I've passed this place dozens of times always looking to try it out. This isn't a hole in the wall that you come across on any street. Open the door and you feel you stepped into another century. Hard wood floors, treated wood counters, leather seats and an offer for an espresso once you walk in. I've gone to a few local barbers around the area but this one makes its mark. I have had great experiences with mostly Flori and Steve. To start, those barbers are always booked so you won't be able to make an appt the morning of the day you want your hair cut. I have used other barbers who gave me decent haircuts. I have recently stopped going there because the last time I was there, the barber did not listen to what I wanted, I even showed him a pic. He seemed nervous and actually nicked my ear pretty bad. That only made him more nervous and he was about to send me on my way, when I said you didn't finish the other side. He quickly tried to even the other side out, but the damage was done, too much was cut. As I went to pay, Steve told the receptionist not to charge me against my own protest. Despite all of that I still tipped the barber, he wasn't malicious and had received two other haircuts from him which I was happy about. On my way out, Flori saw I was upset and walked over at which time I said I got chopped and showed him my ear. I was going to go back only to Flori but I found somewhere else in Westwood and so far so good plus it's $10 cheaper. read more

I was looking to pay a little extra for a trendier haircut, and since my beard has grown pretty long I also wanted it shaped by a barber, so I came to DSZ barbers and had my hair cut with Alex (farthest chair from the front door on the right). I had a super negative experience and here's why: From the moment I sat down, I felt rushed. I felt like every request I made or preference I pointed out about the haircut I wanted was an inconvenience. I didn't feel relaxed at all. Alex also kept checking his watch throughout the appointment (which are 30 minutes) and I felt like he was doing all he could to get me out of the chair instead of making my hair look good. I felt like he was doing all he could to cut corners so the appointment could be over faster (pun not intended). I also showed him a photo of exactly the hair cut I wanted from the front, back, and sides, and he still cut the sides way too short. I know many barbers have a difficult time with people who ask for haircuts they don't have the hair for, but I've gotten that haircut before a few weeks back while I was traveling, so that was not the case. That's not really a big deal, but he also left my beard looking really messy and uneven, which I had to go home and spend 30 minutes fixing. I left there frustrated and unhappy with my hair, and paid more than 30$ for it. I felt unwanted and not welcomed. There are places closer to where I live that will charge half as much and spend twice as long making sure I leave there satisfied. For positives, the place has good vibes and free espresso. However, I figured that paying more for an upscale 'barber gentleman' genre would translate to better service and a better haircut, but it was all for show. I'm not a very critical person, but I was so disappointed with feeling 'shoo-ed' out the door that I wanted to leave a review- needless to say I won't be going back there. read more

As a man who has not had his beard trimmed in any way for over 2 years I was so impressed by Flori's treatment of another customers beard I had him work on mine. Flori is very personable, flexible, charismatic, funny, efficient and always gives me a great haircut and/or shave. Top notch! Amazing! Wouldn't change a thing!! My boyfriend and I are regulars in Nyack and one night we saw this corner spot right on Main Street totally lit up. When we got closer we could tell instantly it was a barber shop, we were both drawn in by the friendly faces and detailed decor (oh and may I add the cappuccino maker, you can see from across the street). We went in and instantly fell in love with the young couple that owns it. Steve (the owner) was able to service my boyfriend with a cut and shave! My boyfriend looked so relaxed he may have been sleeping! I have never been in a salon/barber that paid so much attention to the details on their customer. Steve made sure that mike enjoyed every moment that he was in his chair. Diane the other owner kept me completely entertained as she filled me in on her and Steve's background in the business (nothing short of impressive) and talked about everyday life! While enjoying a complimentary cappuccino! I swear if they didn't have other customers coming in we would have stayed all night, simply for the amazing service, friendly atmosphere and simply gorgeous detailed truly old fashioned barber shop feeling. So I am a woman (and Nyack resident who can walk to get a haircut,yay!) with very short hair, let's say a very edgy pixie, and get my hair cut here for $29.00. LOVE IT! The price is amazing (they even have a deal where you get 25% off i think your tenth haircut?) and so is the service. My neck is shaved with a razor and hot shaving cream, I am offered an espresso, whiskey or beer when I walk in and my haircut looks totally unique, I have received so many compliments. Before going to DSZ, I was going to a stylist in town but stopped as i was spending so much money maintaining my short hair and the stylist would not cut my hair as i wanted it (again, edgy for a girl and i think maybe he didn't think i really wanted what i wanted). Talk about pampering...Steaming of the face, hot towels, pre-application for the skin, essential oils... you name it... they knew how to do it right...The service was to the "9's"! Been here a few times. This last week will be my last. The haircut itself was okay, no better or worse than I've gotten other places. Which is why I gave it 3 stars rather than 1. If you are paying top dollar for a haircut, is it too much to ask that the barber actually pay attention to you? The haircut today was a special event for me. I had been laid up for over 3 months, unable to leave my house. Last week was the first time I was able to not only leave my house, but walk on my own without a cane. I looked like Howard Hughes and the first thing I did was schedule a haircut and shave to start to feel human again. The barber, Steve, couldn't have cared less. Told him how important this cut was to me, but he was more interested in whose turn it was to pay for coffee, what time a sporting event started, and talking to workmen who were measuring for screens for the windows. Talking to me, he was distracted, couldn't have cared less about how important this haircut was to me, or showed the slightest interest in the nightmare I had been through. For some, maybe this seems nitpicking. But when you are paying $60 (or even $12) for a haircut, a bit of personal service goes a long way. I didn't get it here and I won't be back. read more

