I have mixed feelings about writing this review. I wanted to watch the Grammy's. I called ahead and asked if they would be playing it. They said they could accommodate me I made it just in time to catch Bruno Mars performance of "I just might." I was enjoying a beer. There was only one other patron at one end of the bar scrolling on his phone and a couple focused on each other near the window. None of the patrons were engaged in watching any of the TVs. I was 10' away from each. I was straining to hear the show with all the other noise from unwatched TVs but I managed. I ordered another beer. At which point, the juke box began to play so loud that not only could I no longer hear anything of the Grammy's, I couldn't hear myself think. I paid and left my beer on the counter. I get that this was not an ideal setting to watch the Grammy's but I had called ahead. There was no need to play the jukebox at that level given the patronage that was there IMO. The Grammy's come on once a year surely, watching Bruno Mars live is a better choice than a juke box. read more

Even though they still don't have couches, this place is still the best to be at when you want to have a great time. This is a bar for anyone and anything, I am a local drunk here, even sometimes I don't drink I come in to catch a movie or a sports event and the folks here make it even more entertaining.. the bartenders here are awesome, Matt, Diego, Stefan, Adolfo, and even my 4th best friend Brandon, who lately I've seen some people call him out for having a bad day or just standing up to someone who may not have known his place when it came to banter and bar talk. This is a great neighborhood bar. Prices are good. Jukebox, TVs, pool table. The bartenders will leave you alone if it seems like that's what you want, and none of them are super in your face unless you're being disruptive in some kind of way. I have seen them act real quick on people being belligerent or shady or scary - which is another reason this bar is awesome - they do take care of their customers by keeping the shi**y people out. If you're looking for a place to have a couple drinks and chill quietly on your own, or, be able to chit chat with people from a bunch of different backgrounds and walks of life, this is the spot. Great neighborhood bar with character. Lots of older sports memorabilia - all the NFL helmets from yesteryear are displayed in the rear of the bar where the pool table is. Crowd does have many locals but the vibe varies from time to time which can make for a fun and sometimes interesting time. The bar tenders are funny guys which adds to the character of the place. AVOID coming in on Monday nights!!! The bartender is a completely rude! He attended me and my friend at first and then completely forgot about us. He was more preoccupied on his phone than he was on customers. When it came time to us leaving I wanted to have one more drink and I had to raise my voice to get his attention, and WHAT DID HE DO?? HE STRAIGHT LOOKED UP AT US AND LOOKED BACK DOWN AT HIS PHONE!!!! The disrespect was UNREAL, I am a bartender myself and I would NEVER treat PAYING customers this way.. I would've given it 1 star but the beer has been good when we have gone. There's this one bartender that is absolutely rude, and racist I will add. My brother waited while I went to the bathroom never once acknowledged him, even when my brother said hello. He was real quick to serve the white customers. Other bartenders have been great, very open and nice but this guy is a douche. We left didn't even order a beer. Do better . The Stein Lounge is my favorite dive bar in The Bay. Unpretentious, welcoming and with very competitive prices. I started going over 7 years ago when I moved to Hayward. In this bar I met really cool people that became great friends to me. The regulars are the nicest people you'll meet! I like to go with my best friend after a long day at work for the best dirty martini that I've had (courtesy of Brandon). And as single females we've always felt well taken care of by the staff if someone starts crossing lines. I love to see the diversity of Hayward reflected in the bartenders (Matt, Brandon, Stefan and Diego) that will serve you your drink right away and will keep you conversation if that is what you want, or let you enjoy your drink in silence if you prefer. The first time I came into this bar, it was evident that this is a safe bar for me to be in alone; the owners and bartenders take care of any creepy or misbehaving people quickly and efficiently. This past Saturday it was May Day celebrating Asian and pacific island heritage in downtown Hayward. The celebration was beautiful after everything ended we came to have a drink here at stein lounge. My sisters and I use to come here years ago and the bartenders and owners were sooo sweet! The owners an older couple were always so welcoming. Sad to say that the bartenders they have now are RACIST! I couldn't believe they refused to sell to us and wouldn't give us a valid reason. I'd get it if we were wasted and being obnoxiously drunk. On top of it many people outside were telling us they only want to serve their regular white customers. This is unacceptable do better stein lounge. Totally never coming here again and I will be letting everyone I know not to come here! read more

