The donuts are large and thick. While they were doughy, they were done well and quite tasty. I think the appeal is in the density of the donuts I sampled, which are worth it. I also picked up a bag of day old bagels, and they are fabulous. Quite tasty, and toasted are a very nice breakfast item. This place seems to be a cornerstone of the Petoskey area and well worth it to me. I cannot vouch for the negative reviews, and this was my first time visiting and partaking in the delectables. I love to visit Johannes as we're traveling in this part of Michigan. Today we stopped in on a Sunday morning. It was busy with half a dozen people in the queue. You have to be ready to order right away when you step up to work with your service person. it's important to know what you want. Make decisions quickly. I like the variety of pastries. I wish they could have cinnamon buns. we picked up cherry turnovers, apple fritter a few donuts and some cookies. As usual the food was wonderful: five stars. Hooray Johan! Some of your designs are incredible. Especially the Halloween cookies! Clever and artistic. The donuts are addicting. Hooray Johan! You don't skimp on filling a long John. Creme, custard, jelly...all terrific. The assortment is devastating, too! Boo Johan! While your bagels are perfect every time, all the flies that congregate on and around them is a real turn-off. Yep, I still eat them, but I wish you could figure out a way to keep the bugs off the food. Service: Brian in the morning is the best. ALL the experts are wonderful to visit with. They're quick and accurate and make for a better experience! Johan's is easily Petoskey's premier coffee and pastry shoppe. I could do an entire review on their joe, featuring my favourite, the Traverse City Cherry Brew. It's a well rounded bakery featuring several cakes, pies, breads and those incredible cookies. I can personally recommend the apple fritters, cannolis and the fudge brownies. The marble rye is great, but the Russian rye is better! On my list to try: all of their dozen pies, The cherry creme cheesecake and the baklava. They also have quite the gluten free menu. Johans offers street parking and large pastries along with coffees and other drinks and treats. There are some moments to buy as well. We loved the size of the pastries, the friendliness of the girl that took care of us, and the festive Halloween skeleton out front. The only thing that could have been better for us is alternative milk to try their coffee (they only had creamer so we got coffee elsewhere) Either way, we were happy they were there. read more

Ordered an almond pastry for a family get- together since we all love the almond kringle. It was dry, crumbly, and yes, expensive - we would have preferred the kirigle. A serendipitously located bakery that serves one of the best cherry pies I've had in six plus years of Northern Michigan vacations. Most importantly, it has an excellent filling and that is very cherry forward -- not too sweet, not too adulterated. And the crust is flaky, tasty, and non distracting. This is not modest praise. I came looking for local breads, and on the occasions in which I dropped by, Johan's usually had a few choices to pick from. I personally enjoy sourdough and darker breads, and I managed to get a sourdough loaf, a pumpernickel loaf, and a Russian rye loaf. Interestingly enough, while the Russian rye and pumpernickel breads were artisanally formed, the sourdough bread was formed in a loaf pan, creating a block of seemingly white bread. The consistency of the sourdough also lacked any artisanal qualities; no crusty exterior, no light and fluffy interior, but a somewhat dense crumb that mimics that of wheat bread. However, what the sourdough lacks in presentation and form more than makes up in taste! I mean, one bite and you know your eating sourdough; the tangy sour taste makes this bread a favorite of mine, and the other dark loaves didn't disappoint in taste either. Overall, the tastes of the loaves are on point, but the texture of the breads could stand for some improvement... Granted, I doubt many come here for the breads, but for the variety of pastries and sweets offered. An assortment of muffins, cookies, doughnuts, and cakes take up all space within the display case. And it seems like every time I come, locals are lined up waiting to order a few treats to take with them. The staff are also very friendly, smiling and greeting returnees like old chums. They also explained some of the differences between their rye loaves for me to help me make a decision (there was a Russian rye and a Swedish rye offered). Although bread may not be what you would expect to find here, this place is definitely worth a pit stop when craving something sweet! read more

They used to have gift vouchers that would only last a year from your purchase date but when I was in there last they actually have gift cards that don't expire and you can use it at the other Johans in Harbor Springs so that's pretty cool at some point I may buy a gift card and gift it. read more

We have been customers of Johan's bakery for over 30 years. However, the last few cakes have not been the normal quality. Saturday we bought a birthday cake that we asked to have decorated for a 15th birthday. When the cake came out it honestly looked like our 15 year old decorated it himself. The decorated cake was ugly, the cake itself was dry and the frosting had a weird taste. The cost for this cake was a rip off. Sadly, we have bought our last Johan's cake. read more

Johans is a cute little bakery on the way to downtown Petoskey. It reminds me of a mom and pop bakery that's been around for years and the quality has remained amazing. It's always busy any time I come - no matter the time of day. The doughnut flavors are endless and they also have pies, cookies, coffee, bagels, and other sweet treats. Their bagels are puffy and fresh, and their doughnuts are HUGE.. especially the cinnamon roll! The price was less than $10 for a bagel with cream cheese, giant cinnamon roll, and large glazed doughnut. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. I've had good things here in the past, but there is literally no excuse for selling gingerbread cookies that are as hard as a rock. Or at least give a warning to the hungry visitor who ordered them for her toddlers to munch on. I tried to soften them by steaming them a bit, but it only helped a little. I understand needing to sell overstocked items after a holiday, but do it via a discount, with a warning... something that shows you care who eats your food. And, as I've never had a long john with "tangy" custard, I really hope I'm not going to regret visiting Johan's anymore than I already do. read more

So disappointed with our doughnuts this morning. I was born & raised in Charlevoix and we would get to visit the bakery once a month growing up. This morning my son & I came in to get doughnuts & rolls for us & other family members. All the doughnuts were completely DRY, so dry I was almost choking, I could barely swallow. We were in the store just before 7am so you'd think everything would still be warm if they made it the same morning! Nope! Everything we got was ATLEAST a day old, but I'd guess 2-3 days. After spending almost $26 on 9 doughnuts and 2 cookies, half of them went in the trash!! Extremely disappointed!! I contacted someone on their FB messenger and they offered to replace them for free if I came back to the store. Which I did not return to get any, why go back to just get more dried out doughnuts and have employees mad? Nope. Just decided to write a review! read more
