The wetland is a cooperative venture proposed and designed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department,…read moreengineered by the Soil Conservation Service and funded by Peter Storer and the Storer Foundation through the Ducks Unlimited MARSH donor program and the City of Cheyenne, Stage II Wetland Mitigation Fund. This project was completed in the spring of 1992. The project is a small, but costly, step towards offsetting the catastrophic losses of wetlands occurring in North America and around the world. The project was designed to improve resting and nesting habitat for waterfowl and water birds and provide yearlong habitat for wetland associated mammals. This objective was accomplished by creating additional open water area through a series of dikes and ditches and improving water management capabilities by constructing and redesigning water control structures. The project site hosts a wide variety of birds including white-faced ibis, American white pelican, osprey, American bittern, snowy egret, marsh wren, great-blue heron, Canada geese and locally common species of ducks. Muskrats, mink and raccoons use the marshes and wetlands and species such as mule deer, pronghorn and red fox can be found on the upland areas. The area is open to the public year-round. However, best wildlife viewing opportunities occur during the spring when the greatest number of migrant birds are visiting the area, and late summer and early fall, when young mammals and birds are old enough to become active. During your visit please remember that this area is home to the animals you see here. Respect their privacy by causing as little disturbance as possible to them and their habitat.

Saw mule deer and elk just about every day. Was bow hunting for elk and not close enough for a shot. My guide Chance was great. Was a great elk experience. Lodging was above a barn. We got there early so we cleaned the place. Your close to the horses so smells like horse crap and flies everywhere. Room was good for four but can sleep 7-8. Would have been crowed with more. No screens on windows so you cant leave them open or youll be carried away by flies Never came to clean or refill toilet paper during stay You gotta love the rat trap in kitchen. Literally a rat trap on floor. And fly paper by the light that hasn't been changed in years. Breakfast was cereal. Lunch was self made sandwiches and dinners were cooked by guide ok but nothing to rave about Stairway out of barn was death trap with no light and shin splitting rebar sticking up at bottom of stairs. Owners were non existent except to collect check and say goodbye. I was thrown off horse. Never asked by owners how i was. My guide Chance should be sought after by other outfitters. Because he was way more skilled and professional then owners russ and mike. Recommend looking elsewhere for elk hunt.

The horses were great (incredibly fit, moved along at a fast pace through the roughest of territory, but safe and obedient) and Russ (company owner) and Clay (head wrangler on our trip) were very friendly and made sure that we had a good time. We rode in for about 4 -5 hours to a previously established base camp, with large tent, cots & mattresses, and then went on day rides and fishing from there. While I would not classify the base camp as luxurious (the company's focus is on hunters interested in getting into and around the backcountry, with the basecamp as a place to eat and sleep when not hunting) it was comfortable enough after a long day in the saddle, and the food was plentiful. If you love horseback riding and the wilderness, this is a great way to enjoy the two together!
