This computer shop sells all kinds of goodies you need to keep the computer running, from printer paper to ink refills, memory sticks and DVDs. The idea at this store is that the more you buy, the more you save; a principle I can live with. The shop is conveniently located where Tawa meets Rosedale Road, there is plenty of parking on site and you can negotiate a good price.

This store used to be located in a really hard to find part of that ridiculously designed Metro building (seriously it's so stupid with its escalators that miss out entire floors!), but thankfully they are now located on Chancery Lane) . Or you can even custom build your own computer by selecting the individual parts that you want in it, and seeing if they are compatible. If so, then the PB tech guys will probably put it together for you, for a fee of course. It certainly can be a lot cheaper to buy a new computer from these guys instead of some of the other electronic stores around. Not only that, but these guys will also repair or upgrade your computer if you bring it in to them. They are generally pretty friendly people who know what they are talking about; yep, they are serious computer nerds.

There are actually two Ash Nets on Great South Road- this particular one is at the back of Southmall, right next to New World. It's been super convenient for me because its a one minute walk to the train station and bus stops. If you want to stay for a couple hours the hourly rates are decent, the screens are huge and the seats are pretty comfy. They offer printing and scanning services, and the staff here even revived my external hard drive for me once! I understand they also do computer repairs, which is always good to know. They've got an espresso machine there if you need a caffeine fix, and fridges of drinks that save you from going down to the supermarket. I've spent a lot of hours here, when I feel like studying somewhere a bit different for a change (libraries get a bit grating after a while), there's a lot of foot traffic here but everyone keeps to themselves which makes it perfect if you want to get lost in whatever you're using the interweb for.

I dropped off my laptop at the Auckland CBD shop to be repaired and was assured, explicitly,…read moremultiple times, that since I bought the laptop at another shop in the chain, I wouldn't be charged for an assessment should I choose not to have any work done on it. I received a call later in the week telling me that the necessary repair was going to cost more than I originally paid for the laptop, and decided not to proceed. I was then informed of a $100 assessment fee. When I contested this the staff member said that he would check some things and get back to me. He never did. Today I went to pick up my non-functioning computer and to speak with a manager. During the course of our conversation he constantly interrupted me, talked down to me, and refused to answer when I asked why he thought this was acceptable customer service. He also came across very much as though he was trying to intimidate me. When I stood my ground he changed from telling me that I must have misunderstood/the staff member must have misspoken to telling me that she had never said anything that could be interpreted as me being able to expect not to be charged and that I was lying. Additionally, he told me that having to wait to speak with him was my own fault when I expressed dissatisfaction at how long it had taken. I'm very unimpressed with the lack of consistency and professionalism.

Said it'd be back soon, then kept changing the story. Went back recently because the screen they replaced has started cutting out when I open the screen too far. Thought it might just be loose, but they said it needs replacing again. Took a week and a half just to hear anything, then they called on the Wednesday and said if I agreed to the repair, I'd have it back Thursday or Friday. Said yes straight away. Called Thursday to check in and now they're saying it won't be ready until next week. Apparently they're waiting on a screen from the warehouse... which is in Auckland, same place my laptop is. How long can it take to move it from one store to the next? They just keep saying whatever they think you want to hear, but none of it actually happens. No one ever seems to know what's going on. They keep saying things like "if it's in stock," like surely they should be able to check? They are forever promising it will be ready tomorrow... 3 weeks later every time! I don't even care if it takes time, just be honest about it. This is the second time I've dealt with them and both times have been a joke. Not using them again.

In this case I'm not sure if its a good thing that I've never experienced buyer's remorse after making a purchase here, as it explains why I keep coming back. There's something at JB Hi-Fi for everyone from games to computer programs to movies, and all at great retail prices too. Now and then they also have one-off sales where everything in-store is cost price + GST- so always good to keep your ears pinned for that one. It's not the biggest JB Hi-Fi branch but I know my way around. The staff here are quite reliable and the last time I went looking for an HDMI cable, the guy there told me about every single one they had, including the advantages and disadvantages. You don't get a lot of great service in retail these days so I take what I can get, and I was very impressed. Even the security at the store here always make a note to say hello and goodbye to all the customers- a little recognition goes a long way.
