Took my car in for service, I had a list of issues I was worried about. They took my car and handled what I asked for. I asked for something to be checked and it was explained to me that the cost to check it wasn't worth it, as there didn't seem to be a problem. I was impressed that they didn't just do unnecessary work just to charge me. The shop has an honest vibe and was satisfied with the work done and cost to do it. My recent experience I able to get an oil change here the other day. Although they charge much more than what I'm use to (177) I was okay with that. What I'm not okay about is one of my side marker lights went out and brought them a set of bulbs to replace. When I picked up my car, the set of bulbs were just on my dash untouched and didn't even mention we couldn't get to it or nothing. Overall I'm sure they did a good job on my oil change but I won't be coming back as I don't see any value for me. read more

I was a little apprehensive about going here with the new ownership and all but honesty, they are even a little better than the previous ownership. They saved me $700 dollars by actually FIXING something as opposed to just replacing entire assemblies. Thats the mark of an actual mechanic in my opinion. We had taken one of our cars to Mike about a year ago and were very pleased. Fast forward to now and our jeep was leaking oil. We had gotten a really high quote for repairs from another shop in town. My husband stopped by to talk with Mike about what was going on. But instead of Mike, Anthony greeted my husband. He informed my husband Mike had retired and he just purchased the business. Anthony was super helpful to my husband and got us in that week to fix the jeep. Not only did they fix the issue, they stood by their work, pressure washed the residual oil off and delivered the car back to our home since my husband was traveling and I was alone with my two young kids. I noticed some oil drips again after they returned it. Anthony had no hesitations on me bringing it back. They took a look and explained there was some oil left over that was dripping but the issue was resolved. He again cleaned the car and delivered it back to our house at 8am in the morning. This is the place! You know the stress when your car's engine light goes off, 300 miles away. you make it home at 60 miles/hour, there are no available appointments to get it fixed and you have to go back to work the next day 50 miles away. Cherry on top, when you are told you just need to call the dealer and have the engine replaced by a well meaning mechanic... Thanks to Greenwood Chevrolet who could not test our Hyundai Elantra GT and sent us to Mike! What a relief to talk to a positive mechanic who did not put up a fuss to test the car, diagnose the problem, order the part and...fix it within a short time! I am so very impressed with Downtown Automotive! My husband called and spoke with Mike to ask if he was able to replace my fan motor as my air stopped blowing while I was out of town. Mike, without hesitation, ordered the needed parts and said I could bring it in the next business day. When I dropped off my car I met with Mike who was kind and funny - he's a gem! He said my car would be ready in an hour or two and he wasn't kidding. He called to tell me my car was done in just an hour! Sorry this isn't a good review. I didn't think I'd have some many issues after taking my van here. They can't get it right!! I just picked up my van because the dash board lights weren't working. And this is after they said they replaced all my dashboard lights 4 weeks ago. My squeaky belt. Said they replaced with this new stretchy belt that wouldn't squeak. Guess what it still squeaks. Excellent and economical place to have your car repaired. The headlight on my 2010 Subaru Outback went out. I called Mike and he told me to bring it in that morning. I didn't have to wait. Changing the headlight bulb on this model is not an easy task. Mike did it after disassembling parts under the hood to get to the bulb. He then assembled them back together. After the time he spent, his charge was very reasonable and appreciated. He's a wonderful, honest and friendly car mechanic who knows his cars. Called for a starred smog check and they got me in the next morning because when i called it was almost closing time. They were fast and the parking area wasn't too busy, So my child and i were able to run around while we waited only 25 min. He's 1. Anyways they were also affordable. Lemme' tell you somethin', chile, ol' Panochey knows his way around an internal combustion engine. I've rebuilt a couple in my day, so when I say I know about mechanics and the trade, well, I know about mechanics and the trade. There are but two things you need to have in someone wrenchin' on your ride. Thing One: You want the mech to know his @$$ from a hole int he ground and... Thing Two: You want him to be honest. That to me means no 'up-selling' the job, (charging you for more things than you need done). So let me lay it flat out. Mike Torres has forgotten more about cars and trucks than I'll ever know. You can tell that someone is that way when if when he tells you he doesn't know, well, he doesn't know. But that ain't often. If Mike says it needs to be done, it needs to be done. He is not trying to yank your drive chain, if ya' know what I mean. Second, Mike Torres is the singularly most honest mechanic I have ever met. Mike doesn't need to soak you, trust me when I say it, he's got plenty of business without trying to 'maximize' his sale with you. Mike is a righteous, hard-working, straight-shooting man, and I'll lick the mick who says it ain't so. I've known Mike Torres for at least 15 years, from back in the days when Downtown Automotive was actually downtown. Yeah, that far back. And when I need something done to my chariots that a) I cannot or b) will not do for myself, Mike's my man. Downtown Automotive doesn't have the cheapest hourly rate. But again, take my word for it, the guy you have working on your car or truck, you don't want the 'cheapest' guy, you want the most able and talented guy, (so you don't have to pay more to take it to someone else like Mike to fix it right), and in Hollister, the would be Mike Torres and his fine crew at Downtown Automotive. Now please take a moment and as The Arnold says, "Hear me now and listen to me later". If you have NOT been taking care of your ride with regular maintenance and it craps out on you, do not expect Mike, (or any other mechanic), to be able to cure what ails your ride cheaply. Automotive maintenance will always have to be done. The old saying, "Pay for it now or pay for it later" applies here. It WILL have to get paid for. So if you've let your car's care slide, don't expect any pity from a man or woman who is simply making a living repairing vehicles. Postponed maintenance is always, let me repeat that, ALWAYS more expensive than if you'd dealt with the issue when it first came up. So if no one has ever told you this before, be sure to give thanks, (and credit), to ol' Panochey for sheddin' the light for you. But if it does happen and you need your buggy's putt-putt worked on, Mike's Downtown Automotive is the bomb. read more

