I love to visit Johannes as we're traveling in this part of Michigan. Today we stopped in on a Sunday morning. It was busy with half a dozen people in the queue. You have to be ready to order right away when you step up to work with your service person. it's important to know what you want. Make decisions quickly. I like the variety of pastries. I wish they could have cinnamon buns. we picked up cherry turnovers, apple fritter a few donuts and some cookies. As usual the food was wonderful: five stars. I also wish they had a bigger lobby: Four stars. Our service was very efficient and helpful: five stars. we will return and we do recommend visiting John whenever you're in Petoskey.

Hooray Johan! Some of your designs are incredible. Especially the Halloween cookies! Clever and artistic. The donuts are addicting. Hooray Johan! You don't skimp on filling a long John. Creme, custard, jelly...all terrific. The assortment is devastating, too! Boo Johan! While your bagels are perfect every time, all the flies that congregate on and around them is a real turn-off. Yep, I still eat them, but I wish you could figure out a way to keep the bugs off the food. Service: Brian in the morning is the best. ALL the experts are wonderful to visit with. They're quick and accurate and make for a better experience! Johan's is easily Petoskey's premier coffee and pastry shoppe. I could do an entire review on their joe, featuring my favourite, the Traverse City Cherry Brew. It's a well rounded bakery featuring several cakes, pies, breads and those incredible cookies. I can personally recommend the apple fritters, cannolis and the fudge brownies. The marble rye is great, but the Russian rye is better! On my list to try: all of their dozen pies, The cherry creme cheesecake and the baklava. They also have quite the gluten free menu. Come check out their cakes and other items, you'll be an instant fan. As legendary as this place is, I can only muster up four stars due to the flies. Fix that and I'll find a way to give you a ten! Hooray Johan! 11/23

Do not skip these doughnuts if you're in town. Wow. The selection is intense, the flavor is incredible, and they are huge.

Got Johan's donuts while visiting the area, and wow... these are amazing! The donuts lasted a few days even without becoming stale, which is so hard to find in donuts. I would 10/10 recommend!

Display of donuts

Food- sour cream glazed donut and boston cream donut were delicious. Probably some of the best donuts I have had in a long time. Service-was there on a slow day. Was the only customer and service was fine. Ambiance- old school bakery....no frills just great baked goods! Would recommend this bakery for donuts. They had a variety of donuts, cakes, pies, and breads. Everything looked good and you could tell was homemade. Look forward to going back.

Johans offers street parking and large pastries along with coffees and other drinks and treats. There are some moments to buy as well. We loved the size of the pastries, the friendliness of the girl that took care of us, and the festive Halloween skeleton out front. The only thing that could have been better for us is alternative milk to try their coffee (they only had creamer so we got coffee elsewhere) Either way, we were happy they were there.

Donuts from Johann's

Johanns is expensive. We used to justify the price because the donuts were big. The donuts have shrunk!! We got home with 3 long Johns and 3 sour cream. 2 of the long John's are 1 inch smaller than the other and 2 of the sour cream are much smaller than the other. Check the box before they seal it. Otherwise, you will get home and feel ripped off!!!

This place is a must stop every time I am in Petoskey. I love walking up to the building and smelling the greatness inside. The staff is always friends and I was offered a cup of coffee on my last visit. I live in TC and this place is Billy far the best in Northern MI.

Every summer when we are in town, Johan's is our first morning stop. Delicious donuts, bagels and fresh breads. The family favorite is the maple covered cinnamon roll. The kids also love the chocolate covered long John filled with cream. I swear it weighs a pound. We love getting a six pack and splitting it so we can try a bunch of the donuts. Johan's never disappoints!!

I came looking for local breads, and on the occasions in which I dropped by, Johan's usually had a few choices to pick from. I personally enjoy sourdough and darker breads, and I managed to get a sourdough loaf, a pumpernickel loaf, and a Russian rye loaf. Interestingly enough, while the Russian rye and pumpernickel breads were artisanally formed, the sourdough bread was formed in a loaf pan, creating a block of seemingly white bread. The consistency of the sourdough also lacked any artisanal qualities; no crusty exterior, no light and fluffy interior, but a somewhat dense crumb that mimics that of wheat bread. However, what the sourdough lacks in presentation and form more than makes up in taste! I mean, one bite and you know your eating sourdough; the tangy sour taste makes this bread a favorite of mine, and the other dark loaves didn't disappoint in taste either. Overall, the tastes of the loaves are on point, but the texture of the breads could stand for some improvement... Granted, I doubt many come here for the breads, but for the variety of pastries and sweets offered. An assortment of muffins, cookies, doughnuts, and cakes take up all space within the display case. And it seems like every time I come, locals are lined up waiting to order a few treats to take with them. The staff are also very friendly, smiling and greeting returnees like old chums. They also explained some of the differences between their rye loaves for me to help me make a decision (there was a Russian rye and a Swedish rye offered). Although bread may not be what you would expect to find here, this place is definitely worth a pit stop when craving something sweet!

$24 for 2 cups of coffee and 6 regular cake donuts. Not worth it, go somewhere else. No prices posted at point of service either.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to visit until near the end of the day and at that point they had sold out of most of their items, including the famous pepper parmesan rolls. They still had a few items left and we decided to pick up two of them. Kouign Amann ($4.95) - The caramelization of the sugar on this pastry is on point. The bottom has a layer of sugar that has melted into a glaze with extreme caramelization, almost on the verge of being burnt. If it had been left in the oven for a few moments more, it would probably have started to develop an acrid taste. Luckily, it was pulled out at just the right time. Even the sides of this pastry have been graced with sweetness and a top layer of thicker sugar crystals/grains adds an amazing crunch. While the kouign amann may not have as many thin laminated layers as a croissant, there is still an excellent buttery interior which helps balance the outside sweetness. The interior is fluffy and layered well into an even honey comb pattern. This kouign amann exceeded my expectations. (5/5) 3:00 O'clock Baguette ($5.90) - Yikes, this is by far the most expensive baguette I've ever bought. I was kind of dreading it when I first felt the baguette through the bag - it seemed a bit soft and limpy. When I tore into it soon afterwards, I found my concerns to be somewhat unfounded. By somewhat I mean that yes, there is hardly a crust on the baguette, but the interior still exhibits a nice chew and the flavor is very well developed. It's a decent baguette, but nothing outstanding. Perhaps the crust would be better earlier in the day when fresh baked? (4/5) I was definitely surprised by the quality of the baked goods at Crooked Tree Breadworks. I'll have to revisit earlier in the day on my next visit to the area so I can try more of their breads and pastries.
