For starters, the pickings in the area per "chill hip bar" really aren't too spectacular late night. Duck duck is my new go-to place for a chill drink without the disturbance of artsy fartsy types in your face at 2am like at sweet science. Unwelcome attention isn't an issue at duck duck which is refreshing. Also, prices are fair for the neighborhood. Crowd is mixed bag of hipsters yuppies eclectics and neighborhood folk. People who strike a convo with u in here won't bother u if u want to be alone. Quiet enough to have close chat. Loud enough to not be a boring bar. Open late. Nice bartenders, not so attentive but definitely always nice. Cash only but there's a ATM. Ducks in abundance are the theme, and there's a random stairway to nothing which is a great conversation starter if you bring someone there. Chill spot almost every night of the week. read more

At first when you get there you don't really realize it's a bar until you go inside. There's no signage outside and the windows are dark enough that you can't really see inside. When you walk in you realize that it's very spacious and nicely decorated. The ambience was nice. You see a lot of people talking and drinking and then you also have those who prefer dancing. I was there for a birthday party so a group of us found a corner table and sofa to sit on which was pretty convenient. Access to the bar was a little annoying since a lot of people were trying to get drinks and there was only two bartenders available however when we did get their attention they were pleasant. The only reason I'm not giving this location a five stars is because they are cash only which is typical in Brooklyn but really annoying for me since I don't like to carry around that much cash. read more

There's a tattoo parlor to the right of duckduck named Goose. The decor is divey, but comfortable. We had a group of five, and had a couch, loveseat and two chairs to ourselves, with a coffee table in the middle. It was like having drinks in a living room, but we were in a bar. There was a spiral staircase coming down from the ceiling but it was cut off about 7 feet above the floor. Not sure where it leads. There was a dart board. First time I came here a month ago I had a great experience, until a couple nights ago, when me and my friend were rudely yelled at by this average height white male bartender (wearing a silver chain mask holder) who made us feel unsafe and extremely disrespected. We sat outside and one of my friends didn't have her id on her but she wasn't going to drink anything. Me and my other friend went inside to order and he immediately questioned my choice of quantity of drinks, while quickly raising his voice at us and becoming aggravated and extremely aggressive and said if my friend without the id was outside at the table, he was going to kick her out. He runs out of the bar and screams at my friend if front of everyone to leave. Even if she didn't have her id and we thought it would be fine to for her to just sit there, we did not deserve to be traumatized and yelled at like that. I bet it made him feel so "good" and "masculine" yelling at girls, stroking his weak ego. If we were guys he would not have treated us that way. His position needs to reevaluated and fired because of how unsafe made the space feel for us women and especially being POC WOMEN. Seems pretty misogynistic and racist if you ask me. read more

