Nice little bar and grill. Food was good, service was quick. I was able to get in eat and get out quickly which was what I was looking for.

We stopped here passing thru, bar staff friendly enough. Lots of locals. Average to above average bar food.

Quite possibly the worst service in the UP. Sat on the deck overlooking the river and waited much too long for the waiter to bring menus. The waitress on the other side of the deck hustled like crazy! When our food finally arrived it was only warm. Lesson learned read more

I thought it was a pretty nice bar and I wish we could have sat out on the rear deck/patio (not practical in January). The selection on tap was a bit short, but they had a lot of other options. We didn't get any food and I think we had a newer waiter, so I won't rate either of those. The atmosphere is pretty good. It's a bit loud with the music from the jukebox, but it's full of locals and college kids. It was easy to relax and everyone was friendly. read more

I sat out on the patio with some friends. WHen you are that far out, the servers forget that you are there. Our waiter must have been new, he brought us the wrong items several times, had to take them back and bring other items. Took a long time for beers to arrive too. Other than that, this is a nice place to sit out and watch the river traffic. read more

Everyone said this was a great place to grab a quick bite and enjoy a beautiful view. My roast beef dip sandwich was everything one would want with onions, mushrooms, and pepper jack cheese. They had Mango Cart on tap which is a new favorite beer of mine. The patio is scenic and the overall atmosphere is comfortable. Definitely a great stop when you are downtown by the bridge. read more

I've been a customer for over 27 years. Love their wings and most everything I've eaten over the many years. Did an order for pickup. Ordered 15 wings and 2 taco salads. Once I hung up checked my bank account and it was $54.00. I called back to confirm pricing for the wings and salad as online shows $9.75 per salad but could not find wing prices. The food came in a thin cardboard to go boxes. Wings were good, but was told $22.00 for 15 of them. That's outrageous. The salad were also in thin cardboard boxes the lettuce was not even chopped to bite size piece,s but rather giant hunks. The meat did not even have a taco taste let alone the meat and cheese were formed together like a solid brick. Ask for one with tomatoes and one without. The one with tomatoes was maybe like 1/4 of a tomatoe. There were no onions or black olives as usual. Very Very Disappointed....... read more

We walked in, it smelled of hot urine. We immediately walked back out. Seems like a place that locals hang out.

Terrible everything. From wait time45 mins for 2 sandwiches and some wings . To cold food. To the shot taking waitress. The table next to us sat down half hour after us. Got their food before us!!!!! Such a terrible experience. 3 waitresses on. 5 tables when we got there. NOT busy. I asked twice if this was a typical wait time for a few sandwiches. She said they were swamped. Then the table next to us gets hot food before us. Beyond a terrible experience. Won't be back. Do not recommend unless you're going for drinks. Don't order the food. Have heard in the community many comments about this place. Decided to try for ourselves. Disappointed to say the very least. Looks like any other bar & grill at the end of the business district, but it's a nice restaurant inside. They have great burgers, comparable to the large patties & loaded like the ones you might get at popular chains like Chili's or TGI Friday's. Their chicken strips are great too. On a warm summer day, though too few in these parts, you can go eat on their huge outdoor patio, complete with fake palm trees, and get a great view of the lake and the Houghton-Hancock bridge over Lake Superior. Came here for dinner. I work in food industry, so I understand busy days but this is no where near as busy as I've seen places. We are currently on minute 56 waiting for our APPETIZERS! We've watched tables sit down and get food before ours and when we asked they said it's almost up.. 20 minutes later we JUST got our apps. I like this Bar! It's a great place with everyday specials! I've been here for couple of times and I loved environment, customer service and music. Specifically you can enjoy beautiful scenes of Lake Superior I'm calm environment. I would recommend this place for sure. We were so excited to be able to sit outside and overlook the canal. we waited AN HOUR AND 45 MINUTES for our food! I asked the waitress if they could give us a discount for our inconvenience. she said the manager could do NOTHING for us. They charge 3% to use a credit card so I wrote a (local) check. They refused my check. Because of the long wait for our food, we had to boat home in the pitch dark. what an awful experience! read more

