I knew nothing about replacing locks in my new home so I called Downs Locksmith and worked with Hanna. She was so helpful. I got a course in Home Locks 101. I felt very informed and comfortable with my decisions because of how helpful Hannah was to me. She even helped me with the color of the hardware. Who knew? I thought looks were all shiny brass. Not so. I know have sharp mat black hardware in my new home and it's just perfect. On the day of installation of all my locks, the installers were professional and knew their stuff. Horrible and costly commercial installation experience from the entire team. We used Downs on a commercial property in Atlanta before. This time we requested two commercial lock installs and asked to schedule the install on a day when we are at the property every week. I get a call that the technician is on the way on a day that I was not at the property and had to move around my schedule to accommodate. The owner of Downs and a technician "double teamed" this install by having to go to the property multiple times because the new key cores were forgotten, or the exterior doors didn't latch properly after their attempts to install. They also had to bug the tenants for batteries to the Electonic locks being installed. Overall, it took about 5 separate trips and days for the 2 locks to function properly. Was never given the amster keys to the key cores. It was also trouble working with the owner and dispatcher to make sure they were paid and took multiple attempts via email and phone call to pay the invoice. About a week or two after the install, both electronic locks failed again (one of the handles literally popped off into a tenants hands). At this point we called another locksmith that came out on the day we requested and basically had to redo the entire install with new key cores. The new locksmith remarked on how poorly installed these locks were. We will not be using Downs in the future. read more

I was referred here for post office box key duplication by Home Depot. It's extremely difficult to find a real storefront for locksmiths these days, as most locksmiths are the mobile variety. I prefer to do my business with someone who has a storefront, and if I have a problem, I can return easily enough. Try getting a mobile guy to return to fix his problem!! Anyway, key duplication is of course a easy issue for Downs, yet they have a large staff of locksmiths to handle almost anything. They have a large selection of safes on the floor, so they actually carry inventory, a nice plus. read more

We had used Downs for years at our old home for most installations. When Lowe's and Home Depot cannot make these two keys that are more challenging, the first locksmith cams to mind was Downs. When i walked in today, a gentleman was at the counter making keys. There was no customer service, no greetings or hellos. I waited for 5 minutes while he was using the machine, and a female voice came out from the back, "what you need?" I said good afternoon and showed her the keys. She took a look and laughed that they don't make these kind of keys anymore. "Get a new lock." I was shocked at the type of response, and more importantly how she responded. Well, I guess I will be taking my business somewhere else in the future because they simply did not care about who they are working with, the history, and basic customer service when we drove across town just to get this treatment. read more

After signing the contact and becoming an official homeowner, I was suddenly struck by reality: I don't know who's been in this house before me. It was flipped, so it had a ton of contractors in and out of there for months. I don't know who may have a key to the place... and I planned on sleeping there! In the morning I called Down's. They are just around the corner from me and were able to schedule an appointment to have someone come out when I was available. The technician came out, on time, and we talked about different options. I needed two new deadbolts (one where there wasn't one before), and SOMETHING for one other door. After going over options of lock-types, we talked about the finish. All the door handles in my home are a particular finish that most people don't stock. They were able to order what I needed in the finish that I wanted and come back out a few days later. The tech worked quickly, putting in the locks - making sure everything was aligned and worked properly. He was able to key all the locks to work from the same key. He went to his truck and made me all the copies I needed in my driveway. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone who needs new locks, or current locks re-keyed, or more locks on the doors you have. They were completely fantastic. Yelp, you have done it again! Thanks for a great referral to a quality service provider nearby my home. I was having different types of trouble with 2 exterior deadbolt locks and needed service asap. When I called Downs and explained the issue, they promised to send the locksmith the same day and even agreed that while my service window was technically 12-5, when I explained I had a meeting at work that could not be rearranged which would last until 2:30, so the earliest possible time I could be home was 3:15, this was no problem. They even estimated that the service would be able to be accomplished within the 1/2 hour min trip charge window for $125. They called to confirm, I headed home and the locksmith arrived a short while later. He was efficient and also showed me what was causing the issues as he discovered them, but kept working quickly in order to stay within the estimated 1/2 hour of service time. All fixed and cleaned up within 30 minutes! Hooray! A hearty recommendation for Downs if you need service in the Morningside, Lindbergh, Buckhead or Brookhaven areas. read more

