It was apparent to us that the bigger companies have to deal with a lot of volume. I'm sure they have great people working at those companies, but I was concerned that we wouldn't get the attentive service and communication we needed. We started our journey with our IVF clinic, UCSF Reproductive Clinic, which is one of the best in the world. And that's where we found A Perfect Match. They had a small, vetted list of the best surrogacy agencies. Our UCSF coordinator said that A Perfect Match is an "above and beyond agency." We had an interview with them (along with probably 6 or 7 other agencies) and realized that Susan and Ruth were perfect. They had gone through the process before themselves, they were great communicators, extremely knowledgeable, and genuinely good people. Another thing that was important to us was that their prices were in line with other agencies, if not a little less than what we were seeing. I will note that fees are always changing, so if that's important to you, do your own research because what you see online for agency fees and other aspects of surrogacy has changed in the last few years. Overall they had a very organized approach to the process, with straightforward steps along the long journey. In the beginning we were very unsure of everything and overwhelmed. It's obvious that they know what they are doing and have had plenty of experience. One thing I really appreciated about A Perfect Match was that they got back to us with any questions really quickly. It was obvious that they were invested in our success and concerns. They were very good at helping us work through hiccups along the way. And let me tell you, one thing that is universal with surrogacy journeys is that there will be unforeseen problems and speed bumps. We found a surrogate within weeks. I don't want to imply that this is normal, but we ended up having a wonderful match that met all of our needs. After we talked with two other surrogates, Ruth and Susan figured out the type of person we were looking for. One thing in particular that was very helpful was their knowledge of insurance issues. We had quite a few setbacks and challenges with insurance and they were knowledgeable in their own right, and put us in contact with experts when needed. They also helped us find great family lawyers. Some advice I have is to concentrate on your next steps and don't get overwhelmed by the entire process, which will take a year or two depending on your situation. Focus on what you need to do now and let Susan and Ruth guide you. (Also just want to say we ended up with an amazing healthy little boy and will be using them again in a year for our second!)

We were in tears many times because everybody changed their tune once the pregnancy seemed safe. The surrogate refused to work around our schedule for appointments and changed doctors without any notification to us, and the agency was of no help to us, despite prior agreements. They bullied us into placing extra money in the escrow account that we could not touch for a year after. That was about $27,000 just sitting there for no reason. They threatened the custody of the baby through a legal letter if we didn't pay more than what was agreed, only to have that money just sitting there. They preyed on us in a vulnerable time. We are not rich, but we just wanted a baby. They didn't have enough staff as our contact, Jessica, was pregnant with her own surrogacy at the time. We were left hanging a lot. This is too sensitive a process to have people handle it with such little care, adding way more stress to this already difficult process. We are not difficult people, but we just expected honesty from everybody, and we were let down.

Writing about a bad experience with Positive Surrogacy, basically a bait and switch…read more Around 2023 we were looking for a surrogate, and eventually found one with Positive Surrogacy. The process was basically they propose profiles, you show interest, they set up a meeting between you (parents) and surrogate to chat and set expectations, everything went fine. This is mostly free or a very modest fee. Then, once the "match" is official, the entire fee for the surrogacy agency is due, which was around 25,000, this should cover the entire journey, coordination with the surrogate, clinics, etc. Well, the match was formalized and paid for, a few weeks after we paid, the surrogate backed out due to personal reasons. The match was formalized end of November, 27 2023 and the surrogate backed out January 2024. This is where problems started. The agency then sent other profiles they felt were good enough, but folks need to understand that the surrogacy process is very personal and emotional, you can't just bait and switch. We kept asking if the original surrogate would become available again and got evasive answers, but 'hey, here are more profiles'. We want to work with surrogates we feel comfortable with, regardless of agency, we found none of them acceptable. We've been asking for a refund, they state that once the match is done, the fee is non refundable, which is understandable if the parents want to back out, or there are other major forces, but in this case, basically the match was undone weeks after being formalized and paid for, no work post match was done, ie, the surrogate had no medical procedures (legal contract with surrogate was pending psychological and medical clearance, which she never even scheduled), etc. It felt much of a bait and switch 'hey, here's an awesome surrogate', we match, pay and then 'oh, sorry, surrogate not available, but we keep the money'. As I said, they offered other surrogate profiles, but none came close to the one we had matched with. Other than finding surrogates and a matching call, the agency basically didn't do any other work for us.

Our surrogate was a perfect match. Any bumps in the journey, Expect Miracles helped us get past them. People have to realize that there are huge financial and emotional risks with surrogacy. There are no guarantees that you will ever have a baby in the end. I have a lot of sympathy for people who run out of funds and cannot have the family they dream of. I have witnessed this scenario with many people over the years. In the end surrogacy is an expensive solution to having children, and Christy and Jon and their employees have helped many of us realize our dreams.
