The first time I had Duke's was at a fall festival at Canalside a few years ago. I remember waiting in the cold for at least half an hour next to a row of porta potties. I remember biting into a crispy on the outside but also fluffy Apple cider donut which really hit the spot. I stopped by at Duke's Donuts today at the NT Farmer's Market. For $10, you get 13 donuts which is a steal! The Apple Cider donuts were as amazing as I remembered them to be! Hands down, one of the best Apple Cider donuts I've had. They had a nice apple flavor to it and weren't overly sweet like other ones I've had. I also had the original sugared donuts. This was my first time having one of them. I really like how fluffy they were but they tasted a little boring and didn't have much flavor to them. Overall, I'm a huge fan of Duke's Donuts. Well I guess this donut and coffee truck frequents different farmers markets. Today they were at the North Tonawanda farmers market. You could tell from the line that they must be decent but I didn't realize until we got up to the window that they were making the donuts fresh. Our were hot right out of the fryer. That served a cup of hot coffee was the perfect start to our farmers market shopping. Not specialty coffee standards but certainly decent. Well worth waiting in the long line. I have seen the Duke's Donuts truck many of times since moving to Buffalo and for some reason I have never actually got a donut until now and WOW, this place is incredible. Duke's was set up at the "World's Largest Yard Sale" which is actually not even close to being the World's Largest Yard Sale but that is an argument for a different time. Anyway, for only $1 you get a hot and fresh donut that practically melts in your mouth. I got (what I think is called) the raised sugar donut and it made me feel all types of tingles. My friend and I were going for a long walk yesterday and we happened upon a farmer's market when we were walking through Caz Park. I had never heard of Duke's Donuts before but I can't pass up anything fall-ish. I bought an apple cider slushee and two apple cider donuts. (I gave one to my friend. You had to spend $5 to pay with a card. The slushee was $4.00--I think--and the donuts were $1.00 each.) The slushee was fantastic. It wasn't as sweet as Mayer Brothers and I didn't get brain freeze while drinking it. (Mayer Brothers was a lot colder, when I got one last week and I drank most of it too quickly.) The apple cider donut was really awesome!! It was crispy on the outside, a bit greasy, and it was a little crumbly when I was down to the last half of it but I really enjoyed it. It was sugary on the outside but not overly sugary. They had one other donut for sale too but I didn't purchase that one. It was a plain fry cake. I'm sure it was good too. These are good donuts. And you can watch them being made, which I think is very cool. Better than being in one of the Krispy Crème (using the old Freddies recipes) locations where you can watch them coming through the machine. I think these donuts are the perfect size too, not some football sized thing you get from Paulas, not overly sugared like from Donut Craze, but really a nice old fashioned good solid donut. I haz a sad. I did not want to believe the reviewers that had bad experiences because I had eaten Duke's Donuts for years - at Williamsville Farmer's Market, at Broadway Market, at other places. They were my favorite. I was pretty disappointed in the one I had recently at North Tonawanda. They used to be crispy on the outside, fluffy and cakey on the inside. Sugar soaked into them when they came right out of the hot oil. That was the best! I will say that the batter is still just as deliciously spiced as always in the apple cider ones. Unfortunately, the one I had recently was flat, squashy, and greasy. And slightly raw in the middle. It was right out of the oil, too. It's hard to tell the difference in the photos, but the old ones were obviously well structured, round donuts, evenly colored/ fried, and evenly sugared. The recent one has clumps of sugar and is kind of flat and oval. I've never tried to make a donut, but I gather the oil quality, cleanliness, and temperature can have a major effect on the finished product. Maybe the donut machine needs to be cleaned or recalibrated? I'm sure that's tough when you're running constantly for hours. Thing is, the batter still tastes as good, so the recipe is probably still right up there. It just looks like they are having some problems frying the donuts properly. I am also amazed that the prices are still ridiculously low. They were a 5 star plus, but not anymore for a raw, greasy donut. You could get it back, though! Keep the delicious batter for the apple cider donuts, just fix the frying. read more

I have tried them over and over again... and I'm just always left a bit disappointed. At first bite, yes, yes yes, YUM... but then I'm left with this greasy, oily coating on my tongue unlike any other fresh-fried donuts I've ever had. And it doesn't matter if I eat them hot, eat them after they've cooled, eaten them from the downtown market or at a different venue... they're just always always greasy. I don't know if they're not being fried at a high enough heat so they absorb too much oil (b/c they're cranking them out so much for the demand? ). You haven't lived until you have had a freshly made apple cider donut from Duke's. I'm talking fresh as in made within the past hour fresh. First comes the crunch of the outside of then donut, then the melty center of the donut comes next. This donut truly melts in you mouth. You can absolutely eat one of these donuts the next day and love it but nothing beats one that is just made.
