While the food is good, the reason the restaurant merits a 3 star is due to the very poor customer service of the waitresses. I've been to this restaurant multiples times, and the same waitresses attend to me. Yet these waitresses still do not know my name, and don't even bother to smile for me. Ok, pan-Asian place with sushi and an interesting assortment of noodle dishes. Seems to be Thai owned judging from the flavor variations from traditional styles in the nonThai dishes. The sushi is not great but it is adequate. Happy hour prices on sushi makes it a relatively good bargain if you happen to go at the right time. The Vietnamese spring rolls are open ended, had chicken in addition to the usual shrimp, and were served with a sauce with chopped peanuts and a dollop of sriracha already mixed into the sweet thin sauce, which was much lighter than the usual sauce at other places. The ramen was surprisingly close to how traditional Japanese ramen is supposed to taste. The right noodles and ingredients for the most part. Kamaboko (fish cake) and menma (pickled bamboo shoot) are unaccountably absent in most ramen offerings but were present here. The soup was a bit one dimensional, without the subtlety of a soup that has been simmered for a long time with the proper veggies, bones, carcasses, etc. I'm guessing it is basically an instant broth flavored with soy sauce. The Thai ice coffee was adequate too. Overall, not a bad little joint though I have a feeling that the quality of the dishes probably varies to a great extent depending on whether the dish is from a culinary tradition with which the chef is comfortable. I would bet the Thai dishes are good but I have to reserve judgment on the Chinese food until I try it. The Japanese dishes seem to follow traditional guidelines but fall short of the quality you get from one who really has an in depth understanding born from either long experience or intense study - in other words, adequate. The service was friendly. The acoustics are not so great. Good, low-key, neighborhood spot, that is worth a try. read more

I went here with a friend who works in the area. I'm not even a Thai food fan, but it was close and convenient. We had the spring rolls, the dumplings and the crispy and soft noodle dish. I haven't stopped thinking about it. The flavors were amazing....I am currently looking to see if we have anything similar where I live...crossing fingers. I was a regular customer at one point but always thought their customer service was horrible and didn't like how they treated their staff. I wrote it off as a cultural difference. The food is ok but not great. Sushi is far superior at Kuni's. We were there during their happy hour special, which has a cut off of 5:30. My children and I watched them send a senior single woman away as she walked in at 5:25. We all felt so sad for her. They should've honored the discount. Then a week later they did the same thing when my kids walked in without me. I was shocked and called the owner and she promptly told me she didn't care if she lost both that lady and us as customers. Well, if we're not valued or respected as customers and you don't need us, OK. Happy to give my business to another establishment that knows what customer service is and knows how to treat their staff, who apparently all quit, too! We went to Siam Paragon who also has specials. My son broke a glass filled with water and their long term waitress was so gracious with her help and suggested great options for our dinner. Complete opposite! I'm wondering if the other reviewers and I ate from the same place. The Nigiri sushi I got was of the it had been sitting out 2 or 3 days before they got around to serving it variety. The pieces were also small. Perhaps the other review is the sort of person who thinks rolls of fried stuff with mayo on it is sushi... Me I used to live in Japan, and I found this sushi to be barely edible. Its yet another of those Thai places that serves up sushi with no real appreciation of it as a culinary delight. read more

Love, love, love this restaurant! The pad thai is excellent and much less greasy than most restaurants in Chicago. The yellow curry and ginger dishes are also delicious. My parents were in town and we were really excited to try it after checking out be menu online. My parents enjoyed the ramen and the curry. I had a bento box and was deeply disappointed. I never got my salad, my food came long after both of my parents were served, the shrimp tempura was cold, my sautéed veggies consisted of 3 pieces of broccoli and mostly bean sprouts, and the fish in the sushi was mushy and cut too big for the rice underneath. The only thing I actually enjoyed was the California roll. I would not recommend getting sushi or a bento box here. read more

The staff is friendly. Otherwise, the food is no good. I ordered the soba noodle tempura and the broth was just like drinking from a bottle of soy sauce. The noodles were good but really how can anyone go wrong with cooking noodle. Soup should be mainly about how amazing the broth is and Dozika's broth needs a lot of work. The california roll is ok, the nori was a cheap type of nori that didn't have a nice roasted fish smell like good sushi usually does. The prices was also a bit high for the quality of food. While the food is okay, the restaurant experience and service is not good. Last night my Mom and I went for dinner at 7:30 pm. While we are still eating the meal, they turn up the lights and make it very clear to us that they want us to leave. And this is while they are also training someone on how to serve. It is 8:15 PM and we have food and drinks in front of us. Note to new staff and especially the woman training her - if I have a full glass of wine and food in front of me and you are clearly expecting a tip for your service, this is not the right way to go about it. read more

