Our server, Hailey, was very friendly and willing to tolerate our tourist questions about the surrounding area. I had the Cowboy Stew, a rich and hearty stew with corn, onions, peas, green beans, stewed tomatoes, and chunks of beef in a tomato/beef stock base. 100% legit, and a great way to feel like you're ready to hop on horseback in search of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch's hideout outside of town (not lying about that, maybe the horseback part). My wife and I split the nachos, which were topped with some fantastic brisket and bbq sauce. No nacho cheese sauce used here, just solid melted cheddar, with housemade salsa, sour cream, and jalapeños. Highly recommend. This place looks like it's been here since the 1950s, and has plenty of western local flavor for the tourist looking for a fun respite from the long drive between Moab and Capitol Reef. read more

We enjoyed this place, and Hanksville! What a great little place nobody has heard of. We had several meals here over the course of a few days including breakfast and dinner. Everything was great and what you would expect from a diner / grill. The burgers had great flavor, the biscuits, bacon and eggs delicious and not dry and over done, and they kept the coffee coming. The BBQ Chicken and ribs were quite tasty as well. Kori, Pedro, and Sheila all took care of us a different times during our stay. Great service! Only place that was open early in the morning in the area as our stop on our drive from Capitol Reef to Moab adventure. Everyone there was super friendly. I got the chicken steak breakfast and this itself I'd say is 10/10. It was still juicy inside, which when I order this at other places, the steak gets tough and dry. We stopped in Duke's for lunch on our way through town. I had Dukes nachos which were very good. Everyone likes their food. Service was a little slow but waitress explained they were short staffed so I don't think that is common. She was busting her butt trying to keep up. We ate here for lunch and it was one of the only places open in town. The restaurant is known for their bbq and so you would expect meat entrees to be good. My husband ordered the Duke Burger--nothing special; meat was not cooked to order and was a preformed food service patty that was bland and dry. I had the fajita chicken cobb salad. Well, not even half. The chicken was not grilled, had no seasoning, was cold and lifeless and tasted like it was a precooked, frozen piece of chicken that was thawed. It was surrounded by a pile of raw white onions, raw green peppers, bagged grated carrots and sadness! So disappointing! A waitress said the chicken was smoked out back, but I highly doubt it. I recommended they revamp this salad or take it off the menu. Other things on the menu may have tasted better, but I guess we hit 2 duds. I ended up eating a bar in the car. read more

It was not too busy when we got there and the atmosphere was laid back. It's a nice touch to have a map with pins from visitors from all over the world. We visited capital Reef and the area as I had not been out this way before. Going through Hanksville right about dinner time and this place appeared on places to eat in my area from seri. So we stopped in. We were greeted by a very welcoming voice as we entered. I do not recall his name but he made sure to greet every single person as they entered. We were quickly escorted to our table and introduced to our server. My wife and I decided to split a meal. We decided on the full rack of baby back ribs and I also added a bowl of cowboy beef stew. The stew (more like a soup was just ok) had a clear reddish broth loaded with veggies that seemed out of a can. It did have pieces beef and potato's. The Ribs were very tender with a sweet bbq sauce layered on the top half. For the sides We ordered the red skinned smashed potatoes with gravy and a salad. Tthe Ribs were good tasting, I liked them, very meaty and did fall off the bone. My wife did not care for the very sweet Sauce they were smeared in. The potato's with brown gravy were great and salad was fresh and as expected. All tables are started off with fresh corn bread muffins and honey butter, They were excellent. John Wayne would be honored to have this place named after him and I enjoyed the many different pictures of him and real life town people from recently to historical. read more

I'm a little late for this review. Visited the place a couple months ago on my roadtrip through Utah. After doing some off-roading in Hanksville we started looking for places to have dinner. This place popped up on yelp. Parking was easy to find. The host was friendly and showed us to our table. The ambiance is of a cozy western bar with lots of "the duke" (John Wayne) memorabilia. The service was fairly fast and the food was delicious. Specially liked the fried okra. Will be back here if we are in Hanksville again. read more

