Half rack ribs with beef plate.
    Daryn B.

I was impressed. Ordered the half slab with beef to go. The ribs were done the way you would expect. They were juicy and fell off the bone. They had a glaze on them which was a little sweet but still great flavor. Definitely a winner in my book. The beef was okay but probably would go with the pork next time. They had a few sauces that I could add. I went with a sweet red but probably would rather gone with a little more heat. Still good though. I tried the coleslaw on the side. Not KFC sweet which is fine. Still good tasting. The hush puppies reminded me of mini-corn dogs minus the dog. I did this as take out so not much to say about customer service. The place did have a few tables and booths but seems most orders are to-go. This was my first trip to Roanoke and will try to remember this place if I ever get back. The ribs definitely impressed me.

Never did I imagine when I walked into the Due South BBQ Restaurant to have dinner with a friend that I would be having the most exquisite BBQ dinner that I have ever had in my life. Their white building with a pink and black sign with their logo high above looked very nice. And the parking lot all around the restaurant was very convenient. Inside, the place was very clean, well painted and nicely decorated with pigs and cows cute figurines and framed artworks neatly placed all around the interior of the restaurant. The hardwood floors decor, together with the combination of burgundy and black furniture, which included booths as well as tables and chairs, gave the place an elegant yet relaxing ambiance in which to enjoy what would be an amazingly delicious BBQ dinner. As soon as we walked in and young gentleman gave us a warm welcome, a copy of the menu, and invited us to take a seat where we felt more comfortable. We sat down at one of the booths and reviewed the menu, which was very well designed in tones of pink and black, with color photographs of some of the items on the menu, and well laminated. It was a delight to view and read. When we were ready we walked to the ordering counter and the same young gentleman who greeted us at the entrance took our order. Both my friend and I picked a fountain soda to drink and as our main course we both picked a Combo Plate with 1/2 Rack of Ribs and Pulled Pork. As a side my friend ordered banana puddin', and I ordered smoked taters. They also threw in three hushpuppies. For dessert we both ordered a slice of the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie. We paid and went back to our table to talk until they called us to pick up our order at the counter. Each of our orders came in two red plastic baskets on top of a red and white checkered paper. The Half Rack of Ribs in one basket and the Pulled Pork and our side item in another. I first tasted the Pulled Pork. It was juicy and tender, and cooked just right. The pork tasted so good that you didn't need to put any more BBQ sauce on it, although if you wanted they had a good selection to choose from. The Ribs were also cooked well, that the meat easily came off the bone. And they also tasted amazing. My smoked Taters and my friend's Banana Pudding also tasted wonderful. And last but not least, the Hushpuppies were crunchy on the outside and soft and tasty in the inside. The best made and cooked Hushpuppies that I have ever had. Oh and the dessert, a meal is not a great meal without the "Grand Finale" of an amazing dessert. And that is precisely how you could describe the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie! Amazing. What an extraordinary dining experience! I highly recommend this Due South BBQ Restaurant. If you're like me who loves BBQ and good cooking, you will clearly appreciate the wonderful ambiance, amazing food, and excellent customer service of this place. And most likely, just as I did right then and there, make it your favorite BBQ Restaurant of all times!

I shot a video here and completely forgot to take photos, probably because I knew shortly after receiving the food that this wasn't going to be a very positive video. When we got our brisket and it came out shredded like pulled pork I knew we were in major trouble. To add to that, it was super dry...not even the bbq sauces on the table were bringing that cow back to life. The ribs had a ton of gristle and came with a sauce that was not enjoyable. They were even hard to cut through...a major miss for a BBQ establishment. The sides were bland, but I will say the baked beans were sadly the best thing I had. And on top of it all...it was expensive. If you've ever had real, good BBQ...save your money and go somewhere else.

