This park is cool and all but the same damm people are always hogging up the pickleball court's reserving the courts every day of the week from Monday to Friday. I found this place through the City of Downey's community programs. I wanted to start my 11 year old daughter in Tennis and thought what a great way to begin. The price was reasonable and the center is close to where I live. What a lucky break for us, a quality coach (Randy Ignacio) running a quality program! Randy is knowledgeable, skillful, patient, and personable. He is able to push my daughter to do well and she has fun at the same time. He is able to evaluate the skill of each kid and adjust his teaching technique to get the best out of them. He's very friendly and gets to know you as a person instead of just a student. Randy coaches with the intent of making you love the sport, and appreciating it. Being a coach for a high school team I had the privilege of having Coach Randy instruct my students. He made the lesson with the students very enjoyable, memorable, and very productive. With only one lesson my students are constantly using what they've learned in all of their matches. I took a private lesson with Randy to help with my tennis game. I've been playing for several years now, but there were some inconsistencies with my backhand as well as my accuracy. Fast forward 3-4 years as I am in college and continuing playing tennis, I notice my level was not improving so I sought Randy out again to find out that he starting coaching at this tennis center, and asked him for a lesson. It's about time that the Downey Tennis Center at Independence Park had a resident instructor. The Downey Tennis Center itself is one of the best public tennis centers that I've seen. They're not only well-maintained (regularly cleaned and resurfaced), but the lights are miles ahead of lighting I've seen at any public park in Northern or Southern California. They look like the lighting used at Indian Wells (except that the Indian Wells main stadiums have probably four times more lighting fixtures per lighting standard), and light the courts brightly and evenly without glare. The only downside I've seen is that two gates that would allow players to access the far courts without intruding on the nearer courts are kept locked. The Downey Tennis Center's resident instructor, Randy Ignacio, is likewise excellent. Despite his relative youth, he's been teaching tennis for a decade. He knows how and what to teach, he communicates well, and he has a passion for getting people to play good tennis. After just one class with Randy, my wife understood more about how to execute her groundstrokes than she did after several months of classes at our former residence in NorCal. All phases of my (intermediate) tennis game have improved in consistency and execution under Randy's tutelage as well. (Now, if I could only get more time on the court...) All in all, Randy Ignacio and the Downey Tennis Center are a winning combination. read more

His methods of training are very unique and he's able to make learning how to play tennis a really enjoyable time! Randy is one of the best coaches that I've ever had! He really caters his coaching to the skill level that you are at and develops you from there. I went from winning zero (yes, zero) games to winning a majority of my games against high school varsity girls. I have not taken tennis lessons from Randy Ignacio at the Downey Tennis Center but from my experience as his former tennis student he helped me be more confident in myself. Not only did he help me develop better shots but also took the time outside of tennis practice to teach me how to live a healthier lifestyle.
