While Downtown Barber Shop specializes in men's professional haircuts and shaves, they also style women's hair, and did a great job with mine! Treated myself to an old-school shave and a haircut after being out of town for 33 days. On the way back to Phoenix, I read about 3-dozen Yelp reviews for barber shops and decided on Downtown Barber Shop. This is the first time I've gotten a shave with a straight-razor and I still don't know how in the world he got my face so smooth. The Russian son must have done this a million times, because he was really laid back in his demeanor, but focused in his work, (which is good, because I was nervous). I went in with a specific style in mind. I told Eddie how much hair I wanted cut on the sides, the back and the top. He then proceeded to do something completely different. By the time I realized what was happening it was too late. I told him he was cutting it shorter than I asked and he proceeded to explain to me why what he was doing was better than what I asked for and that he couldn't cut my hair the way I asked because he didn't shampoo it first. It took me 6+ months to get my hair to a certain length and now I have to start over. Frustrating! read more

FANTASTIC! Saw Eddie for the first, but not last, time today. This is a real barber shop. Eddie has a great personality. He made great conversation, not that awkward small talk you get at some shops because the beautician was taught to make small talk. Now onto the real business - the haircut. Again, nothing negative to say here. Eddie did a great job with my hair - it was exactly the style I am accustomed to. More importantly was the beard work. If you are looking for a real beard barber you can find one in Eddie. This is not your typical clipper style beard trim. Eddie spent as much time on my beard as my hair. Eddie and Milda, Eastern bloc immigrants who've owned/run this establishment for fifteen years, are five generations deep barbers. Haircuts are $18 and I will tell you, for the level of detail, that's a steal. Haircuts take 30-45 minutes...they're not there to churn throughput numbers. I travel internationally, Milda cuts the best hair in the U.S., in my opinion. Eddie has a massive loyal following as well. He's known as the beard sculptor/artist.
