Canned beer was refreshing after a long Capitol Gorge Trail hike. Got two tomato bisque soups which were also great and the kids enjoyed their kids burger and fries. I would give this restaurant 0 star if I can! Definitely the worst dining experience I had in the entire U.S.! They didn't use good food material to prepare the food, the iron steak tasted no flavor no juice at all, super dry even we requested medium rare! The beef rib also no flavor at all! The trout taste like steam the frozen fish and then grill it, also smell a little bit fishy! The service is super slow, it takes them literally 45 minutes to put our food on the table after we ordered the food! I understand it's holiday season, and they probably short of staff, but if you have no service at all, why you automatically add 18% tip to the bill?! I have mixed feelings, on one side, there's not much choice around here, and this place delivers ok food, but on the other side I can't lie and I've got to be honest and score it how I felt in the moment, thus only 3*. The ribeye steak was very good, but it came out very rare, almost raw, while we asked for medium rare. The accompanying mushrooms were very good. The Philly cheesesteak was really not good, you might argue (rightly so) that we shouldn't have ordered it, but hey, it was in the menu. Our party of 5 ordered the steak sandwich, beef burger, fried catfish, tomato soup, manicotti, trout dip, buffalo wings, flan, and peach cobbler to go. Would not recommend this restaurant. The catfish, manicotti, and tomato soup were super salty. The peach cobbler had a cup of brown sugar thrown on top. The vegetables with the dip were old and had turned white and soft. With the dip they had thrown in some ordinary potato chips. The sandwich and the burger were okay. This restaurant didn't seem to be accustomed to take out orders as well. The tomato soup was in coffee cups and half the order was in a plastic laundry bag from the hotel. Well, what did we expect. Arrived late and only place open. read more

While I would not normally choose Pioneer Kitchen, or likely any hotel-based restaurant, it sure was convenient when arriving at Capitol Reef Resort around 7pm after a day spent hiking 15 miles, spending hours driving, and worrying I wouldn't be able to find lodging anywhere. We checked into the resort, changed into sweats, and walked right over to PK, so that was pretty amazing. Dinner is from 5-8pm in the off-season (normally extended to 9pm), and consists of 14 entrees, mostly meat-based with a few vegetable options. There are some apps, dessert, a children's menu, or soup and salad bar. They even have a bit of beer and wine! I opted for the salad bar, which always includes chili, along with a soup of the day. You can dish up as soon as you order, which was ideal as I was starving! Chili sounded so cozy and satisfying after spending the day getting wind burnt in the cold, but unfortunately, it was barely lukewarm. Happily, the creamy tomato soup was hot. There are (stale) crostini and rolls to pair, then the salad bar is pretty limited, though I was happy to find a spring green and baby kale mix. There was also fresh cut fruit that I enjoyed very much. My husband had the Philly Cheesesteak, and it looked fine, if unexceptional, but his crispy hot fries were great, and I admit to stealing a great deal of them (you get your option of sides with dinner entrees, and can also have a baked potato, spanish rice, or seasonal vegetable). He was thrilled to learn they offer a breakfast buffet from 7-10, so while I would not have returned of my own accord, we were there following a quick hike the next morning. It is nothing remarkable, basically a slightly better continental breakfast you would get for free elsewhere, only here it is $10. The best part was probably the fresh fruit (the same as the night prior: pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, and a meagre sprinkling of blueberries). Pancakes were awful and crumbly. Potatoes were okay, but overly greasy. Bacon and sausage were pretty well prepared. They only have one hot sauce in the whole restaurant, but one of the waitresses nabbed it for us - haha! Speaking of which, the wait staff, especially those during dinner, are stupendous here. They only had two employees working for each meal, and they are hustlin'! Running around, seating people, refilling waters, removing dirty dishes, etc, and all with a smile. Overall, it is overpriced mediocre food. But it's a convenient option for those staying in the park, and service is excellent. read more

