But everything else was a solid 3. Nothing wrong with it at all... But, I was underwhelmed based on my previous experiences. When we checked in, the host was fine. The room was fine. The bathroom did leave some things to be desired. There was not a good place to put your toiletries. We also had to climb into a very deep bathtub to get to the shower... If you are clumsy, like me, you may walk away with a couple of bruises. The house itself was very pretty, and was decorated in a manner appropriate for the property. I would've liked to seen some warm blanket to sit out on the patio with, board games, or puzzles to pass the time. There was only one sofa, and it was not in a cozy little nook where you would want to hang out. The food was fine. The menu is heavy on carbs and sweet breakfast treats. They were executed well enough. But there was not any particular breakfast that knocked my socks off. Again it was fine. The location was very convenient to downtown Asheville. It would be a two minute drive or a 10 minute walk to downtown Asheville. This bed-and-breakfast did not appear to be owned and operated by the hosts, rather an absentee corporation or business. I think that made the difference. Everything was fine, but it didn't have that touch of home that you expect when you stay at a bed and breakfast. For example, when we wanted to use the television, and needed some assistance, when we called the number that was left, the call was blocked. On a whim , we texted Fortunately, they responded right away. But ultimately, after 6 PM you are on your own in terms of staffing. Overall, I can recommend Beaufort House, but I think next time I will try something different.

However, I was expecting this to be a special and elegant experience and it was not. When we arrived during the specific check in time the door was locked and no one was in the front office. It turns out they were showing someone else to their room but we didn't know that. We just stood out on the porch not knowing what to do until someone finally came to the door. There's no reason they couldn't have the front door unlocked during the limited window of check in time. The person who showed us around said there would be "heavy continental breakfast ". However, it turned out the breakfast was probably the very absolute minimum they could provide and still call it breakfast. It was very disappointing. If I'm not mistaken it was only available from 8:30 until 9:30 or something very limited like that. Finally, there was no lotion in our bathroom, only shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap. I would stay there again but I would have to weigh the options of amenities and prices of other hotels. A regular mid price hotel has more amenities than what was offered when we stayed.

Here are a few of my chief complaints: 1) There was no one to check me in when I arrived late after a long flight from California. After standing in the empty front room for a while, I saw a small sign saying to call a number to check in. I called twice before an insolent teen in sweatpants finally showed up to give me my key. 2) The inn adds a daily "tip" for room cleaning on top of an already high bill. (This is one of the more splurgey places to stay in the Black Mountain area.) If that wasn't rude enough, no one ever came by during my three-night stay to clean/tidy the room. The toilet bowl had dirt marks all over it when I showed up and there they stayed for the duration of my visit. No one made the bed. 3) Internet did not work. 4) Breakfast begins late -- at 8.30am -- because the chef has to take his five children to school. Seriously. So if you're staying there for work, as I was, you have to get breakfast elsewhere. That being said, after a lengthy argument with aforementioned insolent teen, the chef prepped me some breakfast items before he left for the night and left them in the fridge. That was very sweet of him.

The accommodations were perfect and we ended up having dinner at the Inn both nights. Food was very good as well as the service. I loved the idea of not having to drive to dinner or having to wait in line somewhere else. After about 930pm, the Inn was perfectly quiet and we slept so well on the comfortable bed in the Music Room. Black Mountain is a very cute town full of little shops and eateries. 20 minute drive to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate. Thanks for a wonderful stay at your Inn. PS the Frogmore Stew was delicious!!!

We booked our 3-night stay to celebrate our anniversary on Airbnb. Search for the Fairy Tale Cottage in Alexander, NC and tell her Taryn and Ted sent ya! Every little detail of our stay was perfect! The owner, Brookes, is one of the most accommodating hosts I've ever met. She had a fire set for us upon arrival, fresh flowers in the cabin, electric blanket and space heater cranked every night (we got lucky with beautiful weather in the 60's during our visit in February) and the most amazing breakfast delivered to our bed every morning. It's hard to pick a favorite part of our stay, but if pressed, it would likely be the breakfasts. We had blueberry biscuits with maple bacon on day 1, shredded pork with lime crema and a poached egg on ciabatta day 2 and chocolate chip orange zest French toast with sausage on day 3. All with fresh fruit every day. We wanted for nothing during our stay. Seriously. Somehow Brookes has thought of literally everything you might need for a comfortable stay. We wanted to roast marshmallows over the fire. Guess what? She had extendable roasting sticks waiting for us. We didn't want to brave the outdoor shower after dark but needed to freshen up. Never fear! Lavender wipes in the room. I need coffee within 10 minutes of waking up or it's not pretty. We made a fresh pot of what I think was hazelnut coffee in the room with the cleanest mountain water you'll ever taste (from the sink on our porch) every morning. She even had mini moos and sugar to go with it. The cabins have power so there is a hair dryer for the slightly high maintenance. I.E., me. Ted hurt his back and needed some pain relievers. There were even ibuprofens in the room, people! See what I mean? She thought of everything! If looking for unique, peaceful accommodations "off the grid" but still close enough to Asheville to stay busy during the day, look no further than Outlander Glam Camp. We arrived as guests and left as friends. Can't wait to visit again soon and often!

