All the employees were really nice. They actually have two shops on the island and I bought fudge from both. They also have excellent chocolates. I don't even like fudge, and I loved the fudge at Joann's Fudge. If you're on Mackinac Island in the fall, when they make pumpkin pie fudge, you need to get some! It tastes almost exactly like the filling in a pumpkin pie! It's kind of crazy. In case you didn't know: Fudge freezes beautifully. The person behind the counter offered that bit of information when I was debating whether or not to buy a couple of boxes of fudge to take home. When I got home, I put the boxes of fudge into a freezer bag and left them in the freezer for two months. After defrosting for a day, they sliced up just as fresh as if I had bought them that day. Also kind of crazy. If you're lucky, you'll get to see the workers make fudge on the marble slabs. They do it so proficiently that it's mesmerizing to watch them work. It's cool to see a puddle of sugar and flavoring turn into a solid mass of candy. Crazy! Along with many different flavors of fudge, you'll find other candies and sweet treats like truffles, taffy, toffee, peanut butter cups, and many others. Friendly service with plentiful samplings. Didn't hurt that we had a coupon for it as well and that it wasn't a chain like some of the other fudge shops. Ultimately, opted for the dark chocolate walnut cherry fudge: three of my favorite things combined into one glorious block of fudgy goodness. The dark chocolate made it so that it was not as sweet as the other fudge flavors; the cherry added some sweet and tartness; and the walnuts added texture to the mix. The fudge was still good after a week. We were told to leave it at room temperature for up to two to three weeks and after that, it can be frozen. It didn't last that long. Whatever you do, DO NOT REFRIGERATE IT as it dries out the fudge. They have live fudge and peanut brittle demonstrations, so of course, the place always smells amazing. Of all the fudge shops on Mackinac, we keep coming back to Joann's because of their unbeatable customer service. Most fudge shops on the island aren't dog friendly, but the staff were quick to welcome our golden retriever in and give him some pets. An employee was working a new batch of fudge on one of the marble cooling tables, and he offered us a sample while we watched. And this was a BIG sample, not just a sliver like when you ask for samples at some other places. The fudge at Joann's is also top quality; it's very moist and not too "grainy" in texture. The general consensus is that Joann's Fudge is superior on the island. I'm not too sure why. I've been in here twice just to browse the fudge selection. They do offer quite a few flavors. There are a lot of confessionery stores on the main street and they let you sample their fudge. They all have good fudge with a little bit different variety in flavors. Ahh. Fudge. For my yelp friends that may have never made it to the Upper Peninsula, and to the magical Mackinac Island, you have no idea what fudge really is. The fudge you get in Texas, doesn't hold a candle to the fudge you can find on Mackinac Island. And let me tell you, there are a lot of options. I believe 10 shops on this small island, but who has the best? For years I believed it to be Murdicks. Only because that's what I was brainwashed to believe throughout the years by purists and tourists alike. But alas, move over murdy. I have a new love. Joanns fudge is very creamy and not overly sweet. You can actually eat more than one bite before feeling like you need to book a dentist appointment. What drew me in was the array of flavors they offer. Boasting 23 year round flavors, I believe they offer the most variety on the island, as well as some yummy ice cream. The price was also right too, and after looking at other prices around the island, I realized that Joanns is the cheapest! Score. I opted for orange truffle (a flavor I've never had anywhere before) and my boyfriend went with cookie crunch. Both were spectacular. Throughout our sampling, we found out that double dark is the way to go, but had already purchased enough. That double dark is so good, it almost tastes like a fudge brownie. This came up on Yelp as the best-reviewed fudge store on the Mackinac Island, so naturally we had to visit it. I liked the variety they offered but I was hoping they had been a little bit more adventurous with the flavors and added some limited-time flavors - for comparison, Sanders offered watermelon fudge, Kilwins had orange fudge, Ryba's got strawberry fudge and I could go on and on. They were nice and allowed customers to sample some fishes before purchasing them, and their dark chocolate salted caramel was outstanding. I also tried their butter pecan which was pretty good but tasted very similar with their vanilla but only with the addition of pecans. So I went with 1/4 pound of the classic vanilla, since I'm a huge white chocolate fan. Each slice was about 1/2 pound but you can order it by half a slice. We also got 1/4 pound of the dark chocolate salted caramel. It was about $10 give or take per slice. read more

JoAnn's is #1 on Yelp when searching for fudge and I agree, though I didn't do much comparison. The shop makes 29 different flavors ranging from standard chocolate to Kahlua and butter pecan and beyond. You can sample, but I went ahead and picked the chocolate pecan, which I gave two thumbs up. So creamy and delicious! One slab ran me about $8 after tax. It's wrapped in a box with a knife so you can cut it and enjoy on the go! JoAnn's is unique in that it does wedding favors and corporate gifts, and it ships fudge year-round. Find a second location in Mackinac City near the boat docks. If nothing else, you must step foot in a fudge shop while on Mackinac. It is truly a step back in time and resembles a candy shop of yesteryear, and you can see the product being made in front of you.
