The beloved Porter
Alicia B.

I'm so overjoyed right now, I can't stop smiling. I'm going to let the couple of pictures I snapped paint the picture for you. Then, because I already wrote about this in my personal blog, I'm going to reiterate my thoughts. Ready? Ok, here goes: Just when I thought my day couldn't possibly get any better, it did. I walked into Downtown Wine & Spirits in Davis Square and, behold, my eyes did see the glory of the brewing of the beer. Seriously, anyone who knows me, even remotely, knows I have an affinity for beer. But, as I stood in the middle of the gigantic beer selection, I felt myself buzzing with glee. And that's when I realized, wow, I have more than an affinity for beer. It's a true, bonafide, deep and unadulterated love for it. Especially, and friends can vouch for this, certain West coast breweries, who, up until now, had eluded by pint-tilting grasp. Ok, Ok, Ok. I'll say one negative thing; then, be forewarned, this blog (AHEM. I mean Yelp Post) is oozing with delight. Negative: No Dogfishhead Chicory Stout. They had the customary IPAs, though, which is good. But still! At the check out, I was beside myself. I would have reached over and kissed the girl behind the counter, but I think she would have liked it, even if I wasn't her type. She had huge, black plugs in her ears and half her head was shaved clean to the skull. But, in that moment, I was in love. I spewed un-Bostonian delight onto her, too, and, like a sport, she took it, expressing acknowledgment in none other than the standard monotone that is familiar around here. Whatever. Nothing could taint how I felt. Not even the brisk, post-rain sky as I walked, carrying my happy brown bag, toward the Davis Square T station. What was in the brown bag you say? None other than my favorite Great Divide St. Bridgete's Porter. I hadn't found it anywhere in Boston, until now. They also had a HUGE selection of Rogue and had, as a far as I could tell, the best of the Left Hand Brewing Co. We're talking, this place was amazingly stocked. Sure, one guy complained that they were out of PBR, but I stood there, surrounded by six packs and single bottles of some of the most amazingly divine beer my tongue has ever tasted. The aisle was wide enough I could have down a cartwheel. I thought about it. Really. Take a look at these pictures and tell me you're not amazed. That was just two of the sections. That's not counting their refrigerated section with six-packs or their walk-in freezer with 20 oz bottles.

Dishes from best to worst: Pork Belly: absolutely would order again, very tender and delicious - one of the top pork bellies I can recall Shrimp: the shrimp was tasty, and the oil was delicious with the bread Octopus: really good, nice and crispy and not rubbery Potatoes: crispy and aioli was good, but nothing super special Cod: cod balls were fine, the other customer enjoyed them but personally not my favorite (probably more of a preference thing) Steak: Was a bit disappointed with the steak, was just strips of beef with some sauce Drinks: Sangria: we ordered one to share and the bartender split into two for us without us having to ask, was a refreshing drink Summary: 4/5 overall the food was very good with one or two semi-misses

Even if you don't end up liking the dish, the tapas size is small so you're not losing too much. And most importantly, most of the dishes I tried had garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil as the predominant flavor profile. The perfect seasoning profile for a non-adventurous eater! For the more adventurous eaters, I'd highly recommend sampling from their charcuterie and cheese selection. I enjoyed trying different combinations of cheese and meat with the bread to see which flavor profile was my favorite (also a good activity for Remy's friend from Ratatouille). As other reviewers mentioned, you can try a lot of dishes but the tables aren't that big so you have to be a little bit strategic if you want to dip the bread in the leftover sauces.

Typical overpriced liquor store in an expensive part of Boston in the west suburbs right off of Commonwealth. I don't drink so I don't care how overpriced it is - I just came here for some water. But if you're coming here for liquor, it might be a little out of your price range. Then again you're on Yelp so you're probably not poor. Lol. But it's still a good store because I know a lot of you love to drink and these stores are invaluable to you then basically. Pretty good selection too, and friendly enough. Prices are on the expensive side, but fairly standard for Harvard Square prices. They have the customary selection of beers, wines, liquors, and mixers, but they also have a section of Harvard apparel (like T-shirts, sweatshirts) and Harvard memorabilia (like keychains, mugs, coasters, etc), so it is a great place to also pick up some souvenirs while you are shopping for your beer! I also like that they sell accessories to complement your drinking, like plastic martini glasses and plastic shot glasses for a party. Their hours online might not necessarily reflect when you are able to buy alcohol. I walked in after 11pm one night and even though they were still open, I was told that they cannot sell alcohol after 11pm (not sure if that is only on specific nights or if this is a nightly rule).

Funniest liquor store outing in a while means 4 stars for this place…read more We were dressed up as Michelle Obama, Big Bird, and Binders full of Women when we came in here to grab some beer on our way to a halloween party and AJ, the best cashier ever, could not stop talking about how much he promised that Obama would win the election and how much Indians as a whole love Obama, etc. He said we could come back and celebrate with him in the store when he wins, so AJ be prepared come Nov 7th! We will be there! But this small liquor store has pretty good prices and it is good to know about since there aren't many others right in that general area. $6.99 for a six pack of Long Trail is pretty darn good! And then if you want to be even classier, a twelve pack of coors light for a little more than that! ha ha Thanks Somerville Wine and Spirits for making our Halloween night even more entertaining. I found ice for $1.99 for a 7 lb bag which was much more reasonable than Kroger. There were 2 employees in the store and both were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. I was the only customer in the store so one even went into the cooler, grabbed the case I needed and carried it to the cash register for me. The cashier was extremely nice, and we carried on a great conversation for a few minutes. I did not find the price of the beer to be that much over the cost that I would have paid at Kroger and I got to support a local business. I am not in the habit of buying liquor, but I would not hesitate to go to this business again if needed.