It served as our motivation to get into the UP on schedule. Luckily, we made it into the city right on time. Some of us didn't check in right away, instead we went right over the Downtowner. Our group of 34 bikers wasn't going to miss out on this drink special! Upon entering the bar, it looks like your typical bar with a long bar and tables lining the wall. It seemed like every other bar I've been to in the Midwest especially in a college town. However, this bar earns extra stars for its beautiful patio. The patio is gorgeous with views overlooking the water and a nearby bridge. It was great to sit down on a gorgeous summer day on the patio. Drinking 2 for 1 bottles sure didn't hurt either. We sat for a few hours soaking up the remaining sun and sunset enjoying the view and brews. The Downtowner's a nice, laid back bar to enjoy some tasty brews in Houghton. read more

The Downtowner (DT) is an amazing bar and it is by far one of my favorites. The views off of the patio of the portage are unmatched The beer selection is good and the bartenders make great shots and mixed drinks. The beverage prices are ridiculously cheap and of fairly high quality. In regards to the menu, the DT offers some of the best bar food known to man, including some of the best hot wings, mozzarella sticks, fries, and burgers. I would have to say that the DT hot wings are some of the best that I have ever had and should definitely not be missed. The menu isn't the best if you're looking for healthy or vegetarian options, but they taste amazing and like the drinks they are priced low. If you're looking for drink specials, Thursday is the day to go. They serve personal pitchers of long island ice tea (and other tasty varieties) for $7.50. These are not for the weak at heart and have the tendency to sneak up on anyone who doesn't expect how alcoholic they actually are. Thursday also features discounted wings, which is another plus. Get there early, especially if MTU is in session, because the tables fill up fast! read more

Yes, like other reviews said, service will be a little bit slower than normal. However, it's very clear that they are understaffed and actively trying to hire more people. This is one of the best bars to go to in the area. Great patio that over looks the water. Drinks are reasonably priced too. Depending on when you go there may be lots of college kids or just a few. The wings are alright, cheap and I'm told the only decent ones in the area. Don't order the Asian flavored ones, they sorta taste like a cheap orange/sesame chicken sauce from a bottle, but I thought the dry rub and mild ones were okay. read more

Great view of the lift bridge from the outdoor deck. Food was normal bar food, nothing special but we weren't there for that really. College bar feel but the outdoor deck is what this place is all about. Mixed drinks were watered down(I didn't expect much) so I would tend to lean more toward the beer selection. We moved to the area this summer after visiting a few times over the years. We've been trying all the different restaurants in town trying to find a few favorites. This is NOT one. My husband and I were seated on the upper deck on a Thursday evening and ordered drinks once a waitress sauntered by--half an hour later we got them. We ordered dinner--my husband had a burger and fries, I had a reuben and fries. His came after about 45 minutes, my order was lost. Another 40 minutes later, I got my food--thoroughly grease-soaked and bland. Clearly, the huge drinks were popular (in blue) as all the college kids were drinking them. I may go back just once more to enjoy the outdoor seating (which is rare here), but, honestly, there are several better places to eat in town. read more

Despite some of the poor reviews I found the staff pleasant, the food was good for bar food, perhaps even a step above normal bar grub. I had the rueben & soup. The meat was good in both & my friend had a pita & curds that he enjoyed. Didn't find the beer extremely overpriced either, but I'm not from around Houghton. The view is pretty nice off the back patio too. Only thing I could say I didn't like was that both times I've been there the front bar was blasting whatever game was on sooo loud I ran to the outside bar. With only 2 people sitting in there they both must have been deaf to need it that loud. I liked their hotel too. Not any cheap motels in town that we could find. Its the cheapest option & the rooms are outdated but in a way that I liked. They seem clean & well maintained for such an old place. It's got a very vintage vibe partly because it smells like grandma's house & had some vintage mirrors, furniture & art. I thought their use of floor covering on the walls was pretty interesting & cool. Carpeted walls, who knew? It must have helped keep the noise low from other rooms because we weren't bothered when it was full. With the exception of poor wifi connection in our room I really like the place. not to mention it's next to the bridge & on the main drag. read more

Great view of the bridge, and one of the only outdoor dining options in the Copper Country. What is going on in this neck of the woods, never heard of outdoor seating? The food is really substandard. For example, salads are iceberg with cheese bits sprinkled on top. Go for the view, have a drink, and eat elsewhere. When its sunny, there are only 2 umbrellas and the rest of the deck is totally exposed to the sun. read more