I stopped in to hear a local DJ perform. It's the cutest dive bar I've seen with pews and exposed walls. Cash money only. I just had a bourbon neat and the price was pretty reasonable. No cover on the night I went. I had a blast chair dancing and people watching. The DJ was worth the trip from Chelsea. The staff was cool. I came here on the Thursday night before Halloweekend. I wasn't expecting a full house but at the same time I also didn't expect how many people actually had the same bright idea. I go to bars to socialize, and that night I had a decent pick of the litter (roughly 25-30 different people). The topics of conversation don't matter to me; I can wax poetic about anything from theme parks to Rosa Parks. That said, the drinks do a great job at facilitating my confidence to approach strangers, all while being quite well made. In my humble opinion, this bar captures the essence of what you would want in something "divey"--it's great if you want to just hang around all night and meet people, or if you just wanna have a few drinks with your friends before you go somewhere else in the black void we call Brooklyn, New York. I will close with my final interaction of that night. I met a cool dude; we had very similar interests. Conversation flowed nicely, but that's not what was the most pressing matter. My active listening skills decided to take a backseat to my bodily functions. In other words, something I had eaten (presumably the lamb over rice I found in the backseat of my Uber) finally decided it was time to begin the digestion process. Inebriated, I could barely control the unconscious processes my body wanted to initiate. As I was saying my goodbye to this nice gentleman, I felt something in the lower-back region of my stone-colored chinos. It was warm, like a Grandmother's kiss. Similarly, it was warm like that one area of the local community pool where that nervous child just mysteriously swam away from. I'm talking of course about number two, folks. I caught a whiff and decided I needed to leave faster than immediately. After a bit of pushing-and-pulling I was able to relinquish myself of the conversational clutches I once facilitated. Darting to the bathroom, I had one thought--"What is my game plan if it is what I think it is?". By two employees that double teamed the situation. That was clearly racist, so me, my fiends, and the Mexican guys went to The Graham Bar, which is infinitely better, and closed them out. I came to the bar years ago when I lived in the neighborhood, pretty much because it was the only show in town. No reason to go now. My lady did not like the toddy and the bartender replaced it with a hot cider with minimal eye roll, should have pushed the cider when a toddy is requested, especially when u know your toddy is just water and whiskey with a clove studded lemon wedge (used as garnish and not floating..slight fail) we still cool tho. 6 dollar combo will keep me in here. If you were blindfolded, put in the back of a car, made to believe you were on a plane for a few hours, then brought to duckduck and, upon removal of the blindfold, asked what city you thought you were in, you'd probably be wrong. Between the board games, the cans of Schmidt and the hodgepodge of slightly worn vintage furniture, duckduck has a laid-back funkyness to it that feels more like Portland or Seattle than New York. It's comfortable and friendly, and you're pretty much guaranteed to hear "Just Like Heaven" at some point during your visit. It's not a destination bar; it's the bar you live above. When you walk into this place, you don't necessarily assume it's going to be a dive: there are well mixed specialty drinks, sharply dressed Bushwick-ites, and a warm and inviting environment that doesn't necessarily scream "our-bathroom-reeks-of-stale-beer-urine-and-unshowered-patrons". Then you realize they're slinging Rolling Rock (on tap), cans of Lionshead, and some of the bath-tubbiest tasting well drinks you've ever had as 2-for-1 specials. 3. The decor is actually really cute. Rustic, unfinished wood, mismatched furniture, and cute little school desks (that are not really accommodating to those of us over 5'7...I mean really, my legs were too damn long..) adorn the place, complimented by dim lighting, velvet curtains, and if it's nice out, natural light from Montrose Ave. 4. Bartenders don't have a 'tude, they're not 'too cool for you', and they make decent, heavy handed drinks. I've lived in this desolate wasteland called East Williamsburg for a few years now. Aside from a coffee shop with cinnamon flavored coffee that opens and closes every few months, there are no places to hang out on my block. I remember it like it were yesterday. I was coming home from a catering job at 2 am and it was there like an oasis in the desert. A new bar with reverse happy hours from 2-4 am. Where have you been all my life? This place is great! Their claim to fame is the Schmidt-Faced, a can of PBR and shot of well whiskey for $5. 'Nuff said. When the Duck isn't way too crowded (just on the weekends), it's a very chill spot. They have different board games you can play and even added a gigantic (5 foot tall) Connect 4 you can use. The Duck features new art from different local painters each month and they have different bands play there. Their list of specialty drinks (I haven't tried any of them as I am a whiskey man) is pretty impressive and when it's cold outside, they have hot cider drinks. Claudine and Dennis are great bartenders and very cool. They are my favorites although Jenny and Dave do make a mean Martini and Bloody Mary. read more

This "One" star may seem dramatic, but guys, hear me out. duckduck is solid on a weekday. You can sit down and drink a moderately priced beer. Good, cool, nothing to rave about. Weekends - particularly Saturday nights - used to be great. Like, "Five" stars great. You could roll up at midnight and walk into a guaranteed dance party. Dr. Dre, Outkast ... the usual. Now I feel compelled to write about how terrible duckduck has become. Let's begin: Can we all agree that lazers and horn noises are awful? Can we? My most recent trip (I live pretty close, so I still hold out hope that it won't suck when I go) comprised of a DJ who wouldn't take requests, thought that deep-cuts of Ludacris (or really just any Ludacris) would get people dancing, and insisted on layering lazers and horns over every song. And most of the songs sucked, so just imagine listening to shitty songs distorted to even further depths of awful. It just hasn't been fun recently, not worth it. People don't dance to crap music, and that's exactly what has been going on. Bring back the better duckduck. read more