I heard about how great DSZ was ever since they opened 3 years ago. I was still tied to my old barber and really didn't want to leave him. Unfortunately, my old barber just wasn't cutting it anymore. The last few times I got cuts from him there were always numerous mistakes whenever he would cut it, he wasn't on time anymore, and was starting to become very forgetful. Basically, my old barbers prime was over and I had to cut the cord after going to him for almost 5 years. Then I finally went to DSZ and I have to say it's one of the best haircuts I ever had! The new guy Edwin is terrific! Very professional, on time, great location, and great atmosphere! This place really knows how to treat their customers well. It's nice getting a complimentary espresso while waiting in the morning. In addition, they have many different high quality styling products for your hair to choose from compared to other barber shops in the area. Steve hooked it up with the best hot shave I've ever had. Have really sensitive skin and usually have lots irritation after a straight razor shave. Went there to get haircuts for both myself and my five year old. First time there. They were initially booked but a cancelation happened and DSZ was gracious enough to call me back and ask if I wanted the appointment. Great atmosphere and Steve really takes his time with each customer, really making sure you're satisfied. My little boy has a cowlick and hair that sticks straight up. Most other hair places (super cuts or great clips) just takes the buzzer right to it and gives him a buzz cut. Steve took his time with scissors and textured my kid's hair. It looks awesome. I can't say enough good things about my experience at DSZ Barbers. The next time I will be sure to call ahead and make an appointment in advance as I can see why they're so busy. read more

I signed up for Yelp just to post this review. That's how bad it was. But first, let me say this: I emailed the shop the day of the disaster to voice my concerns. They ignored it. So I shall now air my grievances publicly. I'm doing this because I have a wedding to attend this weekend and I just looked in the mirror and I look ridiculous. A week and a half ago I went here for a haircut and a beard trim with a straight razor shave. It was my fifth or sixth time there. Every other visit was fine. They introduced me to the guy who was going to handle me. No idea what his name was because he didn't bother to tell me as we were introduced. Whatever. Didn't go there to make friends. But I tried to tell him what I wanted and he was on another planet. I got as far as "scissor cut" and he tuned me out. He cut me off when I told him how long it had been since I'd had a haircut and what I was looking for. He just started attacking my head with his comb. It was like being pecked by a demented bird. It only lasted a few minutes, which was nice, but at the same time a $30 haircut should last more than ten minutes. The came the "shave." They have these old-timer chairs that recline all the way. This dude didn't seem to know that, since he reclined the back part but not the feet, so my upper body was parallel to the ground and my feet were perpendicular to it. I felt like I was in one of those torture rack devices. Then you normally get a procession of hot and cold towels on your face as you lie back peacefully. This bro just took a lukewarm towel and basically choked me out with it. Just pressed on my neck really hard. That was it. Then a few strokes with a straight razor. I give him credit for not cutting my jugular vein. Then, this is the best part: The guy takes my smock off and says, "That's it." Didn't dry my hair, style it, ask if I wanted product, comb it, brush it, ask if the length was OK, apologize for nearly choking me. Nothing. Just, Get out of my chair. I walked out of there looking like a deranged person who had cut his own hair then showered and left for work without taking the time to dry it. The whole experience was 49 bucks plus tip. (Don't ask why I tipped. I think I was in shock from the lack of air to my brain.) As mentioned, I emailed them an hour later to voice my concerns. Zero response. In sum: This place sucks and stole 50+ bucks from me and no one had the courtesy to respond to an email and explain why this happened. read more

I just made a Yelp account solely to give these guys a great review. I went in first thing this morning to get my beard (about 3 1/2 month growth and planning to grow it for a year) shaped up and they did a fantastic job. I had been looking all over Westchester to find a barbershop that looked like it'd be able to treat a beard properly and ended up being led to this place in Rockland instead. I'd highly recommend this place for any other Beardsmen out there, as it's hard to find people who know how to deal with a beard proper. Your beard is in good hands here.