REVIEWER # 52 The Stein Lounge is nestled in downtown Hayward walking distance from the Hayward Bart. The lounge offers a Sports Bar/Dive Bar type of feel. They are open from Monday-Friday from 10AM-2PM and Friday and Saturday with extended hours from 8AM-2AM. Inside they offer 6 different size TV'S (great place to watch the game!) They also have a pool table, dart machine as well as a Juke Box that plays all the slammin' music! I came here during Cinco de Mayo weekend as I heard that this place was offering beer and Tequila specials all day! I had the pleasure of having Brandon, Matt and Erica as my bartenders. They are all well knowledgeable about their drinks so feel free to ask them for best bars or cocktails if you are undecided. This place always seems to have exciting specials happening during holidays or special occasions. The place has amazing décor, especially the steins hanging from the ceiling. The bartenders know how to make a damn good drink. I also hear that their bloody Mary's are a MUST. It's best to sit at the bar and chat-it-up with the bartenders! It was early. We were killing time waiting for Playt to open. The bartender, pretty sure his name was Zack, was great. Friendly, funny, chill. We had a pitcher and it wasn't until a friend had ordered and we were finished I noticed the Dogfish Head tap. I asked which brew and when he said, "90 Minute", I almost fell out of my chair! Absolutely one of my favorite beers and here is was on tap at The Stein Lounge. Well, that's pretty fantastic. The steins hanging from the ceiling are a cool touch, though I'm not sure a Snoopy mug qualifies as a stein. So whimsy is cool. No complaints. The jukebox was pretty good, too! There were maybe 7 customers and that included the three of us. It was a little after 4:00 on a Saturday. I'd say that's generally too early for a crowd. Been coming to this bar since I moved here. It is a bit divey but the prices are right and I love to play pool. Zack is the best bartender, he is very friendly and engages the customers in various conversational topics. My "go to" place when I want a cold beer or cocktail at a reasonable price. To "Wendy" who has posted a review here and was 86'd by bartender Diego for no good reason, I had the exact same experience as you did with drama queen Diego. I've been to many hundreds of bars over the years and never 86'd...not once. I own my own business and know crappy treatment when I see it. Too bad that you had to go through his "phony 86" that makes no sense. I was alone and minding my own business in a slow, midday bar when Diego flies in toward me and tells me to drink up and get out and don't come back. I was like "WTF!"Kind of bipolar stuff. Wendy, I can tell you that the reason why you received no professional response from owner/manager Brandon about Diego's bad behaviour is because Diego is in Brandon's pocket. I'll just leave it at that. Brandon allows this stupid stuff to go on with a wink Diego's way. In fact, looks like he approves of it. I also have a theory that they're trying to "young up" the bar and chase the older folks (I'm 64) out the door. Brandon has the personality of a dead fish and has little interest in chatting or being pleasant with the customers. He acts like he's beyond bored being there. My not going in there is no great loss as I have plenty of other options to go have a drink. I don't know what Stein banks in an average month, but the incoming cash would be much improved if Brandon would stay out of the bar during operating hours and rein in Diego's ass-holish behaviour with customers. Oh, and clean up all those mugs that have been hanging over the bar for a thousand years. To all the haters, this is MY experience at Stein. If you disagree, have the balls to post your own review. This place is divey. Exactly what I was looking for. Ironically we went to the Dirty Bird to check it out and my buds and I were confused because it didn't have that divey feel. Well this place does and its right across the street! The whole look of the Stein Lounge is divey; this establishment reminds me of the old Dirty Bird that was off Mission blvd. Walking in it appears that there's one bartender and he is actually the only employee on stafff. The bar has plenty of seats and the vibe is great. People are just there to drink booze and watch sports, especially at 11:30pm. There is a lot of sports memorabilia throughout the bar lounge. Pitchers are $21 and the bartender stated that's about 4/pitcher. $5 brews, not bad. The brews on tap are nothing out of the ordinary. Which is neither good nor bad. The cocktails I can't really comment on but from what it appeared at least, the bartender knew what he was doing. In the back there is a pool table. You have to give you driver's license to the bartender to get the white cue ball. Also ask for change because it takes $1 in coins. Old school pool table. It's in decent condition, the cue sticks are in great shape considering as well. Bathrooms for a divey lounge are clean, surprisingly. Would I come back here to chill? Yes. I have been coming to the stein since 2016. This place is not my typical environment (not a fan of dive bars). What made the difference for me was the bartenders, and feeling respected as a customer. Sure, sometimes the bartenders are not in the greatest mood, but I can also understand since I also wouldn't like dealing with entitled drunks who think because they're spending $50 bucks on a tab they get to make demands. If you read the reviews, you will notice a lot of people are in their feelings and probably get an adrenaline rush from writing reviews on Yelp to "stick to the man" pulling the racist card or whatever other reason they wanna manipulate to make this place look bad. I would encourage anyone to go have their own experience, and leave their own review based on that. Can't say it'll be life-changing, but I can tell you it won't be as bad as some of these people are making it out to be read more

Place is still a dive bar, but that's what you expect. They now have POS System and Updated some other stuff. It's never going to be a chain bar, but that's the point of a neighborhood spot. Some of the rough edges have been shaved off. Now the Testosterone has gone down and the service has gone up, but something is missing that would push this into a 3 star dive bar. Maybe they need to clean the asbestos ceiling or brighten up the paneled faux wood walls; I don't know. Downtown needs a dive bar, but it doesn't need a dirty one (does it?). Downtown bars ranking 1. Definitely a dive bar. If you put all the regulars together, you might not even have a full set of teeth. They take care of the place, though, and the place pretty much stays drama-free. The alcohol selection is a little lacking - You won't find Hennessy or Hypnotiq here - but in my experience, the people that drink garbage alcohol are the ones that cause problems. There are four TVs that get just about every sports channel, a juke box that can pull just about any song off the internet and a pool table that plays itself. (Kidding about the last part for you dense people.) The prices went up a bit recently, but they are still more than reasonable. Usually a good place to go if you just want to chill. read more
