I've been going here for 10+ years. Pros: -All the staff members are friendly -Convenient downtown location -Child care for those who have kids -Basketball court. Noon ball daily. -Lap pool with a good amount of free swimming hours -Lots of cardio equipment -Lots of stretching areas (in the back room by the Strive, one in the upper level in cardio room, one in the hallway to the weight room, and two in the weight room) Cons: -Weight room needs improvement. Need better equipment, such as Hammer Strength, Nautilus, or Matrix plate loaded machines. -Quite a few machines, barbells, etc, are older and not maintained properly -Lots of cardio equipment that takes up precious space in the weight room -Not enough free weight space, especially during peak hours read more

visiting from out of state, front desk staff was mockingly condescending to me and my wife. As a lifelong YMCA member (50+yrs) I was shocked and disappointed at the unnecessary comments and unprofessionalism of the staff. our only negative experience of our two week visit to Boise. This is one of the best YMCAs I have been to. While it can be very busy at times, I find it calms down after about 6:30 in the evening and in late mornings and early afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. They have plenty of cardio machines and a wide variety of step, elliptical and sitting machines for people of every fitness level. Most people seem to be respectful of the rules to give up the machines after 30 minutes and to wipe them down afterward, although there's always a few who won't. This facility has two swimming pools, two pool slides and a hot tub. Indoor pools are expensive to build and to maintain, so Boise is fortunate to have such a big aquatics center. I like how the YMCA nationally recently initiated a program that allows you to use any YMCA in the U.S. when you travel. The Treasure Valley Family YMCA already had a policy that allows you to use any of their facilities in West Boise, Caldwell and the new South Meridian facility that will open in May. But it's nice to know you can get in a workout no matter where you are. The men's locker room is spacious and includes showers, a sauna and steam room. Employees come in frequently and keep it clean. I've found most of the Y's employees friendly and helpful. The lifeguards rarely say hello to people as they walk by but they are diligent in keeping a close eye on the children and adults in the pools. read more

The kid zone staff is fantastic at the downtown Y! Every single worker knows my kids names and appears happy to see them when they come in. Susan and Riley go above and beyond with the kids in kid zone. I fully trust all the workers at the downtown Y. They text me when I need to feed my infant and even change his poopy diapers. There is no space to play volleyball and no access to volleyballs. This is such a largely played sport and they should've included a space to play it. They seem to have every other sport except the one that people actually care about. Who even plays racquetball?! Get those outta here and put in some volleyball courts for crying out loud. read more

Ok ok ok- I'm drinking the YMCA koolaid these days. I love my gym, it's classes, the pool/hot-tub, & even the updated coffee shop looks like it got a great improvement! They fixed the slamming door situation outside the Yoga room, which makes for SUCH more peaceful classes! I'm just really enjoying the YMCA community lately & I'm grateful for all they do & offer! This place is nice because they have literally everything you could possible want and the staff is really friendly. For example they have multiple huge pools, a climbing gym, and great child care. I also like there there is no contract which I think is a big deal. What I don't like is it's wayyy to expensive. For the cost you would think it's some super rich luxurious gym, but actually the place is really old, gunky, and dirty. They need to clean this place. I never see any employee cleaning. They also need to remodel. The parking is a complete disaster. It's really hard to find parking at rush hour. Also even thought the place is big there are so many people it's insanely crowed. A lot of the equipment is so close that you are basically almost elbowing people next to you. You have to be careful not to touch, shouldering, or run into people. Sometimes you have to wait for several people to pass through a choke so you can go where you want to.The weight room is too small with way too many people. The pool room is cool, but they have way too many rules. I think I was talked to 5 times my first day with my 5 year old for reasons such as her being in any pool other then the kitty pool, getting in the kitty pool when no life guard was present, my 5 year old getting in the hot tub, running, not having a glow thing to indicate my daughters swimming skill, etc. read more

What a great place - energetic vibe, very welcoming staff, and friendly patrons. Its a happen' place that locals of all ages enjoy. They have a plethora of yoga classes, at least three a day, and many options for using the three pools - lap swim, rec pool and kiddie pool. On weekends there is a giant slide open in the rec pool area that is lots of fun. If weight lifting or exercise equipment is your thing, you can't go wrong here. There is a well equipped weight room, different room with about 10 stations of different exercise equipment, a spin cycle room with classes, and lots more. Its just a great place to hang out, get some exercise, and be part of an active downtown area. read more

