emailed Total Wine as requested by their Yelp page which you'll see. They even called me back, but I missed the call. The voicemail was nice. Let's be honest though,I wasn't about to call them back. They heard my concerns. No need for me repeat said concerns. I mean if they were offering a free class or gift card this would have been me "Yes, I'm returning a call..." LOL! Friends, y'all get it! This time around, my experience was amazing! 1. Stone was knowledgeable and answered several questions. 2. Were there watermarks on the glasses? NOPE! 3. The pours were more sanitary too! Brenden hovered above the glass (no more accidental contact!). 4. The class wasn't overly packed! Likely because it was a weekday. Either way, I'll take it! I know they'll still pack the classes because...let's keep it a buck they're a business. I'll lean towards weekday classes or come as a party of four. I love when companies actually listen and make changes. That type of action Makes me feel all smiley and stuff! Wait, friends....maybe that's just the wine. Total Wine, we'll be back for more sniffs, swirls, sips, and knowledgeable instructorsp! Thank you!!

Total Wine has a great selection of items. They carry just about anything you could want…read more They generally have impressive tastings that are really educational if you get the right employee doing them. The pre-order and parking lot pick-up option is a great time saver. This is especially important, because this is the area where Total Wine struggles - there are never, ever enough people working the registers and the lines to check out almost always suck. If they could be a little more mindful of that up front, they'd be a five star store.

Oh, you don't know about Corner Liquors?…read more It's by 4 bus stops on Holton & Burleigh. It's across from the cash only gas station that you don't want to go to...that's cool...I'll go. GIVE ME ALL THE SHADY CASH ONLY BUSINESS DUKEDOMS. I can empathize with the trepidation some may feel when contemplating a visit to an establishment like Corner Liquors. Let me tell you, this place is better than you might expect. It is VERY clean and organized. I cannot say the same about the typical clientele. Yes, the entire counter area is encased in a plastic/glass type tank cage that doesn't look like it could stop a bullet. Yes, it's basically a boozed up convenience store. But this one is cleaner than most & has solid employees. I use this place to grab emergency beer if I don't want anything special. They carry just about any mass produced domestic beer you can imagine. However, you won't see many craft beers. They seem to sell a lot of cigarettes & chips. Plus, you can find any denomination of booze bottle. Once, I held an 18 pack of High Life & a 12 pack of cider & waited behind a woman who asked about the prices of the tiny airline ready bottles of liquor. She asked & asked. The worker patiently informed her of each price & counted the woman's change as she paid for each individually. With change. Coins. How much is that? *Counts out change* How much is that? *Counts out change* Ad nauseam. She was going to seize that Friday night. The owners / operators are very friendly & mean business. They opened an additional cash register so that I didn't have to wait for the madness to subside. Get in. Get out. Get drunk on an armload of fun sized bottles of booze you bought after smashing your kid's piggy bank. Aren't all bottles of alcohol fun sized?