Hanksville is usually just a town we stop in to get gas on our way to Lake Powell, but we ended up coming to Duke's for dinner! Everything was delicious! In fact, we have decided we will definitely make this an annual stop and enjoy a great meal at Duke's! Everything was so fresh and was made from scratch. I'm staying one of Duke's cabins just behind the restaurant. I had just arrived and didn't feel like making another sandwich for dinner so I had decided to order online. I ordered the Penne pasta w Alfredo sauce, which comes w a small cup of corn and a small salad, and ordered the coconut cream pie ala mode. I was pleasantly surprised. Hanksville is such a small town that sometimes you never know what you'll get in a town this size. Everything was actually delicious. The pasta had Parmesan cheese on top and a couple of pieces of garlic bread as well. The salad was fresh and came w croutons and your choice of dressing (can came w a side cup). The pie and ice cream was delicious as well. The next time you drive through Hanksville check this place out. The restaurant itself is laid back and has a small town feel. I'm not sure about all these other favorable reviews but here is an honest one. Hanksville has very few options for food and Duke's was our unfortunate choice. I had the beef brisket which was probably the worst brisket I have ever had. What made it even worse was the price,$32. My wife had the penne pasta with marinara which reminded her of spaghetti o's. She said her food was terrible and ate very little of it. Given that Dukes is the only breakfast option in town we were thankful that we had some microwave oatmeal as our morning option before we left town in the morning. read more

We stopped at Duke's Slickrock Grill in Hanksville, UT, and ended up coming back for dinner two nights in a row because it was that good! The BBQ is absolutely outstanding, but what really sets this place apart is the service--super friendly, welcoming, and attentive to every detail. Between the two nights, we tried the chicken fried steak, fried green beans, beef brisket sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, cornbread, chicken gnocchi soup, and banana cream pie--everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Each dish felt homemade and comforting, and you can tell the kitchen takes real pride in what they serve. Like I said, we went back a second night because we couldn't get enough. Finding gems in the middle of nowhere Utah is always a blessing. This place was absolutely amazing. I ordered breakfast. A basic platter with ham, eggs, hashbrowns and toast. Simple, classic and wonderful! The service was top notch. We had a nice older lady as our server and she was as sweet as can be. Prices were reasonable especially considering there's nothing much else in town to eat. What I also found cute was that they served the soda in campfire mugs, how neat!?!? Parking is fine, the place is attached to an RV park so you've got lots of people coming and going so make note of that. We were staying out and swingarm city area and we came in to Hanksville, Utah to see if we could find a couple of items fill up my tank in my little off-road explore/daily driver. We were gonna go to there's a burger place at the gas station and it smelled really good but when we walked through the store looking for what we were looking for and then walked back out. It was packed already and I've eaten there before I'm not a great fan. It's good food. It's decent and the price is a little bit more than I would wanna pay for the quality, but this is not a review on them. This is a review on Duke slip rock Grill and I am so glad that we ended up stopping there and eating before we went back to camp. The food was fabulous. Service was absolutely excellent. The ambience was just great. It's just a grill Café bar kind of plays with a lot of old photos of the area. It was cool. It was way cool way better than sitting in some burger joint watching a dozen or two or three dozen people come in to grab a burger and grab some gas and head on down the road. My wife had the war wagon, slow smoked, pulled pork pot on a pretzel bun and topped with signature barbecue sauce served with coleslaw and steakhouse fries. She said that the sandwich was fabulous. They brought her out some extra barbecue sauce so she could put on there. I ate the coleslaw because I love coleslaw. It was absolutely magnificent. I ate the Donovan's reef, which was some cod fillets with steakhouse fries. next time we go there and there will be a next time I'll guarantee that I might try something different but if I have the fish again, I'm gonna ask for some coleslaw or maybe even house side salad instead of the fries but they have great burgers from what I hear. They looked fabulous coming on plates to the tables around us. We originally went in there to have breakfast. That is something I would like to try, so I'll just have to remember the next time we go out there which will be probably in September for a family trip now I'll be spending some time out there doing some private trips or just explorations. I'm gonna try to get in there five stars people I haven't read any other reviews. I really don't care what other people have to say everybody's gonna find either greatness or fault and faults normally come with either perception being not what you expected or a flaw of something that happened with a waitress or with the food there's nothing that's perfect in this world except for Jesus. Highly recommended if you're in that area and you have some time I understand that people want to come through that small little town and get some gas and then move on either over to Monticello Moab area maybe up to goblin Valley or Green River you know other things to see out there but if you got time to take a lunch by all means do it we were there probably about 45 minutes.