Dear YMCA Boise, You beacon! You gym light in the dark and stormy morning! You saved my gym challenge with an early morning workout while I was in town visiting. Thanks a ton - there are quite a few favors and even a 6-course breakfast on the line for me! The gym area is large, clean and friendly. Although it was busy, it felt very community rather than cramped. The swim area looked like a blast for kids and the front desk was super helpful. The day pass was around 12$ and well worth it to check another day at the gym off my list. Parking is plentiful, with a lot both in front of the building and one across the street. TV screens showed morning news, but one also show slides of the offerings the provide for the community, which was robust and included everything from a diabetes prevention class to yoga. Cheers YMCA - thanks for the one day of fun! Next time I'm in Boise, I'll know where to go! read more

I love the idea of the Y and this is the only branch I've been to so I can only comment on this facility but as much as I want to love it, it definitely needs improvement. The cleanliness gets 2 stars at best. The floors in the yoga room, group fitness & the basement level room are filthy. My guess is they are almost never cleaned. It's difficult to do Barre because certain exercises require a sliding motion & you're sticking to the floor. The noise level in the yoga room is almost hilarious. During the rest period at the end of class you can hear every conversation from the locker rooms, toilets flushing, the bathing suit dryer spinning, the doors slamming, kids whining & screaming, you name it. The yoga room is too small & awkward with the amount of people they allow in. The last three classes were so tight we couldn't do several of the poses the instructor wanted to do because there wasn't enough room. People show up for yoga late, even 10 minutes into class & are allowed in a packed class where they force everyone to squeeze in even tighter disrupting the others practice to the point it's un-enjoyable. The instructor put up a sign yesterday at the beginning of class that said it was at capacity & three more people came in after several minutes completely ignoring the posted sign on the door. At that point the instructor should have asked them to not come in but I realize that might be awkward for them to have to do. The parking lot is not planned well & most spaces are too narrow for most cars/SUVs to fit into forcing people to use two spaces. I was unable to get into my car one day & had to climb in from the passenger side when someone squeezed in too close & I injured myself climbing into the driver seat. I told the staff later & they had no response or follow up. Having said all this the staff is very friendly mostly & several of the longtime employees are really welcoming to everyone. The instructors are the best part of this Y in my opinion. read more

The Y is the best! Well, there are always things that can be improved but I must say, in terms of standard gyms that one can join, the YMCA network is hard to beat. The fact that it is a registered non-profit and really strives to live up to its mission statement is a testament to the success of the organization and the dedication of its staff and its members. There are plentiful community programs to join, with topics raining from cancer to self-defense, to senior specific programs and fun runs, all of which promote a holistic approach to wellness. I've only been to the downtown Y, so this review is strictly for that location. Despite initially getting turned around by the awkward layout, once I had been a few times, it was no longer something I thought about. I tend to primarily go on days I'm not working (which include random weekdays) and thus typically can avoid major crowds. The few times I have gone during peak pre/post work hours, it can indeed be busy, but what gym isn't? That said, I've never *not* been able to find a cardio machine between the various rooms, as most people are respectful of the suggested 30 min time limits. And while the classes can fill up, the instructors do their best to accommodate everyone who shows up, even if you're a bit late. I appreciate how a latecomer can "interrupt" the vibe of a room, but the Y is all about getting people to live a healthy lifestyle, and turning people away or shaming them is not conducive to that, so I greatly applaud this "all are welcome" approach. If you're looking for a pretentious place, look elsewhere. I've yet to meet a grumpy employee or staff member, and everyone is always so kind and helpful. As for specifics, the adult women's changing room has plenty of lockers and is spacious. I have not used the showers or sauna, it's not really my thing, but they are available. I do not use a bath towel service, but do use the sweat towels provided and appreciate their availability. When I joined, I was given a thorough tour of the facility; there are also personal trainers that can set you up on a routine and teach you how to safely use the equipment if needed. I love love love the variety of classes, and there are ample free weights (as well as circuit machines) for use. There are 2 pools, but again, this isn't my thing so I haven't experienced them directly, though they always seem to be busy with kid or adult programs as well as free swim times. If you're looking for a place to boost up or maintain your health and wellness, look no further. You will not regret it. read more

Amazing place. I go swimming there a ton and my favorite life guard is Charlie. He is so kind and is very good at what he does. I also love to workout at the Y and they have very nice equipment that is up to date. Overall it's just a very nice place and I hope that everyone goes to visit the Y eventually. read more
