This is a great place to relax and go away from the world. But it is hard to find because it is hidden well

I wanted to get some sun and get a swim in. When I showed up, I gave $4 to the cashier and entered the pool area through the bronze metal gate. I went straight to the changing stalls to strip off my street clothes and get into my swimwear. I left my bag with the bag attendant and in exchange, he gave me a pin with a number on it. The lap lanes were pretty empty at 4pm on a Wednesday. There was some sun in my lane but lots of it was shady. I think the pool gets lots is shade even when it's at the peak of the day, which is really good if you don't want to get boiled during your swim. The pool itself was okay. A little cloudy and very shallow at one end of my lane. There was a large timing clock (analog) which I used to time my workout. The thing about this pool that I think is interesting is that it's very no-frills. There are no locker rooms or changing rooms - just stalls for everyone and outdoor showers for everyone. There are also coed bathrooms. If you're the type of person that likes to get naked in the shower and really clean yourself well and then change, maybe this pool isn't for you. It's more for the folk who like to rinse off at the pool and then shower at home. I think that's really important to note. Another note is that they have pool equipment open for use including pull buoys, kickboards, fins and hand paddles. So cool! I'd come here again for a relaxing swim and if I didn't need to be anywhere afterwards. It's pretty cheap and the lifeguards are nice. Parking is plenty. There is a huge lot!!

They felt they can change the schedule with the whole staff in on it. At 4:45pm Lifeguards and staff announcing that the pool is closed. By 4:56pm, the lifeguard on deck at that time stops me to kick me out of the water. I checked my watch and I said it's 4:57pm. The lifeguards checked his watched and said it' was 4:59pm, a flat lie. As this rude lifeguard stands over my hear, I hear a female swimmer complaining that the female clerk was yelling at her to get out because the pool is closed. I saw the lady check watch is was 4:57pm and confirmed that is is 4:57pm . So, I get out at 5:00pm, the deck guard, standing over my lane almost in my way of getting out. The lady and spoke and I suggested a Yelp review, because the staff decided to close early because the manager was not in today. The lifeguard and clerk were rude to us and already had mentally had checked out. So, I'm wondering to myself who decided to kick the patrons out early because to close a pool early you need a good reason. Anyways, I hope the managers reads this and corrects the error of these closing staff members.

Over the last few months, I visited several times, and each time there was a young employee named Vardges who consistently went above and beyond. He was incredibly helpful, patient, and genuinely kind -- the sort of person who doesn't just do his job well but quietly elevates the entire atmosphere around him. What stood out most was the way he interacted with my young daughter. His patience and warmth toward her were sincere and unwavering, and that kind of care stays with a parent. It certainly stayed with me. People like Vardges make a real difference in their community, often without realizing it. I truly hope he gets the recognition he deserves. Thank you, Vardges, for setting such a wonderful example and for making every visit better than the last.

What was frustrating is that we were not allowed to enter the pool at all, and they didn't even offer us the option to join the class instead. We are local residents and cannot easily come back at another time, so this was very inconvenient. If the schedule changes, it should be clearly updated so people don't waste their time coming here. Very poor communication and customer service. And baby cried all morning because I promised him to go there.

As usual, water in the room costs money, and there are a few other products with hidden price tags in the room, too. Surprisingly, toothbrush and toothpaste was not provided. The water for showering also doesn't get too hot. In terms of the athletic space, the machines were very easy to access. There was never a wait even on weekend afternoons. The lap pool was my favorite part - clean and calm. There was some miscommunication between the lobby and the store, as one said there is no reservation system but there in fact was. But even when told all the lanes were fully reserved, more than half weren't in use. Parking is a bit of a hassle; for non-members it's definitely not worth it. At the time of visit, the parking machine wasn't working. There are also sperate elevators for parking vs the athletic club / hotel area which was a little confusing. The stair numbers also didn't coordinate the best with actual level.

That itself gives this historic structure a miraculous feel because it survived desegregation in an apartheid state that still tries to hide/deny its ugly white supremacism. Nonetheless, the racist, capitalist model of diminishing public infrastructure because they provide benefit to non-whites equally, prevails. The changing rooms are a shambles. Ironically, in many poorer nations where I have used municipal pools, they have smarter, more updated locker rooms. (This reveals the character of what passes for national culture.) Enough now with the disparagement and let's pivot to this historic pool. The length is perhaps Olympic size but the deep end of the pool is in the middle. It's cordoned off into three sections across, allowing a lap swimmer to benefit from the deepest central third, although it is not a full 25 yards across. The water is much clearer than in Glassell Park and perhaps it's because it is not as heavily used? I found there's a solid jet stream of pumped water underneath leading to a kind of "rip tide" effect in the pool. You have to work harder to get across because of the undercurrent. It's quite enjoyable. The lack of trees around this pool makes the sun feel harsh, but the nearby Gold line train gives it a feeling of being part of a vibrant metro region. As well I was smelling street tacos from a nearby truck, very aromatic I was delighted to find this pool during one of the extended brutal heat waves of triple digit temperatures that are commonplace now thanks to climate change. However, consistent with the history of white colonizers being callous about the welfare of non-white citizens, and overriding the unique realities of western geography in favor of conformity with norms from the northeast, the City of LA Parks and Recreation department feels the need to shut down pools like this one during LA's *hottest months* of September and October. In other words, yes, the City of LA would rather people of this area suffer the heat than keep this pool open to allow for some respite for vulnerable human bodies. LA's hottest months are always September and October. City of LA Parks and Recreation: We don't care. Finally, note there is limited parking in a lot which exits into a mega-dip in the street side curb that will crack most sedans' chassis... Call 818-804-7570 about hours.

When Dodger Stadium is behind you and you face the mountain, start counterclockwise--trust me, you'll thank me. On the way back, you'll enjoy a gorgeous downtown view. At the top, there's a painted seating area where you can rest and soak it all in. A couple of things that could be better: It's a dirt/sand path, so wear shoes you don't mind getting dusty--unless you want to spend each day cleaning them. It's usually around 6,000 steps for me--though that varies--and roughly 400 calories burned (but don't quote me on that!). Overall, it's about a 45-minute hike/jog with ups and downs--just enough to get your heart going, and then you can treat yourself to a city-state after. Pretty good overall--highly recommend it!
