I took the 'No More Auto' class from Hector on 4/17/22. I had some knowledge of photography concepts but had recently purchased a mirrorless camera which I was having a difficult time learning how to navigate. Hector was amazing, his knowledge of cameras is incredible. Although he did not have a lot of experience of my particular camera (Panasonic) he was quickly able to figure it out. I learned so much about how to navigate around much of my camera functionality. He was patient, enthusiastic, confident in his experience and excellent at instructing. On Friday I would have never believed that I would ever be able to shoot in manual mode, much less prefer it. By the end of the day Saturday I was confidently shooting in manual mode. I highly recommend the class, not only for the experience this man has for photography concepts but his excellent camera operation knowledge. This was my first time taking a photography class and they made it really simple. I should probably begin with saying that the words "test" and "memorize" give me anxiety. So when I received the emails, and implanted a stern voice with the references to "studying," I started to second-guess going. Fear not, it was really easy. You do need to take the time to review and watch a few videos on YouTube. I had a hard time with the ones that is provided by the school. I could hardly understand the woman with her accent, and all I could focus on was the accent. So I youtubed the same concept videos and it was really helpful. YouTube wasn't enough! Hector is an amazing instructor. You can tell he really enjoys teaching and makes the course extremely engaging. I came into this course with 0 experience and 0 knowledge. I just purchased Sony A7 camera and knew nothing of it. There were several other camera models in the course, and he still specifically helped each and every one of us. After taking two online classes on photography, I realized I was still clueless on how to operate a camera; I'm more of a hands-on learner. So, I did some research via Yelp and found Hector's Manual Mode class with 5-star reviews. I signed up and was super excited for the workshop. Upon arrival at Sunset Park, Hector had a location set up with props, seating, water and snacks. He provided us with a binder full of information that was extremely helpful. Hector is so knowledgeable, patient and answers any questions you have. By the end of the day, I was comfortable shooting in manual mode and will never use Auto again! Cons of the class: For me, personally, this workshop was about 3 hours too long. The first 5-6 hours incorporated a lot of understanding numbers (ISO, shutter speed & aperture), which doesn't come easily for me. My brain was so exhausted from all the info crammed in, that I was shut down when most of the shooting began toward the last couple of hours. In my opinion, this is a two-day class. One day to soak in all the number stuff and then another day to apply that info would have worked better for me. Also, I felt the student to instructor ratio was too high. Hector said he usually has 8 students, which would have been perfect; I think we had 13 students. Toward the end, we did a lot of portrait shooting of students, which was great. But... it would have been nice to have the instructor look at the photos taken and provide instruction/critiques. I felt like we just kept shooting and shooting with no individual critiques on how to get amazing pics similar to the ones Hector took. I was unsure on what to improve on or do differently, so I stopped shooting. There was just too many students for more specialized attention. Overall, a great workshop; I learned a ton. You will get so much more out of this 1-day class vs. online classes and vs. college classes. I look forward to taking more of Hector's workshops. He knows his stuff! read more

I took Hector's Basic photography class last September 26, 2015, Saturday and it's a blast. I've learned a lot of things especially the connection between aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how to adjust it base on the available lights you have. I was able to know the three rules in photography which I don't even know by just reading photography books or browsing youtube channel. The great thing about the class, for me, is able to use my DSLR camera in a manual mode and I really enjoy doing it. It's like driving automatic and manual transmission car. Automatic is good but manual mode gives you the control, satisfaction and responsibility of combining different settings and adjusting all of these settings based on the available lights that you have. By doing what I learned from Hector's class, I am able to get good pictures based on my own creative perspective. If you want to get out of auto mode and be creative in using your DSLR and taking great pictures, Hector's class is beneficial for you. You won't regret it. All you need to bring is your interest and enthusiasm to learn and unlearn everything about basic photography. read more