I can't believe this restaurant doesn't have five stars! I had the BEST breakfast I have had in a long time - outdoing even the very best New Jersey diners (and if you know, you know NJ is known for their diner breakfasts!) I'm not even sure why my two eggs-over-easy on a big piece of toast were so good but they were delicious. And it was so big I had enough to save half until later after my first hike of the day. The meal came with a slice of cantaloupe and three orange slices, all ripe and sweet. It also came with a hefty serving of roasted potatoes. My husband got a spinach and mushroom omelette absolutely stuffed with fresh mushrooms and spinach, with the same fruit and potatoes. It was so good, we came back for a light dinner which was just as good! The BLT was probably the best I've ever had. It came with a cup of Tomato and Roasted Garlic (?) soup which was also quite yummy. We split a salad dressed with a delicious Blackberry Vinaigrette. The hostess, Cherie, and waiter, Shaun, couldn't have been nicer. The place was hopping but they made sure to take the time to check in with us several times as we waited for our food. Then we ate breakfast here the next morning. There were flies everywhere. The hosts/hostesses on both visits were rude and surly. We barely saw our servers. For dinner my husband paid way too much for an overcooked lump of beef and a side of over-steamed and unseasoned broccoli (their version of "seasonal veggies"). I had the spare ribs, which were tender but lacking in much flavor, and a cold baked potato. Breakfast the next morning was more of the same. Big portions of cold, barely seasoned potatoes, two pieces of toast, some dodgy-looking melon and orange slices, and a small scoop of bland scrambled eggs. The bacon was great, though. We weren't sure if we wanted to eat but decided we would have glass of wine and go from there. The waiter, Shaun, told us that if we weren't eating, "the tables were for diner guests" and "not for just having drinks!" So, we left and went across the street and had wine, beer, pizza and spaghetti. Moral of the story, Shaun should be removed from this position because he has no clue about customer service. If he had welcomed our group, we would had several bottles of wine, dinner and desserts. The tab would have easily been over $150.00 and his tip probably at least $30.00. But instead he lost all. BE CAREFUL!!!! We decided to eat here before going on about our day as we had reserved a room for the night before at the Capitol Reef Resort. There was a lady who told us to sit anywhere we'd like. Then, there was another lady who came over and took our order, brought our food and assisted us with our requests (ketchup, salsa, etc.). We had our food. It wasn't the best, but it was ok. There aren't many options in the area, but the food was decent. What I didn't like was that as we were finishing our food, the lady who told us to sit anywhere came back and gave us our check. I thought that was weird as the other lady was serving us. I gave her my card and the receipt so she could close the bill and we could leave. I went ahead and left cash on the table to tip the lady that was actually helping us, (she was also removing dishes from the tables). Tell me why, I looked at my receipt later that day and noticed that the lady who took the card and bill felt the liberty to add herself a tip. I did not write down a tip amount, nor did I authorize her to add a specific amount. If this lady is doing this to people all morning, how many people must she be ripping off? I always tip, but for her to take the freedom to add it herself is a no no. I definitely won't be coming back here! read more

Dinner was good as I ordered the chicken pot pie. From what I can tell by the other reviews, this may be the best thing on the menu. So they do get four stars since that was my experience. I assumed the fruit given with the pancakes would have been something to eat with them, but it was a just a side of oranges/cantaloupe. They are in the middle of nowhere but do a darned nice job with eats. Omnivores will have many options and there are vegetarian choices too. Wine and beer I think. Park in resort lot. God this place was awful. My BF ordered oatmeal for breakfast. They brought him a bowl of warm water and a small packet of Quaker Instant Oatmeal. The water came from the pot they use to fill tea pots and the bowl was room temperature when they poured it in, so the water was lukewarm. How could they not even know they have to microwave instant oatmeal or at least use boiling water? We had to ask them if they had a microwave they could at least heat the water for us. read more

We both got the Orange Peel Grilled Trout which was prepared perfectly. I splurged and got the peach cobbler ala mode for dessert. A perfect meal after a day of hiking. We had planned to get Mexican the next evening but wasn't feeling it so returned to Pioneer. This time, we both ended up choosing the Stewed Braised Beef Short Ribs. We loved this spot! We stayed in the attached hotel, and it was the only place open in town, and we were so lucky to find that it's a great place! We got nachos with chicken, and it came with decent salsa and really good queso in addition to the cheese melted on top. The kids got burgers with fries; the burgers were actually kid sized which was a relief. I hate it when the "kid" portion is giant and the kids don't eat it. This was perfect. I got the short rib with vegetables. The rib was tender and had a few peas and carrots with it, and my side of vegetables was broccoli. It felt good to eat something green! My husband got the enchiladas with fries, and we enjoyed dipping the fries in the green enchilada sauce and leftover queso from the nachos.