I lost the keys to my car, which is ultra annoying, but even more frustrating when I learned that my key had a chip it in that was programmed to the computer in my car ($130+ to replace a single key!) After searching the web and talking to a dealership, it seemed my option was going to be to have my car towed to the dealership where they could fabricate a new key from my car's locks and then use their software to program it. Not awesome. Even less awesome - my battery was completely dead and I Could Not get the damn terminals off of the battery posts to take it somewhere to have it charged. So how exactly was I going to start my car to jump it off without a key? And how were they going to program the key when my battery was too dead to engage the computer in the car? I started calling locksmiths to see if there was anything that could be done. As usual, Yelp directed me to a good option and, thankfully, Downs proved to be worth more than 5 stars. The dispatcher was super friendly and informative; the technician Jose, who came to my house within an hour from first calling Downs, was extremely professional and charged my battery while making and programming a new key. Aaaand he was finished with everything in 20 minutes! The price was firm - there was no "okay, here is the quote but when the technician finishes we're actually going to say that it was a difficult job and charge $75 more than your original quote." No surprises. Just solid customer service from the first phone call to Jose's goodbye wave as he pulled out of my parking garage. Oh and they honored the 5% Yelp discount as well. read more

definitely a high quality shop and worth the significantly higher price versus Home Depot, especially if your locks are higher quality and/or require some skill. I have German made locks and initially took them to Home Depot and of the 3 locks the first HomeDepot Locksmith had never seen or heard of CES locks; the second guy played with them all afternoon and lost the pins to one, broke the second lock, and got one to work but it was very difficult to turn. Fortunately, I ended up at Downs. the cost was much higher and the service was unfriendly (though not rude, just mechanical) but the locksmith was clearly very skilled and within 15 minutes fixed the broken lock, replaced the missing pieces, and my locks work incredibly smooth. plus, the fresh cut keys were brushed and polished with not sharp edges compared to Home Depot keys that have jagged edges that often times I've had to giggle to get a key to work. Thanks Yelpers for the recommendation- I needed a post office mailbox re-keyed and a deadbolt installed. The locksmith came toward the end of the scheduled time window, worked quickly, and got me the locks and keys I needed. The service call charge took up the largest chunk of the final bill, but worth it, as the locksmith was friendly, efficient, and got what I needed done. Service calls are 8-5 during the week, otherwise, it's time and a half for the weekend. I forgot to ask for the 5% Yelp discount when it came time for me to pay up though :( read more

Ive used Downs Safe and Lock for many years and referred countless customers to their company. They have had keys that others dont carry. Ive always noticed a bad attitude by the workers there but today arriving at 355 and they close at 4. 2 ladies walked out and said technically we are closed, other looked away all with negative attitudes almost vitriole. Ill be looking for another company that appreciates my business and the customers I send them. No room in retail business for bad customer service, especially when most would drive 15 to 30 minutes to get here. read more

Had issues with a front-door deadbolt lock; I had called what proved to be a disreputable locksmith who charged me more than he should have, and within three months the lock didn't work. Furthermore, I called his number and it was no longer in service. This time I called Downs, and had a fantastic experience, from start to finish. Jessica, who handles dispatch, listened patiently to me as I described my irregular work schedule, and despite that challenge, got a locksmith out to me on the same day (no expedite fee). And the locksmith, Scotty, was absolutely the greatest. He showed me what the scam artist had done to my lock, and then quickly made the repair, for much less than I had been charged by the crooks. My early 1900's door knob system was totally jammed up and had been that way for a while. I called on a Tuesday and they were able to send someone out first thing Wednesday morning. He was able to figure out the issue (broken spindle) and fix it and was all done in about 20 mins. Would definitely recommend! The basic visit fee covered what I needed done. read more

Horrible. They only do scheduling in a 4 hour window like the cable company which doesn't really work for a working person a week day. The girl who answers the phone and books appointments is possible the rudest person I've ever dealt with anywhere. I called another locksmith (Berkeley) and they answered my call, and scheduled a same day appointment at a specific time that worked better for my schedule. My 3 point Peachtree Door patio door lock was broken. I was afraid I'd have to replace the entire 3 point mechanism and possibly the whole door. Called Downs at 8 am, their representative arrived by 10AM, dismantled the lock mechanism and fixed by replacing a broken spring by noon. The copies they made for me work perfectly. It's been years since I've been able to get a good copy of a key. They normally never work when I get them made at home depot. read more

I have a vintage Vespa scooter which only had one ignition key. I ordered a key blank (from Italy) and took it to a local hardware store to have it cut. The new key didn't work, even after the guy who cut it made some modifications. I ordered another blank and this time took it to Downs where they cut the key which worked like butter. All I needed was my Medeco keys copied, that's all. I was quoted $16 per key and was they would be cut in house. I showed up and was then told they needed to be factory ordered but would be available for pickup in 3-5 days. Annoying, since I needed the keys the same day, but so be it. Two weeks later and still no keys. I call them and they say someone will need to call me back. Two days later I get a call that the keys are ready. Finally! I show up and guess what, now the keys are $18.50 each!? When I protest I am told that there are no "$16" keys, that in store they are just under $15 and those from the factory are $18.50. Only after arguing with two people and playing a voicemail proving they quoted me $16, they finally gave me the keys for $16 each plus a heavy dose of attitude at no extra charge. Guys - I support local businesses anytime I can, and don't care AT ALL about a few dollars. The point I tried to make multiple times in your store is that you have an opportunity to improve communications with your customers. Say what you are going to do and do it. If there is a problem fix it and own it. Simple and easy. read more
