In October I went to Drunk Dracula in DC for my first Drunk Shakespeare experience, and I laughed so much. If you've never been, just know this isn't your typical theater outing--it's way more interactive, chaotic (in a good way), and just plain fun. When you walk in, there's a bar, but you don't order directly from it. Each seat has a QR code, and the staff delivers drinks right to you, which is super convenient. Once you enter the theater area, you're even given a complimentary shot to kick things off--great way to set the tone for the night. The venue itself is small and really intimate, which makes the whole experience better. There isn't a bad seat in the house. The seats along the stage are bench-style with cubbies underneath for your stuff, while the upper-level seating has stools set behind bookcases that wrap around parts of the stage. The drink menu includes themed cocktails, plus wine, beer, and spirits--expect to pay around $15 per drink. There are also light snacks, but portions are small and a bit pricey, so don't count on them to fill you up. If you do order food, the stools by the bookcases are definitely the best seats since you'll have a surface to put your plate on--otherwise, it's lap dining. As for the show itself, it was fantastic. There's a lot of audience participation, and the actors absolutely commit--including proving they're actually drinking. One thing I didn't realize beforehand is that not the entire cast drinks--there's usually one designated drinker, which honestly makes it even funnier and leads to some unforgettable moments. The performance is an abbreviated version of the story, mixed with plenty of local references that keep it fresh and relatable. The Drunk Shakespeare company also puts on other holiday-themed shows throughout the year, which is awesome. I'll definitely be back to check out Drunk Christmas Carol. read more

We had fun. Id say closer to a Chaucer experience than Shakespeare. Its an audience participation performance so be prepared to be involved (especially front center). Its very informal and yes very tawdry. The actors, God bless them, obviously have formal training but the focus here is on fun, being silly and being drunk so the audience is rationed only short bouts of Shakespearian acting between gags. read more