Called and spoke w a man, told him "I have gotten a quote and list of things wrong w my car and I was wondering if I could get a general quote, to compare prices " I explained to him that I understand it would not be set in stone because he hasn't actually physically seen my car but I just wanted a ballpark quote. His response was literally, and I kid u not word for word, "I really don't want to, probably gonna be close in price"little does he know I'm from San Jose and I was willing to travel all the way to my home town BUT he's so rude and can't take a few minutes out of his day to to his job. I found another nice shop in Hollister that was glad to help me compare prices. Never had my car worked on here but I never will with that kinda attitude on the phone. read more

There was a mis-communication in the price for the entire job (I wasn't aware it was a fee per axle), but the manager (or possibly owner) made it right and only charged me for one axle. I recently moved out of state after living in Hollister for 20 years. I have had a number of vehicles in the past, but currently own a Toyota with 212,000 miles. Due to the types of vehicles I have owned I have worked with many Hollister service depts., but I have also myself worked in a service dept. On recommendation, I took my Toyota to Downtown Automotive for several preventative/routine maintenance needs before moving and driving 2 days/14 hours in extreme heat temps over 3 states. I am happy to write my yelp review from my new state of residence to confirm that not only could I rely on the work that was done to my car, but my car handled the drive beautifully. This was of great concern to me originally given my high mileage and endless possibilities, but I had no problems! I found Mike to be easy to work with, reliable, knowledgeable, and the overall cost was beyond fair and reasonable. The only negative at this point is that he is now located in Hollister which is out of state and too far to be a regular customer. I highly recommend Downtown Automotive! read more

You know that horrible feeling you get when something is wrong with your car and you have no idea what it is ... how to fix it ... or who to trust ??? ("... this is going to be sooo expensive ... and I'm going to get sooo screwed over ...") You don't need to worry about that anymore ... Just go see Mike ... I recently had Bracco's tow my car over to Downtown Automotive while I was at work (they were fast, professional and friendly too...) ... Then I called Mike to let him know it was on it's way ... Mike jumped right on it ... found my problem (not at all what I thought it was) ... and gave me a very fair estimate ... then when the work was done ... the bill matched the estimate (go figure) ... He was so professional and is so skilled that when my son drove me over to pick up my car we decided to leave my son's car (for what we thought was a suspension problem) ... Again Mike quickly diagnosed the problem (not at all what I thought it was) and gave me a fair estimate ... the repair was done quickly (even with a holiday weekend thrown in there) and the bill was right where he said it would be ... He drew us little pictures to explain what had to be done ... He saved the replaced parts to show us where they failed ... and he even explained where similar vehicles tend to fail and what to watch for ...