I am incredibly lucky to live a mere block and a half away from the Duck, yet I do not frequent it nearly as much as I'd like to. And every time I stop in, I leave thinking, "I really ought to come here more often! I love this place!" Duck Duck is the epitome of a cozy neighborhood bar. I wish all bartenders were as nice as Jenny. Their happy hour is pretty sweet, the drink specials are good and they offer a great selection of alcohol in general. At this watering hole, you could find an appropriate drink for whatever mood you're in. I am especially fond of getting hot cider on those cold, wintery nights. The best part about the Duck is the atmosphere. It's pretty much guaranteed that you will hear me say, "I LOVE THIS SONG!" at least once before leaving. It's laidback and completely devoid of pretentiousness. They get festive around the holidays too, it's cute. Don't miss the live bands and trivia nights they have every so often. After coming here a few times- all with different types of groups of friends, I must give it a standard thumbs up. The first time I went, I was a little drunk, and really enjoyed myself. One thing being a New Yorker who was taught how to operate drunk in a bar, when you need to go home, don't take another shot. Just ask your bartender to call you a cab home. When I did this, the bartender said she would call me a cab. I thanked her, and told her I would wait for her to come back and let me know the cab was on its way. I waited. And waited... And fucking waited. I even waited away from my friends who were at a table in the back. 10 minutes later I asked the bartender (who was shutting down the bar) if she called a cab. When you're a little drunk, things get blurry, but unfortunately this situation sobered me up. The bartender said she called and they said three minutes. When I asked her why she didn't let me know a cab was called, she said it wasn't her "job," and that I should have waited outside. "Ok. I find it odd you wouldn't follow up with me. Can you call it again?" "No." Ok- thank you for calling me a cab and not letting me know it actually happened because I was waiting for you to let me know and I don't want to bother you because you were rude to my friends and I earlier when we thanked you for serving us...?! Having just gotten off a shift at my restaurant, I asked to see a manager because I wanted him to know the situation. Of course- total jerk. At this point I was actually beyond sober because when people who serve are fucking rude and insipid to other industry professionals, I want to call the authorities immediately. He defended her, saying she was their best bartender ever, and told me no one gets called a cab at his bar. He insulted me after I told him where I was going, calling me a typical privileged Williamsburg snob. After that, I explained to him that I have been living in Williamsburg for 10 years and I was here before everyone ruined it and that he was being a child. He told me to yelp him and give them a one star because that's what my kind of people do. I left the bar and vowed to never come back again. Months later, I came back with different friends and enjoyed myself. The bartenders were different, and I don't remember what I drank and I made it home great and had a nice time. I went back a week later with different friends and-again- different bartenders, and I had a nice time. I'm not giving you a one star, you asshole owner. I'm giving you three. Extremely cozy and friendly bar, located close to the Montrose L stop. Great selection of beer and liquor, and always has a great crowd. Instead of the usual PBR, they have $2 Schmidt, which is surprisingly decent, and it has a red can with a rainbow trout on it, which I was really pumped about. The bartender (Jenny I'm guessing) was really nice, and she was very attentive and talkative to everyone. Theres a bunch of random furniture and stools in the place, giving it a cool vintage vibe to it. They have half of a spiral staircase coming down from the ceiling in the middle of the place. I think I read about a bagel and drink kind of brunch-thingy, I will have to investigate and report back. Also, I love a place that annouces they will be closed on a future sunday due to the MGMT and Ting Ting show at McCarren. Got to appreciate the local owners with good taste in music. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I live two blocks away, and it is so very sweet to have this dandy bar right around the corner! Sometimes, you have one of those workdays where you just need to go take advantage of some bar's happy hour. Duckduck usually has 2 for 1 well drinks or $1 off everything. And their prices aren't too bad to begin with. The vibe in the bar is cozy, probably due to all the mismatched furniture and obscure art covering the walls. They also have a fun collection of duck-related memorabilia behind the bar. The drink/shot combos are also pretty great - you can get a can-o-schmidt and a shot of varying liquors for $5. Came here last night with a group of friends for a birthday. Birthday girl picked a place that ended up being closed so we walked around close to the area and found this place. IDs checked and inside, I was thrown off a bit by the signs behind the bar, specifically the gold teeth sign. Having lived in NYC all my life seeing things like that make me a little nervous (see: gentrification, appropriation, etc). Even with that tacky ass sign, I had a GREAT time at this place. This place is diverse, and not in the 'if you look good enough you'll see a Black/Latino/Asian person' way. This place is cash only and their ATM charges you $2.00 and even that didn't take away from my frugal ass having a great time. I bought a round of drinks for my friends which came up to the price I usually pay for one drink in the city. Pleasantly surprised. There's benches where you can sit with your group comfortably and everyone dances here. Literally everyone. No judgement, no side eyes, no secret Snapchat videos of you dancing. I saw a lot of compliments being given last night, which is a testament IMO to the kind of place this is. Asian guy DJing last night, wish I remembered his name. Come on positive representation! He played mainly hip hop and R&B but snuck some reggae and dancehall gems that usually don't get played in a party.
