"One of my new favorites in the bay area." I've been to this taproom many times. It seems like it has changed drastically for the better. I always have a great time here. Today I settled on the Czech Pilsner. Just with the doctor ordered! The beer selection is absolutely fantastic. I was told how awesome Drake's was a few years back, but had to see it for myself to believe it, and yes, it is great! Along with the 24 beers they've got on tap, they also a bunch of games including skee ball, pop-a-shot, darts, and even some board games, and a good amount of seating both indoors and out. Skee ball and darts were both $5, but for that darts were unlimited, and you got five games of skee ball. With so many different beers on tap, they were able to cover a wide variety of beer styles. I ended up going with a watermelon blonde sour ale and really liked it! We had a large group and were there for a bar crawl so we only got one drink, but I would've loved to try more of their taps. Went to first Friday for the first time in a long time. Watched the warriors game and caught up with a couple of friends. Drakes added some games since the last time I was there. Basketball game and darts. The beer is still good tried the depoginzer. The service was amazing had questions and were able to taste a few...quite a few before deciding. Whenever we're in town for work, we love enjoying some beer & food at Drake's whenever we have time to kill before our flight home. It's a comfortable space with tons of indoor seating and a decently sized patio with lots of greenery. They've got Darts to play and a shelf with boardgames. The beer selection is always good. This particular visit, I had a pour of "The Golden Hour Grind" Pilsner and "Dry Stout" Irish Stout - both very enjoyable. We also grabbed a bite to eat. I had the Caprese sandwich w/ tots which was both delicious and super filling. The bartenders are always real friendly and welcoming. Seating is comfortable. They also have a good selection of beer to-go. My only 2 complaints, which is the reason for a star taken away; 1) For such a massive space, it's wild to me that they only have 2 gender neutral restrooms. Feels like there should be 2 more. 2) When taking an Uber/Lyft, 98% of the time the drivers get completely lost when trying to drop us off or pick us up. We've learned to tack on an extra 20 mins for Uber/Lyft to find us and get us to the airport in time. Other than those 2 small complaints, we love coming to Drake's by the Oakland airport. read more

*REVIEW ON BANQUET/EVENTS* Drakes is a San Leandro staple with good food and ever better beer so when it came to finding a spot to host my daughter's baptism reception, we decided to host it here. There was no indication that the space was reserved or someone to inform them that there's an event.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Also...If I'm coming to an event, I expect that the food is there already ready and set up. We got there an no food was out. Mind you, it's lunch time and folks are hungry after a morning baptism. The food took much longer to get out and wasn't all ready at the same time. The initial plates of sliders and flautas came out around 12:45pm -- 15 to 20 minutes later from the event start time. That wasn't even the full amount as they came in small batches so...Of course they'd be gone in an instant and when asked if more food was coming out, it seemed as if we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. When it came down to paying, we checked out with the General Manager Ashley and reviewed and paid our bill. She made a foul comment saying that she has never seen anything like it and that our guests and I quote "were like ravenous dogs." This is extremely rude for someone in the hospitality industry and for someone to say to as a person of color. I'm appalled at this language and while the event is done and the food was good, I wouldn't consider going back given the rudeness we experienced. I really think they should consider hiring someone strictly for events as she was the one handling it all. read more

Their tables were long enough to seat all of us. The owners were sweet, loved their holiday decor. We stayed until closing and they were very nice about telling us to leave. We had to drop off a granddaughter and decided to grab an early dinner at Drakes Barrel House. We were glad we did. The service was great. The assistant manager took our order quickly. We had the Cali Burger and grilled ham and cheese. Both were great. The burger was cooked perfectly. It was good sized and filled the bun. The bacon was crispy and there was plenty of avocado. The aioli added a nice bite. The ham and cheese had lots of ham and gooey cheese. It was crunchy. We also had the garlic tots. I'm glad my husband also ate them as there was lots of garlic. The ambiance is casual. Even though it was raining it was very comfortable inside. They have dart boards, skeet ball and lots of tables. You know that Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "It's not the destination, it's the journey"? While that certainly applies to many things in life, I'd be lying if I said it absolutely applied to my trip to Drake's Barrel House. Don't get me wrong - it's well