Yeah you can learn alot on you tube and online but the experience you get with this face to face, hands on, ask a professional right now type of experience is very worth it. This is a very informative class, Hector spends the entire day with you showing you exactly how to use different modes on your DSLR camera to improve your pictures, how to use all the buttons on your camera and what each function they perform. The class I attended was 8 people which was perfect because you really got individual help as well as learning from others questions in a small setting. The price for this course is very reasonable compared to other classes I've attended that were not anywhere near as informative as this one. On June 2, 2018, I participated in Hector's "Get Out of Auto" class. Prior to the class, Hector provides you with some homework. At first (and second) reading, it was very confusing; however, after reading the manual and then the homework again, and practicing what Hector was saying, it began to make sense. That is the key PRACTICE! Before the class - it will make knowing what is going on in the class much easier. Hector is very organized and prepared. He thought of everything needed for the class - seating chart so those with similar cameras were grouped together, props, benches, canopies to keep everyone out of the sun, water and Gatorade to keep you hydrated and chips to snack on. The directions on where to park and where to find him were spot on (if one bothers to actually read them) Hector provided everyone with a 3-ring binder with lots of information and covered it all throughout the day. We would go through sections of the binder and then shoot pictures to practice what we had reviewed. Then review another section, then practice. Hector is SO PATIENT!!!! I agree with another reviewer there is A LOT to be learned/retained in one day and it is a long day - maybe that's a sign I'm getting older - however, that said, everything covered in the class is included in the notebook so I can refer back to it if needed while I am practicing. As with anything - PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE is the key. I am looking forward to practicing and using everything Hector taught us on Saturday and hopeful I will get some beautiful pictures when we cruise the Panama Canal this September - and I shoot in MANUAL - no more AUTO!!!! I will definitely be taking another class with Hector in the future. More than anything, Hector made learning FUN! Just finished the 1 day class with Hector here in Las Vegas. I very much appreciate the opportunity to learn much more about my camera than I had known prior. The "little green box" was my friend, but my pictures were never as good as I would have liked. Now that I know a lot more about Av; Pv; and Manual settings, I already see a clear difference in what my camera can do for me. Having high-end professional equipment and lenses could have been a waste, but I made a New Year's resolution to better understand photography. I had ZERO photography experience going in and by the end of the 2 day workshop I was in complete control of my camera, taking pics I never thought I'd be capable of in such a short amount of time. Hector is very passionate about teaching his art to others. My only complaints are: 1)the weather (the entire class is conducted outdoors) and 2)the class ran late on day two because we got so carried away shooting pics. Its an amazing class... Had great weekend learning about my camera. These classes are not that big, so u can learn more and ask Hector if you need help. Initially I was bit apprehensive sending a check to some one whom I dont know, thinking it was a spam, but its worth the money you spend. You learn a lot about landscapes, portraits, night photography. I have lived in Vegas for 5 years and I didnt not expect me to take some beautiful pics of casinos and architectures. Last weekend I took Hector's Get Out of Auto Mode class in Las Vegas. It was the best decision I've made and was money well spent! I had some knowledge going into the class from a brief 2 hour presentation class, but this goes well beyond that. He helps you understand your camera, and then puts you in situations to help give you hands on experience. It is an all day workshop, but goes quickly. He is very well prepared and creates an area you use for the day. He has a tent and chairs for a comfortable learning environment and provides water, Gatorade and snacks to help get you through the day. You do have homework he assigns the week before, but it helps get everyone to a place where everyone has a similar understanding of the camera, which helps the class progress. When you arrive, you receive a very large handbook in a 3 ring binder of everything you go over in the class, which is great to look back at as you practice. His hands-on exercises helped demonstrate a concept and made it easier to learn and remember. This was probably one of the best classes in general that I've taken and felt like I got a ton out of it. I feel a lot more confident in the pictures I am taking now and look forward to using this as a foundation to continue to grow from. Hector is a phenomenal teacher and a great photographer. If you are even considering taking one of his classes, do it. You won't regret it. read more

I bought my first DSLR camera thinking it couldnt be that hard to use it. I mean, all I have to do is read the instructions. hahah... NO WAY!