There so many current nuances woven into the show that makes it hilarious and the props. Please go and have a good night whether solo, date night, or with friends. You'll have a great time. What a fun event! I had been to the one in New York City many years ago and was excited to check out the Romeo and Juliet version. The actors were very energetic, young, and fun. I came here for Drunk Dracula, and it was so much fun! I have definitely heard of Drunk Shakespeare, but hadn't been, so I wasn't sure what exactly to expect. I lined up outside about 30 mins before the ticket time, and there was already a (short) line forming. They were right on time as far as starting entry to the venue. It did get a bit crowded when they let us into the building before letting us into the theater, but it wasnt too bad for me because I was fairly close to the front. You couldn't order drinks before going into the theater, but they did have a water station set up which was nice. The staff was super friendly from the getgo! While you purchase a "level" (each with a different price point), you don't have a pre-assigned seat and they seat you as you enter, so that was another good reason to arrive early. Though, there really isnt a bad seat in the house because of the nature of the show and the size of the performance area. They had snacks and drinks available for purchase. This was operated through QR ordering, which would have been convenient, but unfortunately my phone wouldnt read the code. I asked a staff member and they did have paper menus available for oordering, though I had to kind of flag a staff member down to give my order, and I didnt really order anything after my first drink because it would have been disruptive to flag a server down during the show. I also had to close out at the bar afterwards. This was all very minor, but figured it is worth noting. The actual service was good, though. Again, staff were friendly and were happy to answer questions. And my drink came out pretty quickly. Be prepared to pay $18 per drink. I can't recall what the snack prices were, but they were also a bit pricey (understandable with this kind of thing, but still good to know). The show was absolutely great! The actors were phenomenal - very funny and they had everyone laughing. I loved that there was some audience involvement and that the actors moved all around the space and didnt just stay in the pit (another reason why any seat is going to be a good one). They seemed to be having just as much fun as the audience. I see another review mentioning the humor. Yes, it is raunchy. Yes, there are X-rated jokes and references. This is made pretty clear by the age requirement and descriptions when ordering your tickets. Im not sure why someone would choose to come here and then be upset by that. But I do agree that, if that isnt your thing, you shouldn't come here. You won't enjoy it. I, personally, had a blast and absolutely recommend it for those who enjoy 21+ type humor. So I went for my birthday and it was during pride and this was a great time, funny, and with theme. I've been to NY and now DC. I think DC one was funnier. Not sure if it had to do with the theme. NY the drinks were better. DC drinks were a little rough tasting. I order 3 different drinks and none were good. My friends came as a surprise and they've never been. So it was truly a great outing and time. The actors and actresses were so nice they chatted before and after the show and wished me happy birthday. What a blast! I had a co-worker tell me about this show so when I was up in DC, I decided to stop by. It's a nice intimate setting. It's definitely 21 and up! Not only is here alcohol served (snacks too), but the content is definitely adult. It's really funny. It's a quick rundown of Shakespeare play. You'll have a good time even if you go alone! If you go with a buddy, consider the king and queen upgrade! Definitely look like a good time. Talk it up with your neighbors. There is Wi-Fi but you have to ask for the password. I have T-Mobile, unfortunately, where I was sitting, I did not have internet! You have to order using the QR code and a credit card. Definitely a good time. Uh. Wow. We expected this to be a little rowdy, a little bawdy, a little crazy. It wasn't. It was downright vulgar. Enough language to make sailors run. And the advertised "sexual innuendos" were downright X rated. No wonder they're so adamant about no one under 21. We saw a group that was clearly parents with older children who looked **very** uncomfortable. If this is your cup of tea, so be it, no judgement here. How have I not done this before?!?! My friend was in town and we were looking for stuff to do. She stumbled across Drunk Shakespeare and I thought, "how bad could it be?" Friends, it was awesome! It was very funny, pretty raunchy (don't bring your parents and/or your kids), totally wacky, and a great way to waste 90 minutes. The actors were superb - they were all really funny and obviously great at improv, with excellent comic timing. The gimmick of one poor actor taking shots and then trying to keep it together during the show - brilliant. The drinks were very tasty, with costs on par with any bar in the city. I love the fact that they serve you in your seats throughout the show, so you can drink and enjoy without missing anything. The Bramble and Juliet drinks were great. After all, we did like the show last time. We got there at the last minute, and although we had pad for the 2nd tier, we were lucky to have been upgraded to stage side. There isn't a bad seat in the small house, It was nice to have a front row seat. The show kicked off with shots b the lead actor(and we all had drinks ourselves). There was plenty of Shakespeare, and plenty of ribald and jokes. The players were all pretty good. One gall could really sing and another knew how to get down to some popular hip-hop tunes. The main actor was constantly stealing the show with his set of skills. It really was a great time. They really know how to put on a big show on a small scale. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!! The staff at the Sage, in particular those working the Drunk Shakespeare event, were some of the most rude, callous, and overall inconsiderate people I have ever experienced. I purchased two tickets to the Drunk Shakespeare show on Valentines Day of this year, for my wife and I. Being a father of two little girls, a union firefighter, and a single income household, getting time away with my wife comes only a couple times every few years. Our show was set for 9 o'clock that night, and after our dinner was over, we set ourselves an hour of leeway to make it from the restaurant to the venue. Being that it was only 10 blocks away, we thought this was sufficient timing. However, after 4 uber rides confirmed and then canceled, we made the command decision to run (quite literally) to the show. When we arrived, my wife and I were sweating and out of breath. We made it to the ticket office at 9:12. We apologized to the staff perfusely, explained our situation, and stated that we understood if we couldn't be seated right away, as we didn't want to cause an interruption. We were just happy to be there and enjoy the show. When I presented my tickets to the person scanning them, we were told that we could be seated, but that we would no longer be sitting together. At first I thought they were joking and when I realized that they were serious, I asked them what they meant. The attendant told me that because we arrived TWELVE MINUTES late, they had given our seats our seats away to other people. I asked if whoever was given our seats could be told to go to their purchased seats, and was scoffed at. The attendant stated that this was "not going to happen." After paying for tickets, arranging and paying for childcare, traveling over an hour and literally RUNNING to see this show, I was not going to be allowed to sit with my wife in the seats that I paid for....on Valentines Day! I told the staff that this was unacceptable and that if they would not seat us in our seats, I wanted a refund. They stated that I either had to return the next day (and they do not open until the evening) or call/email them in order to be refunded. I pleaded with 4 different people to just let us sit in our seats. This is when the staff went from being rude and callous to downright horrid. My wife and I were told that if we did not leave, they would call the police and have us arrested for trespassing. My wife and I were in complete shock and she was devastated. Turns out, those working that night are also complete liars! After communicating for 3 days via email, I was then informed that I would not be refunded, as all sales were final. Now I am having to dispute the charges with my bank and instead of making a wonderful memory with my wife, I am writing this review. I really can't put into words how disrespected we were that night and how utterly repugnant every member of the staff was. It's left a lasting impression on the both of us. Don't waste your hard earned money on these entitled, self absorbed losers! read more

