We were in Indian River on a family vacation, and we decided to come to Drost's 30 minutes before they closed. Even that late in the evening they were cheery, helpful, and didn't make us feel rushed. We came in with 4 kids that wanted ice cream. We were pleased to see they serve Ashby's ice cream and it was all delish! The portion sizes were really good for the price too! We also purchased some from the chocolate counter too. The star was the chocolate orange peels and the lemon truffles! So yummy! They need to change the name of the place on Yelp to Drosts Ice Cream and Chocolates, because the ice cream here is da bomb! They have it made for them at a creamery in Petoskey. My daughter was looking for a sweet treat. We gave this place a try. It was really hard to walk by all the chocolate delicacies in the other displays. She ended up with the Mackinaw Fudge ice cream was so creamy. The service was very good and attentive. You have quite a few choices to sit outside. We will have to make it back again when we are in Indian River again. read more

Came here looking for fudge and was not disappointed. Bought a pound of chocolate cherry and a pound of peanut butter as a thank you gift and then I saw something labeled "penuche". I'd never heard of it but found out some great information and a bit of a history lesson. I had to try and I'm glad I did. I don't like fudge normally but this was very different. I definitely recommend this over Mackinac fudge. The whole store looked delicious but we made our escape before we got ourselves in trouble lol read more

Drost's is the best ice cream and chocolate shop. The chocolate is of the highest quality. No wax in this chocolate. Always made fresh! Yum! Try the turtles. The dark chocolate is both rich and delicate at the same time. My favorite is dark chocolate cherry pecan bark. Drosts has a large variety of candy, chocolates, fudge, and ice cream. The ice cream was so delicious that we went to Drost's twice while vacationing in Indian River. They really pack the bowls and cones with large scoops of ice cream, and don't hold back with the toppings on their hot fudge sundaes (my favorite!). That's how you know you're at a good ice cream shoppe--when they are generous with those toppings. The interior is adorable, decorated with antiques! They also have "Dippin Dots," and people actually go there for it. Why?! They have such good real ice cream! read more

Forget about that Mackinac Island fudge. On your trip to northern Michigan stop at Drost's instead!!! The fudge is creamy and delicious, far better than anywhere else in the state! The service is friendly... with a hint of comedy at times. ;) I've tried a few of the other chocolate confections. The cashew turtles are great. The ice cream is fantastic, too! Scoops of awesome refreshing flavors on a warm day...the best! Drost's is a must try. read more

I live outside of Washington DC and have been going to Drosts for several years now when we visit my parents in Topinabee. We initially went to Drosts when my wife and I wanted something special from northern MI at our wedding in Key West, FL and Brett was able to put together truffle party favor packages for each guest at our wedding. He took care of it all and shipped it to Key West in insulated packaging and they arrived perfect - they were a hit. My two favorites are their dark chocolate pecan turtles and chocolate covered potato chips. Skip the island fudge shops and hit this place up instead. read more

I go to Drost's every year when I travel to Burt Lake State Park in Indian River. Every single night of my one-week stay includes a trip to Drost's -- it's that good. The staff is EXTREMELY friendly, the ice cream is amazingly good, and they are very generous with the toppings -- especially their butterscotch topping, which is my faovrite. Don't miss out on at least several trips to Drost's if you are ever in the area. You will not regret it. read more

The candy is always outstanding, the customer service is top notch and it is always fun just to look around the shop and see what good stuff they have for sale!! History

Established in 1976.

Drost's chocolates was founded by Eric and Marie Drost. Using old family recipes dating back to 1887, Drost's quickly became known for it's high quality fudges, truffles, butter creams and so much more. After about 10 years of ownership, it was sold to a new family. Since then, the store has passed to many different owners but the heart of the store always remained as the original recipes and techniques were passed on to each new owner and are still used today. The newest owners, Craig and Julie Waldon, take pride in keeping with tradition, as well as creating a welcoming atmosphere for their customers. Since their purchase in May 2016, Drost's has undergone a few improvements. Outside boasts the addition of a patio, a wheelchair accessible ramp and an expanded parking lot. Inside, they have really opened up the floor space by adding new shelving and creating a viewing space were customers can watch Tim, the Chocolatier, make fudge, caramel, brittles and more on the marble slab.

Don and Kathy Kilwin started the company some time ago and later sold it. New ownership later grew the company with franchises in many states, sprawling from Michigan to Florida and out west to Colorado. This particular location can be tricky to find as it's located inside the Hallmark store. During our visit, I found out this is one of two locations grandfathered to be allowed to have a store within a store. Specialty ice cream and chocolates and all so delicious. Try them all! Their specialty is Mackinac Island (Michigan) fudge, which are offered in several flavors. (Tip: Fudge is not chocolate so don't eat large quantity of fudge in a single sitting or you'll be sitting elsewhere with a rumbly in the tummy). Many Kilwin stores create some of their delectable chocolate products in store. You can watch them in action making in-house fudge or other treats. NOTE: Ever want to know what's made in-house and what is shipped in? Just search on products for the Kilwins label. If it lists an address for that local store, then it was likely made there. If the Kilwins label lists a city of "Petoskey, Michigan" then it was likely shipped in - but still delicious. Just know Kilwins chocolate is a little more expensive than your ordinary Hershey bar - but the quality is so much greater and well worth it!

I recently stopped in on July 4th and picked up a dozen red, white and blue decorated cookies to bring to a friend's house that was entertaining. I found some with fireworks decorations and some with smiley faces. Needless to say, they were well received by the hostess and the guests enjoyed them. Even on a busy holiday morning, there were delicious looking donuts and baked goods, and the aroma brought back all kinds of emotions from my childhood too. Johan's is old school but that never goes out of style. Service was not the friendliest but it was not bad. You order at the counter and pay and you're out... easy peasy. While I took my cookies to go, there are some tables outside if you wanted to sit down for a few and enjoy your treats there. If you're in the area, definitely stop by Johan's for a tasty pastry (or two) and cup of coffee!

My favorite crepe is the buckwheat with spinach, feta, mushrooms (and sometimes egg). Omg to DIE for. The employees are friendly and helpful in suggesting something if you're unsure. You will not regret going here, just make sure to check the hours before heading their way! They do have indoor seating as well as outdoor. They take Apple Pay, cash or card. The inside is decorated cutely and gives you that "bakery vibe". Love this place!!