I am a frequent Dozika goer... I find the service to be very good, and willing to accomodate special requests and substitutions. The girl who works lunch during weekdays is especially excellent! I find all of their sushi to be very good and fresh, and the curry is very excellent when extra spicy. It's a good all-around asian restaurant that can cater to kids, and people who love all types of asian food. read more

Just moved to Evanston about a month ago and, as a huge Thai food person, was very happy to find this place. It's conveniently located between the train station and my house so I will definitely be a repeat customer. I have only tried the pad thai with tofu and the miso soup, but so far so good! I like a little more veggies with my pad thai but definitely not a deal breaker. Looking forward to actually eating in the restaurant sometime and trying other thai dishes and sushi. I live two blocks away and didn't go to it after it opened, for a couple years. Now I'm a frequent visitor. The sashimi has me hooked. It's a little inconsistent, but when it's good it's outstanding. I love Dozika. They have half-price sushi hours during the week. They have good Thai and other non-sushi options as well. The staff is also so friendly. When my mom broke her leg and was in a wheelchair they let us in the back entrance, were really attentive and even helped us carry leftovers to our car! Although I would say Kuni's has the best tasting sushi on the North Shore the quality at Dozika is high and considering the prices is a great option. read more

I was going to give this two stars, but based on my experience, I thought that rating was too high and decided to give it 1 star. I ate here a couple nights ago with a friend. To start with, it was not busy at all, but after we were seated, it took forever to get service. When the server finally got to our table, she could hardly speak English, was very unfriendly, and kept trying to walk away before we were finished ordering, but I didn't let it bother me because I was out having a good time. We ordered sushi as an appetizer, and they made a mistake (served us salmon instead of tuna), so we had to send it back, but I thought, no big deal. When our actual dinner finally arrived, my meal was ice cold but there were no servers in sight for me to inform. After a while, I was finally able to flag someone down and sent it back to re-heat. When the server brought it back out for the 2nd time, I tried it again and it was still cold! It was as if it was never warmed up at all. I told her it was still cold, and she said that most people eat tai food luke warm. (?!?!) I have honestly never heard this before, not to mention the asked for them to warm it up. In addition, she offered no apology and by this time, my friend was almost done with her dinner, so I asked her to please wrap it up in a to go bag. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with the service and won't be returning. read more

I am from Hyde Park, so I am well acquainted with restaurant food that could be served to dogs with only a few minor alterations (putting it in a different kind of bowl, mostly). But I was SHOCKED by how utterly, inhumanly awful the food at Dozika Inc was. I ventured to Evanston on a Sunday afternoon, and craving some Asian food I decided to step into Dozika Inc. The menu looked a little gimicky--lots of balloon letters and a special kids menu--but there are many reliable, cheap places that serve Americanized yet tasty Asian fare that look like Dozika. I assumed, also, that being in Evanston the bar was a little higher for restaurants at every price range. Jesus, was I wrong. I should have realized there was something amiss when, on a Sunday afternoon, there was no one in the place. The decor is typically cheap Asian, with some paper lanterns and other vaguely Oriental but not intimidatingly unfamiliar knick knacks. And as in every cheap Asian joint in the city there was some weird 80s light rock playing over the PA. But enough of the preliminaries. The service was good, my waitress was nice--but if I knew how bad the food was, I wouldn't have wanted it to issue from the kitchen at such a break-neck pace. I ordered the shrimp rolls, which came in a leaf-shaped platter with some watery sauce. I bit into the shrimp roll--and I tasted something cold and slimy. The rolls were not HEATED thoroughly, and a big piece of unidentified seafood was lying in the center, barely thawed. I almost puked. Then my beef with broccoli came. Beef and Broccoli is the most unambitious Anglo-Asian recipe ever conceived. Yet Dozika somehow managed to screw it up with horribly chewy, thin pieces of emaciated beef and a gloopy, salty sauce with a few odd chunks of ginger thrown in to screw with your head. My god, it was terrible. Never, I repeat, NEVER go here if you value your palate or just your health--I'm still recovering from those shrimp rolls. read more