Very fun experience. Talented actors, attentive staff, cool location and interesting concept. They start the theme from the moment you walk through the red curtains and they offer you a free shot to get the Party started. We are doing Dry January, so it would have been fun to have a non-alcoholic option (but totally understandable that they don't). Drink was good, although $12 for a small non-alcoholic drink is a bit steep. Easy ordering and checkout process - they automatically add 20% gratuity which is appreciated. Came here last night for the 5 pm show and a was really impressed by all five actors. We were greeted with an initiation shot which was quite tasty. The actors' ability to make improv style jokes and work in politics and current events in a comical way with a Shakespearean plot is truly impressive. I had a good laugh for most of the show. I kind of lost it when they brought out a muppet to play the character of Lenox. The show is 90 minutes-a perfect duration. There's audience interaction, drinking and Shakespeare! What more could you want! Quite entertaining. You can also order drinks and snacks. I'll be coming back to try a different show in the future since no two shows are the same. read more

OVERALL: odd, mildly entertaining. Definitely not very Shakespearean even for a show of this nature There were a lot of childish jokes about sex and way too much screaming. The cursing is a bit over the top even for a comedic piece. I wish the script had been more mature. It's also just so confusing. Most of my row had no idea what was going on. The people who seemed to enjoy it were much older and fit a particular stereotype. The actors were good though, this is definitely not a critique on them. The show is just bad and not for me. If this is your cup of tea definitely give it a shot. There is also a QR code for ordering but the signal in the building is bad. Otherwise service was good. The venue is actually really nice. They put on a Shakespeare play, but one actor has to take 4 tequila shots in a row at the beginning and try to perform the play drunk asf, they pause throughout the show to do impressions, make jokes, and interact with the crowd and also give the drunk actor more shots. We had a great time at the show. The actors come up to you before the show and interact with you. There is great ambiance asnthe rally the guests to make the show fun. If you have back problems highly recommend asking for a chair with a back instead of the brown seats with no backs. O-M-G!! I laughed so hard during this show that I lost my voice!!! The cast is amazing and very talented in what they do. They did a nice job with integrating the audience, BUTTTTTTT I do wish that viewers on the "balcony" level seating also had a chance to be a part of the show. Honestly, the best part of being on the balcony is that if you decided to order drinks/food, you had a place to put it down versus those that bought floor seating had to place it down by their feet. Like I said, you're there for the show and it was so much fun and I would definitely like to see another show. The actors and actresses really get into and make it an enjoyable experience by integrating actual shakesphere lines with a very modern twist that appeases everyone. I will note that if you're a very sensitive person.... DON'T attend. They made some hilarious jokes that I could see in this day and age could come across as borderline offensive. They do also do an auction in the beginning where they auction off king and queen of the night seats. Just leaving now and I have to say that was one of the most entertaining experiences I have had in quite some time! I had a hunch the negative reviews here were people who have not read Shakespeare and after seeing the show tonight, I feel confident in that These actors are SKILLED in their craft. Not only do they know the text well enough to riff and show thrown at them, they know it well with to drunk it down and make it accessible. Shakespeare was never high brow or previous; his text was low brow comedy accessible to the masses. This whole context really and truly understands what he did and presents it in a comical way that is well understood. Tonight they did Macbeth and anyone who hadn't read it in high school would leave knowing the story and what happens in the play. The drunk actor, Kit, was a delight. Absolutely sensational. From the title "Drunk Shakespeare" I was expecting a sloppy rendition but they honored the original then tweaked and twerked it to make it timely and local. 6 extremely talented and hardworking actors sweated and worked their asses off to put on a show Shakespeare himself would have loved, and it looked like they were having a blast doing it. We saw Romeo and Juliet last night and were delighted with a riotously fun time! The setting was intimate with a catwalk-like performance area in the center surrounded by seating all around the room. We sat in the third row bar seats (listed as balcony seats) a few steps above the floor and loved the view with the bar to set drinks/snacks down. The cocktails were tasty though a bit sweet and the pita bread and hummus was a good snack. (They also served peanuts and kettle chips.) The servers were very nice and brought out orders which are placed through a website which worked pretty well but weak cell service often made it difficult to get use. But, more importantly, the performance and cast were hilarious, fully committed, and involved the audience in just the right measure. We look forward to attending again! read more

