We scheduled a day in Rome with Drive in Rome. Our driver Carlo picked us up right outside of our cruise ship and we were on our way to Roma! Our whole group thought he was so great. We had a really awesome time and Carlo was super knowledgeable, telling all about the history of different places and other Italian tidbits. We learned so much about all the places we went. Canceled last minute! We were called at 8:30 pm the night before our tour. They failed to book enough passengers so they canceled us with short notice. We were on a cruise ship and had to scramble to get to the shore excursions desk by 9:00 pm to figure out a new plan for the next morning. I booked this tour 11 months ago so to get canceled literally 12 hours before pick up time left me ZERO time to make new plans. read more

Our cruise stopped in Civitavecchia, and rather that make the 90 minute one-way trip to see Rome again, we decided on finding a private tour around the port area. We found an appealing tour offered by DriverInRome, "Countryside, Castles, And Cute Villages," a 9-hour trip visiting 3 medieval towns and a castle around the nearby Lake Bracciano. I offered other cruise passengers the opportunity to join the tour, and ended up needing two 8-passenger vans. Let me start by saying our drivers, Riccardo and Costinel, were terrific---both very outgoing and spoke fluent English. I was in Riccardo's van, so I can speak very highly about him in particular. Riccardo grew up in the area and knew it like his backyard, enough to know to take some back roads when we hit construction traffic. The three towns, Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano, all had historic town centers but were still unique in their own ways. We loved having free time in each stop, like enjoying cappuccino and a pastry in a sidewalk cafe, strolling through a street market, strolling up to a hilltop church for some great photos, and watching a clutch of toddlers in a day care class all holding onto a rope while walking the cobblestone streets like ducklings. The scenery was fantastic, and the towns usually had high points to get some great photos. The castle was in remarkable condition, and gave you all the flavor of medieval aristocracy. During our walk through, we heard a bit of a scream and looked up along one of the castle walls, realizing that a young man had just proposed to his lady fair (she said yes). She was still trembling as we congratulated them as we passed them on their way down. The drivers also took us to a great little restaurant which they had to research for us, because on a Monday in this region many businesses are closed, including many restaurants. Know that drivers are not tour guides---in Italy, guides need to be educated and certified, so Riccardo could not guide us through the towns, but we knoew that in advance. But what he can do is give us his knowledge of the areas while we're driving, such as sites to see in the towns and history of the area, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Later in the cruise, we were on tours that had groups of 35 people, and having a private driver and exploring on our own is our much preferred way to explore. Riccardo and Costinel were terrific hosts, and all 16 of us had a wonderful day seeing the authentic Italy and making new friends. I wholeheartedly recommend DriverInRome. read more

We were taking a cruise and booked a custom package with numerous tours and transfers, mostly in Rome and Civitavecchia. We flew into FCO airport and ROBERTO picked us up. He gave us a quick 1-hr tour of Rome on our way to our hotel. He was terrific! He showed us ALOT in 1-hr and was able to bring us to a wonderful cafe and gelataria. The next day, we had a transfer to Civitavecchia cruise port. CLAUDIO brought us to the cruise terminal. He has special drop off access and he dropped us off right at the terminal. *If your driver doesn't have special access, you'll get dropped off at the main security drop off which it is about a 2 mile walk to the specific terminal of your cruise*. *Make sure your transfer operator HAS special access*. During the cruise, one stop was at Naples. We used DriverInRome. GUGLIELMO was our driver AND guide for the Amalfi Coast. We left immediately since it's over an hr drive to the first town of Ravello. He grew up and lives in Naples and was a great guide. We stop at a scenic place overlooking Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. Once we arrived in Ravello, we were able to walk around and WE LOVE RAVELLO! Gorgeous! We stopped in Atrani, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. We had a great time! When our cruise was over our transfer driver was MARICA. She was nice but spoke very little English. The next day we had a full day tour of Rome with ALISANDRO. He grew up in Rome and knew EVERYTHING about Rome. He booked a private Vatican tour for us. INCREDIBLE! He showed us the Colosseum, the underground Catacombs and so much more! One of the best guides we