The Inn is perfectly located, just a short walk and even shorter drive/uber to downtown. The room we stayed in was adorable and super comfy. We loved the furnishings, soft sheets and towels on the bed, etc. But, the in-room gas fireplace was by far my favorite amenity -- I found myself not even wanting to venture out but rather sit in the room warming my feet by the fire. (Don't worry though, we went out!) Throughout our stay, it was fun to discover all the hidden treats in the common areas. There were homemade cookies and chocolate in every nook and cranny of the place! Breakfast was amazing and prepared fresh each morning. During our trip to Asheville we wanted to experience the city but also have cabin time. Wildberry lodge provided us with the most relaxing and comfortable experience we could ever ask for. Wild berry is definitely a way to get out of the city and just enjoy the quietness of nature (without going too far of course!) The drive itself is around 25-30 mins from downtown Asheville - there are several ways to get here but the new foundland road was probably the best route. It's easy to stay in the cabin and go enjoy yourself in the city during the day or evening. Ken and Glenda were very hands off and so friendly - if you have questions on where to go or what to do they can accommodate everything! The main cabin has multiple rooms - gooseberry and some other room options. This is where you check in, get breakfast, game room, sit on the deck, coffee/cider bar and chit chat with other guests if your heart desires. The best part of our stay was Glenda's breakfasts! Her recipes were featured in an Asheville bed and breakfast recipe book! We signed up for a bfast time the day prior (anywhere from 8am-930am) and she is usually ready whenever we get there! Our first breakfast included - garden frittata, bacon, homemade English muffin, rosemary roasted potatoes and to finish it off - poached pear. Our second breakfast included pumpkin pecan pancakes, cranberry/apple chutney and sausages and ended it with a mixed berry cobbler. Everything was superb and very filling! We stayed in the honey moon suite to get the full cabin - on our own - experience and it was gorgeous! The bed is super comfy, everything was clean and up to date. It was almost like glamping! Only downside to our visit was the drive at night can be a bit scary if you are not use to driving on mountains. One of the first nights it was raining so it was slightly difficult coming back to the cabin from downtown Asheville. Just make sure you have a car and drive safely! After the initial drive you will get use to it and it should be easier' Other than that - this is a place worth splurging on and visiting!' Thanks Ken and Glenda!!

However, the biggest issue is that the property does not currently reflect the photos shown online. When we arrived around 1pm, there was no one available to check us in and no answer when we called. We ended up leaving and returning a couple of hours later after finally hearing back. While waiting on the porch, we noticed several items left out--loose baseboard trim, a broom, a bag of cement, and a detached flexible downspout in the walkway--which immediately gave the impression that the property wasn't being actively maintained. The outdoor areas continued that theme. The side yard and fire pit area looked like they hadn't been used or maintained in some time, with weeds growing through the pebble ground, empty or dead plant pots, and older or broken furniture visible around the property. Inside, there are some pieces that reflect the historic character of the home, but the overall decor felt inconsistent. Some furnishings fit the period, while others felt more like standard, dated pieces that didn't contribute to the charm the property is marketed on. For the price, we expected a more polished and cohesive experience--especially when compared to nearby properties like The Black Walnut Bed & Breakfast, which appeared noticeably well maintained. Overall, we left feeling that the listing photos--many of which appear to be from prior ownership--don't accurately represent the current condition. With attention to upkeep and updated photos, this could be a much stronger experience.

And they kindly had our room ready early for my husband and me because our plane arrived several hours before check in. Karen also had helpful advice on things to see in and around Asheville. Our room was spacious, pretty, quiet, and relaxing. My sister had an adjoining smaller room and it was fun in the evenings to keep the door open before we went to sleep. Sitting on the inn porch in the evenings was delightful. We chose to stay in Montford instead of right downtown at the suggestion of a local friend. While you can't walk outside and immediately have a dozen restaurants around within a few blocks, there are a couple of good restaurants within a few minutes walk and downtown starts 10 or 15 minutes walk away. In return, you get a quieter leafy neighborhood with lovely architecture that's nice for a morning stroll. Plus we got restaurant delivery a couple of times and ate on the inn porch! Note that rooms are on the 2nd or 3rd floor, and there are stairs up to the main entrance. None of us are young and we were fine, but FYI I didn't see any elevators or chair lifts, so I believe you do need to be OK going up and down stairs. Steve was happy to help with luggage, though. Highly recommend The Lion and the Rose.