The best version of MacBeth plotting the murder of Lady MacBeth and of course her ultimate demise. The space is small and intimate. Buy balcony tickets this is not the Kennedy Center, but you can always ask for an upgrade in seating. If there's room you'll get a space. If you get there early, ask about the king & queen upgrade. My husband and I had the best date night at Drunk Shakespeare. We found it via Groupon and found out my parents had also gone on a date night about a month before (my dad LOVED it!). We took Metro down since it's close by the Mount Vernon Square station and walked over. The theatre was so cute and was done circle style (well more of a rectangle) so that you can see what's happening from any seat. The night we went they were performing Macbeth, but the way it works is that one cast member gets super drunk and there are modern references, improv, singing, dancing, puppetry, impersonations, etc throughout. In high school, I was in both a Shakespeare troupe and an Improv troupe, and coming to Drunk Shakespeare was like seeing the love child of both. There are QR codes so you can order drinks and snacks to your seat, which we did. I got a cocktail and my hubby got a grapefruit beer which was DELICIOUS! No hesitation we bought tickets and went, especially after reading all the reviews. You do not need to be drinking to enjoy this hilarious show, but it does make it so much funnier! There were three of us and we were able to get seats just a few hours before. I would highly recommend doing the balcony seats as they probably have the best view of the show. Drinks and lite apps are available for purchase via a QR code at your seat. Drinks come out within seconds! The service was friendly and more importantly the show was great. But the actors were great and the random mix of modern day pop culture with Shakespeare is cool. My recommendation is to get slightly buzzed before going. read more

The actors did a great job of adlibbing and reciting Macbeth! They kept their audience on their toes with all of their snarky quips. Also, the waiters service patrons really quickly after ordering drinks. One con on service is that if you have multiple people on a QR code, just use one card and one tab. My friends order was kicked out of the system. After bringing it to their attention and showing the bar my receipt, they quickly fixed the blunder. The mini black box theater production was very audience participation driven, creating a fusion between the house and stage. Therefore, most of the entertainment and milieu are contingent on who is there that day, and for us, everyone was involved and having fun, so it was great. Overall, the concept is great, and the play was funny. I would say the price is a bit much for it to be as over sold as it was, but that's just a small inconvenience read more

Osama was my favorite! I'd love to see him play a lead role. It was a great show, my partner enjoyed it very much.

I will preface that my review is based on the price I paid: $36 through TodayTix for the last of 3 rows, upgraded to a pretty good spot in the second row due to attendance. It's a fun show. Admittedly I expected it to be like 70% Shakespeare and 30% nonsense, but it wound up being opposite. My show was Macbeth (which it sounds like most of them are), and even having seen the play before and being familiar with the plot, I could still hardly recognize it for what it is. Ordering drinks to your seat is easy with a QR code to scan and a virtual tab. Overall, I would recommend this as a good date night combined with dinner if you can get a good deal on it through TodayTix or somewhere else. It's definitely not worth full price. EDIT: Forgot to add this, but I feel like it's important. I am a huge theater fan and often attend professional productions at both venues in DC and on Broadway. I absolutely did not expect this show to be on that caliber, but it is possible that my bias impacts my review more than it would for a casual theatergoer. read more