had. LOUIS was our last day transfer to the Airport. From the moment our small group of 4 disembarked the NCL Epic in the Port of Naples, Italy, Claudio was on time and eager to show us the many sights and experiences in Positano, Sorrento, and Pompei, with many stops throughout. We enjoyed places we would have never seen via a large bus. Claudio was very friendly and informative. When he handed us off to our Pompei guide, we knew we were in good hands there as well. She (I sadly cannot remember her name) enlightened us to many facts and stories about Pompei and its tragic demise. I'm very pleased that we chose DriverInRome for this excursion! He was a fun guy to be around, and he talked in depth about Italy's rich culture and history while enroute to the Colosseum in Rome. We enjoyed our time there, bypassing the long lines to get in. Next, he showed us the spectacular Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. Wow! Our next stops were the Piazza de Spagna (Spanish Steps), the spectacular Pantheon, and Obelisco Agonale at Piazza Navona. Beautiful! After an awesome lunch at Dino's & Tony's Hostaria, we were handed off to another guide (Sadly, forgot her name, too...) for our afternoon tour of Vatican City and its treasures. We were very relieved to be fortunate to bypass all the long lines, and we saw all of the spectacular stuff I'm sure the bus tour folks never fully experienced. Back with Alessandro, our final stop of the day was at the overlook at the Dell'Acqua Paola Fountain. It was an awesome stress-free day! When we disembarked the Epic in Livorno the next morning, Alessandro was awaiting us once again, ready for a new day of discovery. Our first stop was Pisa, which we enjoyed. From there we made our way to Florence, stopping at Piazzale Michelangelo for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Once in town, Alessandro handed us over to Eliza. After a quick lunch, she got us into the Galleria dell'Accademia, again bypassing all the long lines. Eliza was friendly, energetic, and informative as well! The Basilica di Santa Maria del Diore was beautiful, as was the Piazza della Signoria. Enjoying Ponte Vecchio Bridge, with its own rich history and beauty, was a delight. We bade farewell to Eliza, and Alessandro swept us away to Basilica Santa Croce, Italy's most important church. Words cannot convey how one feels when visiting these places. In conclusion, we were beyond satisfied that we had chosen the best possible method for touring Italy within the short timeframe we had. We booked 2 tours with Driver in Rome, one was a private tour of Basilicas in Rome and another on a different day was a tour of Pompeii and the Amalfi coast. We were a family of 15, had teenagers and a 7 yr old and one of us in a wheelchair, they catered to all of our individual needs perfectly! Amazing!!!!! Friendly, safe, helpful and knowledgable. My husband and I hired them 3 times while in Italy. Our first was a pick up from the Rome airport for a 1 hour tour then drop-off at our hotel. Marco educated us so well I felt like I knew Rome before I got there. Our next adventure was from Rome to Positano, a 3 hour ride. We had he time wrong but Stefano just waited and never charged us extra. Our ride was very comfortable and again received a lot of knowledge. We spent three weeks with Driverinrome throughout Italy and Sicily. I worked with the office on the itinerary. and they provided drivers and guides everywhere. (We picked the hotels). We were picked up at the airport in Naples and from there for three weeks we were driven everywhere until we were dropped off at the airport in Venice. Everything was A-1, excellent. The cars were all Mercedes SUV's or sedans and were spotless. The drivers were careful and personable. The guides were knowledgeable and personable. After much research I chose Driveinrome to transfer my group from Rome to Florence. We asked for stops in Siena and San Gimignano and a lunch with some wine. Well our driver Gianni showed up at our hotel right on time and loaded his comfortable van up with our luggage and headed out of Rome. He was a great conversationalist and a very good driver too. He provide just enough information on the areas we drove past without being intrusive. We had an hour in Siena which was enough to see the Piazza and Duomo. Then on to San Gimignano where we spent about 45 minutes. Enough to get the flavor of this mid-evil town. But then, our transfer took a turn. Gianni took us to lunch. No ordinary lunch. It was a wine tasting lunch at the Tenuta Torciano winery where we walked into a private dining area. Our table was set with 32 wine glasses for the four of us. Lunch included a beautiful antipasto, minestrone soup, and lasagna with béchamel sauce. All the time being served 8 different wines at the cost of only $30 per person. We were very happy. Our tasting lasted about 2 hours. This far exceeded our expectations. Gianni then safely drove us into Florence where we sadly said good-by. read more