worth the effort to come here. But, at the same time, after (needlessly) circling around the parking lot a few times, I certainly wouldn't have minded if finding this place had been just slightly less challenging! Literally hidden behind a Walmart and the Burlington in the Westgate shopping complex, Drake's is practically impossible to find unless you're actually looking for it. And even then, if you're anything like me, it still might take you longer than it should unless you know where to go - either through the small road between the two retailers from the parking lot or down the street that's behind Walmart off of Westgate. Once you manage to make your way here, though, you'll definitely be rewarded - this place is great! Not only do they have a ton of indoor and outdoor seating, but between the TV's on the walls, their handful of arcade machines, like pop-a-shot and skeeball, dartboards, and their collection of board games, there's no shortage of entertainment, too! Now, as impressive as the space itself may be, the best thing they have to offer is clearly their selection of beers and ciders. With over two dozen varieties on tap on any given day, from pilsners, porters, stouts, lagers, and ambers to a whole slew of IPA's, double IPA's, pale ales, sours, and more, there's bound to be something for everyone (assuming you like beer). What's more, their food menu is equally impressive, which includes multiple types of burgers, wings, tots, and tacos (their exact offerings depends on when you come here, as they will sometimes host outside food trucks). With how much the entire venue has to offer, along with their awesome beer and food selections, it's really no wonder why this place is so amazing. The one potential knock about this place is that the patch of parking spaces directly in front is likely to be full if you come here during peak hours, but you can always park in the main lot by Walmart and walk over. Other than that, Drake's Barrel House pretty much has all of the ingredients needed to enjoy a pint or three while enjoying those warm summer nights that are coming! I've been looking for a game day place ever since Bag O'Crab shut down their epic sports bar with the wall-sized TV.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So I tell my friends and we all make plans to meet at Drake's on Sunday to watch our Niners beat Tennessee. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Fast forward to Sunday. I show up in my 49ers gear since their ad said 15% off if you wear Niners gear.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]First thing I notice is some other 49ers fans in the parking lot getting back in their cars. Hmm, that's not good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I go inside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Uhh, there's no chairs at all in front of the TV and no game audio. It's some special "vinyl record sales" event.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All the seating in front of the TV is taken by the boxes of vinyl records and a DJ is spinning records. I think, hmm, I guess they need to wrap this up soon because the game starts in 10 minutes. I get in line to order food and talk to the bartender still thinking that OF COURSE they will have the watch party. They ADVERTISED it after all. I am bringing in 4 friends, some driving all the way over from the peninsula because they ADVERTISED a 49ers watch party. I came to this damned bar because they told me this is the place to watch the game. But I ask the bartender just to be sure. And all I get is, "oh yeah, we usually have watch parties, but not today. today is a special event". No apology. No real sense that maybe it's wrong to ADVERTISE a watch party event and have people plan for it and then NOT HAVE A WATCH PARTY! He just couldn't care less. So I had to scramble to find a new place and coordinate with 4 others that were already on their way. So yeah, never again. Celebrated Cinco De Mayo here by myself while my wife shopped at Walmart next door. If you are following, in my last review, I said I am NOT coming to this Walmart anymore and I am willing to pay extra to NOT come here. But I have NO problem hanging out at Drakes while she shops. Actually, because the lines are so long on weekends, I can have at least two beers, LOL. Quality/Quantity - Tracksuit Sunday - Newest IPA, and started with this. Juicy Hoot - Okay, my wife/Walmart took so long I got two more of this. After 3 IPAs, I was done for the day. I also sampled the following beers: Meebers, Aroma Coma, Jolly Roger, and I'm not sure but I think I tried right before leaving the Santa's Brass...? All was good, but the last two were just too strong for me, both in flavor and alcohol wise. Food also available, see menu. I remember when we were allowed to bring our own food, or am I outdating myself, lol. Might come back to try out their lunch specials one of these days. Atmosphere - I watched as this place changed from a production facility to what it is today. Very cool. I come here more often than I should, that is what shopping at Walmart will do to me... I actually noticed both the Walmarts I frequent have a brewery next door?!?! Is this done strategically? Reno, NV Walmart