Great experience at the Due South BBQ Roanoke location! I was sad to see their Christiansburg location close, but so glad I got to stop by this one! Greeted right as I walked in the door, guided through a few menu questions and received my food promptly! I ordered the chicken wings with the smoked taters and enjoyed them with the Red Hot sauce (which has a kick) and the Sweet Red sauce. They have weekday lunch specials, kids meals, and note gluten free items on their menu! If you are gluten free, be sure to ask for your meal without the hush puppies as those unfortunately are not GF! Plenty of seating and about two miles off 81! Definitely worth a stop!

Excellent chicken, pork, and brisket. This is where our family likes to go for some good barbeque. Please try the smoked chicken - I am not a huge fan of chicken at barbecue joints but theirs is AMAZING! The pulled pork and brisket will NOT disappoint. Teresa is a great server and deserves a shout-out. This is a locally-owned place and they do a great job. Their sides and sauces are made here at the restaurant and are delicious. We love this place. Come on by and you will too.

Really yummy BBQ!! Friendly, fast service and delicious food. Everything was fresh, crispy, and flavorful. As you can see in the photo, the meat literally fell off the bone it was so tender. Perfect little road trip pit stop for dinner!

Sauce selection at every table. My faves were the hot red and the lexington sauce

I'll start off by saying I'm not a BBQ connoisseur. I rarely eat meat, but I had a craving and found this place on Yelp because it was less than 10 minutes from my hotel. On a Saturday night, I was the only diner, but it seems that they had a steady stream of online orders. I got the wings and half rack of ribs. The portions were hearty for the prices. I enjoyed trying all the sauces that were at each table. The green beans could use some seasoning, but all in all a solid meal. Not sure why there weren't more people there, but perhaps it's because of the location. Service was prompt and friendly.

It's a fair bit away from the Interstate, but I can tell you that it's worth the trek. When we got here for lunch, there was a line out the door and the smokers out back hard at work told us this was the place to be. We got served pretty quickly and found a table. The place is neat and clean with a decent amount of seating both inside and out. The missus had a brisket sandwich and I got the pulled pork with slaw, pinto beans and mac&cheese for the sides. The servings are HUGE and that smoke ring isn't just for looks. The meat was done perfectly with the smoky flavor and not dried out. I also tried one of their homemade sausages. Absolutely fantastic! Snappy casing with a filling that included creamy cheese hunks and a level of spicy that was just right. We pride ourselves in having high standards when it comes to BBQ, and this joint didn't disappoint! We've been to numerous BBQ joints including the famous award-winning Big Bob Gibsons in Northern Alabama and this place comes in well over that. We visited with the owner (Kelly) and had a great experience. The staff we interfaced with were both friendly and engaging. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. Highly recommended!

The daily special was a beef brisket cheesesteak. The sandwich was large, the meat copious, and the cheese was well integrated. I think there was mayo on it, because the sandwich was soggy and runny. I ate one half as a sandwich, one half with a fork. No banana peppers to add to the sandwich. The bread was slightly hard, contained the filling, but not the juices and cheese run-off. Very messy. Coleslaw was just a pile of sliced cabbage. Not much taste. Very disappointed for all the hype. Other than salt, there did not appear to be any seasonings. The meat was definitely brisket, but lost its identity in the cheese and bread. Staff was very nice and helpful when ordering, wait was not long even though there was a huge wave right behind us. Drinks are cans/bottles and you pay per. Would I go back? Not sure, I really didn't get a bbq experience from a bbq joint. I think I will try another joint or two before I go back.