has my Schussboom Brewing. What can I say, I am a huge craft beer enthusiast and aficionado. And considering that "Drake's Barrel House" has been around since the 80's (you heard that right), this place has been a trendsetter for many Bay Area breweries, tap houses, and craft beer halls to many new places. Having been opened since 1989, just about every Bay Area beer fanatic has been to this place and considering I lived in the Bay until 2001, I never got the chance to visit until just recently. Located in the heart of San Leandro and right off of the 580 freeway and Davis St. exit, Drake's is notoriously known for being tucked away in a shopping center that is anchored by a Wal-Mart and Home Depot as well as other major retailers such as Burlington, Ross, and Togo's Sandwiches. I must admit, it was a little challenging finding this place at first. But when you drive to where Wal-Mart is near the loading area, you will see the entrance complete with all the barrels. It definitely threw me off but now I know for future visits if I happen to come here again. As I mentioned, don't let the location deter you from coming here as many think of this part of town not being the safest as well as being crime-ridden. As long as you park as close to here as you can, lock your vehicle, and walk with a friend or two, you should be fine. Upon entering, you will notice a huge wraparound outdoor patio area which is great for the sunnier days. The inside is absolutely huge with ample seating that can fit at least a hundred people comfortably. Their menu is also very extensive with several lagers, sours, stouts and IPA's to accommodate all beer tastes. Since I was driving and only wanted a small sample of what they had to offer, I went with two of their lighter beers; their "Dog Walker Pilsner" and their "Bold Rush Liquid Cold". Both were excellent and set to the perfect chilled temperature. They have a very progressive menu that is ever-changing on a monthly basis. I also wanted to add that they have a nice little food selection including burgers, sandwiches, salads, and tots. They even have a dog-friendly menu selection as Drake's welcomes all breeds of dogs. All in all, "Drake's Brewing Company" is the real deal and as good as it gets for a quality brewery. Since I live in the Sacramento area, I've frequented their sister location, "Drake's: The Barn" on several occasions. Only difference is that is exclusively an outdoor only spot. However, as far as the O.G. San Leandro location goes, when you factor in the authenticity, beer selection, service, and price, I am giving this one a unanimous five-star rating. read more

I have gone to Drakes many times for a beer and lunch to refilling a keg, best deal ever BTW. This trip was a step above. Went to get our keg filled before the weekend. Brian took amazing care of us. Had not picked what beer for the next keg and Brian gave wonderful feedback and samples. During the visit my son who was with me got a call about a job he had interviewed for and had to head outside for a call. I watched Brian connect with everyone who came to the bar. Amazing. My son found out he got the job. Brian shook his hand in congratulations. Great day, great place to be when it happens and Brian made it that much better. Cool spot to grab a few beers on tap. Nice indoor and outdoor space. The bartenders were going out of their way to be of service. You can order some light bites from the food truck outside. Tons of options beer wise, they also have some slushy options if that is your jam. I wish they had some sort of happy hour to help drive people in at a certain time and to get a little price relief, but it seems no breweries in the bay area offer this. When I went with friends on a Saturday in July mid afternoon, there were about a dozen other people there. It was dead. I visited Drake's on a hot Friday night. We had a great time! I've been to their other locations, including the one in West Sac and Oakland. Each location has its own unique charm. Drakes is located behind Walmart so drive back a little further and you will find more parking. They have plenty of seating inside and outside so depending on the weather it is nice in either area. They have a food cart to order food at the bar when you order your beer. They have a great selection of beers to choose from. The staff are always nice and helpful when I have a question about the beer. read more

Excellent spot before an A's game. We've often come here for food and drinks, and it's a short Uber ride to the stadium. Ordering food and drinks can be done from your phone, and service is really prompt. Lots of space, both indoor and outdoor. Drake's beer speaks for itself - if you haven't tried Hopocalypse it's a tasty hazy DIPA staple, give it a shot. Like many breweries, they've embraced the Hazy craze, but not just for the sake of sales, their hazies are excellent. They've added Juicy Hoot and Hazing Saddles and I enjoyed both. If you're not a Hazy person, there are plenty of choices - pils, hefe, stout, lagers, sours - pick your poison. The tater tots are a good compliment to the beer selection. When the A's pack up for Vegas, I'll surely find another excuse to head up for some good beer and food. read more