I added mushrooms and grilled onions for a small extra fee, and had my BBQ chips that come on it, on the side. We shared the crinkle‑cut fries, which came with their incredible house sauce. The sauce was so good I asked if they sold it, they do not, but the waitress sent me home with some samples for free. Service was fast and friendly. The waitresses were dressed in black tank tops, black shorts, and black shoes, and every one of them worked with a smile, like they were glad you came. When I came to visit this place for the first time I had no idea that it had a close relationship to the River and Rail Restaurant which I reviewed last year, giving it the highest rank of my Five Star reviews ever. When doing my research for this review I found out that the long-time Roanoke residents, Whit and Lauren Ellerman, the owners of Crystal Spring Grocery, are also the owners of the River and Rail Restaurant, located on the same block as Crystal Spring Grocery. The Ellermans clearly have an eye for recognizing the possibilities of vacant buildings and the talents of others and a vision of how they can come up with something as wonderful as this establishment. Gourmet grocery store and Cafe is a short definition of what Crystal Spring Grocery Company is all about. But I must go more in depth of what makes it so special and unique beside being gourmet. First of all I was very impressed with the interior design of the building space. Simple yet beautiful in its simplicity. I particularly loved its shiny whitish gray floors, and the green furniture and design, throughout the Grocery as well as Cafe. Also, I was very impressed with the windows and lighting treatment of the place. Second, I was very impressed with the quality and organization of the food items and wines, in the Grocery area. Third, with the menu items and quality of the food coming out of the kitchen of the Cafe. I had an Iced Sweet Tea to drink, and a Chicken Sandwich with Fries to eat. Everything was amazingly delicious. And last, but not least, I was highly impressed with the quality of your employees; with the ones behind the counter up front and the ones taking the orders and handing them out in the Cafe area. They all were so friendly and welcoming and at the same time so knowledgeable and organized, providing exceptional customer service individual and working as Team players. It's been over a year now and I still remember that bowl of delicious fried Okra I had the first…read moretime I ate here. It was very significant to me because as I was growing up I learned to eat Okra from my grandmother's home cooking. And I can't think of no better way to describe this place as this. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Pok-E-Joe's has become one of the most loved BBQ restaurants in Vinton, Roanoke, and nearby cities and towns. And key to its success is their quality meats and slow smoking cooking process that lasts for hours, turning their meats into award-wining Southern culinary masterpieces. Today, when I arrived a friendly young lady greeted me at the Host's station and after giving me a warm welcome, and inquiring as to where I wanted to be seated, took me to a comfortable booth next to the window. There I enjoyed looking over the menu with all the unique and delicious Southern BBQ foods such as the Pulled Pork, the USDA Prime Brisket, the Smoked Sliced Turkey, and others. Not long afterwards, my very friendly server, Jessica, came by with a big smile to greet me and take my order. I ordered an Iced Lemonade to drink. And to eat I ordered the Build Your Tray. I first asked for the Brisket Tips, which I had heard so much of, but they didn't have any today. So I picked my meats for the tray 1/4 lb of Pulled Pork and 1/4 lb of USDA Prime Brisket. For my sides I ordered Fried Okra, a Side Salad with Blue Cheese dressing, and Straight Cut Fries. The tray also included 3 Hushpuppies. I also wanted to include in this review their Pok-E-Cuban Sandwich, so I also ordered this with the idea of taking home the leftovers to eat tomorrow. My server Jessica did an excellent job taking my order, seeing that it was delivered, and checking on me at the right times. Everything was to good to the point of being exquisite. The flavor of the meats were out of this world, and they were so tender and juicy. The Salad was made with fresh ingredients and tasted refreshing with the Blue Cheese dressing. The Fried Okra and Hushpuppies were magnificent. And the Fries were the perfect cut and fried to perfection. As to the Pok-E-Cuban Sandwich, it surpassed all the others that I have had, with the slow smoked Ham and Pulled Pork, pickles, Swiss Cheese, and their house-made Spicy Mustard. All this, and at a very reasonable price. The ambiance of the restaurant was clean, warm, and relaxed. And contributed to the amazing diving experience. For dessert I had a Chocolate Chip Cookie Bowl Sundae. It was the dessert of the day and tasted amazing. Even the quality of the Vanilla Ice-cream was tops and creamy. This restaurant is very detail oriented, with fine food, cooked the right way, and provided with excellent customer service. And this makes for an extraordinary dining experience.
